The Nephilim Are On The Earth in These Days: Cliff Lee and a Chat Thread

So the big news of the past few days is, of course, Cliff Lee spurning the hated East Coast superpower Yankees' offers of riches beyond counting to accept the hated East Coast superpower Phillies' offer of slightly less -- though still not easily countable -- riches. For my part, I suppose it's at least interesting to see a player finally go somewhere other than New York or Boston, but that's rather cold comfort when contemplating seeing Philadelphia six times in the regular season. Or, worse yet, in a playoff series. Oh, well. I suppose the Cardinals would have to actually make the playoffs before that becomes a concern, and I'm not at all confident in their ability to do that. So, cart before the horse and all that.

I haven't done a chat in what seems like forever; my schedule has simply been too full this autumn and early winter to allow it. This afternoon, however, I find myself with a couple free hours, so rather than hammer away at the keys, trying to draw sense from the resultant mass, I'm just going to sit here with my laptop and let you all generate the content for me. How does it feel being used? Ha ha! And just look how little I care!

Anyway, unpleasantness aside, I'll be here until about three-ish. Topics can include, well, pretty much whatever. You've seen how these things work before. So ask away, and I'll do my very best to dance at the end of your string.

Hey, RB

You said that you’re not confident in this club’s ability to make the playoffs. Why is that? I’m not sure I necessarily disagree with such an assessment, but I’m curious on the specifics of your reasoning behind that conclusion.

by dronemc on Dec 15, 2010 2:21 PM EST reply actions

Because,

as much as I believe the Reds are in for some regression, and the Cardinals should be in for a positive bump, I look at this team and I still see a gaping hole of suck in the middle infield, a rotation with Chris Carpenter in his mid-30s and Jaime Garcia coming off an enormous innings jump, and an aging Lance Berkman playing in the outfield every day. If things go right for this team they should be quite good, but there’s a whoooollllle lot of pitfalls out there that could take them down, I believe.

Also, I’m just discouraged at the moment by the direction (or lack thereof), that I see things going, so there’s a bit of negativity running through my current team coverage.

Maybe I'm wrong.....

But I don’t see Berkman playing everyday. We have both Jay and Craig, and who knows what other AAA flavor of the year, that will be able to start some games in order to keep him healthy.

There is a lot of wiggle room

Between every day player, and part time player.

And in the games he starts, he’ll likely be a canidate for a defensive replacement late in games, saving him “some” innings of wear and tear.

I do to.....

it means he is SUPER healthy, and hitting the ball really well.

Only problem with that is, we only had two players that even played in 150+ games last year, let alone started that many.

Given Berkman’s age, I just don’t see that possible. He’ll need a little time off. I’d be ecstatic with 125 starts, and probably pretty happy with 110-115.

by Stanley1 on Dec 15, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

He played in 122 games last year when he was injured, traded, and underperforming,

so I’d say 125 games/500 PAs is the bare minimum of what I’ll be satisfied with.

He could be replaced in the late innings, yes.

However, how many times do you think he’ll be taken out if there’s a chance his last at-bat could affect the outcome of the game? Sure, it it’s out of reach one way or the other he’ll come out, but in close games? Hard to pull a guy with his track record when you know the game could come down to one pitch in the top of the eighth.

I remember going to a 20-some odd inning game back with my little league team in the 80's.

I think it was Tom Brunansky and, by virtue of the late innings, Jose DeLeon in the two corner OF spots. They switched positions BATTER BY BATTER, in what I guess was an attempt to account for the LH or RH-ness of particular batters.

Pray that TLR never, ever sees footage of that game.

The Cardinals did not spend eight million dollars on a bench player. I’m not saying they don’t have enough depth to give him time off, I’m just not confident in our manager’s ability to not put a guy he loves so very, very much in the lineup each and every day.

this is exactly how I feel

I’ll probably read a statement like the one I am about ready to make, a bit on down in the comments, but here goes:

I am actually to the point where I hope this team does not sign Albert Pujols to an extension. One year ago I would have never made this kind of comment, but I really do believe it is in the best interest of the team going forward. So I hope they don’t sign APu, the team gets off to a hot start, and they ride Albert’s greatest season into a World Series Championship. Or if they fade like usual, I hope they trade him for at least one great prospect, and at least a couple really good ones.

I think if Albert is traded, this will be Tony’s last season with the team, and if he is gone, this organisation might have a sense of direction that they can stick to.

All I've got is a broken heart, memories & dreams that I can't drink away

by gdm426 on Dec 15, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

there's still the wildcard of payroll though

I don’t think we can have a $100 million payroll, sign Albert, and not significantly endanger the long-term prospects of this team

Bump payroll to 110-120, though, and maybe we can. So it really all depends on where payroll goes.

Btw, I think you have to lock Albert up. Regardless of how you feel now, you WILL be regretting it when he goes into the Hall of Fame as maybe one of best 5 players ever, and not in a Birds uniform. Maybe we will suck for a few years at the tail end of the contract. Small price to pay imo to be able to tell people that you watched that great of a player 162 times a year.

Hey, RB good to have you back . . .

I share your tepid enthusiasm for the Cards’ outlook. Each of the starting pitchers has had significant injury down time in his career. Unrealistic not to expect DL for one if not several of them this year. Then it’s PJ to the unrescue and whatever Maroth-like creature Mo can scrape off the bottom of someone’s cleats.

At third it’s injured and brittle, at short it’s someone who should play second, at second it’s an outfielder who should not play at all, at first it’s the Mang and his uncontract. In center it’s someone who has at least twice wanted a trade and somewhere else it’s the Puma at dusk. Does not fill me with hope other than to hope that I am wrong. . .

I'm part excited for next year and partly going WTF is going on

more of the latter after the boog trade. I must say though, that a lineup with Pujols, Holliday, and Berkman is potentially extremely ridiculous.

but there are tons of question marks about the team yet again. I could see the bullpen going either way (although I think it will actually be a strength as long as Franklin remains effective). The starting pitching is formidable, but this is the era of the pitcher to some extent; and you have a lot of teams with formidable pitching staffs these days. as for the hitting, if it’s not better next year we will be screwed, since we downgraded so much on defense. this could be alleviated by giving schumaker a short leash. perhaps t. greene would be a better option.

I think John Mozeliak has one of the toughest jobs in baseball.

The problem is this: ownership has made it clear La Russa stays as long as he wants. Ergo, there’s absolutely nothing you can do to him. Trying to force moves on Tony he doesn’t like only results in a pissing match the GM can’t possibly win. I hate hate hate lots of the moves Mozeliak has made, but I also feel (just from personal experience observing and interacting with him), that he’s working with at least one hand tied behind his back in terms of trying to shape a roster.

I was reading Lookout Landing’s story about Ryan’s bat not being anything special.. or indeed anything at all. It can be hard to appreciate a good defensive, even when you know that empirically he IS a good player overall, when his bat is so woeful.

I don't think Ryan is getting

a fair shake yet offensively here. Most of the -Ryan seems to be because his bat sucked this year.
What about last year…the only other year here that’s close to being comparable? He was better than suck and everybody was thinking he’s a keeper. Nobody was complaining about his stick.
This year he and Shu both sucked with the stick and Ryan is now a bum? Ryan was worth more in the field than Ship and Vise versa at the plate. But Ryan was MUCH better in the field than Skip. So Ryan’s a bum?

Works sometimes - Roger Maris, Ceasar Cedeno, Will Clark, sort of with Larry Walker

I kind of feel like Albert is going to want that mega-contract commensurate with his status as the best in the game, in which case the Cardinals really can’t afford to sign him. Semper fidelis tyrannosaurus!

if AP really does want that mega-contract, would it be worth it to give him the total amount he wants (say $280 mm) over a longer time (say ten years), or better to give him the same total amount over less years (something like 280/8)? on the one hand, you may be paying a lot of money to a player that is too old, but on the other hand, the more money you shell out per year, the more it cripples the team.

i suppose all this is assuming no deferment.

by alberich on Dec 15, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Look

1. You’re willing to pay AP $35M/yr for 8 years.

2. If you write a contract for $28M/yr for 10 years, you bank $7M every year for 8 years, paying AP the rest. At the end of 8 years, you release him and pay him for the next two years out of the $56M you’ve banked

3. Profit! You get to KEEP the accumulated interest.

The Mang does more than Milton can

by alberich on Dec 15, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

If AP were offered those choices. . .

You present an unlikely choice.

by SouthsideCardsFan on Dec 15, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

The question was:

“Would it be worth it to give him the total amount he wants (say $280 mm) over a longer time (say ten years), or better to give him the same total amount over less years (something like 280/8)?” (IHB)

The answer proposed was “Higher AAV, shorter years” so as not to cripple the team at the end of the contract. (RB)

My response was to point out that the longer contract did not cripple the team, but on the contrary benefited it.

So from the team’s point of view (not, as you correctly oberve, AP’s) the longer contract is superior.

The Mang does more than Milton can

by alberich on Dec 15, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

it's basic time value of money

8 years at 35M/yr is worth $236M in present-year dollars, while 10 years at 28M/yr is worth $227M i present year dollars. Even though they both sum to 280M, the 10 year deal “saves” the team about $9M over the length of the contract.

alright then i stand by my previously unannounced viewpoint that the cardinals should worry more about the total and less about the years.

if what AP wants is a huge TOTAL amount, then they can give him that over the course of more years to ultimately save money for the team.

OTOH, if what AP wants is to be making a ridiculous amount of money PER YEAR, then we are screwed. but if its only that total amount that concerns him, i think we could actually pull that off.

I suspect he probably wants a contract with ARod AAV or slightly more

So one way to get there would be to defer a bunch of money. So in the papers it will be reported that Albert is getting 28 mil per year when in reality he will be getting something like $23 mil plus some payments far off in the future.

Now that one I'll say yes to.

The Utley/Holliday one is the only matchup in favour of the Phightin’s, and looking strictly from an offensive standpoint it’s pretty much a wash. (Taking out the positional aspect.) However, the Phillies’ margin players are significantly stronger. We don’t have a Victorino to add to that list, nor a Domonic Brown. (Who I’m very high on.)

Their offense suffered from the same malaise ours did last year.

Their problems were just not as prolonged over the course of the season. In a short series, anybodys’ bats can go dry at the wrong time. I’d think the Cards wouldn’t be automatically counted out of any potential playoff pairing against the Phils.

Let me clarify right now before someone jumps down my throat.

By “suffered the same malaise” I meant their had a stretch where their offense just shut down for a stretch of about 15 games – Hallady lost a few in a row something like 1-0. I’m well aware they scored the second most runs in the NL last season.

I think they'll give third an open competition situation.

Remember, we saw Descalso playing over there last season, even though he isn’t well suited for it, and the manager was impressed. Greene can play third, and Craig will obviously get first crack. If there’s a veteran pickup it’ll be more of the MI/utility role, and any significant time at third will probably go to one of the young guys. Hopefully, anyway. I think that would be a really good use of available resources.

i take it to class, study room, library, etc. occasionally (maybe 4-5 times a month), but it does basically stay in one place. i’ve had two chargers break (got stripped, but that was my fault) and i had to replace the keyboard (again, my fault), but seriously nothing other than that.

I'm pretty mobile with mine. I take it to class almost every day

but I’m very careful with it and hibernate it before every transport unlike noobs who let their HD spin as they throw it in their backpack.
My only “problem” is the speakers freaked out on two separate occasions and wouldn’t stop making this incessant clicking noise, regardless of volume control, unless i shut the machine down.

Almost all computer speakers suck.

I admit I’m an horrible snob when it comes to audio anything, but it’s just the nature of laptop design. The Beats Audio units from HP are a little better, but the midrange is still virtually nonexistent. Asus has a new laptop coming out I’m very, very interested to hear, designed by the same guy who does a lot of work for Bang and Olufsen.

Truthfully, it runs that awful windows OS that made me buy a mac (vista? was that it?) so that may have been the issue. But once I bought the mac, I gave the presario to my wife — who does the least amount of “advanced” computing processes ever — and she can not stand it. Bradford, based solely on the age.

In fact, I’m not sure there’s a quarterback in the league I would take over Bradford right now, to be honest. His combination of poise, upside, and youth is tough to beat. Get him a more productive receiving corps (a healthy Hoomanawanui would help in that regard, as well as a DX not still in the kid glove phase), and he should be one of the top QBs in the league as early as next year, I would think.

True.

Both are strong choices, but I like Bradford’s accuracy deep more than Ryan, and Flacco looks brilliant now but watching him I just get the feeling he’s always going to be prone to bouts of inconsistency.

It would be a toss up for me between Bradford and Matt Ryan. That’s hard to say as a Sooner fan who knows Sam. Ryan is 2 years older than Bradford (same age as Flacco) but I’d definitely take him over Flacco. I share the opinion that Flacco is going to struggle with inconsistency his whole career.

I don't think I've seen you weigh in on the Boog situation much RB

do you think it was:

A) a failure in the org to recognize talent and run prevention (considering the groundball pitching staff I kind of see this as being probably not an option unless they are just dumb)

B) there were some players that have a lot of clout that wanted Brendan gone

C) they have thrown defense out the window and want the most offensive upside possible

D) Larussa requested him off the team

E) he was actually so distracting people were losing their minds, he had to go, no one liked him

I'm going to say

A, B, and D, with a little of C thrown in. Seriously, if you looked at the stats, you would expect Boog to be far below replacement level with the bat. Granted, 2010 is probably the floor, if just because major league baseball players don’t give such black holes of offense playing time no matter how good their defense.

To me it’s like black and white. Boog’s upside is being slightly undervalued, I believe. Maybe this isn’t the right team for him but on my team he starts at ss, especially with the pitching staff we have. Waino came close to winning 2 Cy Young’s with Ryan mostly at SS. He WON despite what Ryan contributed offensively for him. If I’m a pitcher I want Ryan behind me and I’d let the rest of the team know that it’s up to them to score for me. If Ryan just happen to drive in the game winner I’d rib the rest of them.

I will not be used for original content

So I let a unicorn pick hard hitting questions for me to ask you.

Who is the team to beat in the NL Central? Did Cincinnati overachieve or should be expect another tight race this season?

Looking over the current 40 man roster and seeing some unfamiliar names could you give us some insight into which minor leaguers should be most impressive this spring?

Considering the way Tyler Greene struggled on defense last season, why do the Cardinals hold him in such high esteem? His offense wasn’t anything to brag about either… though he was slightly better than Ryan in this area.

Are there any prospects in the Cards system who could have immediate and notable impact for next year? Any Jaime Garcias out there?

I still am not sold on having Theriot play SS. Though the “cybermetric” folks say that he plays average defense at SS, his range and arm strength are far below Brendon Ryan’s. It sure doesn’t seem that the team got a fair return for Ryan when they traded him for a high A pitcher who can throw hard but walks almost as many as he strikes out. In your opinion, does this pitcher display real potential as a major league closer in 2 years or did the Cardinals basically unload Ryan for peanuts?!?

In the most recent issue of the Cardinals Gameday magazine, there is a photo of Skip Schumaker talking to a reporter, who I believe is you, and visible on his left bicep is a tattoo of a large shamrock with the name FITZ written on it. Do you know the story of this tattoo?

I can respect your stance.

Cardinals are the team to beat right now, I think. Cincy is in for a fair amount of regression, and with just ordinary run distribution (I know, we can argue there were causes all day long, etc., but in a general sense), the Cards should gain a few wins at least with the exact same performance. I would peg the Cards at ~88 wins right now and Cincy at ~85.

I won’t answer the second one because I’m going to do my annual Spring Surprises post sometime in January and don’t want to give away my thoughts now.

Too small a sample size to judge anything on defense yet with Tyler. His scouting reports have always been good, and that’s much more useful when you’re dealing with such a dearth of actual data here. Plus, I feel he pressed, badly, at the major league level; understandable considering he was looking over his shoulder constantly. Also, I would argue that, taking into account how much he’s been shuttled around the past couple seasons, the Cardinals don’t hold him quite so high esteem as the questioner believes.

The impact prospects in 2011 are likely to all be relievers, if anything. Allen Craig could breakout with the bat, but I would put my money on a guy like Eduardo Sanchez having an impact.

One, anyone using the term cybermetric doesn’t deserve to have any questions answered and should be beaten mercilessly. That being said, I think they got as good a return for Ryan as could possibly have been expected given his struggles and the personality conflict between he and certain unnamed entities. Now, whether his value was higher with the Cardinals or in a trade is a different matter altogether, but that’s not what was asked. As for Cleto himself, the stuff is good enough he could certainly make it to the majors and be a useful reliever. Closer? Meh. I don’t know he has the control.

And I don’t know anything about any Fitz tattoos. Good rootbeer, but not good enough to put it on my arm.

You might appreciate this.

I went to a Free Energy show a couple weeks back. It was a lot of fun. But, their lead singer had a 1987 Minnesota Twins t-shirt on. Most of you know that I really, really dislike the Giants and Twins because, as a child, that was the first year my parents allowed me to stay up and watch the playoff games in their entirety. So I start yelling out the names of members of the 1987 Minnesota Twins. Little did I know that the band is actually from Minnesota, so the lead singer joins in, and then says, “But we could do this all night. How about another song?” And they played a song. All in all, one of my better concert interactions with a band mid-show.

that is very possible, but listen to the interview

Bubbles says he took his job seriously & he tried really hard. it’s just when he goofed off & tried to have fun the no fun police in the clubhouse got all butt hurt over it & they ran him out of town. not TLR or MO. also listen to this one, the host explains he’s been told by the players it wasn’t TLR who got rid of Boog, it was the players. you’ll have to fast forward a few minutes to get the part where he’s talking about what he’s been told.

waah waah waaaaah

let’s not read all the publicly available information, then call everyone else biased and delusional. I’ve heard this one before. who’s cooking up a narrative, again?

there’s more info — including piles and piles of direct quotes from multiple sources — from the past two years and change on Ryan than the average player. it probably takes about 20 minutes reading time; the only reason it takes longer is it’s scattered around and archived. it would be nice if someone refuted it with something other than “you’re just making that up, you freaks.”

that’s funny you should say that he treated fans right. that’s the exact opposite of what i’ve been told by some folks in the media & who used to work for the indians. heck that article said he wasn’t that great to fans. of course it could just be a generation gap thing.

I run autograph sessions for MLB during the All Star Game Fan Fest.

He was always great with the kids and true baseball fans……but whenever a money driven collector would ask him for numerous ones or try to take advantage of him, he’d give him a good piece of his mind.

i was told he hated doing singings where people paid for stuff. i guess it makes sense then he got mad at folks there. when i saw him at the Jake once i was going to ask for an autograph, but my buddy who worked for the indians told me not too because i was in my 20’s & he wouldn’t give autographs to guys in their 20’s.

Oh probably did.

But FanFest was more family oriented and not just about autographs. So instead of 100% of the people being collectors it was more 60-70% families, 20% casual fans, and 10% money seekers.

Plus it was the All Star Game FanFest…..it’s basically MLB’s version of a convention/state fair/expo/giant inside game.

my long time favorite car is a Firebird, of course they don't make them any more

which breaks my heart. i’ve always wanted one & never been able to get one. i cried in 02 when the last one came off the line because i knew my dream of ordering a new one was officially dead. i was always a GM guy because of the Firebird & Corvette. but i’m also partial to Mopar’s because that’s primarily who my dad & grandpa worked for. i love the Dodge Challenger & Charger. i love Cadillac, Audi, Lamborghini, but my favorite company has to be Mercedes-Benz. there is nothing they don’t make & make well. they have daily drivers, SUV’s & muscle cars. and they are all fantastic. they really are the best company right now & have been for a while.

And Blanton and Oswalt will be up after 2012, so maybe this is just designed to keep payroll about even. Plus I doubt the front office sees the Howard contract as that burdensome. We’re not that far from the actual signing of it, and I doubt they’ve wisened up.

Am I wrong to question the Cards philosophy of “competing to win the division”
when its pretty clean year after year we are one of the worst division.

What happened to hoping for excellence?

I know its not my money so its easy to say
but this team doesnt say “we want to be the best team in baseball, we want to win the world series”
its “we want to compete to win the division”

Is it just another version of the “one game at a time cliche?”
LIke thinking about the world series is something you should think of AFTER winning your division first

or do they really think being as good as cinci is all that they need?

I never understood that
like if a business went out and said, we want to be better than average but we arnt going to strive for the best
I dont know if that would cut it

I thought winning would be enticing and exciting, like the small of your first girlfriend’s back. Sure, it’s something so ordinary it shouldn’t make an impact at all, but it’s also different somehow. There’s something impossibly seductive about that smoothness that stays with you forever. I thought building a winner would be a little like that, smooth and delicious and secret and electric.

Do anything that you've really wanted to do, but have always been busy or bothered by people

For me it would be waking up early in the morning, having a nice small breakfast. Then setting up the speakers in my room and spend basically the next 4 hours smoking in my room, doing a little bit every 10 minutes to try to get a perfect high while listening to great music really loudly.

Then when I start to come down, I do some activities that I otherwise would be too lazy to do. Like yoga or art or something. Then when I get bored with that, I would go to the store and get some ingredients to make the perfect burger – make it then watch some Simpsons.

So last night I stayed up all night studying for my final today

My final was at 1pm so I set my alarm for 11:30 just in case I dozed off. I was laying around zing through comments, looked at the clock…11:23. Ok, I’ve got a few minutes before I have to start getting ready to leave.
Next thing I know I wake up and it’s 1pm!
I can’t believe it. I fell asleep with less than 7 minutes before i was supposed to start getting ready and my alarm didn’t go off.
I couldn’t believe it. I was so pissed and in shock really about what was happening.

So the only thing I can think to do is email my prof explaining what happened and beg him to let me take the exam later.
Luckily he’s a really nice guy and let me come in tonight and take my exam with no penalty.

Waking up at 1pm after staying up all night studying was probably the worst feeling I’ve had in my life. Glad it’s over. What a crazy day.

i used to stress out about finals in high school, i am terrible at taking tests

i can know the material frontwards, backwards & sideways but come time to sit down & take the test i just go blank. i tried everything to fix it, i pulled all nighters, i did meditation, but nothing helped. then my senior year i pulled a all nighter for the winter final & actually fell asleep sitting up at the table. i woke up & said screw it & didn’t study anymore. it was the first time in a long time i got a good grade on a test. from that moment on i didn’t study & got pretty good grades from there on out. if i had figured that out 4 years earlier, i would have gone to college & done something with my life.

So I had a dream the other night

That was so trippy that I’m writing a short story about it.

So the dream starts out with me and a friend breaking into an abandoned church on a beautiful summer afternoon, and have a very nice time. We play some games, he pulls out a bottle of whiskey, we get a little buzzed, chill in the nice summer afternoon having a good time. It gets dark, and we hear sirens – thinking that someone called the cops because we had broken into the church we scram.

Then I wake up from that dream, but I’m still dreaming (inception!). When I wake up from the first dream the entire mood changes. I get a text message from the kid I was with in the church saying “i’m sorry dude, I showed them your picture”. Confused I log onto VEB, and gdm starts yelling at me accusing me of doing all of these incredibly terrible things (think murder and child rape).

The cops come and talk to me later, and they accuse me of all of those same things. They say that I was with my friend in the church for a week and we used it as a veritable torture house, killing and raping and torturing people. I get accosted by some of the victims, and all of that terrible stuff.

So I’m there in my dream thinking that I actually committed all of those crimes, because I had already woken up from my previous dream in that dream. The effect was so powerful that when I woke up for real in a cold sweat, I still believed that I had done all of those terrible things. Then I took a piss and I was fine.

I know I'm late to comment on this, but since I got pregnant I've been having very vivid dreams.

Some of them have been night terrors. Josh said I screamed out “MOM!” in my sleep one night.

I’ve had lots of zombie nightmares. In one of them, I was babysitting three little boys who somehow got infected. In another dream I was living with Josh in a big farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. A wave of zombies found us. I scrambled to the third story of the house, and eventually up onto the roof. I was clinging to the weather vane in the noon sun thinking that if the zombies didn’t get me I was surely going to get sun poisoning.

The other night, I had a dream a woman was trying to punch me in the uterus. I found a Jeep and started driving away, but like a bad horror movie, she somehow clung to the Jeep. No matter how crazy I drove, I couldn’t shake her. Finally, I started intentionally hitting things. I ran her head into mailboxes, signposts and walls until it exploded.

GOOD TIMES.
