Thursday Morning and Possibly Afternoon Open Thread

via momup, stan-standing in progress.

Sorry, guys—I'm swamped tonight. I'll try to have something up this afternoon, but in the meantime let's talk about how awesome it is that Stand for Stan is now Stood for Stan

from my bedroom computer desk, as I read the article this morning.

same here, with tears in my eyes

I think it is the fact that he has always been known as a good guy, a gentleman, that makes him so special. That is so rare today. You are more well known if you are edgy and demanding.

God Bless You Stan.

I had somehow never heard the story about playing poker with Willie Mays

The guy’s a national treasure.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

by mattybobo on Nov 18, 2010 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

Bernie actually didn't tell the whole story

Stan walked up to the table and asked if he could play. Mays responded (paraphrasing) “You’re not supposed to be playing with us.” To which Musial said “I just want to play some cards.” So he sat down and played cards.

Zach Cox

Has a .306/.372/.556/.928 line in his last 10 games, with 2 HRs and 10 RBIs. He has 10 K’s against 5 BB’s in 36 AB’s.
I like this prospect.

I am sure the Walrus can play RF...

i think the guy is ready for AA

I know that 70 PAs is a SSS, but its big enough to show that Cox isn’t completely lost at the level he’s playing. He’s hit at a .254/.319/.444 clip over the course of all that and he’s just gotten better and better as the season went along. Start him at Springfield.

From my understanding

The biggest jump in the minor leagues is from High A to AA. So Palm Beach would be a good place to start the season

That's great to see

I hadn’t looked in a week or two. Glad he’s getting comfortable and producing. I’d love to see him in AA but wasn’t Wallace considered more polished, and yet they started him in low A?

The Man
“What did I ever do to deserve all of these awards?”

I never got to see him play. I’ve seen him in person one time. But he is a truly inspiring figure. While many have been given the title, Stan is a (and one of the few) genuine “Sport Hero”.

I really enjoyed Bernie’s article. What did you do to deserve all these awards? You have inspired an entire city for over 70 years, you have exemplified the best that “America’s Pastime” has to offer, and you have provided a model that any sports figure would be wise to follow. Congratulations Stan!

What is everyone thought’s on a Rasmus-J. Upton swap? Now, I would only make the trade if I thought Jay could play average to above average centerfield. IIRC, he was a CF in the minors and a damn good one at that.

by njnick on Nov 18, 2010 10:43 AM EST reply actions

2008-2010

Upton’s OBP has been 350ish each year. In 09 he had slugged .100 pts higher than he did in ’10 leading to the .900ops in 09. He is signed thru ’15 after signing a 6yr 50m contract in ’10.

by njnick on Nov 18, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

I don't really see the point of pursuing Upton if it costs Rasmus

Rasmus is cheaper. Could be as good. Upton had that huge breakout to start ‘09, then he cooled off a lot. He still had a great year, and he’s still young and should improve, but you could say the same thing about Colby, who’s cheaper.

what's your position?

do you really think the Strauss-feud reporting is worth trading away a cost controlled player with lots of power and great defense at a premium position? don’t get me wrong, I like Justin Upton, but with Pujols and Holliday (and Lohse) on the team, why would we take on more money for a player that is at most marginally better, or perhaps not even better at all?

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Nov 18, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure.

I dont know if I would trade Rasmus for Upton either. But I am open to thinking about it. Upton is an incredible talent – moreso than Rasmus. He is 23 yrs old and just completed his 3rd (?) year in the majors. He demolished minor league pitching. In the majors he has not had an OBP lower than .350 all while just being old enough to drink.

Rasmus is a great player but Upton is better. Upton’s WAR for the last two years are 5.2 and 3.8 respectively. I would do the trade tomorrow if I knew the answer to the following questions.
1) Can Upton stay healthy
2) Can Jay play an above average CF.

Upton is signed to a team friendly contract through 2016. Yes, Rasmus is cost controlled but Upton’s arb years have already been bought unlike Rasmus.

Sliding Upton into the 5 spot would look really really nice. Unfortunately the trade is not going to happen because the D’backs will want more than just Rasmus for Upton.

It really astounds me what some people are willing to give up and accept for the sake of fitting in / not causing a scene and convenience. basically, … living.. exposes you to radiation. You know, there have been studies that show a slight positive effect for very low levels of radiation exposure. The theory is it stimulates the body to repair low-level damage.

A lot of studies are correlation/causation issues, though

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Nov 18, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

Well, yea,

and there’s data on both side of this issue but, for what I’ve seen/read (and, admittedly, it’s not enough to claim any “expert” status or anything) the data/studies that support the slight benefits of low-level exposure seem to be at least as convincing as those that claim that even exceedingly low exposures are harmful (the zero threshold idea).
The thing is, it’s all statistics. Any one single interaction with a gamma ray/x-ray, etc. could be the one that creates a cancer, but, on average, exposure to 500 mrem or less a year doesn’t carry much risk.
‘Course, I’m probably somewhat inured to worrying about small exposures like this. I may be the most irradiated VEB’er (probably not overall, but occupationally, it’s very likely that I am), and the only problems I’ve ever had are a couple of skin cancers caused by our old friend Sol.

You do not have that right apparently.

Once you get in line, you forfeit the right. It’s a “fine print” thing that most people are not aware of. Even saying that you opt out of all the searches and that you wish to leave the airport can lead to fines. Do you have an extra $10,000 for this? I don’t.

All over the internet are stories from people who have protested this. Some might be facing civil lawsuits. Others went through enormously frustrating ordeals that have so far led nowhere. The only way to beat it – without violent revolt – is by playing within the system. Time and money.

People are opposing this and I think these measures will be reduced to the previous pat-down procedures or they’ll make the scanners mandatory. It’s less about freedom than it is about PR.

And because of the Dept of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act and all the other ridiculous measures put into place by our elected officials (WHO KEEP GETTING REELECTED while the ones who opposed these measures aren’t), we DON’T have the right to fight this stuff. It will take time and the ACLU and test cases to get this to stop.

Just like with everything else. It’s never been as simple as citizens fighting. It takes a lot of money. That’s the thing with our democratic republic: it moves slowly.

Explain the "young country" comment.

Because Europe is obviously much older and yet, like you said, it wasn’t until 1989 that things became “largely stable.” And there have been loads of wars/skirmishes/riots in Europe over all manner of things since 1989.

Believe me, I’m in agreement with you that many Americans are far too complacent. But then again, many things DON’T affect their day-to-day lives. There are many issues that we don’t consider until we learn about them. I’m sure it’s no different in Europe.

people do take a stand, but like spants said, things simply don't happen overnight.

i think of a lot of examples of people speaking out and standing up for their rights that took years or even decades to come to fruition.

slavery, civil rights, in particular, are good examples. brown vs. board of education (the case holding that separate was NOT equal) was decided in 1954. All the way through the 1960s schools were still segregated in the south.

That is not a universally shared view

some have also argued that the radiation being only skin deep is actually more dangerous because it is more concentrated on one organ (i.e the skin). I do not have the science chops to know whether or not that is true.

by SouthsideCardsFan on Nov 18, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

You know what else causes a ton of radiation exposure to the skin?

The sun.

Look, I am pretty much guaranteed skin cancer. Both my grandmothers have it and I’m basically translucent. I definitely think the scanners pose a potential radiation risk. But so do lots of other things.

And again

“Skin deep” privacy is dead in all its forms for adults, kids, dogs.

There’s really no point in fighting it, pervs can get all kinds of material whether you submit to some TSA guy looking at 100,000 of these a day or not. If someone was motivated enough, they could get naked pictures of your kids far easier than they could by trying to hijack cloudy TSA images and rendering them up to real life with the correct matching faces. Hell, what’s the difference between photoshop and that anyway?

Any shield of privacy is just a happy thought and not reality. It sucks but that’s life in the the 21st century. Openness is going to win in all its forms. Trying to fight it is how you end up with Windows Mobile.

I have had knee replacement surgery

Every time I would fly I had to get patted down. It is no fun. I didn’t mind the patting but while they are patting you, someone else has possession of your carry-on, purse, coat etc. And then you have to wait for someone to come and pat you while you wonder who is making off with your stuff.

To me a full body scan sounds like heaven.

One thing to consider

is the fact that Israel has the population size of Virginia and the land mass of New Jersey.

While their political climate gives them as much (probably much more concern) over safety, they also have a MUCH smaller number of fliers to accommodate. The US has 17 of the world’s busiest airports. Israel doesn’t have one in the top 50.

i have flown internationally within the last 2 weeks…Didnt get the naked scan, but did get patted down. It is pretty much a full pat down, you almost feel like you need to introduce yourself.

I would see how a pat down would prevent terrorism, Oh and by the way the airport security gets wanded too. Watched em.

the real joke is customs, we were prepped for it, but flying to India and from India customs was pretty lax. They barely talked to us and just stamped us through..

however someone in our group thought it would be appropriate to split up him and his family going through customs, he was there quite a bit answering questions

I am so sorry I missed the beatles thread yesterday

they have such a massive amount of really great material. And it doesn’t matter if it’s early/late, it’s all really amazing. I don’t think I could even attempt a favorite list. It’s easier to compile a list of songs that aren’t so great.

To me, what made ’em great:

1) 2.5 – 3 really amazing song writers that wrote constantly
2) 3 really amazing vocalists that harmonized sublimely together (I like Ringo’s singing too, but he’s several notches below the other 3 lads).
3) excellent musicianship (not as high a level as the singing and writing, but still damn good – many of George’s solos are compositions unto themselves).

This is going to be a random, awkward story

But some famous bassist was trying to learn a Beatles song for a tribute, and he said that Paul’s bassline was basically a solo for the entirety of the song

Paul gets underrated a lot because on records, having a loud bass makes the grooves have to be higher, which throws the needle off the path. They had to turn his bass way down to fit the albums onto records, so a lot of his genius basslines go unnoticed

buying tickets on Stubhub is the way to go anyway

There are always way better seats/prices than getting them from the cards site anyway. Two years ago my dad and I got partial season tickets, but this last year we didn’t and I went to way more games. Most of the tickets I got off stubhub, and I never even paid close to face value. I usually had great seats too (infield or outfield box seats for $20-$40). The closer to the game the better, people get nervous and don’t think their seats will sell. I got dugout box seats the morning before a Sunday game against the Angels last year for $35 each!

In my opinion at least, from having bought season tix before, Stubhub is a much better value.

Tiered pricing is pretty standard these days

I know for a fact the Brewers, the Chubbies, the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Giants all do it, and I’m sure many others, too.

It's different than that.

Ticket prices can change on a daily basis. More of a supply and demand thing.

Yes, they're doing what the Giants did last year.

The Cards had been doing tiered pricing for a few years now — Cubs, inter-league, weekends, holiday games were all more expensive. Now (supposedly) the prices will fluctuate on a day to day basis.

As someone who lives in SF and bought Giants tickets a few times last year

My experience is that this isn’t really that big of a deal. The concept may be irking, but in practice, I haven’t found it to be that big of a problem. One time last year I found out later that tickets in my section had gotten $5 cheaper than what I bought them for, but that’s not really the end of the world.

Astros do it too.

But it’s usually been only for the Yankees and Red Sox, IIRC.

didn't know about the books

I remember seeing some program having to do with phobias, and he was in it as an example of agoraphobia or something where he just up and retired and lives with his parents and never goes outside, declines all interview requests, etc.

He had a pretty rough (relatively...) second half of the season

As Ryan Howard will tell you, if you want to go batshit insane, do it in the second half, because that’s what voters remember

I'm guessing the innings pitched gap is what sold them

But yeah, Cliff Lee got zero recognition for a fantastic season, for some reason.

that wasn't what strauss meant by #poaching, rains.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives."
