Playoff Triple-Header Open Thread
We've got three playoff games on today, and I hope you are all in a position to watch at least some of them. I haven't yet, but I don't plan on leaving my sofa the rest of the afternoon come hell or high water. I don't really have much of anything interesting to say today, so I'll just let you converse amongst yourselves.
Oh, Joe Strauss did tweet last night he has information the Cardinals will possibly maybe just might try to trade for an impact player. Said it would be in his chat today. You can go see if there was anything useful in their yourself; I'm not doing it.
I'm rooting for the Giants in the National League, because I love their pitching staff and their ballpark. (Seriously, that's an amazing place to watch a ballgame.) On the AL side I'm backing Tampa because I admire their model for success and also, I have to admit, because I'm kind of looking forward to seeing a World Series game played in front of 15,000 people.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for the Braves, but I just don't see their offense being strong enough to carry them through.
Hell, as long as it isn't the Reds, Phillies or Yankees I'll be happy. Just someone but those three, please. For the love of god.

"Trade for an impact player"
Wouldn’t it just make more sense to hold onto Shelby Miller and turn him into an impact player?
The only guy I can think of that would make sense that might be available at a reduced price is someone like Jacoby Ellsbury. If we could pick him up for a B prospect or something I think it would be good gamble. He’d be a good LF for this club, moving Holliday to RF, and he would be a good option at the top of the lineup as well.
Only two concerns really:
- His walk rate, which hasn’t been above 8% since AA.
- Injury history.
Other than that, I think he’s a good gamble. If he could walk at a 9-10% clip, keep his good contact rate, I think he could be a .290/.370/.430 guy with 70+ steals if he can stay healthy.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Does Ellsbury just not have a good arm?
I’m trying to figure on why he wouldn’t be able to play RF since he’s naturally a CF.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.
- John Wayne
He's not "naturally" a CF
He’s a pretty atrocious CF actually. He gets terrible jumps, doesn’t play the ball well in the gap, etc. His UZR and TZ numbers for CF show this, and that’s why the Red Sox went out and got Mike Cameron last year and moved him to LF.
He has an ok arm, but nothing to write home about. I think Holliday probably has a better arm, and he’s demonstrably better at playing balls in the corner, which is something you have to really well in RF because of the distance to third base if you misplay the ball.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Why not just put Skip back into the outfield?
I’ve always been underwhelmed by Ellsbury, so maybe that’s a harsh comment. Does he steal tons of bases or am I thinking of someone else?
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Because Skip's bat. . .
doesn’t play in a corner OF spot, and he can’t handle CF defensively.

To expand,
here are Skip’s SLG by year.
’07: .458
’08: .406
’09: .393
’10: .338

Ellsbury's SLG by year
’07: .509 (in only 127 PA)
’08: .394
’09: .415
’10: .244 (in only 84 PA)
And in any season where he got more than 200 PA in the minors, he only ever slugged .418, .434, .380.
His slash stats are very similar to Skip.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

here's the basic rundown of Struass' scoop on an impending, high-impact trade
the Cardinals are unlikely to make a significant trade during the postseason.
Right, so you’ve got nothing Strauss
GM John Mozeliak insists he is reluctant to part with RazRight, so you’ve got nothing Strauss
But despite public comments by both parties, TLR’s return could resurrect the issue within the organization.Right, so you’ve got nothing but unfounded, speculative bullshit Strauss
For a variety of reasons, Rasmus will almost certainly be in play.Oh, because other teams might be interested in a young, cost-controlled CF stud. Okay, you’ve finally given us something Strauss—the obvious. That’s not nothing, but it’s next to nothing.
…That was seriously his exclusive, insider scoop. The fact that he gets paid to do this boggles my mind.
that guy is an idiot

Mozeliak hasn’t struck me as the sharpest GM, but he’s not an idiot either (I hope). The chances of us getting surplus value in return for Rasmus are very, very slim. Mo has to know that…you have to know that, right Mo!?!
I hope you're right
but TLR and also we will get something nice in return, but I’m afraid it won’t be enough and that I’ll have to curse the Cardinals while Colby becomes the best CF in baseball for a while

I was a bit nonplused, to say the least. I’m thinking the only album of theirs I’m going to like is Microcastle.
I’ve been really into jazz and fusion lately. Mahavishnu Orchestra rocks. also, if you are in Chicago and have a chance to see drummer Ted Sirota, do it. his band Rebel Souls is amazing, and also he plays late night sets at the Green Mill every Friday night I think.

I thought the one before that was ok, but not nearly as captivating
I like some of the sound experiments on the new one, but I just don’t really grab onto the lyrics like I did with Microcastle, and the new one has more of a pop sound, which I don’t like that much.

Alright alright.
The Rays are in a small market no matter what their payroll is. They’re losing Crawford and probably selling a bunch of parts this off-season, so this might be their last run for a few years.
The Rangers aren’t in a big market, but they’ve spent a ton of money in the past. They’ve just spent poorly. So while their payroll has shrunk in recent years while TB’s has grown, TB has only had a larger payroll than the Rangers for one season, 2010.
Still limits the money they can spend.
Plus, the Rays are rocking a payroll a whopping $8M greater than the Rangers. We’re not talking Yankees/Twins. Now quit trolling me, kid.
now let's see if i can a proxy rocking so that i can watch this phils/reds game

bonus: who starts game 3? JAIME GARCIA or Westy?
You teach me baseball and I'll teach you relativity. No, we must not. You will learn about relativity faster than I learn baseball. --Albert Einstein
Waino game 1. Carp game 2.
Tony would probably start Westy 3 so as to avoid “pressuring” the rookie.
side note
Jaime pitched a gem at the Bank
overall 2 earned runs vs the Phils, in 2 games

..i miss ludriguez-wick..
"I still don’t understand what commercial is better than having me on tv" – Chris Carpenter
yeah but if they do start roy on short rest we'll be down 2-2 at some point(and that's assuming we beat hamels and oswalt)
*not down, tied up.
but still it could work out like this
Halladay-Soup L
Oswalt-Waino W
Carp-Hamels W
Halladay-Soup L
giving two automatic wins to philly forces us to win every game he’s not pitching(3-0)
/kind of defeats the purpose if we pitch waino in game 2 and we have a elimination game for game 4.
why would you start soup first and fourth though?
at this point use westy and/or jaime
and i mean soup assuming soup pitched like he did the last game, it might give us a shot. although against the philly bats, he’d prolly be done in no time
..i miss ludriguez-wick..
"I still don’t understand what commercial is better than having me on tv" – Chris Carpenter
well the other thing is, halladay isn't unhittable. i mean, his ERA was slightly better than waino's this year, and he DID lose games.

yeah but you really can't set your playoff rotation with the assumption that he's infallable.
see Carpenter, Chris, c. 2009.
In reality, it would be Waino in game 1, bottom line. I think, too, that the rest of our rotation – Carp, Jaime, and Westy, are all good enough to beat Hamels and Oswalt. So really its not like you’re wasting Waino’s start.
And, my $.02 is that Jaime has to start against the Phillies given the way he shut them down in the regular season.

Agreed
I was okay with him getting it and I know this game doesn’t count toward Cy voting, but it really seals that he is deserving of the award for best pitcher in the NL for 2010.
i never understood the whole inequality bw the two
halladay had much different season than waino…halladay varied up and down between starts
doc: 8 starts…4 or more runs
adam: 7 starts…4 or more runs
doc: 4 starts…5 or more runs
adam 2 starts…5 or more runs
the aggregate stats are similar but they can be misleading…and adam trumps doc in avg and ops versus…and the perfect game is nice but thats not exactly bonus points…i mean edwin jackson pitched a no—hitter.. only it took 190 pitches….the perfect is but cosmetics in the end
plus adam had to pitch to the best 2 hitting clubs in cincy and mil
then FESPN was like “its a lock now for cy young” after Doc pitched his final game on the 27th…when adam still had one start left (news was not out yet that he would be scratched)…so basically they were writing him off anyway, even if adam threw a perfect game in his last start which he missed

....
ule 6.05 (g) states:
A batter is out when…
after hitting or bunting a fair ball, the bat hits the ball a second time in fair territory. The ball is dead and no runner may advance. If the batter-runner drops the bat and the ball rolls against the bat in fair territory and, in the umpire’s judgment there was no intention to interfere with the course of the ball, the ball is alive and in play;
Rule of thumb here is bat hits ball a second time versus ball hits bat a second time and of course, umpire’s judgment on intent to interfere.

There it is.
No intent, play on.
Great play by Ruiz.
Albert has the advantage of being ridiculous - FredbirdisaDork
The way I read that rule, the "no intent" part only applies to other runners,
and regardless of intent the batter is automatically out. But it’s a little ambiguous.

by CarpIsMyManCrush on Oct 6, 2010 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
In the video as Ruiz is picking up the ball the home plate umpire is signalling safe,
which I assume means Phillips isn’t automatically out because of the bat. But it does look like the bat and ball touched, so maybe your interpretation is right.

they are correct, but not because Bruce walked. What would have made it perfect would have been if Cueto had started, been shelled and so demoralized that he came back and pitched like Brad Thompson for the next 4 seasons before finally retiring in shame.

Halladay did NOT no-hit my MLB 2k10 team. Chief Justice broke it up with 1 out in the bottom of the 1st. An obviously rattled Halladay then threw a hanging slider which Pujols hit 373 feet over the left field fence. After a 3 pitch K of Holliday, Colby took him yard again. Updates coming soon.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Buck O'Neil, from "The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America."

i dunno how much stock to put into this but...
TBS asked Dusty what they were going to do to get to Halladay in the like the fifth. Dusty said to change it up try and and get to him early. Then the TBS announcers gave credit to the Phillies’ catcher noticing this and calling the game differently.
Um. Really? If they did change their approach you don’t think broadcasting it on tv had anything to do with it? And Dusty, if you were going to change your approach. Don’t tell people you are going to do it.
I didn’t get on base. One time I did (Wednesday) and we scored a run. That shows if I get on base, things can happen - Oilspill
i think so
early on they were taking a pitch. Dusty then stated that they were going to start jumping on the first pitch. Halladay’s first pitch selection then migrated from fastballs to off speed stuff.
Now, I have no idea how much of this was ESPN talking out of their ass.(cuz I wasn’t paying attention to first pitch swings or pitch selection.) And even if Halladay did start throwing more offspeed stuff for his first pitch afterwards, it was his second time through the order and that could have been his game plan anyway.

this is some
good wordsmithing. I love a good climax. don’t you?
In the worst of times, and Roy Halladay doesn’t have many of those, the man is unhurried. In the best of times — like when he pitched his perfect game on the road against the Florida Marlins on May 29 — there’s something almost laconic about him. You’ve seen that in other confident, capable people, haven’t you? Even though he works quickly on the mound, it’s so efficient. In interviews, even right after a game, every word is measured. He signs autographs in neat, careful penmanship. Wednesday night, when he shook off his catcher, Carlos Ruiz, which he seldom did, the shakes left and right were slow and short, slow and short.
The walk to the dugout between innings became slower and slower and slower. Slow in the sixth. Slower yet in the seventh. Even slower in the eighth. He made eye contact with nobody. He just stared into that place where batters go to die.
