We'll see how the math looks in a week and a half.

Pretty much the only comfort as the Cubs are 10-5 in September and the Cardinals are 8-6.

The Cubs have an absolute cupcake schedule the rest of the way, as St. Louis offers up Lohse (or whoever) on Friday; Carpenter on Saturday; and 5-inning Smoltz on Sunday. Then they can pretty much look forward to a bunch of nothing for opposition the rest of the way. 20-win September for them? Sure looks likely.

After the Cubs leave, the Cardinals get to play in Houston, where they were swept earlier this year. Then Colorado.

on the west side SC, Neil just said the pitch to uggly was a bad pitch. it wasn’t a bad pitch! was it where he wanted? no. should he have thrown an up & in fastball to change his eye line & get him off the hook? yell yes. but it was still not a bad pitch. dude just went down & golfed it out. to quote Tony,
