Interview with former Cardinal blogger Brian Gunn

Longtime St. Louis Cardinals fans might be interested in checking out a recent interview I had with Brian Gunn, the proprietor of the late, great Redbird Nation blog from the 2003-04 seasons. I was feeling nostalgic on the five year anniversary of that amazing team and sent out an e-mail to Brian, and he was kind enough to reply with some great answers to my questions. I know for me, Redbird Nation led me to all kinds of new corners of Web-based baseball analysis, and proved a trailblazer for sites like Viva El Birdos, which are such strong communities today.

If anything, it just shows that at least one good thing has come from a Blogspot site! The interview is at:

That said Brian Gunn! Got me into Cardinals blogging, he did.

Where is the summary of what is appropriate for a fanpost (vs fanshot)?

I’ve certainly seen people enforce the standard enough to know what is expected, but I can’t find the description in the guidelines.

Thanks

Can we post these so that they are easier to find?

I don’t expect many VEB readers have visited beyond the box score.

The second link, by Chuckb, isn’t linked on the front page of VEB that I could see. Did I miss seeing a link on the front page?

I recommend placing a link to Chuckb’s post asap. The community grows and turnovers quickly enough to assume everyone has read it.

I agree

We’ve been trying to get dan et al to post a few more things to the recurring front page. That’s one that’s well overdue.

Great Fan Post...

…for the Cardinal community that moved to VEB from Redbird Nation when Brian hung up the spikes (keyboard) at too young an age.

Redbird nation made the magical 2004 season less mysterious but even more magical.

Thanks for posting the interview.

THAT Brian Gunn?

Wait…the guy who did Redbird Nation is THAT Brian Gunn? Former brother-in-law of Pam from The Office? Brother of Kirk from Gilmore Girls? Oh my, this is an awesome find-out. And a great flashback to 2004; one of my most vivid memories from that season was the post in late July or August where he commented that it seemed the Cardinals were winning “every. damn. day.” We’re there again, and it’s everything I hoped it would be.

It's a fanshot

not a fanpost b/c the interview was posted from another site. It’s not a VEB original interview; it’s a link to an interview somewhere else. It’s a good interview and a good link but it belongs in the fanshot section. It doesn’t diminish the content or quality to call it a fanshot vs. a fanpost.

by chuckb on Sep 3, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chuckb

Can you post your community fanpost guidelines somewhere permanent, prominent, and proximate to the fanpost/fanshot area? The one Yadi2second posted above:

http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/2009/1/6/710121/community-fanpost-guidelin

If he had posted his interview at VEB exclusively (i.e., “inside” a fan post, with no duplication elsewhere), then it would qualify as a fan post?

www.mpgillusion.com

by ncgostl on Sep 3, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To answer my own question

The “original interview” versus “not original” is in the Sky Kalkman link at Beyond the Box Score, not in Chuckb’s guide.

I think we need to use some VEB space to cut and paste Sky’s distinction in an obvious spot. Maybe the key ideas in Chuckb’s post could be summarized and added to it.

The only reason why I’m pushing on this is because it is a daily thing.

www.mpgillusion.com

by ncgostl on Sep 3, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's really quite simple:

If it’s a link or a picture or some quick note, it’s a fanshot.

If it’s something original that you wrote and/or developed and (hopefully) took more than thirty minutes on, it’s a fanpost. Think of fanposts as you auditioning to write for the front page.

Shut up, Fritz™.

by Alxfritz on Sep 3, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand

But can we share these simple rules prominently for others?

www.mpgillusion.com

by ncgostl on Sep 3, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

FYI

If you go to the welcome link at the top left of VEB, this is what it says:

FanPosts – In Your Own Words

Every community encourages you to write your own blog posts. We call them FanPosts. If you have something to say about a trade, a game, a coach or last night’s lousy lineup, take a few moments and express your thoughts in a FanPost. Once your FanPost is published to the blog’s homepage, other blog members can recommend and respond to it.

I don’t think that aligns well with the actual VEB expectations.

www.mpgillusion.com

by ncgostl on Sep 3, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with nc

(if I may call you nc)

in the sense that these guidelines are not at all visible from the front page. It mires the community in arguing points of conduct when most members cannot find the actual ruling set forth by the mods.

A rough draft

Yadi2second—thanks for weighing in.

Here’s a rough draft synthesizing Chuckb, Sky Kalkman, and Alxfritz’s summary above. Maybe space can be created for something like this immediately above the fanposts on the front page? This could be posted as a fanpost right now as an interim guide before something permanent is put on the front:

“When to use fanposts or fanshots:

A fanpost should be an original, unpublished analysis based on data and logic. During the offseason and heavy trade periods (e.g., July), a single fanpost will be created each week to collect all trade-related discussions.

A fanshot can be used for a variety of other posts, including a short thought, a picture, a video, or a link to an external article or source. "

www.mpgillusion.com

by ncgostl on Sep 3, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but that's what people are reading and thinking what a fanpost is

if you get someone from another sbnation site, that’s what they would expect a fanpost to be.

but this is ridiculous, arguing over what a fanpost or fanshot should be.

+1

I considered making the Glossary a fanshot, for pity’s sake.

The thing is, as I said before, lots of our rules and standards have not been updated to accessible parts of the site. It needs to happen. Like, yesterday. This is a [GOB-redacted] run, and VEB is going to get a lot more traffic. We already have an influx of new posters.

Let's do something about it

Alxfritz—you’re on the board that oversees infractions of the community guidelines.

Can you help get something like the short draft I posted above somewhere where people can actually see it?

I agree with spants that VEB can and should have higher standards.

But I also agree with Yadi2second that it needs to be clear, especially to new folks. The SBNation standards are the first things people see.

Let’s do something constructive. Way too much time is spent on a) “nailing people” for not following the hard-to-find norms and b) drawing distinctions…….

Great Stuff - Thanks

Brian Gunn and Redbird Nation made me care about blogs; when it shut down it was like a friend had died.

By the way, hats off to Viva El Birdos. I started lurking here in 2005 but I’ve been away awhile and I can’t get over how this site has EXPLODED. The growth might be hard for some of you who are here every day to grasp. Great stuff.

I would have put this in FanPosts too.
