Team payroll investment rate relative to revenue
Not surprised to see Cardinals fairly low on this list. Of course, this was pre-Holliday contract.

Our 2009 payroll was 77 million???
How could it have been that low?
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Good question.
There are no sources. I wish it was a better article, but I still find the premise interesting.
It is an interesting premise
I know the Cardinals do something unexpected when they tabulate their official payroll numbers… like, they don’t count something towards a certain year’s total that you might expect them to. Don’t remember what it is exactly, or if it is even unusual.

Hmmm.
According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, our 2009 payroll was $ 88,528,409. Using this number, and assuming that their revenue numbers are correct, we would be at 45%, tied with Boston and Cleveland. Another interesting aspect to this, which they are lacking, is paying off debt for building new stadiums.
