The Pitchers and Catchers Report Day Celebratory Talkathon Thread

Photo

The day has finally come. Pitchers and Catchers Report Day. One of the holiest of holidays on the baseball fan's calendar.

Okay, so sure, most of the pitchers and catchers have already been there in Florida for a week now. And sure, most of the position players are right there with them, taking early ground balls at positions they've never played before and just generally getting into TBSOML. None of that matters.

I'm excited, folks. No, scratch that. I'm more than excited. I am pumped. I'm jacked. I'm, um, how about scorched? Is that a word that construes excitement? If not, it should be. Proclamation: from now on, all VEB members will refer to states of extreme excitement as being scorched. The Baron has spoken.

Scorched may not even be enough. I'm literally giddy with anticipation. I'm like Tony Robbins getting laid on Christmas morning in the middle of Disney World. That's how excited I am to find myself typing this missive to you all on this holy day.

I have no topic today; a topic would really only cheapen the moment. What I do have, however, is about two and a half hours of free time, so let's chat. On-topic, off-topic, I frankly don't give a damn. Let's see if we can't bring down the servers with the traffic today. Actually, make that two and a half hours, a cup of oolong tea, half a Yoo-Hoo in the fridge, the Hot Stove show on MLB Network on the television, and a bowl of Spaghetti-O's. Let's rock.

The Baron's Playlist for the 17th of February, 2010 - Valentine's Day is Over

"I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes)" - Nina Simone

"Heartbroke" - The Good Life

"White Blank Page" - Mumford & Sons (Seriously, listen to this song. Right effing now.)

"Sometime Around Midnight" - The Airborne Toxic Event

"Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" - Spiritualized

"Why Can't He Be You?" - Patsy Cline

"Make War" - Bright Eyes

"Paper Thin Hotel" - Leonard Cohen

"Just the Motion" - Richard and Linda Thompson

"One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)" - Frank Sinatra

"Beer" - Reel Big Fish

As we sit here today, I agree. I think it's been very good.

Although, I admit that I think the last handful episodes last season were the show’s best. I really feel like they missed an opportunity. Rather that diving right back into Buy More, I wish they would have covered his training a bit more and built up the Casablanca homage train scene as the moment before the Olympics, leaving us all on a cliff for two weeks. I say this just because I feel the first episode of the season glossed over these happenings in a way that made me really concerned for the series. However, the show has rebounded nicely and is pretty awesome. I also love going from Chuck the spy to Jack Bauer the spy on Mondays.

True

but in their defense, they didn’t know that Leno was going to be cancelled when they were writing the show and they hadn’t yet been renewed for a full season. With a limited run of episodes you kinda want to get on to the next thing as quickly as possible to show the network that it was going to stick so they could get more episodes green lighted.

I think this has a lot to do with this, and it’s also why I think we’re seeing some of this in flashback now.

fake sumo wrestling

Of all the people (players, coaches, etc) at the jupiter complex; who would win in a fake sumo suit wrestling match? My money would be on either Murphy the bullpen catcher, joey bombs or Bernie Miklasz.

To be fair,

I’m not sure Miklasz would be allowed in a sumo suit match. He’s, um, overqualified, if you take my meaning. I’ll go with Mather. His good lucks would stun his opponent long enough for him to land a killing blow. Plus, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of wrist stuff in fake sumo.

How do you see the Bullpen shaking out? How many guys in the pen and who?

Seven bullpenners.

I see Franklin, Motte, K-Mac definitely on. The two lefties. Boggs in all likelihood.

That leaves one spot, I think, for all of those guys to compete with Hawksworth. I think the Hawk probably wins the spot. However, seeing as how I made Salas my Spring Surprise pick, I think he could definitely sneak in.

I don’t think Sanchez has much of a shot this year. Maybe sometime during the season, if the Cards need an arm (and they always do), but I just don’t see him starting the year in St. Louis.

I hope not,

but I just don’t see a spot. I would really like to see him sneak in, but I’m not sure whose spot he takes. Hawksworth is out of options, I believe. Maybe Boggs starts out in Triple A, but I kind of doubt it. I think the staff really likes what they saw from Boggs at the end of last season out of the ’pen and would like to get a better look. (I think most of us are in that camp, also.)

Carp
Waino
Lohse
Penny

Franklin
Motte
Kmac
Reyes
Miller

That leaves Hill, Jukich, Boggs, Hawksworth, Garcia, plus the other longer shots with three spots between them. I hate Hawksworth, but I don’t see how he doesn’t stick unless his spring is just abominable or he gets injured. The Hawk is being considered for the rotation, however, so perhaps that leaves a low-leverage bullpen spot open. Boggs is the next most likely to stick, and with his skillset and connections he could be a basic lock.

Among the final three, I think Garcia is either in the rotation or in the minors. I don’t see Hill factoring in without a miracle, so Jukich is either the last man on the roster, or the odd man out. Perhaps Ryan Franklin will get a hangnail?

His strikeout and walk rates were almost equal,

and his BABIP was in the low .200s with a LOB% in the 80s. His HR/FB is 5.3%.

IMO, with normal luck he’s just above replacement level. He could be a decent pitcher in the rotation because he has shown a high GB%, but that could easily be another mirage. In any case, if his rise kicks Boggs (already an average pitcher with high upside) or Jukich (a free player who I think could be better than Hawksworth), then I hate him.

On the one hand, I really like the idea of SIERA's attempt at reconciling GB%,

with RA a bit more closely than FIP does. Honestly, I’m not sure what to make of it yet. From the initial work, it looks pretty promising for some things, but it seems unlikely to unseat FIP (which is the stat I usually prefer for such retrodiction) due to its less elegant formula and weaker predictive abilities.

I’ve more or less neglected to substantively comment on this before because I’ve been too busy to really look into the math myself.

Also, I do get a warm nostalgic feeling actually hearing about BP coming out with something new and useful, and it would be good if BP became very relevant (and differentiated from other sites) again to counterbalance what seems to me to be the waxing influence of the fangraphs/LL/BtB crowd.

His strikeout and walk rates were almost equal,
and his BABIP was in the low .200s with a LOB% in the 80s. His HR/FB is 5.3%.

You are basing this (from memory) on about 50-odd innings in major league baseball. There’s a lot of reasons not to want Blake Hawksworth throwing important innings for the Cards next year but, in my opinion, his major league stats so far should not really be one of them.

by Felonius_Monk on Feb 17, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Certainly it's a SSS,

but his ERA was spectacular, and it’s quite possible to look at that and think something like ‘future closer’ or some such. If anything, I’m probably overreacting in the opposite direction: Those stats were basically founded on complete BS, but underneath the BS, Hawksworth could be a decent pitcher.

When Hawk came up and closed out that extra inning win, there was a lot of irrational exuberance and overestimation of him. I’m probably still reacting to that.

His stuff seemed fine- Fastball/Changeup mostly, with a few badly controlled sliders. His fastball was fast, but his changeup wasn’t really slow, lacking the velocity separation that characterizes very good changeups. His control wasn’t great, but he was generating ground balls and I think his HR rate could be somewhat sustainable.

I’d say his upside is something like Aaron Heilman or Joel Pineiro if things really work out well for him.

I’ll say it again: I’d prefer to see him at #5 in the rotation rather than in the pen. His skillset that I’ve seen (lots of BIP, lots of baserunners) just doesn’t look like bullpen material to me.

by hazel on Feb 17, 2010 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that all sounds very fair

I think I agree. He had a genuinely decent year in AAA (although again his FIP seems built on what may be an unsustainable HR%) which seems to suggest he could be a sub-5.00 FIP guy as a starter in the majors, or maybe a 4.50-odd FIP reliever/swingman. At the very least, he’s a good Thompson replacement, and I think he may well end up being a bit better – I’m broadly impressed by his fastball (just from having watched the guy, nothing more), it seems lively with decent sink and tail and he locates it well, as well as his demeanour on the mound.

I still think there’s a tiny shred of upside in that he’s not hitting the velocities he was pre-injury; I wonder if there’s not a slim chance he might add 1-2mph to his FB as his arm strengthens (I know very little about this sort of thing, but I believe pitchers have done so in the past a year or two after injury) which could really help his game, both because his FB already looks major-league ready (unlike, say, PJ Walters’), and another 1-2mph of FB/CH separation could turn that change into a viable out pitch, too.

TBH, I’m happy to just let the pieces fall as they may with Hawksworth – if KMac makes it as 5th starter (which I kind of doubt, but which would be helpful), Hawk can be the long-man in the pen, and we can see what he has. Otherwise, I actually like him in the 6th starter role (providing we sign no-one else) behind Garcia, but, given he’s out of options, we probably have to hide him in the back end of the pen as a swingman. I’m fine with that too, really.

I'm not really informed on his injury history,

I’ll look into it, although I doubt he will be adding speed- if he improves his control and maintains his speed that would be plenty for me.

by hazel on Feb 17, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, his last surgery was probably too long ago for there to be lingering velocity issues.

He could be suffering the standard prospect velocity drop, where kids who were working in the mid nineties in A ball suddenly are throwing around 92 when we get a look at them. I assume this is caused by scout bias- they discount slower pitches from affecting the average speed if the pitcher hits 95 often enough.

by hazel on Feb 17, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting in that....

Hawksworth’s FB seemed to take a big velocity jump out of the pen. If that trend continues, I’d rather him be in the pen than in the rotation, where his velocity falls back to 90 mph or so.

Also, because I think Hawk is pretty “meh,” I’d rather keep him in the bullpen (preferably in the mythical, low-leverage long role) where he’ll presumably get less innnings than he would in the 5th spot.

Says PJ Walters-

90 MPH is no joke. Hawksworth has other skills (high GB rate, low HR rate) that make him a good candidate for the rotation. Many pitchers improve their control at lower speeds, and if Hawksworth could do the same he’d have something to rely on other than smoke and mirrors.

Having been a 6' RH who topped out at 86-88 (and whose hopes of a baseball career ended in college)

I know all too well that 90 mph is no joke. (If only I were a lefty!)

I meant that I seem to remember Hawk hitting 95 somewhat consistently out of the pen last year, a velocity that he didn’t touch while starting. If he can control a 94+ mph fastball out of the bullpen, he’ll be an asset there that I don’t think he’ll be in the rotation (other than as filler).

by Willie McGee's Twin on Feb 17, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

I've thought for a while that Walters' future might be in the pen

since about 2008, I think. He has the out-pitch (that apparently great change that we didn’t really see last year, and I actually thought his slider looked decent too, at least somewhere approaching average). His big problem AFAIK (other than some minor control/nibbling problems) is that his fastball kinda sucks. I reckon if he could add 2-3mph in the pen as a specialist reliever, he wouldn’t have to nibble quite so much and could make a real go of it in terms of attacking with first-pitch fastballs, and he definitely has the secondary weapons (I’d have thought, looking at his scouting reports and minor league K numbers) to put batters away.

Given he looks pretty replacement level as a starter, I don’t see what we’d have to lose by giving him a season as the de facto closer in Memphis and seeing what sort of stuff he can come out of the pen with, if he’s doing that as a full-time job.

If he doesn’t improve as a starter (and IMO he’s pretty much got no projection left in that regard) I’d be perfectly happy if we simply have Ottavino or Hearn or someone as plan D (as it is, I think Walters is something like 8th or 9th on the starter depth chart, so if we have to use him much next year we’re probably out of it anyway), and give my little pet “Walters to the pen” project a chance.

Hawk's options

I didn’t realize that he’s been on the 40 man since Nov 2006. I believe he’d be claimed if the Cards tried to send him through waivers. With all the bullpen departs from last year, I don’t think the Cards would want to risk losing the Hawk

Looks like Josh has one more season with Memphis.

Hawk was added to the 40 man in Nov 2006, optioned off the 25 man to Memphis after ST in 2007 (3/16/07) , 2008 (can’t find) & 2009 (3/22/09) so I believe Hawk is out of options.

I think it depends on Ryan's fitness

if Ryan’s out, Tyler Greene is the starting SS and the bench is LaRue, Lugo, Craig, Jay and Gotay. If Ryan’s in, I guess you can swap the Goat for Tyler Greene. I’m guessing Mather isn’t healthy/productive enough to make the cut.

My possibly-maybe wildcard earlier in the year, Mark Hamilton, isn’t looking so likely now… I still think he’d be worth a chance if we have enough flexible guys to cover the other roles and we literally just want a lefty bat for the bench.

Hamilton & Jay

These guys have to be our trade candidates this season don’t they? Both are odd men out on the MLB roster, and both should have value on the trade market: One is a possible 3TO player at first base with lots of production in the power department, and the other is an excellent defensive outfielder who can hit a little but probably not enough to start. Obviously neither has a LOT of upside, and neither is going to have a lot of value, but if you could trade them together for a bullpen guy, reclamation project starting pitcher, or trade deadline salary dump, it would make sense to do that deal, no?

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Feb 17, 2010 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

You'd think so.

I think Jay in particular makes a really good trade candidate. Hamilton could have some value sticking around with this team for a year or two as a power bat off the bench/extra 1b type guy. Jay, on the other hand, has Tyler Henley pushing up behind him, who is essentially the same player.

Make way for the Homo Superior.

by the red baron on Feb 17, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

The problem with Jay

was that horrible AAA season he’s just had. I think he’d have had more value at the end of 2008, so I’m concerned we’d be “selling low” on him somewhat if we traded him now. I’m not sure either player is worth very much, especially as much of Jay’s value comes from his ability to play CF well.

I actually think Craig is our most likely player to get dealt, and I wouldn’t mind doing so if it brought back a young starter or something like a high-end young bullpen arm (one of the many Oakland guys, for instance). I had considered doing a fanpost about trading Craig for Glen Perkins (Twins 4th/5th starter, soft-tossing lefty) a while back – whilst I think Craig is the better player, I think getting a cheap pre-arby starter with the ability to touch league-average wouldn’t be a bad haul in return.

I dunno about Hamilton

He can really only play on position and he doesn’t even do that very well. I just think that makes him a really limited bench bat, kinda like Thome was for the Dodgers last year only with the best player alive in front of him instead of James Loney. If he could be flipped to a team like the Giants, where he might get some decent PT at 1B, and we could get someone like Nick Noonan or something in return, I don’t think that would be an awful deal.

yeah

I pretty much stir-fry all my veggies these days. GF likes boiling stuff but I think that’s more from a lack of culinary imagination than actually liking it – although I do like gently simmering carrots in a little bit of water, and then piling something like shredded cabbage on the top to steam, pouring off the water after a minute or two, and dropping in a chunk of butter, salt & pepper to stir in. That’s about the only veggie-boiling I do these days.

It looks a really nice recipe fourstick

I might try it – it does looks like a hell of a lot of fish sauce, mind you, which is salty as hell, so I might use a little less. I think you could get much the same effect, flavour-wise, by doing them shredded & stir-fried with the same ingredients, so I might try that too. Should be a nice side-dish for saturday!

That's a good point

I don’t use as much Fish Sauce as this calls for, I season really heavy flavors like saltiness or sweetness to taste rather than following the actual recipe. You could substitute some of the more Korean fish sauces if you can find them — they are less salty than the variety listed here.

I only have the thai variety

nam pla. It’s pretty salty and smells utterly revolting when it’s used to, say, deglaze a pan or otherwise when it’s evaporating. It tastes good, though, as a seasoning.

In the summer, we like to do a thai-style beef salad, get the bbq outside with some nice steaks on it, cook them medium-rare, slice thinly and toss into a crunchy salad with a warm dressing made with a ton of olive oil, lime, lemongrass, fish sauce, garlic and chillie. I usually fry the garlic & chillie in the hot oil, drop in a stick of lemongrass, throw in a bunch of fish sauce to boil/deglaze and then squeeze in a bunch of limes and a bit of lime zest. Coriander (cilantro in the US, I think) is a nice addition at the end, too.

It depends

I think technically decades go from years ending in 1 to years ending in 0, but you wouldn’t consider, say, the ‘90s to be from 1991-2000. So we’re in the ’10s, but not the 201st (202nd?) decade AD.

by saladdays on Feb 17, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

different ways to group years

techincally a “decade” is just a group of 10 years, so 83-92 could be a decade, and when we talk about the 80’s it is 80-89, but when refereing to things like “the 21st century” that techincally started with 2001 not 2000 since it is the 21st of something and the first set of 100 years was from 1-100. So 2001-2010 is the first decade in the 21st century, that doesn’t mean that 2000-2009 isn’t a decade in its own right

Ok, one of you english teachers out there tell us,

when did dropping the last comma (the one just before and, but, etc.) become “OK”. As jd points out here, way back when I was in grade school, that last comma was required. Now, it seems to be more a matter of choice and usually discouraged, if anything.

by ArkansasTravs on Feb 17, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

It's become "OK." in your first sentence. /haha

The serial comma is still required if you need it to avoid confusion. I always use the serial comma because it invariably makes the sentence clearer and I rarely, if ever, need to remove the last comma to save space (which is the reason why some, especially newspapers, started dropping it).

I've been wanting to get your point of view on a throwback jersey at a store here in town.

It’s a powder blue Willie McGee jersey, but it’s a Majestic. That being said, it has the yellow-eyed Cardinals and is historically accurate except for the hideous Majestic label on the sleeve, which, obviously, the real jerseys did not have. I can’t bring myself to pull the trigger because it isn’t Mitchell & Ness and has the Majestic label on the sleeve. What do you think?

Majestic throwbacks are pretty awful. But the price can be a big deal, too. If the Majestic throwback is $50-100, and you aren’t willing to pay $250-300, then get it.

For the Super Bowl, M&N ran a 50% off sale and I almost got a McCarver throwback. It would have only been $140.

Well, my dear man

you seem to have chosen my favourite band of the moment (Mumford & Sons) and one of my favourite Richard Thompson songs (Just the Motion) in your little melange of music, so I certainly salute you for that. Personally, I’m loving “Little Lion Man” from the Mumford’s first LP, although I am smitten with your choice also. Bizarrely, they often play Winter Winds in my gym (which is usually wall-to-wall Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, etc etc, the usual gym-y stuff, and pretty much never plays any folk-inflected indie pop, as far as I can recall) which is partly what got me into them.

Great record, anyhow. Reminds me of summer, as a lot of the best music seems to (I am really not a winter/cold weather person at all, and I’m a lot happier in the sunny months…).

it's unbelievable that wiki knows where the latest seat cushion night erupted

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seat_Cushion_Night

In fact, the sound explosion started with a lonely cushion clapping from a visiting Detroit Tigers’ fan in the first row of Section 132 (along the first base line). In a spirited effort to gain some advantage for the Tigers from an Indians loss, Shoppach’s pop drop prompted a solo seat cushion clap. A group of children in Section 132 joined in, and with Molina’s bunt, fans in surrounding sections took up the refrain. Within minutes the entire stadium had joined in a cacophony of deafening noise. The Cardinals responded to the super-thunderous applause, and the Indians were no match for the fans.

Since this moves us into 2005

How do you think the Cards would have faired against the White Sox? Every Sox fan I talk to said they would have beat anyone they faced in the series. I think the Cards would have had a good chance to win that series. Couldn’t have been worse than the Astros. It would have sucked to lose back to back series to teams that hadn’t won in a million years though.

"They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time."

by CardHawk on Feb 17, 2010 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

The Sox just had a really lucky year where everything clicked

nearly all their staff had career years, they got massive power totals out of guys like Konerko and Crede from what I recall, and had very few injuries, and did an Angels-esque job on their Pythag, too (i.e. they won more games than their runs for/against totals would suggest).

But, who knows – I guess what I’m saying is that they were probably a weaker team than your average WS winner, so maybe we’d have beaten them. We’ll never know.

He’s got a little speed, solid plate discipline, and plays a nice third base from what I hear. He doesn’t have any power to speak of, but I think he could rise quickly and be a very useful player.

I'm really not keen, in contrast

I think players like him in the low minors are dime-a-dozen, and the contact skills and BB% will wilt as he moves up the ladder and faces pitches who won’t be scared of his slap hitting. I don’t think he ever sees the majors.

I thought he was an 08 guy

I’ll reserve judgement, but I just don’t think no-power third basemen generally make it very far out of the low minors without adding some pop (which I guess could still happen) – even guys like Figgins had some power when they were low minors guys, and I don’t think Carpenter has that sort of speed…

RELEASE THE CENTIQUID!!!!

by Felonius_Monk on Feb 17, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Considering that our farm system has embraced the "promote as the bat dictates" mantra,

I could see him getting to AA this year. It’s not like there’s anyone in front of him of note. If he begins to hit, he’ll get promoted quickly. I agree with you on his age, but he could still be a productive player in AAA at age 26 or 27 and that’s not horrible in terms of depth in the farm system.

But seriously

Who gives up a hit to Mark friggin Loretta?

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Ryan Franklin is a decent-to-pretty-good middle reliever who was thrust into a closer's role...

which he then excelled at. He had a career year. Boffo for him and good for the Cards. The fact that we shouldn’t expect him to replicate that performance is not that big of a deal.

The fact that we don’t have one of the Riveras or Nathans is just scarcity at work. There simply aren’t 30 first-class closers out there; if there were, we could push Franklin back to the role he’s best suited for.

And in any event, if Boggs is consistently cranking it up to 97mph, I think he’ll be a part-time closer option by the end of the year.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Feb 17, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Basically in an auction draft you get x amount of dollars to draft your entire team. So who ever gets Pujols won’t have much left to buy the rest of their team.

In Mather’s case, certainly not until he proves his wrist is healthy again. In Craig’s case, certainly not until he proves he can hit big-league pitching. The most likely scenario resulting in Craig or Mather in RF fulltime is Ludwick getting hurt, missing significant time, one of them filling in and hitting, then the Cards not re-signing Ludwick in the offseason.

And hit like its 2008

Goddamn that is an awesome adjective. McGwized: to have Mark McGwire make you an awesome hitter, but not in the steroidy way.

I don’t think we’re going to get much for Ludwick alone, and that throw-in is always a heartbreaker. Also, mark my words… doom will come to us if we let Ludwick go before his time.

I mean, uh, Luddy is pretty good out there in right.

Let’s just hope that Mather isn’t the second coming of JW next year for the Phillies, because we released him in ST so that Felipe Lopez could fill the last roster spot.

3 in the top 100 is pretty impressive

I’m not sure I’d say Lynn is one of the top 100 prospects in baseball, but it’s gratifying nonetheless. Garcia in the top 50 seems a stretch, too.

In general, I’m sometimes kinda bemused by prospect rankings – Lance Lynn is commonly regarded as a better ‘spect than Freese; obviously age comes into this ranking, but most views on Lynn seem to suggest he’ll be quite likely to be an average starter, but unlikely to be much more, and he’s still got a little way to go. Freese, on the other hand, is probably pretty much an average major league 3B now. Age aside, I can’t really see the difference in how everybody views those two guys.

RELEASE THE CENTIQUID!!!!

by Felonius_Monk on Feb 17, 2010 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

With Freese we'll get his age 26-31 years

Assuming Lynn makes it to the show as a starter in 2011, we’ll get his 24-29 years. I don’t see a massive difference there, unless I’m wrong about ageing curves.

Is an average starting pitcher

I don’t know, but it’s an interesting question.

by SouthsideCardsFan on Feb 17, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Gah...Daryl Jones has fallen like a ROCK the last 18 months.

I think Miller is a bit overrated here. Garcia is probably about right. Lynn being top 100 surprised me considering his upside is a #3 or #4 starter.

Craig seems really low to me for a guy who has hit at every level, but this might be a function of not having a clear defensive position and being in his mid-20’s with not big league at bats.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Feb 17, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I'm with fourstick

I don’t know about Miller being that high. The thing is that he’s rather far away from The Show and is a little raw from what all the pre-draft stuff said. When ranking ‘spects I usually start by asking myself how close said player is from The Show, and the farther away the lower they can possibly be on the ladder. Obviously this is pretty subjective, hence the reason it’s not an accepted system by anyone but me and my 5 year old schnauzer. Miller has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the whole system, so obviously he’d get a good ranking were I to make one, but the sheer age and developmental distance between he and the majors is a significant concern.

Were I running this show, I’d but Garcia at #1, Lynn at #2, Craig at #3 and DJ Tools at #4. Five would be an interesting battle between Freese, Sanchez, and Anderson, and since they are all ranked in basically that range acc. to Scouting Book (4, 7, 6, respectively) I have no quarrel with that section of the list.

Interesting list there -

Walters was at #327, Ottavino was at #329, Boggs was at #338, and Oneli Perez checked in at #427 (still listed with the Padres).

Just for shits and giggles, Wallace was at #26, Clayton Mortenson was at #183 and Jess Todd was at #266. Shane Peterson did not make the top 434.

Someone said that he was the A's 9th best prospect

There isn’t a farm system that bad is there?

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

yesterday i commented that fangraphs had him at 9 on A’s prospects, and wondered if he’d make our top ten, and if not, does that mean anything, considering how lowly law ranked our system. (no idea where he ranked the A’s, though)

tbh I don’t think fangraphs knows that much about prospects. The Cards’ list was certainly kinda funky.

I don’t think Peterson would be in our top 10, although you could make a case for him around 9/10 I guess.

I feel like I need to defend the city. Myself, and most philly fans are disgusted by the fact that the actions of so few fans have such a horrible impact on the national view of Philadelphia fans. I’ve been going to Phils games my whole life and have always worn my cardinals gear and never had a bad experience. Select incidents like this tragic story, the laser pointer, the batteries thrown at JD Drew, or snowballs at santa dominate the impression of the city, rather than the passion, and brutal honesty that is born out of love from the blue collar fanbase. Sure philly fans are tough and rough around the edges, but they are not bad people and are passionate and knowledgeable fans.

Not sure if mentioned anywhere else..but Holliday says it wasn't really about the pies...

“It’s a natural assumption that for a Midwest native who puts family first, coming to St. Louis was a slam-dunk. Holliday insists, however, that because of the way his family works, he would have been happy signing anywhere. He didn’t feel any particular compulsion to play in the middle of the country or in a smaller city.

“It’s probably overblown a little bit,” he said. “I think I do a pretty good job of keeping my life simple. I try to come to the field and do my work and put in the time and the work, and then go out and play and do the best that I can. … Whether I play in a small market, medium market or a big market, that would be the way I go about my everyday business.” "

the problem is that his rate stats will be colored by Coors field (as they should be)

I’m not arguing that Helton shouldn’t be in the HOF. The first guy asked what numbers he’ll need to get in. IMO, he needs 3000 hits, especially to knock the Coors Field stank off of him.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Feb 17, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Lifetime .328 hitter

That really ought to be enough. He’d have to mortally suck the rest of his career to knock his lifetime BA down below .320. There are, like 3 players with a lifetime average of .320 that AREN’T in the HOF and two of them aren’t even eligible (Ichiro because he’s still playing and Shoeless Joe Jackson).

You’re crazy if you think he isn’t getting in.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Feb 17, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

OK, I'll play

First off, there are 11 non-active guys with > 1000 ABs with a .320 or better BA who aren’t in the HOF:

Shoeless Joe Jackson .355 (ineligible)
Lefty O’Doul .349
Dave Orr .342
Pete Browning .341
Jake Stenzel .337
Riggs Stephenson .336
Mike Donlin .332
Bill Lange .329
Tip O’Neill .326
Bob Fothergill .325
Babe Herman .324

O’Doul isn’t a good comp, as he played a very short career (3000ish ABs), although he did finish 2nd in the MVP voting once and 3rd another time. Orr, Stenzel, and Lange weren’t eligible, as neither garnered 10 years of service time. Fothergill and O’Neill played less that Helton, as they were part time players for sizable portions of their already short (in years) ML careers. That still leaves 6 pretty good comps who aren’t in the HOF. O’Doul, Browning and Herman in particular are pretty solid comps for Helton.

Add in that Coors inflates Batting Average (by 12% in 2009, and I think it’s safe to assume that it was no lower during the pre-humidor years), and I think that you have a pretty solid case to keep Helton out of the HOF. He had no real defensive value to speak of. Sure, he won three Gold Gloves, but that’s no biggie at 1B.

He wouldn’t be the worst HOFer to get in, but he’s nowhere near a no-brainer.

by SouthsideCardsFan on Feb 17, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, proofread much?

EDIT:
5 pretty good comps, 2 of whom are really good (i.e. Browning and Herman)

by SouthsideCardsFan on Feb 17, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

They're solid comps?

Are you kidding? Most of them played their entire career before the turn of the century. Browning played from 1882-1894, so I don’t see how he is a “good comp” to Todd Helton. I surely don’t have to remind you that league batting averages from 1880-1899 topped .290 an astonishing number of times. That hasn’t happened, in either league, since Todd Helton began his career. In fact, no league has come within 10 points of .290 since his career started, and pitchers don’t even HIT in the American League. Batting averages were inflated back then.

Browning won two batting titles, 1890 in the Players League, and 1885 in the American Association. In 1890, in a league with exactly 140 total players, 19 of them hit better than .300 — 13.6%. That may not seem like a lot, but compare it to 2009, when 41 players hit .300 out of 1266 total players in both leagues combined. That’s 3%. So you were four times more likely to hit .300 in 1890 as you were in 2009. Still think he’s a good comparison? I sure don’t.

Babe Herman is a better one, but his 5 year peak doesn’t hold up to Helton’s, and he played in a juiced ball era from 1926 to 1934 and hit only 181 career homers. Helton has 325 homers now and will probably finish his career with 370-400 homers if he plays another 3-4 seasons, barring injuries.

Helton also has 509 career doubles, will easily reach 600, and has a legit shot at 700 if he plays until he’s 39 or 40, even with an aging curve. Do you know how many non HOF players there are with 600 doubles? Two — Barry Bonds and Pete Rose. Neither are eligible, but both would be shoo-in HOF players were it not for other issues. Only four players in the history of the GAME have 700 doubles: Musial, Speaker, Cobb, and Rose. Pretty select company, don’t you think?

by SouthsideCardsFan on Feb 17, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Take away Coors Field

and you also might have Johnny Mize, who is a legit HOF player.

The difference between Clark and players like Mize and Helton is their five year peaks and their consistent play after that. Clark was great for about 3-4 seasons and then wasn’t the same hitter after that. Mize and Helton were great for 5-7 years and then consistently above average for most of the rest of their careers.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Feb 17, 2010 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

You're right about having to discount his numbers

Because to call Helton like Mize without discounting the OVER 10% in BA because of Coors effect is silly, but the fact that he’s the face of the Rocks, and he’s probably first ballot, although he’s borderline at best. 3,000 makes him first ballot, but again, he plays anywhere but Colorado, and we’re probably looking at him as an above average player with some good peak years but not ridiculous slash stats. The huge drop in Home/Away OPS IMHO makes him borderline at best, but I like him and hope he gets in because of what he means as the Rocks first franchise player (if you don’t count Larry Walker).

So somehow we can figure out which of these guys used based on rumors? I subscribe to the we can’t know who used (other than those who have admitted it) so they either all go in or all stay out. I don’t like thinking that so and so didn’t use because no one thinks of him as a potential user. plus his peak is diminished given the timing of it (steroid era)

I hope Helton gets in and I think if Todd Helton has four or so more good years (high avg, hgih OPS, lots of hits), he’ll be in. If he drops off a cliff at age 36-37, which is a possibility, I think he’ll have trouble getting in. I don’t see Will Clark. Larry Walker, or even Fred McGriff getting into the Hall, so we’ll see what happens .

by Willie McGee's Twin on Feb 17, 2010 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Their career batting averages don't stack up to Helton's though.

Thru age 35:

  • Helton: .328
  • Clark: .302
  • Walker: .317
  • McGriff: .287

None of them except Helton have 500+ doubles. Only McGriff will end up with more homers and all are short of 500 dingers. If Helton is able to keep his BA above .321, that will put him in the top 50 all time. That, with ~400 homers and 600+ doubles surely ought to be enough to get him elected.

Larry Walker pre Coors field BA: .281

I get what you're saying

But Olympic Stadium in Montreal when Walker played there suppressed offensive numbers. Not as much as Coors may have inflated them, but it’s still worth noting.

I think Larry Walker is a borderline HOF player by WAR, so it really doesn’t diminish Helton to compare the two. If you want to diminish him, use Big Cat, or, if you’re really medieval, Dante Bichette!

it probably inflates doubles and batting average more than home runs. It has huge power alleys and the thin air allows the ball to get into them quicker. Also, outfielders have to play deeper because of those huge alleys allowing more base hits to fall in front of them.

Todd Helton is Don Mattingly without the back injury. Mattingly started having back problems in 1988 at the age of 27. You can clearly see his rapid decline — if he puts up numbers similar to Helton the rest of his career, he’s a shoo-in for the HOF.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

Anxious to see what our pitching staff looks like

It’s cool that we’re one of the NL’s prohibitive favorites for the first time in a few years, but like everyone else, I am really worried about the pitching. And not even necessarily the 5th spot in the rotation. It’s the bullpen I’m wondering about.

Opening Day this year vs the Reds will be on ESPN.

I plan on attending the game, assuming I can still get non-nosebleed tickets when they go on sale February 27th. Hopefully I get them.

But what I’m going to vent about is the game broadcast.

I live in Ohio but on the OTHER side of Ohio away from Cincy.
I get FSN Ohio, but I don’t get the FSN Ohio feed anymore that shows Reds game (this started last season).
I get the MLB Extra Innings package and am NOT blacked out for the Reds games, so I can still get the games that way.

But I AM blacked out for Reds games on ESPN. Last Opening Day, their game was blacked out and I got ESPNews for 3 hours. How does that make ANY sense? How am I not in their ‘market’ for the MLB package but am for ESPN. And for that matter, why are their blackouts on nationally broadcasted games anyways?

With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

I'll give you cabrera

But peralta is a third baseman now,so with his hitting and defense he’s probably league average now. Valbuena/Laporta/Santana all have potential , but they still need to adjust to the major league level.Masterson would be better in the pen. Laffey I have no clue about, but he looks alot like a league average pitcher.
So why waste money to compete when it would most likely take ABs/innings from rookies who could use the experience when it’s obvious they’re not going to win the division?

I am the Batman .

I NEVER said they should get Branyan!

I was impressed with Masterson as a starter last year. he had some rough starts but he also had some good ones.
I think you are underestimating their young players. And I think this s just because you aren’t very familiar with them. I am also probably slightly overestimating them.
I also realized that they only won 65 games last year (how I still watched I don’t know) but I still think they can make it to .500 this year. And at this point we are arguing about 6 wins in a completely different division than the Cardinals and about a team that we both agree is a long shot to make the playoffs.

If they can add maybe two solid starters, they've got a shot

and given that there are several decent starters wasting away on the FA market who’d probably sign for the sort of money Branyan might make, I don’t think it’s a bad one-year risk, plus it gives some of the AAA guys another year to learn their craft.

If they’ve got, say, $5-10m left to spend I’d definitely sign Washburn, although tbh I’d have been looking to add one more risk/reward-type guy; Wang would’ve been a good fit in that regard.

Also

if it doesn’t work out, you can trade guys like Peralta and maybe Westbrook sometime near the deadline for prospects. I don’t see any need to blow up the team now, because there’s not a lot of high-paid veteran types who would bring back much in a trade, and they have some young talent.

They’re in a similar spot to, say, the A’s – unlikely to be a contender, but with enough young players at the mlb level (and a few million to spend) such that they might as well take a shot at signing some FAs to compete this year, in what looks a weak division.

If he actually has a good first half Peralta is a great trade piece.

The Indians have at least one other person who can play third in Marte. I’m hesitant to put a bunch of confidence in Marte but if they need a good trade piece we at least have someone to take over.
And I don’t think the Indians actually have that much money. That’s partly why they made the Martinez trade.

I really don't think this division is as wide open as Cody seems to think it is.

The White Sox should be good but continually disappoint and make strange decisions like having Vizquel DH. I just never know what to expect from them.

i'll take the twins handily

sox have a good rotation, but the d looks awful suspect – can carlos quentin play right? i guess it sounds like they might get damon now, but that does nothing for the d. and i don’t like their offense either, especially compared to minny.

Quentin has put up good defensive numbers in RF before, so there's that

Pierre and Rios are going to be at least average on the field.
The infield’s defense is a mystery to me, but Ramirez, Konerko and Beckham I’m going to say are average defensively.
Teahan is going to be a hole though.

Any Wheel of Time fans out?

Kind of curious as to what ya’ll thought of Sanderson as opposed to Jordan. After reading the series through again, I didn’t seem to notice anything different other than most of the side-plots in the book get solved by the end of the book.

RAID0 question

if i wanted to setup a couple of disks in/as (i don’t really know the proper way to phrase it) how much harder is it to do if i’m adding a second disk at a later date? would it require a format and a reinstall of the OS or can i add drives as i go with little more work than if i were to install all the drives at the time of the initial build?

i suppose it’s always possible to not RAID the drives and just have the 2 separate disks, but i like the idea of having one contiguous 1.5TB disk or whatever better than one .5TB and one 1TB

I've just had a really cool idea for a film

what about, if there was a country that had no snow and ice, but was good at lots of other sports, and you had some guys there who weren’t good enough to do a sport, but then they totally just went and DID A SPORT ON ICE, and it’d be really different and wacky and kinda, “Yo?!”

Then you could have them go compete, at the winter olympics. Maybe you could introduce some arryan bad-guy team from Switzerland or something to be antagonists, trying to thwart our plucky heroes at every turn. I dunno how it’d finish but there’d probably be some uplifting moral about personal achievement and sticking with your buddies and stuff, and there’d be a gangbang.

I would call it “Australian Speed Skating Movie”.

COOL RUNNINGS!

Saddest thing about this Olympics: Jamaican bobsledding didn’t make it. They should just be in if you ask me.

So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

you're in control of yourself, though

even wiping out – much unlike those luge and skeleton things, which i would never attempt (except on a kiddie course)

Yeah like I said before...

I’ve never gotten luge… at least skeleton I get that you have a death wish… the balls first of the luge means you just want to have a miserable rest of your life.

so RB Silver Sun Pickups

Most I have heard compare them with Smashing Pumpkins, I hear more Sonic Youth what do you think?

I don't get the Pumpkins much at all from SSP.

I can definitely see some Washing Machine era Sonic Youth, with the fuzzy construction and all. Personally, I hear a lot of the navel-gazing early 90s Manchester bands. Maybe something along the lines of Ride, but with a bit more pep. Not extreme enough with the craziness to really compare them to My Bloody Valentine.

Their riffs are what has the SY comp in my mind

I guess the Corgan thing is going to come up with the vocal similarities, What is your take on I Fight Dragons?

Honestly, I'm only familiar with the one EP.

If they have more material out there, I’m not aware of it. What little I’ve heard, though, I’m not a huge fan of. I’ve heard very similar material with other groups I felt executed more effectively. They’re a little too, um, I don’t know, forced and shiny, if that makes sense. I would have to give them more of a listen to make sure I’m not really missing the boat here, but so far I’m not going gaga for them.

I think their hook

is the use of original NES controllers in their music including the 8-bit sound card
