Saturday 8/29 Open Thread
Things to discuss:
Will the Washington Nine be dumb enough to retaliate for Albert's bat flip?
Doesn't Mitch Boggs seem like a random enough guy to randomly throw a no-hitter (while walking six)?
Interesting John Smoltz facts:
He has splits versus three of the four base coaches in the Nationals v. Cardinals series, and against the fourth's spawn (also known as the worst baseball player in the history of organized rounders).
Smoltz v. Marquis Grissom
Smoltz v. Pat The Bat Listach
Smoltz v. Jose Oquendo
Smoltz v. Cody McKay
Also, John Smoltz is so old, that following his first big league victory, he danced the Charleston on top of a flagpole whole holding the Lindbergh baby.
Leave all poetry, ASCII art, and other non-sense below.

i'd bet washington retaliates
but they probably will plunk the leadoff man or something like that. in all fairness, albert probably deserves one in the ribs.

If Albert gets drilled...
Tony will have a shit fit, and Boggs is going to be sacrificed quickly (assuming the benched get warned). I hope Brad Thompson is ready to go. But I doubt they actually hit him.
V, b.
for what?
Flipping his bat? He was pissed because they came up and in on him and then the guy followed that with an awful pitch that deserved nothing less than to end up in Illinois.
If they start throwing at our players, Pujols is liable to have one of those days where he doesn’t make any outs.
you can't deny that albert was sending a message with the stand, stare and flip of the bat
he should have just hit the ball 500 feet and run around the bases. enjoy the win. i don’t know why albert gets to take exception to up and in fastballs that are a routine part of the game. he’s the same guy who got pissed when gallardo (?) from the brewers “disrespected his teammates.” albert definitely disrespected the nationals squad without any good reason other than he had a frustrating night at the plate.

The bat flip was a little over the top...
But like it or not, he routinely stands and watches his home runs. So he just milked it a little more than usual due to his frustration and it being a walkoff. He was staring at the ball, not the pitcher or any Washington player. Gallardo stared into the Cardinal dugout and screamed, which is little different in my opinion.

I remember some finger-pointing being associated with the Gallardo incident as well

Americans started conflating ‘liberal’ with ‘leftist’ back when the anti New Deal crowd was trying to convince Americans that Social Security was going to lead us down the road of freebasing and wild sex parties, and they wanted to conflate social liberatarianism with social spending. "If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
we got two wars going on, so it's twice as expensive!
i honestly don’t know what i am anymore. i don’t know what to think of the wars anymore. i think everyone should pull their own weight. i think the gov’t roll should be very small & their only jobs should be protecting it’s citizens & make sure the infrastructure doesn’t fall apart. so what does that make me? i don’t know, i really don’t.
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
What does infrastructure mean to you?
"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
roads, interstates, highway's, etc
nuclear power plants probably as well. but that’s a tricky one because aren’t most electric/power companies private?
why? am i doing it wrong again?
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
Well, there are also
schools, police, fire, EMT, post office, regulatory agencies, foreign services, IT, intel, disaster relief, social services, etc.
Some are critical, some could probably be scaled down.
But we haven’t had “small government” since the post-industrial age, and most of the time when we have tried to “limit” government (states rights for disasters, pruning market regulations) we’ve done it wrong.
Shut up, Fritz™.
right, but the poice, fire, emt's, intell, etc can fall under the protection services
i think everyone can agree most schools are a mess. should that mean the gov’t should privatize them all? i don’t really know. but i think it should be looked into. it won’t be easy though, i remember when Reagan broached the subject & all hell just about broke loose.
also i forgot to throw in water & sewer type services, red lights, stop signs & stuff like that when i said infrastructure.
you are correct though, we’ve had a “big” gov’t for a while. and it’s nearly impossible to get rid of it now. which is why i can totally understand why so many are against it getting any bigger.

I don't have all the answers

"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
what do you mean by quality of life?
are you referring to health, wealth or something else?
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
Well, health for sure.
But off the top of my head: job opportunities, quality of education, life expectancy, access to high quality food. We spend out the ass for very little. The system is financially inefficient because it’s such a clusterf*ck and no one feels it more than the working poor.
The government, and it’s representatives, is too beholden to special interests to straighten out any of this mess. These special interests (big companies, essentially) love it that we’re so busy arguing over the issues we’ve been told mean everything (hot button stuff) that they’re making out like bandits to a greater degree than ever. Meanwhile, we argue over bullshit and fewer and fewer people can afford or have access to the very things that would make us free.

Eventually,
once Kevin Costner and Ford Lincoln Mercury retake the United States, I’d like to see a new form of government where no politician was allowed to claim a party, and they were only allowed to run for office on their own beliefs and theories.
The American two party system is so homogenized that Democrats and Republicans agree on probably 98% of issues, but the hyperbole machines at the likes of MSNBC and FOX News would have you thinking people who vote differently than you want to eat babies and steal your guns. (In the last two presidencies, both with their massive faults, Clinton did more to deregulate banks and be fiscally responsible than any president in my life time, yet will never get credit from conservatives, and Bush gave more for AIDS research in Africa and infrastructure development in third world countries than any prez in my lifetime and no liberal media outlet would give him credit for that.)
Meanwhile we’ve changed from Republican to Democrats in the White House and in Congress and back in forth perpetually for the last… well… forever, and America has never drastically changed.
The powers that be, besides the Fed and the banks who control us all (“Money aint got no owners. Only spenders” -Omar Little), whether Democrats or Republicans make money from the people they serve – corporations and the finical elite – and the media makes money scaring the proverbial pants off of all Americans riling up bullshit.
Shit never changes. And won’t until we evolve our political system to stop painting everyone one color or the other.
Shut up, Fritz™.
i would love if the two party system was gone
and everyone ran on their beliefs & just that. it’s too hard nowadays to paint everyone into the two boxes of republican & democrat. i don’t think anyone fits in them any more.
i’m too cynical though fritz, i don’t think 98% agree on the issues. if you put 100 people from all over the country in a room, it’d be nearly impossible to get them to agree on many of the issues & problems this country is facing. i do though leave the door wide open that i am dead wrong about this. in fact, i hope i am wrong.
speaking of the Fed, i’ve been wanting to read this book for a couple months now. it’s about how the Fed was created & just how our money system got where it is today. i’ve always like history & money, and this covers both pretty well from what i’ve been told.
pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels
The only issues
politicians use to rail on to part us against each others, in these current culture wars, are abortion, gay marriage, and, now, universal health care. Those are THREE issues out of everything that goes on in this enormous country of ours. And even with those (and maybe a few more that I’m missing) issues, moderates on both sides, which are basically 80% of the population can come to a conclusion if not to politely “agree to disagree” on.
It’s the wacko 10% on both sides that are weighing us down. Most of my friends are conservative, but when we sit down and have a beer or two, we almost always come into agreement on issues. but a lot of folks these days don’t want to hear differing opinions and sit in a vast echo chamber, masturbating in their own beliefs, until they’re convinced people who don’t agree with them on one or two issues out of millions should have no voice whatsoever.
Speaking of, hey! Lou Dobbs follows the postgame!

Anyone watching the Cubs v. Mets game on FOX?
A plague of flies or moths or locusts has swarmed the field? The things are massive? Anyone else seeing this? Dragonflies is what they are saying?
Are they attracted by the smell of piss and bad baseball?

They also showed a giant water spout out on the lake...
I think God is unleashing the plagues on those pagan, racist bleacher bums.

Seriously, a storm is gonna come, the earth is going to open, and all the dragonflies are gonna eat Hendry alive.

With the way the Mets have played
this season, and the general suck that is the Cubs, there’s a lot to attract them.

Yeah, its a bad decision to put McCarver and Buck on a Cubs-Mets game
Its obvious that Buck would rather talk about the Cardinals than talk about the Cubs.

Nobody ever says that.

But clearly we’re the ones that should be worried about our head coach. See my avatar.
V, b.
Obviously the coaches of our two teams have struggled as HCs so far
But one has taken his new job, put his nose to the grindstone, and quietly gone about his business, while for the most part getting the entirety of the fanbase that was livid after his hiring to fully support him and his staff. The other has run his mouth non-stop and made enemies with half of the SEC, while dividing the fanbase that was so supportive of his hire initially. Not to say Kiffin hasn’t worked hard or what not, but he’s letting his mouth write checks that his ass can’t check (IMO). I’d also be wary of bringing an NFL DC in to coaching his highly complicated scheme to college kids who don’t have all day to spend watching film.
Yes, I’m a Lane Kiffin hater. Don’t care who knows it.

The fan base isn't split...
With all due respect, you have no idea what you’re talking about. The only UT fans that are upset about Lane are the ones who can’t stop tonguing Phil’s balls. Everything he has done has been with the attention of drawing attention from recruits to a program that Phil had run into the ground. And it worked. But he insulted Urban Meyer’s delicate sensibilities, so now he’s a villain of epic proportions. And we don’t give a shit of Florida beats the crap out of us this year, they’ve done it two years in a row so we can handle it just fine. It’s not about this year, it’s not even about next year. Everyone else in the SEC had become comfortable with Tennessee because they saw us turning into a doormat under Phil. Now they see the players Lane is bringing in, and it’s clearly visible what Tennessee is capable of returning to in the near future. So everyone is a little bit nervous. Could it all go down in flames? Sure, but it’s not going to. I’m guaranteeing you that much.
V, b.
So if there are fans that can't stop tonguing Phil's balls, and they're upset about Lane
That means the fanbase is split, even if only by a little bit. And you’re right, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. But Auburn’s been doing a fine job of bringing in recruits themselves without dissing every SEC coach along the way. I wouldn’t necessarily call a program that was in the SECCG two seasons ago a program that’s been “run into the ground.”
My whole thing is that Lane Kiffin (like Gene Chizik, to a certain extent) is a completely unknown commodity. He did a great job as OC for USC, but so could my 7-year-old cousin. He did a poor job as HC of the Raiders, but so would Vince Lombardi. He could be a great coach, but IMO the evidence he’s shown so far at UT (brashness, cockiness, immaturity) leads me to believe UT may be heading for an Orgeronian Ole Miss era; that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as long as they continue to recruit well. I fear Auburn may be heading for the same fate, but I feel confident Chizik and the staff he put together will have us up in the top half of the SEC regularly in a year or two. I can’t say the same for Kiffin and his staff. He could be a very good coach, I just don’t see it.

But those people are going to be upset no matter who replaces Phil...
So how is that Lane’s fault? Phil managed to have a losing record in two of the last four years, and we lucked into an SEC Championship appearance in a year when we lost to Cal 45-31, Florida 59-20 and Alabama 41-17. We are 1-7 the last four years against our biggest rivals, and the majority of those have been blowouts. Phil and his staff had gotten unbelievably lazy in recruiting, which, for example, is why we’re left with the thinnest offensive line in the SEC. Phil was an offensive lineman. It wasn’t going to get any better. Of course Lane is an unproven commodity, there’s no denying that, but people are trying to label him a failure for all the wrong reasons. He absolutely has us headed in the right direction where it matters most (recruiting), and I have no doubt that we’ll see a difference on the field this year. He’s done nothing whatsoever to give people the right to judge his coaching abilities at this point. Everyone wants to talk about the rest of the SEC hating him when, in reality, it’s one school. But you know what? We don’t care.
V, b.
Well, he took coaches from Alabama and South Carolina, so they hate him too
It’s all speculation at this point anyways. I’m speculating Kiffin will disappoint Vol fans. You’re not. We won’t have a verdict until a few years down the line. I think the most important thing to take away from this debate is that the next seven days need to hurry by.

Losing record?
Our record against the Mets this year is 5-4. Not great, but not a losing record either.
tidbits per the game preview
1) No active Cardinal has faced Stammen in a Major League regular-season game.
2) The Cardinals have been held to three or fewer runs in four straight games and eight out of 11
