Against Whom, When, & Where Will The Cards Play In The NLDS -- 9/30 Edition
Heading into the final handful of games, the clubs atop their respective National League divisions find themselves fairly bunched together. We have touched on it in the Daily Thread, but there exists a very real possibility that the Cardinals could open up the NLDS against any of the Dodgers, Phillies, Rockies, or Braves. As we all know, the club with the best overall record is the beneficiary of the vaunted "home-field advantage" (which the Cardinals did not enjoy even once in the storybook "Tigers In Three" postseason of Aught-Six). After ruminating on the prospect for a days, TLR has decided that the home-field advantage is, in fact, "important to him" (and Bill DeWitt undoubtedly does as it will help to add some more dollars to DeWallet as we head into the Holliday Hot Stove League).
As fans, we should all note that it increases the minimum number of games that the Cards host from one to two in the NLDS and from three to four in the NLCS. So, there are two extra games in Busch III that we could each conceivably attend, if the Cards were to secure home-field.
Last night, the Rockies won a game fraught with the tension one normally reserves only for October, and, in doing so, padded their Wild Card lead as the Braves went down to the Marlins in their own little barn-burner (if baseball has such things). The N.L. Wild Card standings, on this, the 30th day of September, have the Rockies ahead of the Braves by a full 3 games.
Meanwhile, in the interdivisional race for the League's Best Record, we all know that the Cardinals meandered their way through a listless 7-2 loss at the hands (bats, gloves, and arms) of Walt Jocketty's Reds. Jay Bruce made a cameo, whacking two homers. After all, that is what Jay Bruce does--hit home runs. Disconcerting was the fact that the GOB smited the VEB Community for even suggesting that Joel Pineiro was a top-10 Cy Young finalist, as they exorcised the Ghost of Christy Matthewson, and, in doing so, resurrected the zombie that is El Pinata (6 IP, 8 H, 3 HR, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO). On the bright side, we all saw that Matt Pagnozzi has the best chance to succeed by not swinging his MLB bat and that David Freese ought to get a few more chances to swing a MLB bat next season.
On the Left Coast, Torre's Dodgers fell unceremoniously to the AAAA Padres squad. "Chad Billingsley is now winless in his last seven starts," ESPN.com tells me. That makes me want to face him in the playoffs, because he's not a "winner." (Never mind the fact that Billingsley threw 6 innings and gave up 2 runs. I don't mention the 5 BB Billingsley issued because the Cards will aggressively not allow that to happen when/if we face the young fireballer.) Whether or not the thumpin' that the Phils gave the 'Stros earlier in the evening (by West Coast standards) had anything to do with the Dodgers' performance, we will never know. But a thumpin' it was, and this morning the Dodgers lead the Phillies by a mere 1.5 games and the Cardinals by a not insurmountable 2.5 games.
If the season ended today, the Dodgers would host the Cardinals in Chavez Ravine and the Phillies would host the Rockies in Citizens' Bandbox. However, bear in mind faithful reader that the Braves have four games remaining against the sorry Nats, and, the Phils don't leave the comfort of their cozy park until, possibly, after October 4th, so the situation remains fluid as to against whom and at what locale the Redbirds will be playing in the NLDS.
***Update***
As JD is Legend asks, "What does this mean date-wise?" And it's a very good question. Reading MLB.com's NLDS playoff schedule is a bit like reading heiroglyphics, but I'll give it a shot. There is "NLDS 'A,'" which "will feature a National League Division Winner vs. the NL Wild Card," according to the Official MLB site, and "NLDS 'B,"" which "will feature the two remaining Division Winners."
The schedule for NLDS A has times all as to be determined. The television network is TBS.
Game 1, Wednesday, Oct. 7
Game 2, Thursday, Oct. 8
Game 3, Saturday, Oct. 10
Game 4 (if needed), Sunday, Oct. 11
Game 5 (if needed), Tuesday, Oct. 13
The schedule for NLDS B has the same "TBD," will be televised on the same cable network, and the games will all be played on the same days.

Cool, nice summary.
Nice work! I’ll take bgh over Strauss, Burwell, or Gordo any day.
I am definitely okay with starting in LA. Our pair of aces in a pitcher’s park for Games 1 and 2? Sounds good to me.

You know the way the dates are set up right now?

I added this.
Both series will be played on the same days. All of the Divisional Series will be on TBS. The times are TBD.

Nice summary
The Cards lose the tiebreaker against the Phillies too, so including the tiebreaker, we are two games out of second seed, two and half out of first seed.
i'm holding out hope they all 3 finish with the same record
the cardinals get the one seed in that scenario.

as for the playoffs
unless something crazy happens, the rockies are going to hang on. three games back with five games to go does not bode well for the braves. obviously, they’re not eliminated, but it’s going to take a mini-miracle.
that takes philly out of the picture (thank god), but it’s still important that the cardinals try and get a better record than them for the nlcs. as for the first round, it’s looking more and more likely that it’s going to be the dodgers in la, as the cardinals are 2.5 out with only five games to play (2 back on the loss side, the dodgers are off tomorrow).

I didn't pick the Braves
but it would be fun if we played the Braves sometime because I bet I could get tickets since Braves fans won’t.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
+1
I could go see playoff baseball! And actually have a team I care about in the game!

I picked the Dodgers
Mostly because I have an irrational fear of Rocktober, and Wolf-Kershaw strikes me as not stacking up all that well against Carp-Waino in games one and two.
"Rocktober?"
Is that what ESPN, or, worse yet, the Rockies refer to the Rockies in the playoffs as?

Yo MLBPA, I'm really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but Albert is the most ridiculous player of all time. OF ALL TIME!
might as well make it Mattober
much as Of the Rose is a clubhouse glue kinda guy, it’s a bit much to name the month after him

Actually, I liked the phonetics of Marktober.
But who knows, perhaps he pulls a Weaver-esque October? I am trying to come up with a name for November… A World Series November thriller, anyone?
I want the Walrus back...

I picked the Dodgers because
that is the only team I have any confidence that the Cards could possibly beat right now.
I Picked the Rockies...
…just to slay the irrational dragon called Rocktober. Ubaldo Jimenez aside, I am not afraid of either De La Rosa or the hated, hated, HATED Jason Marquis. We should be able to beat Jimenez as well because his name has Baldo in it, which is simply not among the Favored Sports Names of Baseball. Plus if we have to go to Cowlorado I can see our new Bash Boys blast a few of ’em over the Flat Irons. The Bentancourt/Street combo has been pretty effective, so we need to score early and often. Call in the Battle of the Beer-Producing Cities (not including Milwaukee).

I too voted for the Rockies...
partly because they are about equals with LA in terms of “beatability” to me, partly because it means we host in the first round, but MOSTLY because it means that IF we face the Phils in the NLCS we play more games here than there…
Also bgh, minimum games at home for the NLCS stays at two regardless of whether we have “HFA”…maximum home games goes from 3 to 4.
"Don't do anything till I get back!" - Jesus to the Cubs
the main things that scare me about the Dodgers and Phillies are there lefty starters
but for some reason the Rox are more frightening to me… I guess because it seems they are on a win streak

It's pretty easy
You just add slightly more liquid to the pie crust dough. Might have to bake it longer too. The real challenge is that you have no atmospheric humidity, which sometimes helps it all to stick together better.

I was thinking in the event of a sweep.
But, as I write this, my NLCS is way off. The maximum goes from two to three in the NLDS with home-field and from three to four in the NLCS. Oh, bother.

Phillies
I am of the “let’s kick some ass and put the fear of GOB into the rest of the playoff teams” camp.
You can’t fear the Phillies, just like you can’t fear the GOB.

FUCK YEAH.
I still think we ought to be talking about what the Cards need to do to win, rather than ph33ring who might beat them.
Preparation. It’s important. Just like protection.

anyone know
if these post season games will be on mlb.tv?
i’m sure they’ll be blacked out (not like that’s an issue) if so, but i was wondering if it’ll be on there at all
Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.
they have been in the past
