Comparing Cards' Champs

With the regular season nearing an end, I thought that now would be a pretty good time to take a look at the ’09 team in comparison w/ the ’04, ’05, and ’06 teams. How good is this team compared to the 100-win teams or the team that won the World Series? I compared the main hitters on the 4 teams by wOBA, UZR/150, and WAR. I compared th pitchers using FIP and WAR. For players who came over mid-season, I used their full season numbers so that we could more accurately compare the quality of the players rather than the amount of their contributions to the team.

The 2004 Cardinals:

Pos Player wOBA/FIP UZR/150 WAR
C Matheny .273 0.4
1B Pujols .439 3.6 7.9
2B Womack .330 4.9 2.8
SS Renteria .312 0.4 1.9
3B Rolen .421 22.1 8.8
LF Sanders .341 10.3 2.2
CF Edmonds .436 1.3 8.1
RF Walker .432 0.7 3.2
SP1 Carp 3.85 3.2
SP2 Morris 4.93 1.1
SP3 Williams 4.10 2.7
SP4 Suppan 4.77 1.3
SP5 Marquis 4.55 1.9
MR Kline 3.68 0.5
SU Tavarez 2.92 1.3
CL Izzy 3.02 1.1
Total WAR 48.4

The ’05 Cardinals:

Pos Player wOBA/FIP UZR/150 WAR
C Molina .282 0.9
1B Pujols .436 1.0 7.7
2B Grudz .321 9.9 3.0
SS Eckstein .335 -3.6 3.4
3B Rolen .308 21.7 1.5
LF Sanders .384 -5.5 2.1
CF Edmonds .386 9.7 5.9
RF Walker .382 -12.2 2.0
SP1 Carp 2.90 6.8
SP2 Morris 3.99 2.7

SP4 Suppan 4.53 1.5
SP5 Marquis 4.95 0.7
MR Reyes 3.12 1.1
SU Tavarez 4.01 0.3
CL Izzy 3.60 0.7
Total WAR 42.5

And now for the World Champs:

Pos Player wOBA/FIP UZR/150 WAR
C Molina .261 -0.2
1B Pujols .448 4.5 7.7
2B Belliard .313 -0.8 1.3
SS Eckstein .310 -0.6 1.5
3B Rolen .373 14.4 5.6
LF Duncan .399 -7.5 2.0
CF Edmonds .350 7.6 2.6
RF Encarnacion .320 7.1 1.1
SP1 Carp 3.44 5.2
SP2 Suppan 4.70 1.7
SP3 Weaver 5.47 0.5
SP4 Mulder 6.01 -0.4
SP5 Marquis 5.90 -0.6
MR Looper 3.46 1.0
SU Wainwright 3.31 1.1
CL Izzy 5.70 -1.0
Total WAR 29.1

How in the hell did that team win the World Series? Especially when the others didn’t!

And this year’s Cards (all numbers are to date and are not final – duh!)

Pos Player wOBA/FIP UZR/150 WAR
C Molina .331 2.9
1B Pujols .460 0.8 8.2
2B Skip .335 -6.9 1.0
SS Ryan .317 14.4 3.0
3B DeRosa .330 -6.8 1.6
LF Holliday .391 2.1 5.0
CF Rasmus .320 14.0 2.6
RF Ludwick .341 1.0 1.9
SP1 Carp 2.75 5.1
SP2 Wainwright 3.25 4.9
SP3 Pineiro 3.02 5.0
SP4 Lohse 4.57 0.7
SP5 Wellemeyer 5.26 -0.1
MR Miller 3.48 0.4
SU McClellan 4.18 0.1
CL Franklin 3.27 0.9
Total WAR 43.2

back in days of yore...
“It’s not always the best team, the best pitching staff or the best offense that wins the World Series,” said Edmonds, “but the best team playing in October. That was us. We finally got healthy for the first time since April. We got our confidence once we made the playoffs. And look what happened.”
“We were bad at the end of the season, there isn’t any doubt about it,” Rolen said. “A lot of people said we backed into the playoffs, and I have no resentment to that. But we didn’t have to prove anything to anybody. We barely made the playoffs, and we turned around and played as good baseball as we could play, and ended up being the world champions.”
“A couple years ago,” Edmonds said, “we were just excited to get in the World Series. And I think from the first pitch of the first game of the playoffs [this year], we started talking about being focused long enough to get through this situation and not get a little out of control every time we won a series. After the National League Championship Series, I was really impressed with how everybody handled the situation and gathered it up and got it under control quickly.”

I still can’t find Scotty’s quote about how 2004 was the best team he’d played in, but that’s what I was goin’ for.

What's sad..

is you know Scotty wishes he was still with the Cards with another chance to play in October. Knowning the player he is…he is really missing the success that he had as a teammate with the Cardinals and had not been on a winning team since. It’s a shame he and Tony couldn’t bury the hachet and move on.

Yeah, Cubs fan def wrote this

But I don’t think he was being a homer (except the Cubs “inexplicably slipped” part).

He makes a VALID and IMPORTANT point about being results oriented, however, he uses poor cause/effect skills to make that point. I think there are way to many variables to consider that moving Skip to 2nd was a incorrect move.

LaRussa was probably counting on a lot of things to keep him there…ex. Dick and Dunk’s “inexplicably slip”. Did Skip lose value from being a 3rd/4th OF to starting 2B? Probably. Did it make the team lose value? Doubtful.

"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"

by rocKStark5 on Sep 17, 2009 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Skip to 2B was a valuable move

They knew he would suck at first but he has already exceeded my goals. I honestly believed at the end of the season he would be a negative 25 runs on defense. He is going to be our 2B next year also.

by FlimtotheFlam on Sep 17, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

ya i don't mind the move at all

the authors point was he has a good chance at being less valuable as a PLAYER to be at 2B (the OP even brings up sample size and it’s possible he may not be that bad), however my point is he is prolly more valuable to the TEAM at 2B than at OF.

I just don’t like the OP’s theory this would cause the card’s 1st place in any other year but this year.

The only slightly disappointing thing about Schu>2B

is that he’s been a bit below-par with the bat. I think he’s been more or less all we could’ve expected with the glove. With a RHB to platoon with the couple of days a week we face LHP, I feel like we’ve more or got league-average production out of 2B, which is all we could’ve hoped. I just wish he’d turned into the 10+HR guy he looked like he might become.

have a healthy amount of fear and respect for the Cardinals. Like in Mallrats when Brody wishes that a child playing on an escalator will learn his lesson – Cubs fans have learned theirs.

by airhad on Sep 17, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I take great issue with this stupid comment
The NL Central of ‘09 is nothing like the NL Central of last year. The Cubs inexplicably slipped,

It’s hardly “inexplicable” – the Cubs failed to keep all 9 starting position players and all 5 starting pitchers fit for 85%+ of the season (that level of “lack of injury” only comes around once in a blue moon), and they traded away some of their good players for bad players at the start of the season. And they’re all one year older and one year more banged up. I thought they’d win 90 this year but, realistically, they were never going to sniff 100 again without another insanely lucky season.

Still, other than that, it’s a pretty reasonable article, IMO.

Soriano's performance alone resulted in a 4 win swing.

Aramis has been less than half as valuable thanks to injury. The swing from Derosa to Bradley is 2.5 wins. These were more than enough to overshadow nice work from Wells, a really good season from Lee, and decent pitching otherwise.

the fact that Skip was so bad defensively....

earlier in the year should be accorded no weight in assessing the value of the decision now. As of today, and heading into the playoffs, we have the 2baseman Skip currently is, not what he was in April and May.

If we weren’t going to playoffs and the Skip decision played a part, then this analysis would be worth something. One day perhaps people can better incorporate “analysis” with the ability to do math.

I dunno even if Boog & Pin were lucky

one was a player with a good work ethic working hard enough to be a borderline-major-league hitter when we always knew his defence was good enough to be a high-end MIFer, and the other was a guy who learnt a new pitch, bought into the organisational pitching philosophy 100%, and reaped the rewards. They’re both internal products, more or less, and examples of the organisation doing a good job of sticking with (and helping improve) the talent on its own books.

An analogous situation might’ve been the Cubs holding onto Jose Ceda and working to turn him into the production they’ve got from Kevin Gregg this year, without spending the money or wasting the cheap years. They’ve often gone for external solutions and executed poorly, whilst we’ve often gone for internal ones that’ve worked out quite well.

this is a pretty good at-a-glance comparison, chuck

but it’s probably a bit unfair in a couple of ways – it seems unreasonable to give Holliday 5 WAR this year when 3 of them came in Oakland (and the left fielders in his stead were basically replacement-level), and it also seems slight cherry-picking to only include 9 position players (in 2006 Speez was nearly a 2-win player, IIRC), 5 starters (this year Boggs and Smoltz have added more than 1 win between them) and only 3 relievers. Maybe just cataolguing the team’s “total WAR” each year from FanGraphs would be a better way to look at it.

Still, it’s pretty cool that our current lineup could end up with a WAR total similar to 2004. Viva!

I used

basically only the starters and the full-season totals for the additions to get a sense of how good the players who were playing were at the end of the season, not how productive they had been for the team all year. How good does this year’s team, right now, stack up w/ the ‘04, ’05, and ’06 teams. Counting Holliday as a 2 win player understates how good he is, though it’s an accurate measure of how much he’s contributed to this year’s team. It’s also perhaps misleading to count Izzy as the ‘06 closer since he didn’t close for the team in the playoffs, or counting Mulder as part of that rotation instead of Reyes. Reyes, btw, had more IP for the Cards that year than Weaver but fewer than Mulder…barely. It’s not meant to be a perfect measure, just a prompt for discussion.

It was not Hee Seop Choi who caused Scott Rolen’s injury, it was Scott Erickson’s inability to throw the ball accurately to 1st base from FIFTEEN FEET AWAY. He had an effin 6 ERA why was he even in the big leagues.

I think he can possibly put himself into the "arguable/fringe" category by the time he calls it quits.

Not to lean too much on WAR for evaluating everything, but it’s a nice snapshot; baseballprojection has him at close to 60 WAR already. If he can maintain his current groove for a couple more years, put together some 3-4 WAR seasons, then who knows.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

by mattybobo on Sep 17, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

his main problem is that a huge chunk of his value is defence

his hitting stats aren’t really going to cry out “HOF”, even if he does have some sort of resurgence. Of course, the fact that (like Edmonds) he’s RECOGNISED by the wider dumbass baseball public as a great defender (with all those GGs) might help him, but I still don’t see him making it, sadly.

If that's in your drip coffee,

you’re getting a ton of caffeine. Tip: lighter roasts have more caffeine than darker roasts. No one thinks this is true, but it is. If that’s with espresso, that’s a latte, or a mocha b/c of the chocolate. Still has caffeine, but not nearly as much as coffee.

My wife loves tequila and used to drink it straight or with ice back in college. I’ll bet she’d be interested in trying some quality stuff…
I also discovered pisco recently which is fun.

Ah yes... the non-white whites.

My parents moved out here 50 yrs ago last month. When they got here, there was no running water in the house and a cistern outside for water with a pitcher pump in the house. So they drilled a well and ran water in the house.

Mom had grown up elsewhere and moved here, and evidently never dealt with iron-laden water before. The first time she washed a load of whites and used hot water the whole load turned orange…she just sat down and cried.

Which, of course, reminds me of my all-time favorite Cards/Cubs joke

What’s the difference between the Cards and Cubs? Why, we’ve won a World Series in our new stadium, and they haven’t!

Never gets old, friends. Never. Gets. Old.

by airhad on Sep 17, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I originally heard it in '06

In a flipped-around version, of course. (What do the Cards and Cubs have in common? Neither’s won a WS in their new stadium.) That, of course, lasted all of one year, so I just altered it to fit reality. I think it’s even funnier now, personally.

There's also this classic (which I'm sure everybody has already heard)

What do the World Series and a neutered grizzly have in common? No cubs!

My goodness but Rick Ankiel has been horrible this year

I hadn’t looked at his line for the season but he’s posted a .233/.285/.392 slash line for a .289 wOBA. What’s more disgusting is that he’s done that in 376 PAs. Need another example of TLR’s inability to properly evaluate players? Why does he have 376 PAs??? WHY WHY WHY? This is like Aaron Miles in CF.

Rolen is frickin brilliant when healthy

Those combined numbers have got to be one of the best, if not the best, for a third baseman in a single season. Brooks Robinson had some better years on defense, but he was mostly an average hitter except when he won MVP in ‘64. Schmidt never hit .300. Boggs and Brett were hitting machines, but fielding was very average. I don’t know who else pre-1960 to compare.

I assume you mean the combination of awesome offense and awesome defense?

Cause there is this little-known third baseman for the Yankees… but his best years as a 3B combine awesome hitting with just OK fielding.

Well, I put it that way for two reasons

One, fangraphs and the CHONE guy’s WAR have different values because they’re calculated differently, so I wanted to allow for some variance. Also, I put it as 6 instead of 7 or 8 because 2002 did in fact happen. Fangraphs has his 2002 total at 6.1, baseballprojection.com has it at 5.8. That’s his worst year, therefore his only real “down” year.

My take from this

Starting pitching, starting pitching, starting pitching. The ‘04 offense was absolutely insane…but the starters weren’t world-beaters, and lost the best of the bunch (Carp) before the postseason as well. Same deal in ’05, with the exception of Carp going for crazy good numbers. ’06: Yeah, the same thing, with worse offense, except once the playoffs hit, Weaver and Soup pitched way above their heads. (And, as an additional help, Yadi hit WAY the heck better than a -.2 WAR guy.)

So, I guess the upshot of this all is, it’s much better to have three starters at 5 WAR all season than to hope like heck that they start pitching like 5 WAR starters in the postseason.

well, hopefully it's a good time to go into a slump

and then start to go on a winning streak at the end of the season. if the cards won in ‘06, with that roster, proves something, I think. it’s more about who is winning at the time than about anything else, eh?

I've been mulling

over writing a fanpost on Cards’ Septembers under LaRussa because they’ve had some pretty futile Septembers in years’ past. However, some of the best September records (2000 to 2002) seemed to fizzle in the playoffs.

My guess is, yes they are slumping…slumping like a fox.

he'll be worth more than that by WAR

you can pretty much book it. However, the question is whether our two internal options (Freese and, to a lesser extent, Craig) can provide something similar for the league minimum, and allow us to spend that money on Holliday/pitching. We’re not replacing a replacement-level player with DeRo, most likely, we’re probably replacing someone who’s 1-2 WAR. So, he’s probably not quite worth the candle, in the end.

I’d still like to offer him arby, though – I feel if there’s maybe a 50% chance of him accepting then we get free draft pick(s) half the time, and the other half the time we get a versatile player who’ll probably be worth a bit more than he earns (even though it’ll block our internal options). Overall, that’s a +EV gamble (as they say in the poker world).

I like pretty much all styles of beer I've ever tried

Even slightly odd stuff like rauchbeer (smoked beer, which I love) and even some Lambic brews (which tend to be almost unbearably bitter if they’re not fruit-based) but I think I’ve got to an age and a stage in my beer-drinking life where I’ve probably got to admit, I’m just not that into hefeweizen. I’ve tried a fair few, and I actually used to really enjoy it when I first got into european-style beers, but nowadays, it just doesn’t do it for me. That slightly oily, banana flavour just doesn’t sit with the slightly tangy fizz, and ultimately I’d rather be drinking something else.

Mind you, I quite like the darker-hued ones brewed by Schneider-Weisse, I must admit they’re not bad.

i love the hefeweizen

I’m with you in that I tend to like most styles I try. My buddy who is way more knowledgeable than me introduced me to non-fruit lambics. Very weird at first, but very interesting too. I’ve gotta try rauchbeer. Smoked anything is pretty good in my opinion.

Yeah, Kolsch shouldn't be that hoppy

methinks the dude was doing it wrong. If anything, it should be slightly sweet and “rounded” or smooth-tasting for a lager-style beer. Should be some hops in there but not at all bitter hops and nowhere near as strong as, say, IPA or something. As far as I’m aware, it should be less bitter and hoppy than stuff like pilseners and the czech-influenced beers.

clearly the Amelie prequel

where you learn about her pre-Amelie experience with butterflies, while she was going by the name Irene.

Eventually they’ll also come out with the rest of the series:

- Amelie and the Curious Case of the Wooden Spoon

I got into a debate at work today:

If you were getting sentenced to life in prison w/out parole, would you try to kill yourself or not?

For me, there’s no way I’m going to prison just to eventually die. I’d rather just die and not live through however many years of ass rapes and awfulness.

My co-worker thinks it’d be worth going in and trying to be a prison baddass and living fifty plus years running the joint, yet, of course, dieing eventually anyway.

I still say killing yourself and avoiding the chance you may be ass raped is the way to go, especially since we’ll all die in the end anyway…

Couple draft nuggets

Aaron Crow finally signed with the Royals. 3M Major League deal incentives for 4.5M—-Nats offered 3.5 minor league deal (payable in 2 years tops→much higher NPV than the guaranteed 3M) jus’ sayin.

BA’s 2nd rated prospect LSU pitcher Anthony Ranaudo went with Boras as his “adviser” to go with #1 rated Harper at the very least. Good or bad, Boras is owning the draft to the degree that it could have a significant impact on MLB happenings once all these guys filter to the big leagues/free agency.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Sep 17, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Crow made a bad choice

and lost a year of development, coaching, progress and earning his way up the chain. Poor decision making. Poor advice.

by airhad on Sep 17, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

His worst choice IMO was letting it get out that his number is/was 4M last year

You just can’t do that and Hendricks really screwed up on that.

I really can’t blame him for not signing with the Nats: a premier college pitcher costs 4-6 million, Crow/Hendricks floated “out of the box” i.e. 4-6 million as his number before the draft, the Nats drafting him knowing he’s a premier college pitcher who wants 4-6 million……..therefore they’re only willing to go to 3.5? Aside from getting less money, who wants to play in an organization that won’t even pay the going (discounted!!!) rate for someone of his ilk. Thinking about it, I can’t even say in retrospect he should have signed on to be in an org that is that shitty.

But when he let it get out that 4M was the number it took, he doomed himself in these negotiations. Why would the Royals, with all the leverage, offer him exactly what he wants? Is he really gonna sit out another year over a few hundred grand again? They’ve gotta keep the specific drop dead number vague so his price tag is still 4-6M this year in order to actually give yourself a shot of getting 4+ guaranteed.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Sep 17, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

leverage

is lost when you reveal your bottom line. You also have a good point about the Nats being shortsighted over $500k.

Still, without knowing the deets, hard to knock the Royals.
