Jeff Passan Thinks the Cards are Stealing Money from a Blind Kid...
This is a bad situation, make no mistake about it. Either the FO are being over-cautious and scraping together all the moolah they can get their hooves on (including, one presumes, diving for dimes udder the FO couches...) for Holliday/Pujols cowtracts, and they found a way to unceremoniously dump a promising young player
OR
The Cards really don't know what they're doing viz a vis scouting/medical reports, etc, in Latin America.
Frankly, neither option sounds appealing. We all want the next Albert Pujols: a superior player with no character issues who plays with heart, soul, AND talent, who just happens to pop up from our system with little or no fanfare. Close the barn door, that cow ain't a moo-in'. We're gonna have to scout and groom the Next Big Thing for the Cards, and that means spending moolah.
Now, I wouldn't go the drama queen extremes of Jeff Passan, but it does seem to me that the Cards FO is playing hardball lately, doesn't it? Unceremoniously dumping players like AK and Aaron Miles, trading away 'family' like C Dunc (a good moove there), and now voiding this kid's contract. In moost cases, these were good mooves. But even if the Wagner void is a good moove, what does that say about our folks in central/south America? Perhaps moore oversight is needed? Do we need a Scout Czar, to use Washington parlance, as a sort of Grand Poobah of scouting operations (presumably there already is one somewhere - I just love the idea of a Grand Poobah).
Ok, I think I hit my 75 word obligation. Anyway, what does everyone else think about the situation? Hiccup or harbinger of bad mooves to come?

Why?
He reported on a story that would have been reported the same as if the team all of a sudden became the Texas Rangers.
It’s a big deal. And I do not see a problem with the Cardinals (or the Rangers) negating the contract for medical reasons that are allowed.
So relax. It’s a story and was reported in the manner it should have been.

Um... no
His tone insinuated that the Cardinals were in the wrong for not giving this kid money.

This situation is media fodder.
Nothing more. Mateo didn’t pass his physical. The Cardinals voided his contract. Trevor Miller didn’t pass his physical and they did the same thing in Spring Training. Where was the outrage there.
This makes a nice narrative for writers but the next time the Cardinals offer millions of dollars to a kid in Latin America, guess what? He’s still going to take the money.

if you bought a car with a damaged transmission
you would get your money back…i hate to de-value a human being like that, but that is how the International player pool works
maybe there is more to it than just an eye problem…but we have to take the cardinals at face value and believe what they are saying

It is worth considering
whether the Cardinals’ reputation will be sullied enough that we wouldn’t get the access that other clubs are offered. Overblown media outrage can do real damage.
Guys like Bradley are exactly why we can't have a pumpkin patch anymore.

That was alleged a year ago
and the Cardinals landed Roberto de la Cruz.
Frankly, the Cardinals haven’t produced a serious prospect out of the region yet so if we’re going to question anything, let’s question the scouting for that area and not the voided contract.

He certainly will be
and as much as he’s likely to be in mine, a potential closer as the only real product of Latin America strikes me as a weak feather in Luhnow’s cap. (PS – Adam Reifer was in a lot of top lists last year too. Relief prospects are just as fickle as relievers in the majors.)

Passan...
is seemingly always looking for an opening to make the Cardinals organization look bad. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with him being from KC, but it’s getting old at this point. This story is sad all around. There is no need to make anyone out to look like the bad guy. Also, he made an error when he said that the Cards can use the $3 mil to sign either Holliday or DeRosa. Poor journalism…
Any idiot would know that.

As usual.....
The taking money from a blind kid quote…….hello he failed a physical that was part of guaranteeing the contract. Like I said in one of the game threads…It would be nice to see him get a flyer by someone…..but if he’s blind in 5 yrs, what’s the point of investing money into someone that will never see a ML club.

not to mention that that line is absurd
Taking money from the blind kid that told you that he was a baseball phenom? When that money was the money he was getting to play baseball?
Not to mention that having 20/30 vision ≠ blind.

for all we know, it's a degenerative conditon
that is nothing now, but will have him being unable to play baseball in three years. The actual physical hasn’t been released.

this is bullshit
i logged onto my internet this morning and this was the first thing i saw. i was utterly disgusted. this kind of shit happens all the time, but this asshole chooses the cardinals to bash because they “took money from a blind kid.” get real. they never “took” anything. the contract was never guaranteed, and it was assumed that he would have to pass a physical. guess what? he didn’t. so he doesn’t get the money.

perhaps if he is such a good Samaritan Passan could hire the kid or maybe Yahoo could put him on staff…
Its the Cards here, not Cardinal Care, why would anyone give that kind of money to an “injured” player?
supposedly specifics about the injury will come out tomorrow.
Its funny Passan rushed to publish this piece with such an obvious slant before the facts have come out, maybe he is right but, but does he know what he is even talking about yet?

Passan is a hack
He undoubtedly has some grudge against the Cardinals and their fans. The “swooped in and took money from a blind kid.” comment is the kind of crap that you’d hear on talk radio. If he’s truly blind (or at risk of blindness), then the cardinals had every right to withdraw there money. If some other team wants to risk there money on Mateo then he’s free to sign with them. They aren’t holding him hostage. To characterize the cards decision as sort of malevolent scheme to ruin some poor life is borderline libelous.
by _pistol_ on Sep 25, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Passan's a hack, and this article smells of opinion and not fact,
but it does get at a larger point that I think a lot of us are missing here:
How much is this situation going to impact the Cardinal organization as it tries to sign Latin American players in the future?
Are we now going to have to overpay for kids because of situations like this? This may cost us much more money in the long run because we’re going to have to pay a premium for talent because agents are going to push kids away from our organization due to them “stealing money from a blind kid”.
From what I understood initially, the physical was a slam dunk that Mateo had a degenerative condition in his right eye and that it wasn’t correctable by surgery or corrective lenses. I’ve now googled it and found other reports that state the physical was “inconclusive” and they don’t reference Passan’s article, so that can’t be where they’re getting it. I guess we’ll see how bad it was if and when some other team signs Mateo and how well he does as he gets older.
