Game 143 Open Thread -- September 12, 2009

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals, Sep 12, 2009 4:10 PM EDT

Hudson Lohse
2.27 FIP 4.43 FIP

Tim Hudson's been sensational in his first 2 starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. Of course, it was just 2 starts against the Marlins and Reds but they have to be happy w/ what they've seen. He's always been a ground ball pitcher so we've gotta make him elevate the ball.

This is a pretty big start for Lohse. He may be pitching for any playing time at all in the postseason. He's making his first start in three weeks and, considering how well Smoltz has pitched, Lohse may not get the opportunity to make those game 4 starts in October. If not, he becomes the guy at the end of the pen who only pitches in extra innings or blowouts. He's gotta prove to Dunc and Tony that he deserves a more prominent role.

College football is more exciting and unpredictable than the NFL . . .

but I’m with you – baseball every time. Especially meaningful September baseball when the Cardinals are playing well.

by MercuryThe on Sep 12, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

College football has become the NFL minor leagues, though.

There are a few conferences that are like AAA teams, others AA, etc. And they all might as well be pros, for all the perks and under-the-table goodies they get.

I used to agree about college football being more exciting than pro. Now they’re both snores and bores. I’ll take our game any time. ANY time.

Anybody watching the Cubs-Reds game?

I remember the Reds announcers bloviating, back when we were playing them earlier (I think it was the game where Homer Bailey pitched very well), about how they had the best bullpen in the league.

RIIIIGHT.

by StanTheManFan on Sep 12, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

Update: Marmol gives up 2 in the top of the 9th

then pegs the next batter. Accidentally, of course.

Now waiting to see if the Reds’ vaunted bullpen can get 3 outs before giving up 2 runs. I’m not optimistic.

man

marmol and heath bell are doing there best to make me lose in the first round of the playoffs! I had ERA and WHIP locked down before those two went crazy in the last 2 days.

In fairness

when AP approaches Stan’s record for hits for the Cardinals, he’ll probably get almost as much attention.

Of course, there’s a difference between 3630 and 2721. We know that. The mediots don’t.

I’m not saying Jeter isn’t a HOF, I just am sure if he didn’t play in NY he wouldn’t get fellated so much.

Almost everyone ahead of Jeter on the all-time list

is in the Hall of Fame, or not yet eligible. Only exceptions are Andre Dawson (who will be, undeservedly), Vada Pinson, Al Oliver, Harold Baines. He’ll pass Oliver by season’s end.

Jeter, as much as it hurts to say it, is a seriously great player. That doesn’t make the media any less annoying.

by StanTheManFan on Sep 12, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont dislike Jeter

I honestly kinda like him. But because he plays for the Yankees he is incredibly overrated by the WWL and the rest of the sports media.
