Friday Morning Open Thread

These are baseball players, and that is a warm day. From November through January we look around moon-eyed for one or both things; by July we will probably take at least one night game, probably against the Pirates, for granted while something else is going on. But right now I can't think of anything more satisfying than the thought that this photo was taken yesterday.

I'll be on the road today; regular programming resumes tomorrow. At that time I promise more photos of baseball players who do not need to wear coats over sweatshirts when they go outside to get the mail.

can't wait for the first ST game

Couldn’t agree with you more, DanUpBaby. Here in southern New Jersey we’ve had 75+ inches of snow- the most since they began keeping records in 1884. There’s still about 2 feet of it on the ground. Every step while walking the dog you sink in up to your knee and have to pull your foot out. No need for any leg workout machines around here. So the videos on the MLB network are particularly attractive this year. Hope to see at least portions of some Cardinal games. Everything seems a little more relaxed this year, probably because the basic core of the team is set. We know who’s batting 3,4,5 and the first 4 of 5 in the rotation. Bring on the season.

yeah, it's been a coldy, snowy winter in england, too

we had a solid 6 week period below freezing over december and most of january, which is pretty unusual. Can’t wait for the crack of ash on leather…

I love

spending the winter in Phoenix. There are only 2 problems with this. One is that the Cards are in Jupiter, the second is that the nearest spring training park is HoHokam, where the Cubs train. So, my choices are to preview the enemy, go further to watch the Athletics, Giants, or Angels, watch ASU baseball, or closest to me, watch Central Arizona College. I love the dilemmas that retirement and wintering in the USA present to one. When I get bored with baseball, I can go watch the Suns or Coyotes, or go hiking or mootorcycling. Spring indeed!

And yet...

We’ve had one of the mildest winters on record here in Oregon. It’s 60 and sunny today in FEBRUARY in Portland. Usually it’s about 42 and showers from November to April.

oddly enough

Boston has had a pretty mild winter too, relatively speaking. I mean, it’s been long, but for the most part it hasn’t dipped below the 30s and the snowfall that’s blanketed the NE hasn’t hit here. Funny thing is, when I moved from STL last year everyone told me I was making a mistake because of the cold weather here, but its probably been warmer here than in STL this winter (I know it was during winter break when I was in STL and every GD day for two weeks it was in the single digits or teens)

The best part of it though

was going back to grad school and having to go out and survey. Walking in with the Carhart overalls and the professor saying ‘you look like you’ve done this a time or two before’. It was great cause it was in the 20s and I was fine… everyone else looked like they’ve never seen temperatures so cold before. The one thing nice about being out it stuff that cold is feeling like you’ve actually earned your money that day.

Us too

here in southern Colorado. We had a few inches a week or so ago, but hardly any all winter, compared to last year. Of course, it’s still only February, and March and April have been known to bring lots of wet snow…and, just checked the forecast, and they’re calling for rain mixed with snow for the next 3 days, then back in the 50’s by the end of next week.

Only slightly less well known than "Never fight a Land war in Asia"

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

I also like the Win mobile OS

It is a lot easier to hack and tinker with than most people realize. The Android OS is not to bad also. It will getter better as time goes along. As long as it remains open source and remains easy to write programs for it. I am not a fan of the Iphone. Much better after it is jail broken.

by The Continental on Feb 19, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

i don't like it for its memory utilization

at least in my experience winmobile doesn’t actually free up memory when you close an app, and even with HTC’s customized version that allows for “closing” of the actual app instead of hiding it I still idle above 50% memory at all times and this leads to lock ups or slowdowns on a regular basis, don’t even try to download entire email messages or check for email frequently and most good mobile webpages are written for iPhones, BlackBerries or Android and mobile IE gets the shaft. I also hate that my touch screen doesn’t allow for scrolling similar to the iPhone where you can drag a finger across it to scroll, I have to instead pull out my stylus and use the windows like scroll bar or do a page down function with the direction pad. To me it is just clunky but I could see why others would love it.

Leach on any roster moves

I don’t know if someone posted this last night, but I thought I’d pass it along. Leach Being Leach (which is a good thing) over at his Mothership blog:

Both TLR (to the group of us) and Mozeliak (to me in a chat this afternoon) reiterated that the Cardinals are not in any hurry to add an infielder or anything else. They’re aware that Brendan Ryan’s injury is something that could create some complications, but there will be no overreaction.

Reports continue to swirl that the Cardinals are “pursuing” Felipe Lopez, but let’s be realistic here. It’s Feb. 18. If they were really pursuing him that hard, they’d likely have signed him. More probable is that they’re keeping the lines of communication open in case the fit suddenly becomes better.

Here’s TLR on the situation: “I think we’re doing the things to protect ourselves. I don’t think you go out there and trade for an everyday shortstop. We expect him to come back, and we cover until he comes back. I think that’s one of the things we’ve talked about, some protection, infield, outfield.”

“He’s coming on his report date,” Mozeliak said. “We didn’t feel like we needed to change flights or anything like that. there’s not a whole lot he could have done today, tomorrow, this weekend.”

Meanwhile, Mozeliak said that he expected any move the Cardinals made would likely take place late in camp. He also said he had no issues with Ryan waiting until next week to arrive.

I agree, it makes complete sense

With as many stopgap solutions as the Cardinals already have (ie Greene, Lugo), Ryan’s situation isn’t a big deal even if he misses the start of the season. Even taking into consideration his UZR prowess, I’m not sold on Ryan’s overall value. Yet.

Need a little help

I am looking for a good equivalent for WARP (or WAR) for seasons prior to 1954. I know that WARP uses play-by-play data that is incomplete prior to that, but I want to find a counterpoint to Win Shares that removes the replacement level from the equation. Any links you could provide would be appreciated.

Historical Win Shares?

And I’m pretty sure that historic WAR is available, but I cannot, for the life of me, find the link.

Thanks for giving me hope, at the very least, on the WAR data. I have the WS file already, although I prefer thumbing through my Win Shares book; it just feels better.

Which is more valuable

Over the course of a season, is a 5th starter more valuable in terms of WAR than a setup or ROOGY reliever? If so, I think that is why we must wait before signing another bullpen arm.

by tete des morts on Feb 19, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't that question very situation-dependent?

It’s not value in a vacuum. It’s value over what presently exists. One bad bullpen injury can really damage a team in the way it has to shuffle other releivers around.

I’m actually pretty confident that we can cobble a season’s worth of #5 starting with what we presently have.

I’m more worried about our bullpen, with no righties that can actually shut down another lineup.

Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.

another righty who can get righties out would be a big boost, I think

hence, Springer or calero. Springer’s already said he’d sign for a discount to play here again, so I think he’s pretty low-risk. If we can get him for $1m, why not? We’re paying Pete Parise half a mill if he’s on the roster all year…

Don’t know why the Rays didn’t go after him harder, but still, he could be in Seattle right now with a much better deal.

"I hope I'll be safe at home!"

nowhere to put him I think

not sure he can play 3B every day (although he did for a while in Milwaukee) – maybe also our management didn’t appreciate the guy. He hit very well for a long time but never put up eye-popping stats because he was only taking 200 ABs most years, if that, and bouncing around. Despite the sabr-love for the guy, seems (according to this contract) he’s still highly under-rated.

He’d have been one of my favourite targets if we didn’t get Holliday – I thought him and Jack Cust were the best two non-holliday/bay hitters on the market. Turns out we coulda get those two PLUS Floppy Lopez for about $10m this season, still signed Penny, maybe Rich Harden, and had change for the bullpen…

Hey, at least they got the team right.

It could be worse. I remember back in 2000, there was a game where gnats or something descended on Busch like a plague. One of the non-sports columnists – Jerry Berger, I believe – mentioned the spectacle, saying that Barry Bonds, left fielder for the LOS ANGELES DODGERS, looked surly and upset with the development.

Opening Day lineup options . . . discuss:

I have been doing my best TLR impression and putting together lineups in my head all day. I keep coming back to the fact that there is NO number 2 hitter on this team (other than maybe Matt Holliday, and assuming Gotay doesn’t repeat his minor league numbers from last year). That means Colby will almost certainly be hitting out of position.

Now, imagine that Floppy is on this team and shuffles between 3B, SS, and 2B. It instantly changes the whole face of the lineup. I fully agree that the cards have the luxury of seeing how their depth plays out in the spring, but I can’t imagine any scenario where the team looks better than it would with Lopez on a cheap 1-year deal hitting behind Skip.

Opening day Lineup

Schumaker
Molina
Pujols
Holliday
Ludwick
Rasmus
Freese
Greene
Carp/Waino

I like the idea of Molina in front of Pujols, you aren’t worried about speed in that spot but Yadi does have a penchant for GIDP which would be horrible in front of AP.

"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."
