Post-game Mix-tapes 2009
Almost as bizarre as the team-building exercise with facial hair, the Cardinals post-game interviews of 2009 were marked by truly strange choices of music. On July 27, 2009, at the cusp of the strangest, wildest summer of stunning trades, kismet chemistry, creative high-fives, and of course, breath-taking baseball – we were introduced to the soundtrack of victory.
Victory in 2009 was awfully cheesy.
FSM-watching VEB could not figure out if the team had brought a CD or a loaded iPod on the road. It was so corny and dated that we figured it might've been a cassette tape, perhaps from someone's prom after-party. We did not know who was responsible, or why it was allowed to continue. Sometimes it was a local radio station; at least once it was confirmed as a volume from a dance mix. Reporters from the clubhouse confirmed some of the music via Twitter, so we knew we weren't imagining it. From that day on, a dedicated team of volunteers (thank you, fellas and ladies! particularly Ghostrider520, andi_k, and The Continental) compiled the songs, trying to find some sort of a pattern.
Yes, that was Tony shaking his head at the Ghostbusters theme.
Yes, those were Top Ten 80s tunes that you probably last heard through a haze of drunken karaoke.
Yes: through the laughter and giggling in at least two languages, through the high-pitched voices of players' kids, they turned up the volume.
Except when Carpenter gave an interview. That's when it was turned way, way down.
So – as the year draws to a close – in lieu of my actually getting enough time to cover the second-half in poetry form, here is our incomplete record of the music of the 2009 Cardinals team, during their Summer of Stache. Oh, Man Stew... we can't take you anywhere, can we.

it was a surprising amount of work
for everyone. it’s like the dorky enigma of ’09.

what else were we going to do? leave the basement & talk to women? bah!
Every morning I wake up & smoke a dart. Then I eat five strips of bacon, & for lunch I eat a bacon sandwich. And for a midday snack? Bacon! A whole damn plate! And I usually drink my dinner. And I'm still here! Sometimes I wonder if God forgot about me.
I sat through many, many more TLR pressers
than usual to capture some of that information.

I know one of the songs
was “Guns & Cigarettes” by Atmosphere b/c it was mentioned on that game’s board, but for the life of me I could not recall which game that was.

Looking forward to Cardinals baseball in 2010!
thanks! it was Sept 2 (so Sept 1 game...)
I’m afraid I may have to review the whole thing post-by-post, because that was completed the next day, and I have totally different songs for that day.
