is it possible for a HR to be an error?

wierd question I know. Today just got me thinking. What if a ball is hit, front end of the warning track, easily playable, and someone jumps to catch it, and somehow palms it 15 feet over the wall? It’s a round-tripper, but does it always count against the pitcher for FIP purposes, is it ALWAYS a dinger? And, if it is possible for it to be scored an error, has it happened? Every scenario i’ve ever seen when someone’s “helped” a ball over the wall it’s been ruled a dong.

From the MLB Official Rulebook :
Rule 6.09 (h) Any fair fly ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over the fence into foul territory, in which case the batter shall be entitled to advance to second base; but if deflected into the stands or over the fence in fair territory, the batter shall be entitled to a home run. However, should such a fair fly be deflected at a point less than 250 feet from home plate, the batter shall be entitled to two bases only.

alternatively, ask current Dallas soccer coach Steve Morrow

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Morrow

Morrow started the League Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday; after falling behind to a John Harkes goal, Arsenal equalised through Paul Merson, and then Merson set up Morrow to score the winner (which was also his first goal for the club). In the celebrations after the match, Arsenal skipper Tony Adams attempted to pick up Morrow and parade him on his shoulders, but Adams slipped and Morrow awkwardly hit the ground. He broke his arm and had to be rushed to hospital…..

As a result, Morrow missed the rest of that season….

Morrow was fit enough by the start of the next season but played fewer matches (only 13, as opposed to 25 the previous season)……

Etc etc. Lost a big chunk of his career (he was a late developer).

yup.

part of what could arguably one of the worst years for sports in any city. it’s easy to miss when media leaves Seattle out almost always, but . . .

- Mariners go from a contender to worst team in the league
- UW goes winless
- WSU has one win
- Seahawks totally fall apart after being a playoff team the year before
- David Stern / Clay Bennett steal Supersonics

Actually, I take that back. ESPN did a write-up on it, but of course, it was only on their website.

With that said, WOO-HOO! It’s an all new year! Take that, USC.

Rosenthal

citing the Cards’ mysterious difficulties with lefties, singled out the Dodgers as the most difficult task for the Cardinals in post-season, because of the one-two pucnh of Wolf and Kershaw.
Like, that’s more troublesome than the Phillies’ Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels?
Also, would the Phils consider using the ageless wonder, Jamie Moyer, as a third starter?

no third catcher

in the mix. I guess Tony will split the games between Yadi and LaRue with LaRue taking two of the three Houston games, Yadi taking possibly all three Colorado games and LaRue taking two of the Cincy games and Yadi closing out the season with the starters during the Milwaukee games. This keeps Yadi catching for Carp, Waino and Pineiro.

On another note, Wallace wasn’t one of the three players called up by the A’s. Beane is probably didn’t want to impact Brett’s value as a future trade chip or give Brett any time toward Super Two status.

Note that list was not official

just those mentioned in the past or generally thought to get a shot. I hope it is those four. The last week of the season Craig or Freese should be at 3B everyday to give us an idea of what we might have for next year. Seeing one, or both, of them have some success would sure make for an easier decision on Glaus.
