2010 VEB March Madness Open Thread

Seeing as how tom s. complained about the volume of NCAA tournament content in the main page post comments, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread dedicated to VEB March Madness discussion. This thread is here in the hopes that the main page posts' comment sections will remain college basketball-free while we hyperventilate over quasi-prospects and worry about when Matt Holliday will get healthier.

As I type this, St. Mary's is up 12 on 2-seed Villanova. If this result holds, my bracket is wrecked; but there's something just so likeable about St. Mary's, that I just don't think I would mind.

Happy Boogday and enjoy the madness!

looks like coming out of high school he was a 310 pounder.

Now he is listed around 265. I guess the other programs didn’t trust him to be in the best shape of his life?

Kansas losing doesn't really affect anyone.

I mean seriously, who the hell would have UNI beating Kansas? Everyone is screwed.

But my Sweet 16 is fine besides losing GU, Kansas, and Villanova.

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

They'd been showing WVU/Missouri here

The last I saw MSU was wearing Maryland out, so I kinda forgot about that game. All of a sudden they switched over without any warning and you could hear the announcer say something like “Maryland has its first lead since it was 7-6!” (or something like that) That was a great ending. MSU hits a shot, Maryland (Vasquez) hits a shot, MSU hits the game winner. No misses or timeouts.

Bah, whatever.

Guess I am an old school kind of guy. Don’t get me wrong, I do like high scoring games, but I do appreciate the effort kids make to play D. It’s kind of slow, but whatever, I can deal with it.

In fact, look at some numbers of Big Ten teams in the tournament. If you look at Ohio State in it’s title game run a few years ago, their scoring average went from around 64 to 83 or so. The Big Ten can play up to the other conferences speed, but chooses not to.

big 10 football can be summed up in 7 words

three yards, and a cloud of dust

you can say the same about their basketball. it’s unoriginal & D oriented. for whatever reason they can’t seem to put forth good offensive game plans. all they do if try to keep the other team from scoring. and pardon us, but that’s boring as hell. the entire fucking point of sports is to try & score more runs & points than the opposition, not just try & keep them from scoring on you

by gdm426 on Mar 21, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You most certainly can win if the other team doesn't score

For instance, you could score one (point/run/goal), and win 1-0. Or, you could score 2 and win 2-0.

by jd is legend on Mar 22, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

right, but you have to try & score in order to do that

the big 10 doesn’t really try to score that much. they do try a little, they just try harder to stop the other team from scoring.

as a SLU student

harsh but true. It sucks that at the end of the in conference schedule we couldn’t fill Chaifetz. The team is actually more than decent and exciting (at least, more exciting than when Soderberg was there) and Majerus is Majerus but St. Louis just does not care about college sports, especially when any Cardinals is competing

by cardball on Mar 24, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

combination of

him wanting to get back into coaching because his health was better, SLU being a Jesuit university, St. Louis being close enough to Milwaukee that he can visit his mom, and a newfound dedication by the administration to have a quality bball program, especially with the beautiful new Chaifetz Arena on campus. That was a huge upgrade over playing all home games in the cavernous Scottrade Center off-campus.
That dedication has been the source of some consternation lately. Fr. Biondi (president) is known as a very hardheaded and stubborn leader and the presence of charter flights has brought on some negative consequences, mainly consisting of Majerus ranting about how the MVC is a much better geographic fit (which many took to mean SLU should move to the MVC, a constant and stupid debate that occurs whenever talk about SLU is raised), and about the academic difficulties the team faces, brought on by a stretch of 10 days in Philly after being stuck by snow.
Majerus is really recruiting and coaching at a level SLU hasn’t seen in a long time, possibly ever. If he and the administration can get along and follow the plan he has devised, SLU should be a top 25 team at some point in the next two years and definitely in the tournament for the next few years.
/end SLU rant

Apparently the Perth coach is good friends with one of SLU’s assistants. The assistant (Chris Harriman) played a huge part in the recruitment of the two Australian freshman on the team this year.
Theresa Lisch did play for the women’s team and would have been a senior this year with a halfway decent chance of the team being top half of the A10 this year, but she left with her new husband, Trent Meacham, former point guard at Illinois who graduated and is playing in Europe.

With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

i'm more of an indiana fan than an illinois

despite growing up in illinois. this is because of bobby knight, but i’m pretty sure he’d agree that sampson was a taint on the program, and a somewhat desperate move.

Oh, I hated the move

In fact, I wanted Tom Crean back when we hired Sampson, it was a huge ass gamble, and it didn’t pay off. Hell, I can remember like a week before the whole thing broke out that we were flying high. We had a bunch of high level stars coming back even if Gordon left, Ebanks coming in, Terrell Holloway, a starting PG for Xavier now.

But hey, hindsight is 20/20. The program just needed a good coach after the Mike Davis fiasco, and Sampson was that, he was just doing it the wrong way :).

that guys has no idea what he’s talking about. the big ten may have gotten three teams in the sweet 16 and out of luck may actually advance two of them, and out of luck may actually get one into the final four, but that doesn’t mean any of those teams is going to win.

i just hate the big ten

and they’re getting all the credit in the world right now even though they were the fifth best conference this year in terms of rpi. now, michigan state and ohio state deserve credit for taking care of business and making it to the sweet 16 when they should have (both beating acc teams on the way) but both have now gotten EXTREMELY lucky in terms of the their draws and overall chances of making the final four.

purdue beat a big 12 team, so i guess i can’t really make my argument for the big 12 there. however, they also got a good draw in getting to face the weakest one seed in the sweet 16.

i just hate that the big ten is getting lots of credit for simply getting good draws and other conferences (read: big east and big 12) being victims of upsets getting called not as successful as the big ten. it’s garbage.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 24, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

as it stands now michigan st would be the favorite in their region to make the final four

IF lucas did not go down. and you have to give purdue credit for getting this far without their best player – remember, they’re probably a 1 seed IF hummel doesn’t go down.

I realize the Big Ten in both football and basketball is not a desirable style of play for just about anyone to watch. Bu what I really like is seeing people get their panties in a bunch over someone saying a basketball conference is having a good tourney. That is entertaining.

with butler and w.va. in

the final four will be comprised of teams from 4 different conferences – the sec and big 12 had the chance to get 2 each going in to today.

Thank God

I don’t think I would sleep if Calipari won a championship.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
