10 Game Lead Victory Thread

We're up 10 over the Cubs. We're even w/ the Phils and a game and a half behind the Dodgers but we've got to keep playing well. We're not just playing for the division. We're playing for home field advantage. We have the best home record in the NL -- tied w/ the Dodgers -- so a series w/ the Dodgers, Phils, or Rockies could come down to who's at home. I really see all 4 teams as being pretty even right now, though the Giants are just a game behind the Rockies. Who'd a thunk we'd be 10 games up and it's still August?

the Cards’ series for the rest of the year—

p(.
we’re 77-55 now….we have seven series (21 games) against Milwaukee, Chicago, Houston, and Cincy, so we should expect 14 wins from there….we get to play the two NL East teams at home, so that helps. The series in Colorado looks like our toughest.
p(.
We could end up taking a run at 100 wins though….seriously. I don’t think we’ll get there, but 95 is certainly realistic.

But 95 wins only takes 18-12, and I think it’s very like we get to that number.

If we sleep on the Brewers, there will be trouble. Both Cubs and Cardinals face 7 more series against division rivals, except for the Cards, 3 of them are the Brew Crew. For the Cubs, 2 of them are the Pirates, plus an extra make-up game.

We face 3 wild card contenders who will be playing hungry.
The Cubs face 1.

One way of looking at it is that facing tougher, hungrier teams will only make them battle ready for October baseball…too many cupcakes is not a good thing.

As for the Brewers, I don’t think there is any danger of a let down against them…Albert and Yadi, I’m sure have long memories from that untucked shirts nonsense of a year ago…I’m ready to bury Milwaukee.

He has been playing 3B

He said the extra rest helped.

If up 10+ games I don’t see why Glaus shouldn’t play at least 5 of 6 games. Gives Tony a chance to see if he is playoff ready and gives DeRosa a chance to rest the wrist. Win Win in my book. Having last years Glaus batting 6th wouldn’t suck.

Yeah

’04 Edmonds > Holliday. ’04 Rolen > Holliday. Mabry had a huge year off the bench, Walker came over mashing, Womack worked some magic pixie dust to be OK, Reggie Sanders was basically what Ludwick has done—-that team was just comically good.

Zach Greinke complete game 1-hit shutout

I really hope the Cy voters don’t hose him for playing on the (2nd?) worst team in MLB. FWIW, he leads Neyer’s Cy predictor. Wainwright now leads for the NL (they’ve already got today’s game in the calculations for him – they don’t waste time!).

pretty impressive that ZG leads the cy predictor

and plays for a team that has no shot at the division title. He’s basically spotting everyone else 4+ points.

I think if AW gets to 20 wins, without a blowout loss, AND the giants miss the wild card, he’ll be the favorite. Otherwise it’s a crap shoot, with lincecum and cain both having the advantage of playing for a team in a race for the post-season.

In the coda of the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, composer Johann Sebastian Bach repeats the same chord sequence over and over again, leading the listener to anticipate one resolution, only to provide a tone completely different.
The only tones emanating from Nationals Park in the top of the first inning Sunday afternoon were the faded drones of an audience that had heard this composition too many times this season — game begins, visiting team assumes a lead, game ends in dreadful fashion.

poking around mlbtraderumors

re: Chris Duncan.

" Why let him go? Those 92 abs are such a small sample size. Why not let him finish the season, bring him back next year & see what can be done."

Sox already released VanEvery, who was a career AAAA guy with skills exactly like Duncan’s, Brad Wilkerson who actually had decent MLB power seasons a few years ago and still have both Jeff Baily and Chris Carter at Pawtucket as aging retread types, so why even try to hang onto another for next year to block a spot for Reddick (who took Duncan’s spot btw) Daeges who has been out injured most all this year and probably Ryan Kalish, who are all legitimate prospects? Are not 2 retread type guys in Carter and Bailey enough? Career ML guys already this year make up over 1/2 the PawSox roster, next year it should change and a guy like Duncan just does not fit. Bailey hopefully won’t be back either and that goes for Zink, Lopez, Trabor, Chavez, Woodward and 3-4 others.

ATG today

No BP for the home team after the gates opened, so I don’t know if they had it on the field at all today. Cool thing about it was, the Birds were taking a round of infield when the gates opened. Got to watch the guys work on DP feeds, etc. Most importantly, got to see just how ridiculous Boog is with the glove. I recommend getting there early if you have tickets just for the chance to see him in action. They closed with some slow rollers, and, I don’t know if anyone read the article by Goold about Boog’s newest trick with charging a slow roller from 3rd and throwing to first between his legs, but it is an amazing thing to see in person.

Also, I haven’t read through the game thread at all, but did the camera show anything with greene when he got taken out? I noticed that he went to the end of the bench after grounding out in his last AB and it looked like he smacked his helmet a bit and ripped his BG’s off. TLR walked over and gave him what looked like a “keep your head up” talk and a little smack, but when the birds came back out to the field Greene stayed on the bench. Just curious if anything was mentioned about it and I hope that he is ok.

I've been watching these old Twilight Zone episodes on SciFi (or Syfy as they now call themselves)...

And this shit is boring. I mean I realize it’s from like the 60’s, but I was under the impression that it was entertaining and somewhat creepy at times. Maybe I’m missing the point.

There are some good Twilight Zones

Maybe you’ve just been getting the bad ones?

you clearly missed

mega shark vs giant octopus, the other day. OTOH, it was on SyFyD, not SciFi, so I get you rconfusions.

Seriously, lorenzo lamas as the heir to robert heinlein just doesn’t work.

it's Clydesdales vs Goats. Actually sums up Cards vs. Cubs quite nicely. -all4tookie

According to coolstandings.com...

Our current playoff odds stand at 98.5%.

According to their numbers, missing the playoffs would amount to the 5th-worst collapse in MLB history.

I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’.

The American league bores me...

This will be the 4th time in 6 years that the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels will make up 3 of the 4 AL playoff teams. Yawn.

The AL Central has pretty much been a revolving door...

But outside of that, we’ve seen the Rays once and the A’s twice in that time. That’s it.
