Roy Halladay pitches a no-hitter; Evan MacLane pitched for the Cardinals
So, Roy Halladay. What's scary about Roy Halladay is he set or matched career highs in a lot of categories this season—strikeout rate, walk rate, shutouts, complete games, the usual Roy Halladay categories—and he's been so good for so long that, before today, media coverage made it pretty easy to think he was having a down year.
Now, of course, it will be as though we all watched his brilliant season with awe from Opening Day. Is he a Hall of Famer? Pragmatically I think last night's performance was more important to his eventual induction than his likely second Cy Young Award will be. Those two injury-shortened seasons after his breakout 2003 hurt the look of his career; what should be an incredible, extended peak is split in two.
But for peak voters it'll be hard to pass up four innings titles, three 20-win seasons, and, most bluntly, the 151-69 record, the 3.04 ERA, the 1961 innings he's thrown in the years since he came back from a 2000 season that nearly put him out of baseball. How good has he been? Since 2002 he's spent much of two years on the disabled list, missing 29 or 30 starts in the process, and still averaged 218 innings per season, which would have been good for seventh in the National League this year, just ahead of Ubaldo Jimenez.
What I like about the possibility of his eventual Hall induction is that it gives me the opportunity to mention Happy Jack Chesbro. Happy Jack, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946 because someone looked at his 1904 season in the encyclopedia and thought to themselves, "41? That's a lot of wins...", is, as far as a cursory Play Index search can tell, the only Hall of Fame pitcher to flame out quite as spectacularly as Halladay did in 2000. At the end of his career, in an abbreviated 1909 season, the spitballer went 0-5 with an ERA of 6.14. It was the height of the dead ball era; the league ERA was 2.47.
Hall of Fame pitchers have had bad years before, and will again, but when you get as far below replacement level as Halladay did it takes most of them an entire terrible season to manage it. That Halladay pitched as badly as a worn-out spitballer when he 23, and has since turned himself into the most consistent pitcher of his era, is remarkable, and if it takes a playoff no-hitter to put his 2297 excellent regular season innings more firmly into public consciousness, all the better.
Meanwhile, I was trying to come up with a picture of the least-memorable Cardinal of 2010, and came to the conclusion that there weren't any especially unmemorable players this year. Sorry, Evan MacLane—Steve Hill at least homered.
I could be wrong, but it seems like we usually get at least one minor league free agent wild-card on the roster for a few days. 2009 had Blaine Boyer, but he's not quite anonymous enough, either; he inspired some minor blog ire because he was traded for the delightful Brian Barton, who's currently hitting .346 with 19 home runs in the Atlantic League and should consider hiring a better agent.
We have to go all the way back to 2008 to find players that meet my exacting specifications, but once we get there you'll find some fine examples. Josh Phelps, former Baseball Prospectus cover-boy, hit 31 home runs for Memphis that year and got a completely unmemorable 19 game call-up. Uncle Rico Washington broke camp with the big club after years in minor league obscurity and lasted just long enough to play four positions.
But the winner of the prize for 2008, far more deserving than poor Evan MacLane, is third catcher Mark Johnson, whose very name dooms him aptronymically to obscurity. A long-tenured former White Sox backup, Johnson hadn't received regular Major League playing time since 2002 by the time he played 10 games for the Cardinals in September, 2008. According to Google he was mentioned 24 times on Viva El Birdos, to Evan MacLane's 115.
This is maybe the least beneficial of all the results of building a deep farm system, but there's something heartening about the Cardinals being able to provide their own fifth-stringers. Even Ruben Gotay, the best of the minor league free agents, couldn't reach the big leagues with his .410 AAA OBP; last year he would have competed with Brian Barden and Joe Thurston for the job at third base.

The only thing I'd disagree with
is that MacLane wasn’t merely anonymous; he was toxic, but fortunately, in small doses. Simply put, he wasn’t very good, whether in his brief major-league “career” or at Memphis. MacLane apologists can argue that he wasn’t given a chance to succeed in the Show. But why is a journeyman minor-league pitcher who was putting up a 4.45 ERA at Memphis — and yeah, the PCL is generally hard on pitchers, but Memphis far less than most — perceived as meriting that chance, except in a “break-glass-in-emergency” kind of way?
Make no mistake: I envy him what he did, and sincerely wish him well in the future. However, if the farm system doesn’t improve to the point that MacLane emergency appearances are no longer needed, somebody isn’t doing their job.

That they didn’t just maintain a quiet dignity about their historic defeat. You can think there are bad calls and be correct, there are bad/missed calls in every game. But in this situation, just take your lumps, congratulate the guy and get ready for the next game.

Agreed
However, I do get the feeling that Halladay, as his career goes on, is achieving such a reputation for being a control artist that he’s getting an almost Glavine/Maddux-esque zone from some umpires. That PG he threw earlier this year was ridiculous; he should’ve walked about 3 or 4 batters with a fair zone.

Beautiful game last night
It was a treat to be able to witness history. I believe Doc would have outpitched anyone that night and I can’t believe Orlando Cabrera’s comments.
I can believe the majority of rr defending Cabrera though. I have a few questions for the veterans of this forum:
Why is the general consensus over at rr that we are all a bunch of inbred hicks? Is this what fanboyism has come to?
Why do they believe there’s some sort of rivalry between the two clubs? Personally I believe it takes a lot to overtake the cubs.
by TheWagonMakerCometh on Oct 7, 2010 10:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Wait... you weren't inbred?
My mom/sis and uncle/dad have a lot of explaining to do.
I would say the rivalry started this year. Usually the Reds are too irrelevant to be a rival. I’m pretty sure most teams in the NL Central look at the Cards as a rival, since we’ve had the most sustained success the past decade or so.

I just laugh when fans boo opposing players for being good.
One could make the argument that it’s a good-natured “we respect your skills and booing you is a way of saying we know that you are good at beating us, which we do not want to happen” but that’s quite an assumption to make for thousands of individual people at the same time, and even if that doesn’t occur it is certainly not a majority of the time.
I guess booing is just fun for a lot of fans and they can’t resist. I try to only boo when there is very good reason to.

I wouldn’t call the Astros a “friendly” rival. Perhaps it’s best to classify it as “non-caveman” behavior towards one another.
I find it’s best not to look at RR, because you’re more than likely to become upset by the total lack of human decency that is found there in regards to most members.

They have a pretty good club and could compete for several years. Until they put together a few winning campaigns, I’ll consider them a decent team that got lucky one year.
If they want to be a rival, they’ll need to get into the pennant race more than once every couple of decades.

that success does breed some animosity. We’re the most successful club in the NLC for the last decade, by some distance, and I’d imagine that every club in the division probably views us as their number one rivals, and perhaps most hated opponents. Us or the Cubs, at least.

Jose would be fine as a backup, though
From what little of him I’ve seen I’d say he’s arguably as good as his little bro behind the plate. Can’t hit for shit, but then which backup catcher can?

I still am kinda sad Brian Barton basically went nowhere in the majors.
In 179 PAs he was worth 1 WAR. UZR really liked his fielding. He seems like a right-handed Jon Jay to me. All of this was small sample size of course, and I also seem to remember that his being a rule 5 draft guy hurt the club’s flexibility with him (right?). But he really looked like a potential cheap, useful player. Those don’t grow on trees.
Letting him go for 16 utterly forgetting innings of Blaine Boyer was sad.

Yeah, I liked what I saw of Barton as well
seemed to have a reasonable approach at the plate and just enough pop that pitchers couldn’t just throw fastballs down the middle. He’s probably a pretty fungible type of player but dumping him for Boyer, and then cutting bait on Boyer so quickly was weird. Just one of the many baffling decisions the club’s made in the last couple of years – probably amounts to very little either way, but it’s an indication of a muddled mindset in the FO IMO.

So what's a fair return for Rasmus?
Obviously, Heyward and Upton are off limits… I wonder if we could pry away Hanson or Ian Kennedy.
Fire La Russa!
Not sure.....
But I hope the Cardinals at least listen. If somebody is willing to overpay, and we can fix problems at 2-3 other positions, WHILE getting back at least one cost controlled player, I think we have to at least listen.
Not saying I’m for or against moving him, just that he is not off limits.
They have to move him...
mgmt. chose the wrong side in The Great Feud of 2010 and now the team is screwed. Best option: reprise the 2010 Giants. Hope someone other than Pujols and Holliday can bring a league average bat and roll out of 15 game streaks of allowing 3 runs or less.
Fire La Russa!
I'd prefer they keep Rasmus,
but sure, if the right package comes along, you pull the trigger.
The questions, however are 1) what is “the right package,” and 2) do we trust Mozielak to actually be able to acquire said package? As we all know, Colby is IMMENSELY valuable owing to his offensive upside and controlled cost at a premium defensive position. I’m not sure other clubs would be willing to part with what should be fair value for him, and I’m not sure I’d want Mo to take 75 cents on the dollar just to “apppease” TLR, if such a thing is even required.
Yeah, I really don't see why it should be required
I think even Tony can get past some elbow-rubbing with a young player, and Colby doesn’t seem to be holding some kind of grudge. I don’t expect him to be traded at all.

Brett Cecil - 2007 1st rounder, 23 y.o., 4 fip in 200 innings in the AL East
Tommy Hanson – 2005 draftee, 23 y.o, 3.3 fip two years running with Atlanta
Ian Kennedy – 2006 1st rounder, 25 y.o., 4.3 fip in a breakout year with Arizona
These three teams were said to be hot on Rasmus, so I just mentioned players that seemed interesting and available. I don’t think the Cards would take a pack of minor leaguers as that would sink the 2011 campaign.
Fire La Russa!
Trade with ATL
1) Rasmus and Skip for Kimbrel, Prado, and another cost-controlled prospect.
2) Pick up Ankiel when Atlanta declines his $6M option and buys it out for $.5M instead
3) …..
4) Profit!
Though #1 might be a stretch… =)
Given that Ankiel was reportedly. . .
one of the main clubhouse problems with which Rasmus had to deal last year, I suspect that #2 will probably not happen.
by SouthsideCardsFan on Oct 7, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it only has a chance of happening
If they trade Rasmus. If they don’t, then no, they won’t pick him up.
Honestly, as much as I’d love to have Kimbrel or Prado, I rather have Rasmus producing for us for years to come. I doubt any of it happens. Just having fun.
I think we'd need something sizeable alongside Kennedy
a middling pitcher with only a couple of cost-controlled years likely isn’t getting it done and, in any case, the D’Backs seem to be in semi-rebuild mode so it’d have to be something from the major league team. Stephen Drew, perhaps? Still, an average SP and an average SS doesn’t seem a fantastic return for a guy with star potential, but I guess I’d consider that deal.
Still bitching to contact.
by Felonius_Monk on Oct 7, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
eh...
Drew only has two years left and he’s going year-to-year with Boras. I don’t see much value there. Better would be Mark Reynolds, who the D-Backs apparently want to unload. That would be a decent deal for the Cards – we could pass on Westbrook, then use the Penny-Westy money to relieve the M’s of Chone Figgins.
Our rotation would be Carp/Waino/Garcia/Kennedy/Lohse + FA signing and the lineup would be Figgins-Jay-Pujols-Holliday-Reynolds-Craig-Molina-Ryan, with a bench of Schumaker, Freese, Greene, and an outfielder.
That’s a team I could be excited about.
Fire La Russa!
No thanks on Reynolds. . .
I love the guy and his TTO ilk, but he is not a good fit for the Cards. He’s a minus defensively at 3B, and while his power isn’t exactly a mirage, he’s a much better hitter in the Snakepit (249/345/507) than he is away from it (235/323/461). High K guys tend to age poorly, too. Adam Dunn is an exception rather than the rule.
And what is your defensive alignment in the OF with that crew? Figgins/Jay/Craig? Ugh.

Reynolds is like 26, I doubt he'll start to age rapidly while he's still under team control
Is there any objective reason to pass on a guy like Reynolds besides the fact that you don’t like him? His home/road split is very typical (and I would think that argument has been shown to be crap now with Holliday).
and his power might be enough
to convince Tony to hit Holliday 2nd.
OTOH, his power means he’ll be overpaid in arbitration…

Look at what they do to Dunn
Howard and Dunn have similar production but Howard was given a huge arbi and Dunn no where close
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
dunn never went to arbitration
he always agreed to terms, meaning he probably left money on the table.
Howard’s first arb was also 3 years after Dunn’s first settlement, even though they are the same age, so he had a big inflation benefit (and it’s certainly not clear that he should have won his arb case).

also, Howard is better than Dunn

I disagree Howard has one Offensive season that jumps out
with a 167 OPS+ beyond that he has two 140 OPS+ seasons, one 130 OPS+ season and two 120 OPS+ seasons.
Dunn has three 140+ seasons five 130+ seasons two 120+ seasons and two 114+ seasons. As far as Defense goes who knows if Dunnkey can become a decent 1B he has only been there for a year and a half and Howard is no APu around first.

Reading comprehension is important
I like him, nay, indeed, my post said that I love him (to be clear, as a baseball player, in a very hetero way). My concerns, that I believe were very clearly stated in my post, are twofold:
1) By the metrics, he is a poor defensive 3B; I believe that makes him a poor fit for the Birds.
2) Low BA, High K sluggers generally have short careers as plus-offensive players. Adam Dunn is the exception. For every Adam Dunn, there are a dozen Dean Palmers. Ha, I typed Dean Palmer before I even looked at Reynolds B-R page. He has a pretty scary set of comparables, according to similarity scores:
Similar Batters
Morgan Ensberg (935)
Jose Bautista (926)
Edwin Encarnacion (924)
Leo Gomez (916)
Russ Davis (916)
Jonny Gomes (910)
Chris Young (910)
Carlos Quentin (910)
Marcus Thames (908)
Willie Greene (906)
Similar Batters through 26
Mike Schmidt (947) *
Dean Palmer (946)
Ron Gant (926)
Matt Williams (926)
Bill Melton (923)
Pat Burrell (916)
Cory Snyder (915)
Edwin Encarnacion (912)
Chris Young (910)
Pete Incaviglia (908)
Maybe he’s got a 5% chance of being Mike Schmidt, but the safer bet is that he’ll be Willie Greene or Edwin Encarnacion or Cory Snyder.

He's 26 right not or something
We don’t care how good he’ll be in 10 years. It doesn’t really matter how bad his defense is in isolation, his overall value is high.
According to MLB Trade Rumours....
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
Keven Kouzamanoff looks to be non-tendered. I’d snap him up in one swish of a cow’s tail to back up Tastee, and maybe Pujols as well. Or maybe traded for. He’s yer ’15-20 HR guy" without the best OB%, who annually generates close to 3 WAR, and who shows very good D UZR/150. I say we get him!

Spare me your taradiddles!!!!

Interesting...
Fangraphs does inded have him at almost 3 WAR per year… surprising given his lack of on base skills. I guess his D really is pretty good, which I didn’t know.
Interestingly, B-Ref’s WAR likes him a lot less, about 1 WAR per year less actually. The differences between the two can be pretty huge sometimes.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Yes, in either case he is a definite pickup.

How can a management team smart enough to trade for Lee and Halladay in back to back seasons be dumb enough to trade Lee for a middling return, or sign a guy with a sub 900 OPS and declining skillset too a 150 million dollar extension?

Amaro's just been somewhat lucky
I think most of the signs point to him being a pretty bad GM. He’s had an amazing core to build with, plenty of money, and hasn’t made too many terrible moves, but overall I think he’s shown a tenuous grasp of player valuation, despite driving a decent bargain in trades.

lee wasn't going to accept an extension
H did. IIRC that was the crux of the matter.
There’s no rationale defense of the Howard deal, unless they somehow calculated that having him on the team sold enough jerseys/tickets etc to make the disparity between payroll and WAR irrelevant.
Well the girls would turn the color of the avocado when he would drive down the street in his El Dorado... -the modern lovers
Or if they figured that this was their extended window of opportunity to become a dynasty
and they wouldn’t mind overpaying for Howard in the long run if it kept the team together in the short one.
not really
he was already on contract through the end of next year. His big extension doesn’t even start until 2012.

Yeah, as much as I think the move is dumb on paper
It does make some sense when you look at it that way. If they decide they have the ability to overpay in order to keep the band together, I can kinda see why they did it. It’s not like there is another sure-thing NL powerhouse in the next couple of years that will definitely challenge them.

so what if lee wouldn’t extend why not keep both then take the picks?
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
So I wasn't able to actually pay attention to most of the Halladay game
I caught the first three innings or so and thought it would just be a pleasant drubbing of the Reds. Halladay was having a great start, retiring the first nine batters in order. Volquez lifted from the game after the Phillies scored four runs in only a couple innings.
It would have been cool if I were able to actually watch the whole thing instead of catching snippets of the first few innings on tv and radio before I had to do other stuff. But, it was also really cool suddenly seeing these headlines like “Halladay’s no-hitter in playoffs only second in history” and going “Holy Crap did that really happen???”

AINAR (Alcohol-Independent Nicknames Above Replacement)
FNP (Future Nickname Potential)
CN (Combo Nicknames – a team stat, Boog/Bombs are usually near the top)

So
What’s the general consensus regarding TLR and a possible return? Like it, hate it, or god-forbid, love it?
by CarpIsMyManCrush on Oct 7, 2010 12:50 PM EDT reply actions
For me, it's "Accepted it as an unpleasant truth."
For all his quirks, crankiness and incomprehensible attachment to older, lesser, potentially useless players, TLR has been one of the best managers in baseball. His performance last season was questionable, but I think he still has the potential to be a net positive if he’s able to maintain a working relationship with Colby.
From everything I’ve read, the veterans seem to still be on board with Tony’s philosophy so the FO wasn’t going to cashier him.
I think I've gone from being on the fence about TLR
to thinking he’s one of the weaker managers in the league these days. I don’t think managers have a great impact on the game, FWIW, so it’s probably not going to cost us too many games no matter who’s in the skipper’s chair, but I think I’d rather try someone else.

tlr, unfortunately in some ways, will be back.
there are too many unknowns if tony doesn’t come back. what would happen with albert? who’s our next skipper?
i’m sick of all his antics like the rest of us, but he’s been very successful despite it. i’m starting to get a little weary of him and the clubhouse, because it sounds like things implode if they get bad – and it’s happened many times before (rolen, edmonds, colby, etc.)
I think we formally offered him the job
Per Leach a couple days back. Hang on….here it is: link.
I suspect he won’t turn it down.
I am still on the fence on TLR
But since he is a known quantity, I think I would like to see him back. This year was awful, and criticism of him was warranted. Hell, he even turned my dad (a strong “managers don’t mean anything in baseball”-type of dude) against him. That being said, I think he took more criticism than he should have, AND who would replace him?
And it seems like the players are loyal to him. I know, I’ve said this before, and it is pretty much impossible to get a true gauge on this team’s players’ thoughts about him. If the players accept his quirks, and have faith in him…well, then that’s (just a bit) more important than what I think. Plus, Albert seems to love him, and if TLR says “This is my last run, one more season, this is it…” I can see our team going on a nice little “let’s send him out in style” run.
Mike Shannon: "That strikeout was brought to you by...by...well, I don't know what it was brought to you by!"
John Rooney: "It wasn't brought to you by anything Mike."
I'll bet plenty of players would be thrilled by a new manager, but they aren't going to say
that until TLR leaves, which might be years from now, but almost definitely isn’t going to be this offseason

The Galaxians were threatening his home world.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
HFS. Utley has been worth 7.7 WAR, 8.1 WAR, and 7.7 WAR from 07-09
5.1 this year, which was cut short b/c of the injury. is it safe to say he is THE most underrated player in baseball?
You teach me baseball and I'll teach you relativity. No, we must not. You will learn about relativity faster than I learn baseball. --Albert Einstein

Probably not
but it’s not unreasonable to say he might be the best, and is certainly one of the most underrated. is the right term to describe micro fracture surgery:
It was the worst-case scenario for the Indians, who knew they were going to lose their center fielder for at least six-to-eight weeks following knee surgery on Friday. Grady Sizemore, though, required a microfracture procedure on his left knee, ending his season and possibly sidelining him to begin spring training 2011.

Sorry,
I worked in union plant when I was much younger and got a good look at how unions work, conversely I know how companies think as well. The whole thing is a sticky wicket. I’ll just say it was one more way that they all converged to fuck up a beautiful part of the game. Isn’t it Ernie Banks that Shannon quotes as saying, “It’s a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. The problem w/ turf was never the turf. It’s that they threw turf down right on concrete. Modern turf applications usually have some medium between the turf and the concrete.

Haven't really followed the American League at all this year
So I was wondering if anyone knows if the Rangers have a good chance to beat the Yankees in the ALCS?? After Lee do they have the starters that can shut this Yankees team down? Just hoping the Yankees don’t make the WS so I might actually give a damn to watch it. I could get into a Rangers-Phillies World Series. A re-run of last year would tune me out. Not sure I can handle another NY Yankee blow-job the media will give out.

My favorite event in baseball is a dominant pitching performance
Thus, these playoffs have been magnificent for me!
Lincebum’s performance last night has pretty much turned me into a Giants fan for this postseason, which pains me to say (the wounds from 2002 have yet to heal). Halladay did something beautiful, but the Phillies have become like the yankees of the NL, and rooting for them is too easy.
I’ve never been able to like Timmeh (he’s still possessing Carp’s 2009 Cy Young), but that was awesome!
Also… How much does AL baseball suck? so damn boring.
