Elijah Dukes: Yes/No?
Now, I don't expect the Cardinals at all to sign Elijah Dukes, but he is still incredibly talented and only 25. On the plus side, you have good power, very good patience, and speed, matched up with so-so defense. On the minus side, you have, well, everything else.
He's reportedly cleaned up his act a bit since he has been in Washington, but he's never going to shake his reputation, and rightfully so. The report out of Washington was that this was about his inability to hit a breaking ball, but who can say for sure. If I had to guess, I would say Dukes will end up in Pittsburgh, where all careers go to die.
EDIT:
2008: .264/.386/.478 with 13 HR in 334 PA with 50 BB and 13-17 SB
2009: .250/.337/.393 with 8 HR in 416 PA , 46 BB and 3-13 SB
Now, he battled injuries in 2009, so maybe you can attribute some of those to his bad year.
In the field, he has
8.6 UZR in 81.1 innings in LF
-22.2 UZR in 614 innings in CF
2.8 UZR in 1152.1 innings in RF
So decent defense, albeit a small sample size

nah
why would we need him? he’s a good ballplayer, but we have Mather, Craig, Jay, etc as extra outfielders. outfield glut is back

does this mean Luddy isn’t very good?

this is true
I was just giving an analog as to how both players had a great year, then a not so great year. an .864 OPS for Dukes in ‘08 is nothing to scoff at (his behavior, however, is something to scoff at, or hate him over, etc). just saying that he’s a good ballplayer, at least in that one season. .734 OPS in ‘09 isn’t very impressive, however.

how'd he go from 2.8 WAR to replacement level though...
kinda weird. his fielding went from being an asset to a problem…. unless that’s just the UZR fluctuating. his hitting got worse too though, he must’ve been injured last year. too bad he’s a total dickface though.

the dickface and the reduction in output might be somewhat linked

he's freely available talent.
he’s a decent player. but to pick him up for a role position off the bench? mather and craig seem like 1-1.5 WAR players over a full season, so over the 250 PA’s they’ll probably get, more like half a win. if you subbed in dukes you’d get a very minor upgrade in a part time role.
is that worth a) denying a chance to two talented OF prospects? and b) putting up with dukes’s clubhouse and off-field problems? probably not.
but if i were the royals, oh hell yes.

i should have said, if a semi-competent person were running the royals, hell yes.

Dukes is more of a prospect than Craig or Mather
by vivaelpujols on Mar 21, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions
he is more of a prospect, based on his talent
but I’d also say that he is a less valuable prospect based on his head

you think he has a higher ceiling than 2-2.5 war?
it seems like craig and mather are 1-1.5 war players. i don’t think they’re identical, just that dukes ceiling was only a little better.

Don't really know about Dukes
but I think it’s a little unfair on both players to say (if, indeed, you are saying that – I wasn’t totally clear on this) that Craig and Mather both have a 1-1.5 WAR ceiling. I’m pretty sure Craig’s MLEs last year were close to average for a corner outfielder, and it seems likely that Mather’s talent must translate to an even higher ceiling that Craig’s.

i was trying to be somewhat conservative; both mather and craig's projections are consistent with a 1 to 1.5 war
performance this season. sure, either could get up to the 2 WAR range or over. i wasn’t being clear with the terms i was using.

anybody see that pissing match between sampras and agassi at the charity event? pistol hit a serve at agassi’s head – they were playing doubles with nadal and federer, and agassi wasn’t receiving the serve, nadal was.

I thought Andre crossed the line
especially since he threw Pete under the bus in his book as well.
Bottom line, they’ve never liked each other, and Andre has always been upset that Pete was always considered the better player because his game was more suited to Wimbledon, and his career also coincided with the metal racket and the loss of interest in doubles tennis. I think if Andre had played in the previous generation (with Johnny Mac, Connors, Borg, etc.) he would be considered a much better player because he was a good doubles player when he wanted to be, would have handled grass easier with wooden rackets because the serves would have been controlled a bit more so he could use groundstrokes from the baseline and be more successful. FWIW, Andre owned Pete until about 1990, then it went the other direction for most of the rest of their careers.
It’s kinda like Woods and Mickelson in a way. Woods plays a limited schedule and focuses on winning majors, Phil plays just about every tournament he can, is media savvy, likes relating to fans, and has a great game that tends to lose focus at times.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
absolutely not...
the thought of Dukes on the roster and Craig in AAA makes me ill. I’d love to see him sign with the cubs, though

mo should tell him, “i’ve just signed dukes to a mlb contract.”

I don't see where he would fit in with us, I'm afraid
although I heard he has one more minor league option, so maybe that would be worth considering. I don’t think he’s an upgrade over anything we have currently.

I’ll pass.

Rumors that Rangers were interested after Khalil Greene had another meltdown. He’s not going to get much playing time with Felipe Lopez, and unless his piss poor defense was the result of an injury, he won’t be much better than Tyler Greene, if he’s better at all.
