The Obscure St. Louis Cardinals
A Daily Mail article about fake Twitter accounts provides a gem about Tony La Russa a few paragraphs in: "Twitter has decided to act after Tony La Russa, the coach of an obscure American baseball team, launched a legal action over a fake account."
"Obscure"??? Seriously? The second most WS title of all time? The team that employs Albert Pujols, nigh-universally acknowledged as the sport's best player? Is Chelsea obscure because they're not Manchester? Is Italy an obscure national team because they've won fewer World Cups than Brazil?
So much for the "special relationship" between our countries. I hold Felonius Monk personally responsible for this outrage.

This is absurd!
How could they get this so wrong? Surely, there is at least one American on The Daily Mail’s staff that could be asked about the St. Louis Cardinals. But, more to the point, how could any MLB club be considered “obscure?” Every single team has an ESPN highlight every night (provided they play that day). A minor-league team is obscure. This would be like the Washington Times calling any Premiere League club “obscure” (even Hull City). It makes no sense. This bothers me far more than it probably should, but it is poor journalism.
Furthermore, he is a “manager,” not a “coach,” and the Cardinals are a “National League Baseball Club,” not a mere “team.” (I know we all use “club” and “team” interchangeably and it really doesn’t matter, but it is analogous to the Premiere League’s structure, for goodness sake.)

It was analogize The Daily Mail to The Washington Times.

Well, I have tried to form an equivalent for the purpose of argument
I think if an American newspaper called one of the more small-market or historically un-great teams “obscure” it would at least be forgivable, just kind of blunt and unnecessary. So if the Post called Hull City or Tottenham or something “obscure” it would make some sense. But if they called Liverpool obscure it wouldn’t make sense, at least not to me. If the story was about the manager of the Royals or the Diamondbacks, then “obscure” might be OK, especially since this is a British newspaper writing for a British audience. I just can’t accept that the Cardinals are obscure.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

And the world thinks Americans are dumb for not caring about soccer.
Seriously, I do not follow soccer at all, and even I know that this would be like calling Liverpool or Arsenal “obscure.” (Clearly, Man U has to be the Yankees.)

Cards Aren't Obscure
They have been around since the 19th century and have won more World Series than any other NL club. The Cardinals have had a huge fan base in middle America going back to all the years they were on KMOX radio with Harry Caray and Jack Buck announcing. There aren’t many clubs less “obscure” than the Cardinals.
The Yankees and Dodgers would be on that list. I put the Dodgers on that list because they have always played in big markets and been in so many World Series. One could maybe throw in the Red Sox and Cubs. The Red Sox have had recent success. The Cubs are well known because of their championship drought and play in a big market. Those two are debatable. The Cardinals aren’t obscure.

My current theory
The writer was looking up info about the various Twitter stories, and came upon La Russa’s. “Hm, the Saint Louis Cardinals? Never heard of them,” the writer thought to himself. Therefore nobody else on my ancient isle has heard of them either.

I love, love, love Ian McShane
but I just couldn’t get into that show. I really wanted to though. Although part of the reason is that by the time the second episode aired I heard that it was already on the chopping block.

The Daily Mail is not the pinnacle of journalism excellence.

Ted Keith...
just mentioned this article in his weekly MLB Power Rankings (of which I usually enjoy reading). I think this needs more play…The Daily Mail is a bit of a joke, but still…OBSCURE?! Also, Jack Dorsey throws like a woman…

Any idiot would know that.
