there's another overflow, but this is the right thread....
Shortstop Brendan Ryan was in La Russa’s lineup Tuesday before discomfort stemming from a Monday slide into first base forced him out. Ryan jammed his left little finger diving back to the bag on an attempted pickoff and wore ice on the area during batting practice Tuesday. It’s expected he will also miss today’s game. – 9/16/09

Free-agent-to-be Joel Pineiro has informed his agent, Adam Katz, that he would like to try and work out a deal to remain with the Cardinals beyond this season. But the Cardinals and general John Mozeliak now plan on waiting until the offseason to continue talks with any of their pending free agents. – mothership

i think there may actually be an excess of love in the Cardinals clubhouse, right now

note in the article that Jo-El is influenced by Carp and Wainer.

See — and i shall be redundant about this for a while — I am afeared that it’s like this:
Everyone loves Mark DeRosa. Everyone loves Matt Holliday and his sunflower seeds. Julio Lugo, who was supposed to be the scary club cancer, Albert %)$!#$ Pujols likes him. Joel Piñeiro is everyone’s little buddy.

It’s doubtful that we can or should keep all these guys. And Mo is going to cut the strings on somebody and the clubhouse is gonna be all like “the front office isn’t behind us anymore, why can’t we get the band back together?”

I hope it doesn’t turn out like this, but 2009 may just be the year bromance sunk the Cardinals.

this is about the dumbest stance i've ever heard...

considering if we don’t talk to holliday ASAP our chances of retaining him drop exponentially.

by RedbirdAvenger on Sep 16, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

er, what?

I don’t dispute it’s dumb, but where are you getting that I said “don’t talk to Holliday”?

It's not that dumb

It’s a legitimate fear. Of course you want to hang on to good players, but costs are costs. Our team in 2007 was pretty similar to 2006 and that sure ended well. Chemistry is good, players getting along is good, and having players the fans like it good, yadda yadda yadda. But at the end of the day we smart fans just want to be sure that the organization is making prudent decisions based on good cost/benefit analysis and logic rather just “keeping the gang together”. And I’m not saying I know 100% that MO will make a bunch of dumb decisions in the off-season or something, but I think it’s not crazy to be slightly worried about certain players.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

no no no

I mean Mozeliak’s stance on waiting till after the season. Totally agree with everything you’re saying.

By the by, do you know how to do a chart in a fanpost? I’m trying to make one, and wandering in the dark.

by RedbirdAvenger on Sep 16, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You might just be right.

Out of the bunch of them, I would say to cut DeRo. Lugo isn’t gonna cost us anything. I want Holliday’s bat, his defense is just some extra baggage, besides we Colby in center to back him up. Hopefully, no Ank to take innings away from His Smoothness and maybe AP can get him to hit lefties well enough to not be an automatic out.

I would keep Joel, but unless he gives us the hometown discount for a shitload of piez, I don’t see it happening.

I would guess that a clubhouse could be a little to tight. Considering all the discord you see on other clubs, you wouldn’t think that it would be a problem.
