Game "138" Post-Game thread

For all those feeling confident:

We were 15.5 games up on September 18, 2004.

From the recap:

As for the game, Chris Carpenter felt a twinge in his biceps and called it a day after pitching just three-plus innings. He and the Cardinals thought a serious injury probably was avoided by the decision.

The 15-game winner left in the fourth inning with a strained right biceps, but four relievers helped complete a six-hitter. Carpenter is expected to miss only one start, partly because he didn't try to gut it out."It's against normal pitching, they keep going," catcher Mike Matheny said. "Fortunately, I think he stopped in time to give us a chance to let the trainers get him right. Hopefully, that'll be the case."

I don't want to seem like I've got a big head

But I thought it was funny that I posted a pic of Albert and commented that he missed the pitch by maybe 1/8 of an inch. Then a couple of days ago someone hits a hard grounder and Ricky comments about how he missed that pitch by 1/8 of an inch.

Also, I do think someone with the Cards does read VEB. Probably an intern, but I think I have seen stuff filter back to people.

Why did MLB let the Brewers to host us on both Memorial Day and Labor Day?

Furthermore, why didn’t the Cardinals have a home game on any of the Big 3 holidays? Memorial Day, Indepedence Day, and Labor Day, all on the road. It makes no sense. I wonder how many other teams played on the road for each holiday.

That said, if you’d have told me that Carp would start on Memorial Day and Labor Day, having double-digit strikeout totals in each game, I’d have been thrilled. After that masterful performance, I am thrilled.

Here's an amazing stat

from the AP game recap: “It was the 15th consecutive time that the Cardinals won the first game of a series. The last series opener St. Louis lost was a 3-2 decision at Houston on July 20.” Talk about jumping on a team quick – that’s just awesome.

Manny Parra for the Brewers tomorrow...

Every time I see his name, I think THIS will be the time we finally knock him around like the rest of of the league does. But I’m wrong every time, so I’m predicting no more than 2 ER in no less than 7 IP.

by LukeMP1186 on Sep 7, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

No kidding

Dude’s pitched four games against us this year and has a lower ERA against us (2.42) than any other team he’s faced but the DBacks (one game, 1.50 ERA). His ERA is over 9.5 for half of the 14 teams he’s faced, for Christ’s sake! Take out his games against us and his ERA goes up a full run, to 7.49. If you don’t like ERA, the pattern is roughly the same for WHIP, BAA, etc. Hopefully time for a little regression tomorrow.

Because of that sweep we trade Haren for Mulder.

That trade was obviously a terrible one, and Mulder was terrible in 2006 before his season ended. But if you subscribe to the chaos theory, would we have ever won the World Series if that trade doesn’t happen? Sure, Haren would have made it a better team, but who knows how that affects the outcome.

There’s no chance I’d take the Longoria deal, wouldn’t even have to think about it. Longoria already had ~2 million in the bank, he was going to be okay for the rest of his life regardless. Getting ~9 million more in the bank guaranteed doesn’t do it for me when I’m already rich and that’s almost guaranteed with any semblance of health anyway. what gdm said. moar violence, courtesy St. Pete Times
The pain Carlos Peña felt after being struck on the left hand by CC Sabathia’s 93-mph fastball, then when he tried valiantly to stay in Monday’s game and checked his swing, was excruciating, enough that he wondered later how he didn’t pass out.

But the reality that his season was over — the result of two broken fingers — was worse.

that’s how quick it could turn…….

meanwhile, others tempt the GOBs:

After a lengthy delay — in which he was jeered and booed by the Yankee Stadium holiday crowd — Peña took a few practice swings and felt the pain, though considerable, was manageable.

i give it a "8.5"

In fact, it would have been an “7.5”, except that he scored, giving him an automatic +1.

A major league float should never require contact between both hands and the ground. You may say, dude, it was just a pinky and a middle finger, and he had nice rotation, but both hands at once is a major foul. A real major leaguer would have been able to score without touching the ground, at all.

I am amazed at how many people on here hate football

I have always thought the two main sports went mostly hand in hand.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

but it is aggravating to hear the sighs of relief for pre-season exhibition games when baseball is on its postseason run. or to have NFL ads brazenly proclaim they are America’s game during the MLB playoffs.

It's my personal Thanksgiving Holiday.

The wife and I have left the states for mexico every Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years (since we both get that Thursday and Friday off as holidays, we can be gone for six days and only take two vacation days), so we have a big turkey/stuffing/etc fest with our friends the weekend prior called fakesgiving. Kind of gets the whole holiday season started. Jams, really.

My dad and his friend used to film a fake hunting show when I was a kid.

It was complete with fake endorsements and commercials. Laffy taffy and Seagrams 7were the main sponsors. They called themselves the Smokin Turkeys boys or something like that. I was young and thought it was the coolest thing, so I started using it for my fantasy teams and such.

I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

i met his when he played for the clippers right before he was called up, and the dude could not have been nicer. my reporter buddy says he’s still pretty much the same guy now. which considering how famous he’s become, speaks very well of him & his parents.

part of it
“Unless it’s a certain situation late in the ballgame, or you have a chance to lose the game, or change the game, I’m going to come after you,” Carpenter said. "I’m not wasting pitches.

“I’m trying to get strike one, strike two and strike three as fast as I can, or get you to put the ball in play and let my guys work behind you,” he said.

There’s more about the opponents having to make a decision against him, and then Carp says — that’s when it gets fun.

from strauss, full quote

“Unless it’s a certain situation late when you can lose the game or change the game I’m going to come after you,” Carpenter said. “I’m not wasting pitches. I’m trying to get strike one, strike two, strike three as fast as I can, or get you to put the ball in play and let my guys work behind me. When you do that it puts (the defense) on the offensive. You’ve got to make a decision what you’re going to do. That’s when it gets fun.”

Then something about moving the pitches around.

To me

That’s the proper definition of pitch to contact. Don’t fuck around, just make the hitter do something. Or don’t do something and go back to the dugout.

So Troy Glaus

I’m sure i missed this some how with all the warcraft i’ve been playing lately but….how come troy glaus is turning into our everyday third basemen? I thought he was irreparably damaged never to throw from third base again?

He flashed his arm a couple times even. Have i just totally missed the conversation surrounding this completely unpredicted turn of events?

If I put in my raffle ticket for cardinal x-factor as Mr. Glaus do I get bonus points when it pays out?
