CBSSports.com and SB Nation: Your Chance to Destroy Me at Fantasy Baseball
If I had to make a list of things I was terrible at that bode ill for my career as a baseball blogger, these two things would be on it: self-promotion and fantasy baseball. Today, then, is a special occasion: I'm about to do both.
You may have already noticed the network messages about it, but SBN and CBSSports.com have partnered up to offer premium fantasy baseball leagues at a discount for the 2010 season. You'll see them all over the usual ad spots—apparently the KY people were not willing to offer discounted fantasy baseball leagues—and in sponsored posts like this one across the SBN baseball network.
That means two things to you, The Viewer:
- By clicking this link, and others like it, you'll be able to set up CBSSports.com Commissioner Leagues at a 50% discount, which comes to $90 after a 14-day free trial. These are the fully featured models, including keeper-league capability, live scoring, full control over rules and scoring, live chat, and analysis. (Full disclosure: I get a kickback every time you click that link, and others like it, and set up a commissioner league.)
- I'll be commissioner of a Viva El Birdos fantasy league on CBSSports.com, which I'll write about periodically over the course of the season. It's a Head-to-Head league, statistical categories as-yet-undetermined, because that is the only kind I know how to play.
If you'd like to be involved in the league, leave a comment. (I'm also taking suggestions for the league name.) I've cut back on my fantasy play, so this is your one chance to see just how bad I am at fantasy baseball, and just how terribly I overrate prospects in the middle rounds.
Here's the 50% off link one more time, and here is my first-ever small print: CBSSports.com is an SB Nation partner and paying sponsor of the SB Nation baseball communities. This post is one of a series of sponsor-endorsed posts related to the CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League.

I would like to be involved in the league
but hey
“Winner doesn’t get luggage’d” sound good for a prize?
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
To clarify, I am a cheap stingy bastard
So I really don’t want to pay anything. Sorry to be lame, but I am cheap :P

It's not selling out
it’s buying in (3:09 if you want the joke… watch the whole thing if you have time… it’s good stuff)

so $90 with no prize money?
I love fantasy and I’m certainly down for a VEB league but something more than pride has to be on the line here.

that's if you want to set up your own league
the VEB Corporate-Sponsored Sell-out League™ is comped.
ok gotcha....i guess i'd be down for a veb league
even if its only for pride.
and i bet you never thought your blogging would turn you into a corporate lackey, did ya dan?

So all we have to do is click on the link to give you money?
We don’t even have to make a league?
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

Lucky for me I don't need to worry about money
my Nigerian friend who is a prince has promised me a lot of money when he gets to the U.S., the only problem though is his country doesn’t accept diamonds as currency so I have to send him ten thousand dollars. If you guys want in I’ll be sure to give you his name.
I'd love to play
The league I’ve been in for the last 4 years is disbanding, and CBS is my fav fantasy baseball site.
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.
I'm excited to check out the cbs league as well as the espn one this year
I’ve only done yahoo leagues mostly, tried the sporting news one and wasn’t too impressed

I dunno
isn’t 5×5 just the old school way? I’d use the default one probably

seriously,,,,,ya just do either or on the overlapping stuff,
but what the hell, that’s a better option than 5×5, IMO. The more categories (read numbers) the better the sample size for evaluation of the best team, no?

why would you just use counting stats?
just wondering…

why not?

let's say I used the Saves+Holds
Why would I want to use saves and hold separately then, same goes for at walks and intentional walks, they’re being counted twice. I guess the same could be said for OBA, if I use Batters faced and hits and walks. I just want to avoid counting the same things twice, maybe this is a better way to do it.

I'd add either total bases or OPS personally
not sure why there’s no OBP?

Are there more SABR inclined options?
WHIP, no OBP? If not the way you have it seems fine.

I'd definitely at least have OPS
what about all the Other category stats?

CBS Sportsline
If you currently have a keeper league going how do you get this discount and keep the previous history of the league?
I'm in there like swimwear.
Assuming spots are still available.
Remember, finishing last in VEB fantasy baseball is still better than being a Cubs fan.

I'd be happy to give it a go...
if there’s still space.
deep keeper!!!!!!
I would love to see where Harper would go
Belief that success is inevitable is as likely to hold you back as a belief that it is impossible.
oddly, an article i read today
quoted a mlb scout as saying he didn’t think harper could catch in the bigs, and after praising his power at the plate, he said harper should be moved to the mound
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
and you are a sellout
can I join?

how do we sign up for it?

I'm afraid that getting into SABR ruined me for fantasy bb
Until they have leagues with wOBA, UZR, and FIP.
Play ball!
you're a little late Beyond the box score did something similar to that last month.
Interesting
Maybe next year…

i'm afraid, dan, that whatever happened in the
“KY fantasy league” might be a little strong for SBN.
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Buck O'Neil, from "The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America."

I would love to be in a VEB fantasy league!

Any openings remaining?
If there are any spots left I would be interested in playing as well.
If there's space left, I'd join.
I’ve only done Fantasy Baseball sort of half-assedly over the last few years, and I need an excuse to get back to knowing every team, up and down, inside and out.
Let me get this straight
It is $90 a person and that is half off? So some people pay $180 to play Fantasy Baseball? That seems rather expensive to me for what it is
it's free for you to play
but if you want to start your own league, it’s $90. at least, that’s my impression

honestly I've never played in a non-yahoo league before
the selling point (I have them on a list) is that $90 divided 12 ways isn’t so bad.
