He's signing on the lightest part of the image, in most instances.
Without one of those metallic paint pens, the autograph won’t show up. Maybe there is some sort so subconscious junk-depicting going on, but it seems more likely that McGwire is signing where the autograph will be legible.

I know..while you may have some logic there..why is it that the loop of the G is almost always in that
location? It has to be on purpose.
What is really funny is that
McGwire and Canseco were considered “big” back in the day. Look at that first pic. If either were playing today, they’d be average or slightly larger than average.
