So I watched Bull Durham the other day and something bothered me
Ebby Calvin ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh struck out 18 guys in a game and walked 18 guys in a game. So that means the min number of pitches he could of thrown is 126.
Why would a manager let a pitcher in A ball throw 126 pitches in a game. Did they not have pitch counts in 1988
As I replied on the other thread...
he was a college manager cleverly disguised and a minor league manager???

Don Baylor also an acceptable answer...

can anybody explain why we pulled
Boggs 88 pitches into his best game of the season to have THURSTON pinch hit? Was boggs sore? Injured? Because it seems silly when your bullpen explodes every other day to pull your starter early with a 4 run lead.

Dave & Tony were really pissed at him during his last half inning
that’s all i can think of
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
Because Dunn hit a HR?
Because you know, he has no track record of doing that to other pitchers or anything…
they kept showing them both after that happened
and Tony was walking around mad & taling to dave. and dave kept looking over his shoulder talking to him & he was mad. they both kept that up the rest of the inning. dave still looks pissed now.
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
I really don't get it.
If welly pitched this game they would talk about how much progress he made and how he battled without his best stuff.
It really is personal with them and some players.
Huh?
Let’s see…
Welley goes down with a mysterious arm injury and likely (as Welley admits) will never start another game for the Cards.
Boggs is starting over a cast of other pitchers who are just about at the same level (PJ, Hawk, Welley, etc.), leading one to conclude that TLR/Dunc at least “like” him the best over other comparable options.
Boggs gets pulled after one of his longest starts ever in the majors (as well, we know he takes a long time to warm up and the staff keeps track of this (i.e. the opposite with Wainwright), with the lead, and has a quality start in the bag. Why not turn it over to an underused bullpen, staffed with some guys who need to work on things in precisely these kinds of low leverage situations (Kmac, Motte), and give Boggs some confidence to boot?
Why do some here jump so quickly to ascribe negative, personal motivations to TLR’s decision-making when perfectly reasonable motivations are just as aparent from the known facts?
by Willie McGee's Twin on Aug 30, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
seemed like boggs was doing just what he
Should. With a big lead, he should pitch aggressively. If somebody hits a solo HR sobeit. I’d rather he threw strikes and went deeper in the game than loaded the bases with walks by pitching too carefully.
It’s beyond me why they would be pissed unless he missed a sign. I think he had one or two pitch ABs for each batter in that inning.

hopefully some savvy reporter will ask Tony that question
we might know why tomorrow
I stood where no man goes...
meh, tony probably thought boggs would give up more runs if he stayed out after 6, especially when he's never lasted that long in the bigs before.

6. Who was your favorite athlete growing up?
BR: I don’t know why, I never got to see him play, but I was always crazy about Mickey Mantle. My nickname’s after Boog Powell. And I watched the Dodgers play a lot, and loved them.
TB: How come your nickname is after Boog Powell?
BR: My dad and my brother loved a big, slugging first baseman, and loved that name.
TB: And that’s you.
BR: Yeah, exactly. (Laughs) They loved the name, and they wanted that to be my first name, but Mom wasn’t having that. Especially when I came out at 10 pounds or something, she said, “His name’s Brendan, that’s final.” That was that.

Giants vs Rockies game is pretty good

Which is precisely why
Everyone should root for the Rockies (or, possibly at this rate, the Dodgers) to take the wild card.
Teams that scare me...
in order of most to least:
Philly
Colorado
SF
LA
Atlanta
We really need to overtake Philadelphia to get home field for the NLCS.
Please take this comment in the spirit it was intended.
Is there any way we can play the Phillies in the first round?
If the Wild Card comes out of the West?
by FlimtotheFlam on Aug 29, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think so...
If we finish with the best record, we play the wild card winner.
If we finish 2nd to the Dodgers, we would also play the wild card winner.
If we finish 2nd to the Phillies, we would play the Dodgers.
If we finish 3rd and the Dodgers and Phillies finish 1st and 2nd, we would also play the Dodgers.
If we finish 3rd and the Phillies and Dodgers finish 1st and 2nd, we would also play the Dodgers.
So unless someone outside the West wins the wild card, we won’t see the Phillies until the NLCS.
V, b.
I'm not sure who to root for
I don’t want the Giants to make the playoffs, but Marquis started the game….
why can't we beat SF?

reveals the well of bitterness in the old man, because of his son’s treatment and because of the way the minor league operation is being run now. It sounds like he’s packing his bags.

fits the narrative
the Duncan story, as told to The Chatmeister, would make a compelling tragic opera. Verdi could have done great things with it.
Anyway, can’t blame Dave for sticking up for his son, but if chris was really refusing to seek medical care and playing hurt while clearly unable to play, thus hurting the team, that’s unacceptable.
What’s really interesting is that it seems like TLR is not fully supporting Dave on this…
it's Clydesdales vs Goats. Actually sums up Cards vs. Cubs quite nicely. -all4tookie
What amazes me
is for about the 9.314th time, the fans could see someone was clearly trying to play hurt and the manager could not.
Shut up, Fritz™.
could not? or just didn't do anything?
one of the things that dave says:
Dave Duncan reacted harshly upon learning of the trade the night of July 21. While reporters were shooed from the Minute Maid Park visiting clubhouse, Duncan lashed out at the team’s training staff in front of players for its handling of his son.
Reminded that Chris consistently denied his injuries when queried by reporters, Duncan insisted, “At some point the club should protect those who don’t protect themselves. Chris didn’t protect himself. And no one else protected him either.”
“no one else” clearly includes the training staff. does it include tony? tony clearly could have sat chris down and said, “you’re not right. i’m not playing you until you’re healthy again.” does dave blame him?
did this create a rift between dave and tony? maybe that’s why dave and tony seem to be on different pages. i also think the timing of the “vomit” speech was very odd. the article reveals that tony already knew that chris was being traded at the time he made the comment. trying to rebuild a bridge with an old friend?
the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus
possibly OT?
seems like TLR is just a tad more open and easy with this group of players. Of course, there’s the winning, but he’s enjoying himself. Not sure how much that figures if the band breaks up.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Duncan.
This is a PR coup for the front office. Now they can replace Dave with someone that is more in tune with the youth movement without the backlash that might have resulted otherwise.
and hopefully work with more than one type of pitcher
that was a bunch of nothing though. we already knew everything but the part about Chris refusing to see the Dr. if Dave really doesn’t want to work with guys who can’t throw sinkers, he probably should leave. and if he’s so upset that his son got hurt & told no one, and his play hurt the team & the fans aren’t happy with that, he should leave.
otherwise, honor your contract & kindly STFU.
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
Dunc is STFU'ing
He had an outburst over a month ago and PD is getting even on Duncan’s boycott (of STFU and honoring his contract) by running “a story” on what might happen. How brilliant is Strauss going to look if Dunc’s personal business ends up being because of his or his wife’s health?
This will have an immediate, negative affect
on Cardinal pitching. Maybe not so much with guys like Carp and Wainright, but the Lohse’s the JP’s, and the Franklins. Watch. I’ve been saying this for years…..Duncan has been as important to the Cardinal organization since his and TLR’s arrival as anybody except Pujols probably. Yes, probably more important than TLR. We don’t draft SP well. We don’t have a ton of money to throw around, and probably even less with Holliday on board. The one thing we’ve had was a pitching coach that would turn mediocre pitching into pretty damn good pitching. Sometimes it only lasted for a year, but it was important for that year.
I will say this…..if his anger is entirely over the handling of Chris, he is probably at fault more than the FO. But the rest of the things the article mentions him being upset about, there are no excuses. You don’t treat one of the best that way.
I hope he stays. The world will not end if he doesn’t, but I’d just about bet my savings that Cardinal pitching sees a downturn at least for a couple of years.

Which is exactly what Duncan needs
right now, the pitching staff is excelling with a former Cy Young winner on top of his game, a perhaps future Cy Young winner on top of his game, a guy making $7.5M and having a career year, a guy making $7.125 and being mediocre, and a future Hall of Famer who appears to be turning it around, with terrible starts by Wellemeyer and frighteningly average starts by Boggs mixed in.
Duncan has talent now and will need talent in the future to keep his title of “worlds best pitching coach.”
Shut up, Fritz™.
Go check the numbers.....
There was a distinct fall-off after he left. I have no idea which metric you’ll want to use, but for ease of argument, using ERA, their NL rank in the three years after LM was 10th, 3rd, and 12th. The three years before was 9th, 1st, and 6th.
I also don’t place LM and Duncan in the same boat. Seems to me that LM did a good job of turning studs into studs. I don’t remember him doing the same things that Duncan is known for doing, which is turning below average or average guys, into service-able 2/3 types. THAT is where his value is in my eyes. Like I said, STL hasn’t done a good job of drafting legit 1/2 types, we’ve only traded for one that I can recall (Waino), and we can’t afford to go sign a bunch of them. What happens IF we lose the ability to transform the Weavers, the Marquis, the Suppans, the JP’s, and the Lohse’s?
Matt Holliday. Nuff said.

There's no way you can eyeball something like this
and say that if the staff sucks next year, it’s because of DD. We’ve seen pitcher’s who haven’t succeeded under Duncan, we’ve seen some who get worse and we’ve seen some who get better. The staff turnover for a rotation and bullpen makes any direct evaluation of Duncan’s impact damn near impossible.
There’s simply too many variables.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
Isn't eye-balling what you MUST do
On something that can’t be measured statistically? Or should we just not discuss things that can’t be measured for that reason?
I agree that a direct comparison isn’t a very good measure as an overall team indicator. But if we resign JP, or you see Carp/Waino struggle for an entire year, I think we could say that DD had something to do with that, save injury problems.
Matt Holliday. Nuff said.
So what do we say now when a pitcher struggles? Your position isn’t consistent within the context of the timeframe that Duncan HAS been here much less once he’s gone.
But please, don’t let that dim the lights in your shrine to the coaching staff.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
I don't remember.....
having what I’d call a good pitcher struggle for an extended period of time under Duncan. Nor do I recall too many SP’s that haven’t had at least one productive season under Duncan. Maybe a couple, but not many.
I just don’t understand not giving props to a guy, a guy that outside of the Cardinal organization is regarded VERY highly. Kind of one of those “if nearly everybody has the opposite opinion that you do, you are either VERY smart, or wrong” type of deals. Duncan is very, very good at what he does. Perfect? No. The best in the business today? Almost assuredly.
Matt Holliday. Nuff said.

Marquis sucked under Duncan after 04.
Weaver sucked under Duncan, too. Suppan was average, Pineiro and Lohse both have had one good season for him and one average to bad season. Just like Wellemeyer.
Kip Wells, Sidney Ponson, Anthony Reyes, Rick Ankiel. The guy is a good pitching coach, but his “touch of gold” reputation is bullshit.
Shut up, Fritz™.

And turn them into something unimaginable for 10 more seasons. But taking a bad pitcher, and making him good for even 1 season is a plus.

Did Mazzone have the same reputation for reclamation projects though?
Mazzone had three HOFs (Glavine, Smoltz, and Maddux) which built his reputation. I don’t think Dunc has had quite the same talent in STL. Even Carp was not the pitcher he is now before coming to STL.
The ability to take scrap-heap level pitchers and turn them into valuable pieces, even for a limited time (like Wellemeyer or Pineiro, e.g.), is a hugely valuable service to a team, from an economic and performance perspective.
I think Dunc certainly needs to recognize other people’s failure in his son’s situation (like TLR’s and Chris’, as well as management and the medical staff) if he does not currently, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want him back as the pitching coach.

If we're going to give Duncan credit
for a guy like Carp getting healthy, then I have no chance at winning this argument. Duncan has been as instrumental to Carpenter’s success as he has been to mine.

If you think Carp is only better because of health...
and his success since coming to the Cards cannot be attributed at all to his pitching coach, then you must have gotten this information directly from Carpenter and I salute you for your inside-sourcing. Otherwise, you’re just talking out of your muffler (or whatever is on the tail end of a robot’s waste disposal system).
The comparison to Leo Mazzone is a complete non-sequitur, btw. The issue is whether Dunc is worth more to the Cards as a pitching coach than some hypothetical replacement. Your opinion is evidently that DD is not an asset since the success of the pitchers in STL (like Carp) are not in any way attributable to his coaching (I think I’m safe in assuming that DD’s effect on your success is nil). I guess we’ll just differ in opinion.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Aug 30, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Carpenter was regarded as a top notch talent
for a long time before coming to STL; he just couldn’t stay healthy. To say that he became a Cy Young winner with Duncan but wouldn’t have with another pitching coach is a massive assumption, imo. Did Duncan help him? Probably. If he had been healthy and random pitching coach A had been in STL would he have won a Cy Young? I think the answer to that is still yes.
It’s the same argument we have with TLR as a manager. There’s no real way to measure the impact so we’re left debating unfalsifiable opinions.
Dave Duncan is probably a fine coach. He does good work with retreads. I think he’s abominable (truly awful) at working with young pitchers. I also think he’s very, very hard headed about his approach to pitching and it’s to his detriment.
StL without Dave Duncan probably looks different but achieves similar results as StL with Dave Duncan.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
Well...
I didn’t say Carp wasn’t a top notch talent – I said, IMO, he was better for having DD as his pitching coach rather than another hypothetical pitching coach. In any event, an argument like this isn’t capable of being “won” – perhaps the best one could do is ask Carp himself given his knoweldge of and experience with other coaches.
To your second point, too many around here (not necessarily you, but maybe you in this instance) wrongly equate not being able to measure an effect with the effect not existing. This is wrong in many contexts, but especially wrong when the measurement tools are poor and there are too many interdependent factors that cannot be controlled. Of course, the relationship between winning baseball games and baseball managing/coaching is a prime example (which leads to so much debate on this website).

That was a fun game
Went to the game tonight. Despite it not exactly being a nail biter, that is one of the best times I’ve ever had at a game. What a great atmosphere! When Thompson was mopping up at the end it felt like Franklin (who sucks) was pitching and we were up like one run or something.
Seeing that play by Skip was unreal. I remember thinking when the ball was hit “well that’s a single” and then yelling “you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” when Skip actually made that play.

Anyone who rereads the Duncan-Lugo thread
will find all of this information there.
At the time, Mozeliak had informed La Russa that a trade was all but done. La Russa told his longtime pitching coach that night after the deal had been consummated. Chris and several teammates learned the news moments later. Because the Red Sox stipulated Duncan first be optioned, an official announcement was embargoed until the next afternoon.
This is also a kicker and it explains why there are issues with (some) minor leaguers transitioning to the big leagues:
Professional differences with the team’s player development side are a compounding issue. Dave Duncan was a member of Walt Jocketty’s inner circle prior to Jocketty’s dismissal as general manager in October 2007. Since Mozeliak’s hiring, player development has become more autonomous under vice president of scouting and player development Jeff Luhnow. A number of Duncan’s confidantes, including former minor-league pitching coordinator Mark Riggins, have resigned or been removed. Duncan now isn’t consulted on either potential player acquisitions or organization instruction. Communication between the two sides is scattershot, at best.
Prospects literally hear something different in St. Louis than they do in the minors. The approach to the game, stressing certain ways of pitching, etc are a tale of two cities to butcher a horrible cliche. Luhnow and Mozeliak are being forced to wait out TLR and DD to fully institute their overall plan for the club. DeWitt feels like it would be a PR nightmare to fire either TLR or DD (or really any of the coaching staff because they are all so close knit) so it’s a very big divide between the two sides.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
that's kind of a buzzkill, huh

somewhat
although, I’ve read the Strauss article several times now, and I don’t entirely agree with the timeline he presents. The sentiments of Duncan and TLR are accurate but my understanding was that Chris was aware of this prior to his father.
It could be that Chris had been approached or approached the FO himself about a move prior to consulting DD but didn’t find out about the actual trade until after his father. There was a family disconnect there as well though.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
lock up Carpenter
I’d take him as a pitching coach. Especially since it seems he spent his entire rehab time nosing around Dave’s notes.

It'll be interesting to see how a turnover of the coaching staff will happen:
TLR: 1996
McRae: 2004
DD: 1995
McKay: 1996
Oquendo: 2000
Pettini: 2002
Mason: 2000
That’s just 2 coaches with less than a decades tenure and everyone’s been around for at least 5 years. I have to wonder if any other team has had that kind of continuity.
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
it just seems like they're all connected, too
but if oquendo really does take over when tlr leaves, it seems like there’d be a good chance for the continuity to remain. and btw, if dunc really is muddling the organizational plan as is being reported (and this is how it has seemed for a long time, anyhow), then we can’t get rid of him soon enough.
"I think he's the best hitter of all time. I think there has never been a better hitter than him. And I know I didn't see them all, but I just don't think there could be." - Adam Wainwright on The Mang
I'm happy with those last four
Mostly I’m concerned as to who gets Dave Duncan’s services afterwards. If he stays in-division… well. Didn’t we just have a couple of posts illustrating that our offense can’t hit Dave Duncan style pitching staffs?
I’m serious about Carp, though. I don’t know how that’ll figure into his retirement plans, but he’s got a good eye and the right mindset. Some years down the line, some work in the minors — I’d bite. It could be some metaphor that Carp was standing in DD’s usual spot when Shelby threw his session.

I thinks its fair to say that DD is one of the best pitching coaches in the league. Some of the stuff about his meddling with player development is disconcerting, but his being able to take crappy/mediocre pitchers and turn them around has made this team what it is. So my question is, do we need to start Operation Midwest Nice with Dave Duncan?
