A Request for Spring Training Information

I got an e-mail from a reader (I'm assuming it's a VEB reader since FR is defunct at the moment -- offseason farm synopsis: the farm is pretty awful) asking me some questions about Spring Training.  I know less than nothing about that topic but I'm certain that readers here can provide some help.

I came across your blog as it was highly recommended and it didn't disappoint. I know where to turn if I need any Cardinals info!

I am a big Mets fan, and have a blog myself (http://longlivesheastadium.blogspot.com) that is just focused on the Mets right now, but will expand to National League coverage once Spring Training/the season gets under way.

I'm planning on going down to Port St. Lucie when pitchers and catchers report (Feb 17-24), and wanted to swing by a day to check in on the Cardinals and Marlins if possible. Do you know how that works since games won't be played? Is anybody allowed to just walk around, or would I be better served to try to get a press pass/media credentials (and any additional info on this would be greatly appreciated).

Thanks so much for your help; if you need any Mets info, feel free to email me.

A few comments:

  1. Flattery will get you everywhere with robots.
  2. Be nice to this e-mailer.  The Mets are going to suck something fierce in 2010.
  3. I'm exceptionally skeptical of the Cardinals giving out any kind of media pass to a blogger.
  4. In addition to any info you can provide on ST, give me the over under on Omar Minaya or Jerry Manuel being fired June 1st.

Thanks for the help.

Also, if anyone finds any good deals for hotels

please post them up (looking at you, deal guru Flim). I’ve found affordable flights, but all the hotels in Jupiter seem to be on the expensive side. Anyway, I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but I thought maybe we could use it as a sort of clearinghouse for all spring training info, since there are always a lot of questions and they seem to get scattered. Mods – If that’s not a good use for this thread, let me know and I’ll delete this.

And how will you delete this?

Is there some sort of delete post voodoo that I don’t know about?

Attending my first Spring Training

I am going to go down for the Red Sox game and the Astros game the next day. I found that the hotels in Jupiter were really expensive, for the most part. Ended up with a Marriott for around 150, I think for the one night. I’m lucky in that I have family about half an hour away, so only need to do the one night at the hotel.

On another note, I was caught off guard with the tickets going on sale at 9 am and only got standing room only for the Sox and 200 level behind home plate for the Astros. Anyone have insight into how those should be in the stadium – especially the SRO (they are super-premium SRO – whatever that means…)?

by brafi on Jan 21, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

I went in 2006

And we ended up renting a condo from a guy in Abacoa, which is the name of the development containing the stadium. So we just ended up waking up, walking to the stadium to stand in line for tickets, and then walking to breakfast before the game. If anyone decides to go this route, I would try VRBO.com.

Also, as far as tickets go, we once approached the box office about 15 minutes before game time, asked for the closest available, and ended up 2 rows behind home plate. Granted, they were playing the Nationals, but I was pretty shocked that those seats were available.

went to ST '09

Not when pitchers and catchers were reporting..but for early warmups everything was fenced off and we could walk up and talk to the players and coaches if they wanted to respond.

Could’ve gotten onto the field easily, could’ve easily gotten arrested.

I was there for that same timeframe last year

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Drive down to the south side of the complex and there will be an entrance for the players and a security guard is usuallly posted there.
  2. The guard should have the schedule for the workouts that day and he should be able to give you a copy (I still have mine from last year)
  3. He’ll let you know to go east of that gate about 400 yards or so where you’ll be able to enter the complex, but only after the workouts start (usually after 10 AM).
  4. At this point, go get some fantastic coffee from the coffee shop located 3 blocks away from the stadium to the south. I ran into Pat Parris and Al Hrabosky at this coffee shop last year and had a fun 10 minute talk with them (Parris used to be the local sportscaster for the Des Moines NBC affiliate when I was growing up)
  5. You’ll have access to two of the fields they use, and there will be two other fields that you won’t have access to. Both times I was there they had pitchers throwing off of mounds on one field and catchers working out on the other field. I went back a couple days later and they had pitchers throwing to position players in a batting cage on one field and a pitching machine going on the other field.

Ludwick was signing bats, balls, and gloves and gave a bat he broke against Motte to a kid that was there after signing it last year. There’s a temp fence where the players will gather between stations when there’s time. I got to talk to Tony, Red, and Bill DeWitt last year while a scrimmage game was going on and it was a pretty fun time.

Not sure how the Marlins area works but I’d imagine that it wouldn’t be that different. Some people at the Cardinal workouts were talking about how they had seen Hanley Ramirez take BP the day before and he hit 6 of 8 pitches out of the yard or something…

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

If you have kids

This is the perfect opportunity for them to get face-to-face with players. The crowd usually isn’t that big, and you’ll be closer to the players than I was at any of the three ST games I went to last year.

If you're a minor league watcher

There’s a complex of four fields around the back of where the major league camp works out where you can watch the entire farm system (minus big-league camp invitees). I always go there before the games. There’s usually a crowd watching the major leaguers, I’ve never spent more than a few minutes with them (the last time it was pitchers taking batting practice). The back fields where the kids play is where the action’s at.

I was back there two years ago hoping to see Allan Craig field some balls at third when Troy Glaus sat down on the bleachers fifteen feet away from me. He seemed like a nice dude, autographed a ball for a kid who kept pestering Jon Jay for another autograph (he’d already signed the ball and suggested the kid bring him some shoes or a bat to sign). Jay was videotaping his teammates swings.

Spring Training is a fantastic experience. Beer prices went way up last year, though. In 2008, they were selling Amber Bock for $3 at Roger Dean.

well, that is a bygone beer era!!

I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

These fields are wide open

Plus the Marlins use another set of fields right next door, so you can see young guys from 4 (or more teams) back there. On occasion, they will invite independent league guys to play against their players.

They're wide open

but surprisingly few people wander back there.

It looks like a place you shouldn't go...

…but nobody will hassle you. The Phillies’ Carpenter Complex is like that, too as long as you obey the signs and ropes.

I will be attending spring training for the first time also

Thanks for the great information. We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Yes, too expensive but oh well. I have tickets for the Red Sox game but I had to go to Stub Hub to buy them. Again too expensive. I was online at 9:25 the day tickets went on sale and all the tickets were gone for that game except standing room. (I hate people that buy up tickets with no intention of ever going to the game. /off soapbox )

I will be looking at the minor league fields also. Although many of last years Springfield Cardinals will have ST invites. CAN’T WAIT.

I think these are the cages...

…just East of Roger Dean Stadium. Basically behind RF.

Go to Google Earth and enter Roger Dean Stadium. From what I recall, the buildings with the white roofs are where the batting cages are located.

The parking lot where the guard is located is also down the RF line.

P.S. Thanks for the details. This fills in some blanks for me.

Minaya under

Manuel over (New GM will decide to fire him or not)

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

there seems to be a minaya under consensus here. i say the gary matthews jr. business is just a "fuck you" gesture on the way out the door.

if they let him stay through april, a jose guillen trade may go through.

if you don't know what is wrong with me, then you don't know what you've missed. - macmanus

Thanks for the Warm Welcome

I am the Mets fan that started this thread, and I thank you for some valuable information.

In regards to the over/under, I am a firm believer that firing a general manager (and for the most part the manager) during the year is worthless. If you don’t have faith in Omar right now, then fire him now. But as we’ve seen over the past few years, every decision with the Mets is not done ideally. Omar should have this full season as the make or break. I do think Jerry Manuel will survive the year, although I’m not his biggest fan.

As far as the Mets outlook for the year, we will be “ok” if we sign Sheets. and I’ll define ok as 88-91 wins. It’s not a guarantee to make the playoffs, but we will be in a position to improve at the deadline if necessary.

Gary Matthews was another interesting acquisition by Omar, but it is a very low cost and little downside. Would I have made the move, no, but it’s not the end of the world either way.

Good luck, and thanks again for the info.

Sheets...

is the determining factor in making it to an 88-91 win season for the Mets?

by mynameistyler on Jan 25, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

re: Sheets

Yes, right now the Mets “on paper” would be an 85-87 win team. Add Sheets and a nice platoon addition of Garko, they should be between 88-91 win team
