Looking more and more like we need Smoltz
When are we going to sign him? Team seems very solid other than bulpen depth.
I’m beginning to think we should just start Garcia. Not sure he adds value in Memphis — probably not a lot left for him to learn. Only reason to send him back is to monitor innings, but I think the big team can do that as well. They can always spot start MacClellen if they want to take the load off of Garcia.
Just win
I thought Smoltz is doing broadcasting or something like that

or just take the day off when he's scheduled to pitch
which would require he be a starter. i’m kidding, but it would be badass.

I think the number of appearances he committed to

Just spitballin'
Garcia as closer once it becomes clear that Franklin does, indeed, suck. I see no way in hell that he’ll return as 2009 Franklin, which is going to leave us in the lurch. Hey, worked for Wainwright, and the workload would certainly be smaller.
I don’t know about the wear and tear of having to warm up and pitch every night, though. . .
I think I like
Boggs at closer instead. I think it’s readily apparent that the big league club has no inclination to put him into the starting rotation and I think he has the pitches (at least) to be a great closer. Get that bulldog mentality going now while he’s young.
Garcia is too good to move to the closer role right now. He is too young and has too much to offer. I know there’s always the “Wainwright argument” here for closer, but the 5th starter spot is too valuable to this team right now. Like has been said before, I believe having McClellan in the pen will be big for stretching out Garcia’s starts.
My new take on this would be that Garcia should be the #3 starter instead of the #5 starter. I think that if you throw him after Wainwright and Carpenter (or Carpenter and Wainwright) that McClellan would be able to piggyback on Garcia’s starts much more often because he will be well rested as he won’t be needed on the days where Waino and Carp are starting nearly as often.
Boggs is a mental mess at closer
A Waino doesn’t always strike twice in a lifetime.

well, this is just the eyeball test
I haven’t seen him make the turn from being unsettled in a jam to bulling through it. I haven’t seen him perform well, and consistently well, in a pressure situation.
I could be wrong ‘cause I’m crap at seeing this, but his last outing, he was changing his arm slot in the middle of the appearance. Mentally I don’t see him stepping into the pressure cooker of closing and succeeding on a regular basis. IMO it would be as hit-and-miss as Motte’s results. I’m skeptical that “getting that bulldog mentality going now when he’s young” is going to work, when he was in the hot seat last year and it wasn’t there.

He is struggling to repeat his delivery.
Once he figures that out – and brings that walk rate down a bit – I see no reason why he couldn’t be closer.

You're right
and I’d rather see him starting in any capacity, myself. I just can’t handle too many more Franklin episodes.
You guys have to remebmer that Franklin has been really, really good as a reliever with the Cardinals
Sub 3 ERA in over 200 innings. Yes, he will regress, but he has earned the chance to be the closer for the start of the season. Boggs had one okay stretch of games and it looks like his stuff improved greatly in the pen. But he just hasn’t established anything yet.

I'm not calling for Boggs now...
just that if Franklin falters, I think he’s a better choice for the closer role because Garcia’s the better choice for a starter.

with Perez taking over the closer position for the Indians...
Do you guys think the Cardinals made a bad move trading him over Motte?
Keep in mind at the time DeRosa wasn’t hurt and wasn’t an injury risk. The Cardinals were going to trade from the right-handed relief. Motte was the other guy the Indians wanted. So the question really is just do you think we should have moved Motte instead of Perez?
Yes, I do
I certainly don’t think the question is fully resolved – there’s still some time for things to play out, but even before we made the trade I posed the question and basically declared my preference for Perez. Maybe Motte does develop a reliable second pitch (don’t hold your breath), and maybe Perez’s control issues plague him for the rest of his career. But right now I’d much rather have Perez.
i was hoping perez was moved, not motte
right now that’s not working out.

Perez was always more developed than Motte, right?
Even if I wasn’t of this opinion at the time (I honestly don’t remember my stance) if it was really either Motte or Perez I don’t see how keeping Perez isn’t the better option.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Perez just had more walks
other than that, he was the better pitcher

these have been garbage ejections though.
Milton dropped his bat after a third strike, he didn’t get in the ump’s face.the umpires are just going to toss him whenever they feel like it, I guess.
Not going to defend his past, but if umps want to give him a good claim to victimhood, they’re doing it right.

Dropping a bat isn't worthy of getting tossed from a game.
Doing what Yadier Molina did in Milwaukee – screaming, ranting, and taking all of his catcher’s gear off – is worthy of getting tossed from a game. Milton Bradley has surely earned most of his ejections, but these two are pretty iffy.

the question wasn't who has dropped a bat without being ejected...
the question is who routinely makes bigger scenes than MB without getting ejected at the same frequency. Sorry, but Skip Schumacher is not in MB’s league when it comes to making scenes with umpires.

So Bradley has toned it down to the level of
several other MLB players, yet because of his history he’s tossed out of games.
STAB STAB STAB
First...
I haven’t seen anything to suggest that MB has “toned it down” in absolute terms or in comparison to any other particular MLB player, so I reject your assumption. Some ejections are obvious; others are ticky-tack. So what if MB had a ticky-tack one (like many other players have had and will have in the future).
Second, if you’re suggesting that MB gets extra scrutiny or a shorter leash from umpires because of his past behavior, fine, I’m sure he does. And he deserves it. It doesn’t bother me that umpires take into account MB’s well-earned reputation when dealing with him on the field, just as they do with other players given their reputations.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Mar 22, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions
His reactions in these cases
were toned down. That’s the whole point. And I think that umps carrying over personal biases about players is just as unprofessional as MB’s behavior in the past. And Wakamatsu has had Bradley’s back so far.
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu wasn’t happy about the Wednesday ejection and was even more pointed in his comments after Friday’s game.
“To me, it’s almost like a witch hunt,” Wakamatsu said. “It’s almost embarrassing to me that egos get in the way and [Bradley] doesn’t even get a chance.”
Wakamatsu admitted that Bradley said something to the umpire while walking back from home plate and was “just about in” the Mariners dugout, but said it was so quiet that Wakamatsu couldn’t even hear what he said.
“It’s pretty blatant that some guys have it out for him,” Wakamatsu said.
We’re obviously not finding any common ground here, but I respect your opinion. I just disagree.
STAB STAB STAB
whether it's toned down seems to be based on what MB said...
sounds to me like the ump heard it, even if Don didn’t (or at least said he didn’t).
And MB has had plenty of chances – he’s just used them up. Next time perhaps he should STFU and walk back to the dugout.
I don’t want to see a “witch hunt” (it’s never Milton’s fault is it?); but then again, MB doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point.

But I can see Tony putting him in second since he has that Pop and Onbase skills that he likes infront of Pujols. Batting him later in the order allows us to move freese down

Rasmus
I get the feeling he’s going to hit 5th for most of the year as long as he doesn’t struggle there. I think Ludwick is going to hit second to start the season. Tony likes power in the 2nd spot and Ludwick has it. I also think he will be better off hitting in front of Pujols than hitting behind Holliday.
I think Colby’s speed plays better in the 5 spot. He can steal bases in front of singles hitters like Yadi and Boog to put himself in scoring position, he can go first to third better than just about everyone in the lineup. His power plays well behind Holliday, and his (hopefully) improved patience will be better served with Pujols and Holliday on base than they will hitting in front of Albert. If he hits 5th all season, I could see him hitting 20+ homers and driving in over 100 runs, but I could also see Ludwick doing the same. The difference is that Colby would probably steal 20-25 bases there as well as scoring 90-100 runs. I don’t think Ludwick is capable of that in the 5 spot.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
A fully functioning Luddy, Pujols, Holliday, Rasmus lineup
makes me happy in the pants.

Especially
when you consider that Floppy should take most of Skip’s AB’s against lefties, which is a good thing, and should provide a solid 3B option if Freese falters.
If everyone is healthy, we shouldn’t have many holes in our lineup at all, save for the Yadi off day when ’Stache is in the lineup. Our bench bats compared to last year are also much improved.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
I agree with Rasmus hitting 5th alot
Only because if you have
Pujols
Holliday
Ludwick
you have righty righty righty. Not sure if Tony will bat ludwick second though.
I think he will
Ludwick was very impressive two years ago hitting in that hole in the lineup. Last year we really didn’t have that option.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
6th or 7th
Maybe even 9th with the pitcher hitting 8th. Look at it this way, currently, Ryan has the lowest projected OBP of any player the Cards are going to potentially start on a regular basis. This team, with Mac and his patient approach installed as hitting coach, should get on base a whole lot more than they did last season.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?

memphis is going to be nuts for pitchers.
If garcia is with the big club, starters at memphis will be something like:
Hill
Ottavino
Lynn
Walters
Maclane
With zink, kinney, samuel, probably salas, sanchez, parise, perez, norrick, meyer, scherer, etc. All fighting for time and slots. Trey hearne probably goes back to springfield. No idea where parisi fits in if the cubs send him back – probably long relief.
The position players are much less confusing, with a little intrigue in the outfield and at catcher.

I think so.
The rules (per b-r) are that you have rookie status if you have, in each season where you’ve been in the Show:
* Fewer than 130 at bats or
* Fewer than 50 innings pitched, and
* Fewer than 45 days on the active roster, excluding time on the disabled list, in military service, or time when the rosters are expanded (currently after September 1)
I’m not exactly sure when he came off the active roster
by StanTheManFan on Mar 21, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Fail
I screwed up and pushed the wrong button, sorry. To continue: I’m not exactly sure when he got called up, but I think he could only have been on for the full month of August (31 days) plus 11 days in July, before the September expansion (by which time he was already having TJ). So yeah, he should qualify, as he was nowhere near the 50 innings.

Is it Walters’ turn in the rotation? I would have thought by this stage, Tony would start locking in the regular starters, to get them ready for April…

Manager Tony La Russa said the team is looking at modifying the rotation around the off day to avoid pitchers facing the same team every five days from here to the end of spring. The schedule sets up that some pitchers would face Washington, Florida or the Mets on consecutive turns.

I agree though, sometimes it’s good to point out when people are just being really opinionated…. but on the other hand, it seems like you like to debate people a lot, which is fine. sounds to me like k-mac is going to be the 5th starter no matter what
that garcia is going to AAA no matter what, and that salas and ottavino are duking it out for the last spot in the pen
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I'm pretty disappointed they're taking Garcia's start away.
If anyone has earned a start this ST, it’s been Garcia. My guess is that if KMac starts the season as the 5th starter, Garcia takes it from him by mid May. He’ll go down and dominate AAA while KMac BB’s batter after batter in the bigs.
i'm disappointed that ottavino is going to the pen
unless that’s just a temporary situation.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
It would almost seem to make more sense
to keep KMac in the ‘pen, stretch out Ottavino and see if he can be the #5 starter, and send Garcia back to Memphis until needed. I still prefer Garcia as the #5, but why try to make a starter a reliever, and a reliever a starter? Unless it’s to give DD his projects for the season.

Be that guy in the future. He’s got good speed. He’s just wild still. As a future proposition, he’s not crazy as a futue closer.

Ottavino walks way to many guys
I don’t want him in the pen. Salas is a way better choice
by FlimtotheFlam on Mar 21, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I just can't see a scenario in which he makes the team for the bullpen
If you need a guy with good stuff and poor command, take Boggs. Ottavino still has an outside chance of becoming a starting pitcher and with the plethora of relief options (Parise, Salas, etc) it just doesn’t make much sense to plug him into the pen.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
i agree
i’m still holding out hope for him in the rotation down the line
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I just don't think it's going to happen
I keep hoping for this too, but he struggles to be consistent in his delivery from inning to inning and sometimes even in the middle of innings, which is why I think he’s a better fit for the bullpen — he’d throw a limited number of pitches each time out and would have less to think about in terms of delivery. He could go out there and let it go.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
this is all probably true

To me, much of the "intangibles" argument displays a fundamental inability to understand the difference between cause and effect, leading to people make all kinds of bizarre criticisms of what statistics say and don’t say. Of course intangibles exist. Of course there are unpredictable outside factors exerting themselves on the game. People who understand statistics understand this. But what’s great about baseball is that because a large portion of the game can be easily quantified, and because success or failure relies largely on a player’s intrinsic abilities, the effects (stats) are remarkably predictable and consistent from year to year.

You are evil.
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Monday lineups
At home vs. Boston:
1. Schumaker 2B
2. Ryan SS
3. Pujols 1B
4. Holliday LF
5. Rasmus CF
6. Gotay 3B
7. Jay RF
8. LaRue C
9. Penny P
In Kissimmee vs Houston:
1. Lopez 2B
2. Greene SS
3. Craig 1B
4. Ludwick RF
5. Molina C
6. Stavinoha LF
7. Freese 3B
8. Mather CF
9. Lohse P
One caveat: some of the positions for the Houston game were deduced by logic. He didn’t give us positions for everyone, but it’s hard to envision it any other way.

i actually voted for the first option
only because there wasn’t one that said the content hasn’t been as awesome as usual lately
i think it has taken a bit of a hit, but its still the best place to go for cardinals information and analysis
still, white088, there are better ways to express your concerns than this condescending fanpost

my thing is actually more related to comments
and really its not anyones fault…life circumstances have forced me to not spend as much time on VEB, which means i really don’t know what half of the comments are referring to…memes and themes are sometimes very isolating, and its no one’s fault…but it does make it harder to stay as involved with the blog as i used to be
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
well, as I said above
the updated glossary is forthcoming. some of these memes won’t bear out come regular season. the other thing is, if it’s really, really bugging you, feel free to ask. I for one am happy to explain where something came from, even if it’s a you-had-to-be-there moment. I don’t want anyone left out.
the other, other part of it is a generation gap, well, several generation gaps – which usually have nothing to do with baseball, so in my estimation it’s not even germane.
IMO, anyone who feels like the off-topic content is getting out of hand needs to push for a regular off-topic post. and the use of it, once it’s posted. there is no way a community of this size will not go off-topic.
and there’s no way a community that provides content and discussion and moderation like VEB will not grow to be this size.

its not that it bugs me
its just that when i have 10 minutes to come here and i want to read comments on baseball related stuff, sometimes its hard to find just baseball related comments because of all the other stuff
like i said, its not a major problem, and i don’t want anyone to change…just i can see why it bother some people, especially relateively long time guys like me
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
But are comments really content?
The guy was complaining about the content of the site. He was also complaining about the comments, but those are two separate things.
STAB STAB STAB
i think its content
i come here for everyon’s thoughts on baseball, not just the main authors
and i do think the main page posts have taken a bit of hit…but then that has more to do with the fact that right now, we are a good team and the season hasn’t started…its a lot easier to write a lot of posts when a team has a lot of problems then when there aren’t a ton
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
I feel confident in saying that it will get more baseball related in-season
There’s just nothing to talk about with baseball right now. Spring stats are meaningless, can’t even watch many games and Ruben Gotay is getting PT.
Not afraid to nitpick
toward the end of last season
the game threads would often go off on wild tangents
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
but the main analysis posts were really good
and the comments to those posts usually were baseball directed, so you are probably right
sorry, meant to make just one comment

Though I can’t speak for other posters is if people would make topic suggestions for posts, so if you want to read about some particular subject, that can give me an idea.
I know I and probably other posters probably have blank web page moments – “journalism school dropout’s block” if you will – and an idea might spark me to think productively. Also, then readers can feel like they have some control over content.

Well after reading up on him, he was showing better control this ST
but his FB wasn’t making it past 90. Looks like he’s now trying to trade his FB for better control. With his past control issues, I don’t know if he’d ever make for a good pitcher in the pen. as a starter, he’d be an interesting project for Dunc though.
He had decent results in ST,

Seems like Mauer's value could take a huge hit if his health
forces him to 1B or DH. That would knock something like 2 wins off his value. So much of his awesomeness is tied up in his position, that there seems to be some additional risk there, imo.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
Even still
He’s a monster of a hitter and would be able to play more games at 1B.
Not afraid to nitpick
can an mlb contract contain language
that voids it in the event of a career-ending injury – say a 10-yr deal in which only the first five are guaranteed money?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Vesting options for playing time?
That kind of contract would be insured anyway against a career ender but that money isn’t very easy to get. The Astros had a big fight to get Bagwell’s insurance money I believe.
Not afraid to nitpick
the twins are getting some insurance money on nathan
but not until the end of the season. i was thinking a 10 yr 300mil contract would entail some huge premiums that would be cut substantially by this language.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I thought that had more to do
with the language of the insurance plan being too vague in it’s determination of “career ending injury”. The Astros were stuck with trying to define how Bagwell’s shoulder injury was truly career threatening when he was 38 years old and had played with it in some form for nearly 5 full seasons.
I would guess that the Twins will be more careful about how they word it, because, well, they have better ownership and a better front office than the Astros do.

I still think it’s 8Y$200M or bust for Albert. Although I do think it makes it more likely he takes that offer.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
that would be a good contract
better than this highest paid player in baseball crap
10/300 and such
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
I don't think he'll get 10/300 or anything even close to that.
The A-Rod deal was in a different market and for a team that could remain competitive while holding a contract of that size for one player. I think Albert realizes that the market has changed and that if he wants to win, he really isn’t going to get that kind of money from anyone and have a competitive team around him. I think the Cardinals can afford him at 8Y$200M and that’s probably about as much as he’ll get anywhere else. The Yanks probably won’t make a play for him with A-Rod, Tex, CC, and Burnett on the payroll, and I don’t think Boston will pay him that when they could pay Adrian Gonzalez quite a bit less.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
no way, he's not giving them a home town discount
not after he already gave them one. he’s even said as much
Hope is the worst of all evils, for it prolongs the torment of man
What's a discount?
Define a “home team discount” for me? What if the market only offers him $180M? Would the Cardinals giving him $170M in that instance be a “home team discount”? I don’t think so. He doesn’t have to uproot his family, he doesn’t have to buy another home or apartment or whatever and shuttle himself back and forth to see his kids. Essentially he’s staying because what’s another $10M on top of $170M if you have to pack up your family and you don’t want to?
Mauer might have been able to make more on the market, he might not have. But this deal kinda sets the market for in-season negotiations with other 2010-2011 free agents, so it does give us some idea of where the market is at for those type of players.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
home town discount is taking less money to play for the Cards than say the Yanks
would offer him if he would make it to free agency like Lego did. hopefully we’ll never know what the Yankees or any other team will offer him & he signs an extension.
Hope is the worst of all evils, for it prolongs the torment of man
See, I disagree with this
because you can’t measure it that way without using assumptions as to what the market would pay him. If he signs with the Cardinals, there’s no way that we’re ever going to know what the offers are and we’ll just have to speculate as to what the market might have held for a player of Pujols’ caliber.
Obviously, if he signs for $20M per season, that would be a discount, but I don’t think a deal like what Mauer just signed is a discount and I certainly don’t think that 8Y$200M is a discount either. Just because the Yankees might offer more doesn’t make it a discount. It makes it a tougher decision.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
yeah, that makes sense
we all should consider anything under $30 per a discount if that’s what he signs for
Hope is the worst of all evils, for it prolongs the torment of man
I can't really see the Yankees being in on Albert, tbh
They’ve got Tex at 1B. They’ve got A-Rod under control until he’s about 70 years old, and he will ultimately (presumably) have to move to 1B or DH, AND they’ve got a shortstop with defensive limitations, a “franchise face” and (presumably) a long-term place at the club who’ll have to move to a more accomodating defensive position sooner or later.
Also, they seem to like keeping their more ageing slugger types on a DH rotation (allowing them to give the likes of Posada, Matsui, Damon, Giambi etc. a day or two off from playing the field), AND they have an absolute monster hitting prospect who doesn’t seem likely to be anything other than a 1B or DH (or perhaps a very, very limited catcher who has to split time at DH) in Jesus Montero.
I think they’re about as stacked, going forward, at 1B/DH as any team in the AL, and they’ll have to shift one, maybe two, franchise players on enormous deals to make space for Albert. If any team could afford to swallow some pride and some dollars to make it happen, it’s the Yankees, but I just can’t see them jettisoning their top prospect AND getting rid of at least one of A-Rod or Tex to make this happen.

if Albert makes it to free agency, every team will try to sign him
and the Yankees especially will move heaven & earth to get him on their team. just because they have Tex, Arod & others under control doesn’t mean they won’t go after Albert.
Hope is the worst of all evils, for it prolongs the torment of man
Well what do they do with Tex and A-Rod then?
And ultimately Jeter, when he’s so old he can’t even fool anyone into thinking he can play SS anymore? Not to mention Montero? it’s not very easy to pay someone $25m to sit on the bench, and they can’t trade A-Rod, Jeter or Tex because they’re either too expensive for anyone else to pay, too popular to move (Jeter) or they have no-trade clauses.
Under Cashman they’ve been getting a lot more smart recently. Albert is, at best, a 3 win upgrade over Tex (maybe even a little less, with ageing taken into account). They’re not paying another $30m/yr, plus the additional $15m or whatever of luxury tax that’d sink, to acquire that upgrade, whilst having to move one or more cornerstone players to another team or to the bench, and I can’t see them moving Montero either. They’re not just playing with the most money now, they’re playing with smart money.

I agree If they were just loading up to load up
why not jump into the Holliday contract talks? They have actually been pretty tame lately.
Belief that success is inevitable is as likely to hold you back as a belief that it is impossible.
agree, imo it's not a discount
Mauer is probably something like a 6 WAR player, today, with a HUGE potential for catastrophic decline. This deal pays him like a 6 WAR player over the his age 28-30 seasons, then a decline of half a win/year the next 5 years (@4.5M/WAR, thats $183.5M). That’s extremely generous, imho. I’ll be shocked if he ages that well, and he’s being paid as if he’d already realized his (imo) best-case market value. Given the risk of him staying elite while catching 140ish games a year, i think this is a large overpay.
Of course, he’s a good defensive catcher, so he might be underrated by WAR. But since he’d lose close to 3 WAR moving to first base, that is mitigated by the fact that he basically HAS to stay at C the life of this contract (or be an elite defensive 1B, or greatly improve his offense after moving to 1B to make a position change work).
Anyway, this seems like a very player-friendly deal, and I think it’s higher-risk than a comparable deal to Albert would be for the same money. Not as insane as the A-Rod deal, but still player-friendly. If STL was willing to accept this same level of risk, I think Albert would get close to 50M more over 8 years, maybe more, even shifted 3-years to the right on the aging curve, since Albert is starting from a much higher talent level.
Well the girls would turn the color of the avocado when he would drive down the street in his El Dorado... -the modern lovers
I like to look at these big contracts however
with the idea that the team will get more ticket sales when the team shows that they will pay to bring in a good player for a long time, it lets the fans get more attached to the player and they also get merch sales, etc

I dunno.
Mauer is 27 and plays in the DH league. If he can catch until he’s 32 or 33 he’ll still likely be a 3 WAR player as a DH those last couple of seasons. If we gave Albert, who’s 30, the same deal, I think it’s about the same amount of risk at the end of the contract, and our contract might be more risky. Obviously the fact that Albert is worth twice as much with the bat helps his cause, but Mauer might earn his entire contract in the next 4 years, making the last four years gravy.

I've found quotes from 2004 when Pujols said he would not take a hometown
discount, but nothing recently. However, there have been rumors that he has re-itereated that statement recently. Nowhere, not here, or anywhere else that I’m aware of, has he said just the opposite; essentially, that he’d be willing to give the Cardinals a discount, if, say, they went out and signed lineup protection, e.g. (read, Holliday).

but 2010 seems a little sudden since he’s yet to show he can strike a lot of batters out or avoid walking them. Not sure I can see a scenario where he should make the pen ahead of Salas, at least at first.
yeah, he still has walked 5 in 8+ innings this spring
that’s more than a Boggs-ish level (or maybe not, but still…)

i agree with this
bullpen depth is so important, its good to have guys with upside to call up from the minors rather than kelvin jiminez
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
No
But why wouldn’t he make the pen ahead of Hawksworth if K-Mac ends up being the fifth starter?
Also, and this is the bigger question, do you put Ottavino in the bullpen at Memphis or does he go back to starting if demoted?
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
He should start
until he has absolutely proven that he can’t do it.

anyone want to guess if the deal is deferred and back-loaded?
by CodyG on Mar 21, 2010 6:19 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
The couple places I've read about it
It seems like that’s the terms of the actual deal.
I think it actually makes more sense for the Twins to do it that way, even though it seems to defy conventional wisdom. For one thing, they’ve got to figure the new stadium is going to provide them with a lot of additional revenue for at least the first 2-3 years of the contract, which allows them to make the middle to late years of the contract cheap by comparison to a back loaded contract.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?

Larussa says McClellan situation will be cleared up before next Sunday, maybe before, but no longer than, a week from today
also, (sorry if this has been linked already) Ottavino seems to be liked for a bullpen spot by the headline if McClellan is 5th starter material… article also hints at Salas or potential trade acquisition. also I guess we were right about assuming Hawksworth is in the ’pen

but I wonder if they would just cut him since they are not paying for him, if the situation arises where they can’t decide who to send back to Memphis. say like if Mather, Craig, and Gotay are all on fire at the end of spring training, what would they do? also this article makes it seem possible that they would only take 12 pitchers.

It's funny how fantasy baseball affects your view on players
For instance, I used to hate Kevin Youkilis. I don’t know what it was, the fact that he played for the Red Sox or that he looked like a huge lumbering oaf with his hands spread apart in the batters box, but I hated him. Then I got him on a fantasy team and he started wrecking fools. So I kinda like him now.

I remember I used to watch UFC when it came out in the early 90s
and people used to think it was very barbaric. then I stopped watching it cuz it was kinda boring, the fights were usually over pretty fast, and chute fighting and brazilian jiujitsu experts usually won back then. then at some point it was almost made illegal, then all the sudden in the last few years everyone and their mom is watching it.

I think that’s who I am thinking of. it’s a very effective fighting style. if you ever have to get in a fight, if you just defend as much as possible, try to use their offense against them, and then wrap them up with your arms and legs it’s pretty hard to get out of that lock. it was probably something slightly different back then.

Yeah
In a one on one street fight, jiu jitsu is pretty much the most effective thing you are going to come up with. You can train it for an hour and submit someone a lot stronger than you who hasn’t had that hour, which is most people. It’s not nearly as “cool” as knocking someone out, but you can very easily break someone’s arm or choke them out without that much training assuming the other person hasn’t had much either.
In the UFC at the highest level, bottom position jits being used as offense is basically dead at this point as everyone has spent enough time to learn submission defense, and defending submissions seems to be a lot easier to learn than offense. The current trend is for dominant wrestlers who can just take anyone down at will and pound on them. But the best standup fighters in the world don’t really go to the UFC because they can make a lot more money in boxing so who knows.
I find it intriguing because there are so many ways for a fight to go.
Not afraid to nitpick
that's why I like jiu jitsu best
it’s not flashy at all and it makes the other guy look bad, since you are just doing defense, and if you can wrap their arms around them and get your legs around them you can just squeeze them until they tap out, since they would have trouble breathing and it’s hard to get out of a lock with 4 limbs.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
well, you can't break arms easily
even trying to do it, you can’t do it. Not enough leverage. Same with dislocating shoulders, etc. I wrestled through college, D-I, won a lot more than I lost, finished at 190 lbs, and there were a couple of times I was antagonized enough (or desperate enough, and in position) to want to do those things, and you just can’t. Even in the perfect position, the human body is incredibly resilient; non-augmented human muscles just aren’t strong enough to break it, even at the highest level. Breaking bones or tearing muscles/tendons is almost always a result of altitude (a bad lift) coupled with falling grace failure on the part of the lifted.
OTOH, it’s pretty trivial (and a fun party trick) to make an untrained person pass out in about 45 seconds, with the right throat pressure in the right place. Forget tapping out, they just go bottoms-up, wake up 30 minutes later, and wonder wtf just happened.

I watch a little boxing too
but I find most boxing to be too staged at this point. Not to mention that the pace of boxing is absurdly slow.
The UFC has a more authoritarian approach to setting up their fights. It’s really evolved beyond what it was 15 years ago. There’s some crazy athletes in the UFC right now. It’s not for everyone but I love it. Unfortunately, I don’t really know anyone else who enjoys it so I’m left to watch most of the live events by myself.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
I enjoy the big fights in boxing
A few of my buddies and I bought the pay-per-view for Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton in anticipation of an awesome fight. We were all pulling for Hatton, hoping he would steal the fight in the later rounds. About halfway through the first round, we were all just hoping he’d make it through the first round. He got his ass stomped in that fight.
I haven’t gotten too into UFC. I did watch a Rampage Jackson fight on Beale in Memphis, everyone was pulling for Rampage, it was awesome.

I watched Pacquiao-Hatton
and Mayweather-Marquez. The Pacquiao-Clottey fight was unbelievably bad and is a big part of why I like MMA. When the rules allow someone to turtle up like Clottey (which I still think was the right gameplan for him) did for 12 rounds and Pacquiao basically has no recourse, it’s dumb. Someone does that in MMA and they’re going to get kicked in the legs or slammed to the ground.
Think; It's not illegal yet.

So, are we ever going to come to a consensus on the tag line?
Maybe we should take the most recced items on the page, and throw up a poll on the main thread. Sound good?
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
I think we should feed all the taglines into some kind of program that makes a tagline based on what the most common criteria are

i'm confused
i thought lopex was a nickname, in lieu of that floppy thing that was simply flop in dc, with negative connotations.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
i dunno
my take was someone made a typo and everyone repeated it because it was so hilarious
does it actually mean something?
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
There's a lot of turning on ourselves today...
"The two most important things in life: good friends and a strong bullpen." - Bob Gibson
shut the fuck up, tape!
okay, i’m probably just being grumpy. i’m gunta bed
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
and yet, not one person was aroused
how sad
