The slider has been sooooo inconsistent

since he’s been in STL. If he can throw it with any degree of regularity he’ll be very good. Still needs something to keep lefties off him though.

I like his changeup better than his FB actually

But I think coming out of the pen his slider is much better at 85-87 than it was 80-84.

by joker24 on Sep 20, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

When I watched him in the minors

he had a breaking pitch that was more curve than slider and it was very good. He’s got several different looks to his pitches but he doesn’t seem to have quite the command as a starter.

Yeah

Looking at the PITCHf/x it looks like more of a power curve based on the spin axis. It’s always been a little slurvy but I tend to call anything that isn’t clearly a curveball a slider.

by gdm426 on Sep 20, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't agree with that

I’ve seen nothing to suggest that people often slide that far out of the baseline and the umps fail to call it. And most of the time the infielder converts the DP anyway, so the point is moot and the call isn’t made.

Guys slide away from the base all the time, true, but most of the time they stay in what one could call a generalized arms-reach of second. But Holliday was, as guayzimi said, egregiously far away from second.

ok, fine whatever

pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels

by gdm426 on Sep 20, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

and on those 2 or 3 times

the ss clears the runner and completes the play, thus there is no need for the call. It is only when the slide causes a misplay like hollidays that you will see the call.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

this is my usual schtick

but nearly every comment in the gt’s got jacked by the GOBs. it’s kind of fascinating. other than new-member chatter. some of the broadcast, too.

however mostly i am bummed that Boog had an off-day and couldn’t make up for Skip, and also Boog was not avenged.

i don't even want to know, anymore, what's up with Luddy

he’s got to step up if Albert and Legoman falter or are walked.

Boog wasn’t moving well on his feet. not as he usually does.

we’re joking about it, but I wonder if the walk-off celebration did catch him somewhere.

Ludwick had that one beast game in Pittsburgh

but thats it since July. It’s worrisome

I really want to complain about Ludwick's

hitting as of late and is recent bad at bats but that wouldn’t be very nice and I like Luddy.

Might be a tough road trip this week. The Astros always play us tough in Houston and we haven’t had a lot of luck in Denver either. The bright spot is we get to play the Reds.

I am still not thinking this offense is clicking the way it should. I just hope they work out the kinks the next couple of weeks and the bats catch fire in October. The “LOBs” are really hurting us…got to remedy this soon.
