I win the laziness award
Ordering Domino’s online: under the Special Instructions for Delivery I put “Just open the door, I’m on the couch and don’t want to get up.” I love technology. Now I can not only have food delivered to my door without having to talk to anyone, I can do so without so much as getting up.

I hope Pujols has a clubhouse rant that goes something like “Eff that Shi’ite MFers we’re gonna win every Effin game the rest of the Effin season to get Effin homefield and go into the Effin playoffs when we’re MFin hot at which point we’ll kill the rest of these MFers with our bare hands, mangs.”

it's official scorer judgement
if the scorer thought the throw would have gotten him out, then it would have been unearned. The scorer didn’t think Skip had a shot at the out, so “earned runner on third” was the state, and the next guy got a single, scoring the run.

That’s run’s created, not runs above replacement. 57 runs created on the year is about what Alex Rios has done in similar plate appearances which is below average overall and especially so for a defensively challenged 3B.

the cardinals have had such a huge problem allocating payroll — weird deals like mulder, piñeiro, lohse, looper, maybe encarnacion — that i don’t see this as much of a problem. and it’s less of a problem if dewitt is sensible and recognizes that holliday’s the kind of guy for whom you raise payroll.

i don’t give a rat’s ass about saving payroll. i’m not dewitt, and i don’t think he’s going to give more money than a player’s worth just because he’s got a gold mine at 3b. the savings most likely would’ve been spent on another looper or mulder or weirdo edmonds extension.
i’m pretty dogmatic about this: payroll for the cardinals is as much a function of opportunity as it is raw cash flow. if they don’t have stars who take something along the lines of the hometown discount, then they have the same basic free agency policy as the pirates. that’s the way most teams operate.
St. Louis Cardinals -- 2006 World Champions
by greenback06 on Sep 5, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's the friggin point

what’s the friggin point? they can’t sign somebody like holliday from the outside. i mean, who’s the best fa they’ve signed from the outside? isringhausen? nice guy to have, but he’s not exactly top tier, and supposedly he took a bit of a discount to be closer to home. after that it’s tino, at least in terms of marquee signings, and he was the booby prize for the yankees taking giambi.
the cardinals don’t win bidding wars, even if they have the cash to do so. that’s what moneyball says you’re supposed to do, avoid winner’s curse.

wrong
WAR means “wins above replacement” and replacement != average
league average all around is about 2 WAR

An average MLB hitter playing 1B is well below average
Not afraid to nitpick
by joker24 on Sep 5, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, no
wallace is a 3b and a 3b is adjusted at +2.5. so if wallace switched to 1b, he’d lose a rwin on the positional weighting, but he’d probably gain about as much from uzr for being an above average 1b. that’s why the positional value is weighted. a league average hitting 1b might slightly less valuable than a the same hitter at 3b, but i don’t think it’s that significant
Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.
by prophetjohn on Sep 5, 2009 1:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
pj, you need to include the position adjustment, which for a 1b makes an average overall hitter into a 0-WAR player.

still no
first of all, i don’t know why we’re putting emphasis on 1b. either way, the positional adjustment for a 1b is -12.5 runs. that’s 1.25 war. which would come out to .75 war before you account for the fact that 1b is a pretty easy position
Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.

isn’t feasible. that’s why getting them for free is optimal. especially when they translate into 5-7 war players 3-5 years from now

he's close to being worth it
if we can sign him for the next three years and he plays at the level he has played at since coming to stl, it was worth it. probably. that partially depends on how close wallace comes to my expectations.

Colby is also a game changing defender while playing CF
Wallace is a 3B who’s probably a 1B. If he hits .253/.309/.367 in the bigs, Wallace is worthless.

by joker24 on Sep 5, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
okay
i’m not saying the thing about colby isn’t true, but i also doubt everyone is so high on him because he’s one of the best defensive cfers in the game. he projects to be a great hitter with a lot of power, too
wallace projects to be probably a better hitter with a little less power. and i’m still not buying into all the digs on his defense. few people have seen him play and the majority of the opinion of his defense is formed almost exclusively by his size. in two years, i doubt he’s any worse than derosa is right now

Just goin with what information I do have
Scouts can be wrong, but they’re also right a lot and it’s universal that they don’t think he’s very good at defense. In any case, assuming he even is average, he has to hit considerably better than he has this year in order to be a big leaguer. That’s not to say he won’t, there’s plenty of development time, just that the stats are saying he isn’t ready. Like I said I loved his BP, but it’s not like he’s beating down the door to the big leagues.
I don’t think many people would be enthused with Rasmus’ season if he were a 3B and not killing all things that go in the air to CF.

thurston – .226/.320/.335
kaheel – .205/.292/.407
barden – .233/.286/.379
infection – .230/.242/.379

and from what i've read,
it wasn’t universal that he was a bad defender. there was a lot of talk that he had dropped a bunch of weight and that he was considerably better than he got credit for.
the big argument was that we had him at 3b because albert was blocking him. then who is blocking him in oakland?

From BA
Some scouts say he’s too stiff to stay at third for the long term, while his advocates say he makes the plays he can get to and could become an average defender with more coaching.
So I mean we’re looking at best case average and the average 3B hits something like .270/.350/.450 which Wallace hasn’t done in the hitter’s league PCL. Again, I think he’ll surpass that eventually but it’s not a slam dunk to me anymore.

those are pretty similar to luddy's numbers,
the league average 3b’s numbers. and luddy has a .338 woba. wallace’s 2009 AAA numbers translate into ~.350woba
in the just the pcl, he was .340 woba. so, yeah, he’s done that in the pcl
Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.

Semantics but .302/.346/.423 < .270/.350/.450
But even that’s irrelevant as the PCL is a monster hitter’s league. Wallace’s MLE wOBA including AA by my excel wOBA with minorleaguesplits MLE’s is .298 which jives with the .253/.309/.367 MLE OPS. Again, he has to improve a lot.

I just think...
That the entire argument about the Lego trade is missing a crucial point… that the FO felt pressure from Mang to win now whilst he is in his prime. Would Mang have stayed around in the alternate future in which Lego doesn’t come to the STL and OPS 1.000 for the last 2 months of the season? Methinks the psychological blow to Mang would have been too great, that he would have felt like the organization wasn’t committed to winning.

and I think everyone was primed to see a smaller Brett Wallace because of Derrick Goold’s comments before the event.
And cherry picking one really bad body type who might be an average defender ignores all the guys who had to move to 1st because they couldn’t pick it at 3rd.
