Game 111 Overflow Thread

I hope Albert doesn't pull a hammy helping the fan onto the immobilization board.  I love the fan about 4 rows back taking the opportunity to snap a camera phone close up of Albert.

We need some more runz plz.

Pujols just needs to add to his legand status

with a bomb next inning

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

the legend continues

Faceplant fan was a Cards fan from New York taking his son to the game for this 21st birthday. Albert didn’t know them, but he had asked the umpire if he could give the kid a ball, before it all went down. Kid was a Cardinals fan, hence the gear.

Basically he kept the guy still and calm. First thing he thought of was the neck, of course. Lots of bleeding but nothing serious.

I think it’s messed up that they’re constantly asking Albert about this. Albert seems spooked by the whole thing. “This is not the way that I wanted to meet you,” he quotes the fan as saying.

I think the caption on this thread is in bad taste and coming from someone who vigorously chastised a group of people over BTB for characterizing Greinke as “having the crazies”, smacks of hypocrisy.

The fan’s an older guy, probably got a family, probably someone’s dad. Regardless of whether the injury was caused because he was going for a ball, he was hurt and pretty obviously right in front of a family member, for whom he was trying to fetch a souvenir. Have you ever seen your mother or father fall down right next to you? It’s not a good feeling. I realize that guy and his family aren’t likely to read VEB, but I hope I’m not the only one here who felt horrible seeing it and embarrassed by the reaction on this site.

Everyone who made snide comments regarding that poor guy and his injury should be ashamed of themselves; thank God or GOB we have a first basemen with a hellavu lot more class than some of the posters here.

Now go ahead and ban me.

Other mysteries remain. TL

The dude cut his forehead...

when he essentially dove onto the field. Not seriously injured whatsoever. It’s officially an LOL moment if you ask me.

dude, easy on the martyr complex

you’re not going to get banned, you’re completely free to express your opinion. Here’s me expressing mine: I don’t want to live in a world where we can’t laugh at someone awkwardly face-planting (provided they’re not seriously injured).

It's fine to express a contrary opinion

and we’ve never banned someone over that.

I think there’s a distinct difference between someone falling down because they were trying to catch a ball and someone having a mental disorder that isn’t of their own making. One is the person’s fault, one isn’t. And if I had fallen over the wall, I’d have told everyone on VEB the next day.

Just because he’s older or has a family or might be a father, he’s hands off? I’m a son and a brother, would that make me hands off too. (In all honesty, when people in my family fall, my mother has a reflexive nervous laughter that she can’t control. So this is a learned behavior for me.)

In any event, I’d say everything I typed to the guy’s face if I ever met him. I have no qualms with the jokes that were made.

Understand

But your position, that your mother falling and it being a humorous learned behavior for you, is precisely the attitude against which you were arguing at BTB when someone with “the crazies” said it was OK to make fun of “the crazies” b/c that’s how he characterized himself.

I appreciate your fine writing and the time you devote to this site and FR, but I, in my personal opinion, felt the incident to be gut wrenching the moment I saw it. Yes, he’s “hand’s off”; my understanding is that we’re here as good people on this planet to enjoy life and the game and not to mock the unfortunate – you know it and I know it and despite the fact we all deviate from that objective occasionally, we have to stick to that code.

I found the whole reverie over this event disheartening on the site, and I’m not aiming specifically at you, it simply made me wonder what the hell kind of people we are here.

And finally, if you said exactly the same things you typed (or others typed) to the guy’s face and he was my Paw, your mouth wouldn’t be working for a damn long time.

Cheers~

he wasn't "unfortunate"

he was stupid. Darwin-award level. He leaned over to try to grab something shiny and fell on his face.

The encarnacion injury was “unfortunate”. The ankiel injury was “unfortunate”. None of us made jokes at those. This is completely different.

So,

when people get hurt on America’s Funniest Home Videos are we allowed to laugh?

I’m not one of those people who laughs when other people get hurt. But it’s hardly a moral issue. The guy is fine. Relax.

No grudge

I didn’t comment in the relevant BTB post, but I understood AZ’s position there and it seemed right to me and at odds with the treatment of this event. AZ does not agree, however, we seem to agree it isn’t worth arguing over, despite the fact it is a topic with potential for a deep level of discourse. Since the purpose of this site is baseball and that’s what I want to absorb from it, I’ll just keep my trap shut until you again suggest we trade La Russa and I again counter-propose that we trade your stache ~

I'm not going to drag this out because it's obvious we aren't going to change each other's minds.

I’ll make two points and leave it:

1) The distinction between the BtB incident and this one is not that I characterize my own accidents as funny and therefore that other people can so if Graham characterizes himself as a “crazy” he can do the same to others. The difference is that the gentleman last night dove for a ball (his own decision) as opposed to someone who is afflicted with a mental disorder of which they do not have control or choice over. I think it’s an important (and not arbitrary) distinction.

2) I think the idea that your father would use physical violence to disuade what I say is rather unfortunate. I’m not the type to shut up because someone decides they can only respond with their fists rather than their brain.

Lastly

I won’t argue 1) b/c as you have inferred, it is a waste of time, although it’s difficult for me to discern the difference of someone’s brain spontaneously compelling them to grab a ball and someone’s brain off and on making it impossible for them to deal with society; there’s probably no premeditation in either instance. With respect to 2) I admit it was a “moranic” statement made in the wee hours when wine coursed my blood and I retract it to the extent temporally permissible and apologize for the brutishness.

As to all other content, however, I stand by the position. I regret having said anything, but as with the father making a stab at an unexpected foul-ball, I felt a sudden compunction to just do something and I was unable to restrain myself. Nevertheless, I think the statement is well grounded.

Selah~

I certainly won't be banning you...

but, it is important to note that the man was not seriously hurt…nor did he appear to be seriously hurt. albert at one point was smiling and joking with the guy. he did indeed have a family and i’m sure everyone who commented was just a little uptight about what was unfolding in a very tight game. some unsavory comments: yes. ashamed of themselves: no.
