Spring Training Split Squad?
The split squad. This regular occurence in the Spring Training schedule is much like when they served Salisbury Steak at lunch in elementary school. I hate it.
However, much of my hate is out of ignorance. I'm not really sure what all this entails, as I've never been to a split squad game. I'm assuming it means exactly what it says, the squad is divided to play two different games.
But, if I buy tickets to the March 13 split squad game against Houston, what will I be seeing? Only one game is scheduled for that day. Where is the split? What is likely to occur? If you have any previous knowledge from experience, please post. I don't want to fork out $30 to watch the ghosts of Gene Stechshulte and Garrett Stephenson try to strike out Richard Hidalgo.
Is it a waste of money or not?

I've Never Been to a ST Game, But...
I would think these games are “buyer beware”. I think they go with split squads to give more young guys a chance for more PAs. Therefore, if you go to a split squad game, I think you have to expect that many players will be B-List type guys.
TLDR – If you see Albert in two at-bats, consider yourself fortunate and move on.
Houston is splitting it's squad not the Cards
Check out Houston’s spring schedule and you’ll see that they are keeping half the squad to play Washington. The Astros team won’t include many of the vets since it’s a 2 hour bus ride from Kissimmee.
Like what ubeddie said.
It’s often done when there’s a long bus trip and the “younger” players usually have to go on the trip while the more established players stay in town and play the game at home.
It’s not a double header but you do play two games in one day, it’s just that one game is at home and the other is on the road, so you split the team into two teams. Honestly, the younger players really benefit from it.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
Bottom line
You are in Florida in 80ish degree weather. You haven’t been to a baseball game since last September or October. It about being outside and eating a hotdog and feeling that everything is right with the world. You have to remember that TLR already likes to tinker with his lineups and ST is an excuse to really go crazy with it. You might see most of the regulars in a game with Pete Kozma manning short. But it’s baseball and a sign of good things to come start April.
