How the fuck are we losing the Nats?

Also, Smoltz has now thrown thrown 167 pitches in the NL and 114 strikes. That’s 68%, which is awesome. League average is about 60%. He’s also gotten 22 swinging strikes, good for 13%, which is even awesomer. League average is about 7.5%. Looks like he’s still got plenty left in the tank.

an actual question, now:

what would happen if a manager didn’t really put down positions for the fielders? its not like there is some set rule saying where everybody has to stand. or if the players just didn’t play where they were listed?

by Expatcardfan on Aug 28, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

the pitcher for one

has to be identified and pitch to at least one batter. if he goes to play a position (ala whitey putting him in RF) he can only do so once in a game.

i don’t know about the others…

there's a reason they're standardized

but there’s nothing that says you couldn’t have two outfielders and five infielders, for example…that’s why managers try the shift on hitters they’re convinced are going to pull, but the reason why everybody puts them in the usual places is probably pretty self explanatory

just a change

i don’t even care if the speed differential is only 5 or 6 mph, work your ass off and make it indistinguishable from the fastball. trevor hoffman has parlayed it into a HOF career, you can too

the dream pitch would

be for Smolzinski to teach him that splitter. Imagine not knowing if that fastball is gonna violently dive down and possibly away at the last moment, or if its gonna explode to the plate at 99 MPH. Chances of him learning that pitch and controlling it are slim to none, unfortunately.

I really feel like he'd be more valuable in the rotation in the abstract.

But given the void in our bullpen, I see how he might be more valuable there.

Still, I’d prefer that our bullpen just get better, either internally or through waiver pickups, so we can keep him in the rotation.

Marco Scutaro was removed from Friday’s game at Fenway Park after being hit in the head by a pitch with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

The Blue Jays shortstop immediately fell to the ground after a fastball sailed up and in from Red Sox starter Josh Beckett. Scutaro was diagnosed with a head contusion.

The Yankees do not have a nation…they have an evil empire. Obviously.

The Red Sox do not have a nation…they have the world’s largest traveling bandwagon.

It was one of those male easy-listening guys.

I recall the lyrics but I can’t find it on google.

I’m sure there’s some hipster in Columbia dying to do something with it. It may not be ironic enough for them yet. Columbia is full of dabblers and dilettantes (actually, I guess that’s the same thing).

Ok, I don't live anywhere near St. Louis anymore

but I’ve been seeing this “mix tape check” for most of the season, and have been assuming that it’s something playing on the radio station (or tv station) that covers the Cardinals, so I never get to hear it. Is this correct?

There was Gibson in the Reds' dugout, visibly manhandling about three Reds and tossing them bodily out of the dugout and onto the field...He was the toughest athlete mentally I ever saw, and the greatest competitor. JACK BUCK

Outside of the FOX broadcasts...

Have the Cardinals played any Saturday day games at home this year? I know they have to start at like noon to avoid being blacked out, but I couldn’t remember if there were any early on this season. I know they haven’t played any recently.

I got off my lazy butt and looked it up...

Looks like there were two in May (one of which I attended, duh!), one in June, and one more coming in the season’s final weekend. Still though, it seems like there used to be a lot more.

and yeah, I remember one I was supposed to go to one but bailed because it was high 90s and sunny. As much as I love going to games, those ones are too brutal when you’re hungover and not under an overhang (hey…wouldya look at that), much better enjoyed in front of the tv with a cool drink in hand

But the only ones that weren't FOX games...

were Milwaukee on May 16th, Kansas City on May 23rd, and Minnesota on June 27th. I was going by this. The October 3rd game with Milwaukee will be a non-FOX day game as well, but it’s on KSDK instead of FSMW for some reason. So we have to listen to Jay Randolph for two straight days to end the season. Kill. Me. Now.

What's the bullpen gesture for the splitter?

I’m going through my footage and trying to pick out the pitches that are the Smotzl™.

I assume the gesture for the splitter is where he takes the glove straight down to the ground while keeping the glove palm down. Kind of like the change-up gesture, but down rather than up.

Anyone know if that’s the correct gesture?

Yeah that's right

At least in my person experience, the gesture was always glove out, palm either out or down, and then drop it straight down. As opposed to changeup, which is a similar, but instead of dropping it down, you pull it back (or push it out and pull it back).

So I get all their FSN games, I’m blacked out of their games on MLB.TV, and etc. However, I’m getting the Mets-Cubs game rather than the Dodgers-Reds game on FOX tomorrow. I’d rather watch the Cubs lose, but I still find that highly comical. MLB’s television distribution is so out of whack.

wtf. I am glad I am not a cubs fan.

An entire post on BCB boils down to “Just because there’s one douchebag doesn’t mean they’re all douchebags!” despite a first-person report of drunken, racially-charged taunts continued in front of ushers and security.

“That happens in every park.”

There is still not full agreement on the douchebaggery.

Uh, no, I think that does actually make you all douchebags. LOL. (Okay, I may have my definitions wrong; ‘douchebag’ is too tame.) But I guess it’s more important to debate reality than call out security for sitting on their hands.

as much as I loathe the Cubs

I have to admit that Wrigley is a one of a kind place. They should enforce some kind of alcohol ban in those bleachers (even if its only a partial ban), make the tickets even cheaper and invite a more family friendly atmosphere out there. It would be the most competent thing Cubs management has done in a long time. Wrigley is crumbling less from its age than it is from the sheer weight of the insipid douchebaggery of the average bleacher bum.

From saying fans have a right to be pissed because the Cubs have “almost zero grit,” to concocting stories about White Sox fans infiltrating Wrigley and shouting racist remarks to make the Cubs look bad, to trading insults about Bush, Obama, and Kennedy, to hurling ad hominems at one another, to still hanging on to their Derosa as the Messiah complex….

New Elias rankings out...

http://www.scribd.com/doc/19216605/Rankings-082909

DeRosa is less than a point from Type A with Glaus and Freddy Sanchez above him. He’s been slowly ascending and will almost certainly be a Type A. Awesome news for the franchise… I’m sure they’ll offer arb. I really hope they don’t sign him to more than a 2/15 type deal.

Ank continues to sink, and is now below Type B. This is probably a good thing insofar as it reduces the chance he’ll be back with the Cardinals.

Pineiro and Miller are a solid B and A, respectively, and of course Holliday is an A.

To Boo or not to Boo
I was at this game in Pittsburgh and let me be the first to say I was highly disappointed in Phillies fans. The game after Lidge blew the save, he was standing out in right field during batting practice. My buddies and I were letting him have it a little bit and we received some ridiculous comments. "Hey, did you guys boo Mike Schmidt? He was a Hall of Famer." First, off no, asshole, we did not boo Mike Schmidt because we are 20 fucking years old. And Brad Lidge is no where near a HOF caliber player. Another nerdy looking Phils fan told us that we should not be treating him this way because "he was perfect last year." He also added, "I wouldn’t trade anything for last year." Hey, asshole, get your head out of your ass. It’s 2009 you dumb prick. Not only did the Phillies win the World Series last year but you’re now 40 years old. LEAVE THE FUCKING PLASTIC GLOVE AT HOME!!! And Lidge, he’s been as bad if not worse than Jose Mesa in his save-blowing prime. It’s time for fans to move on. Everyone bitches about Hamels because he did the banquet circuits and wasn’t ready to pitch this year (although he pitched well last night). Well, that is a double-standard because Philadelphia fans have yet to move on. IT’S 2009. THIS IS A DIFFERENT TEAM. When we drove out to Pittsburgh, we thought we were going to see the truest of the true Phils fans. Sadly, all we got were those assholes that normally show up to CBP with their StubHub tickets in hand wearing a Phillies World Champions t-shirt.

Secret Weapon not sending runners

There were only a few comments on the thread when it happened, so I’ll rehash it a bit. I am not very happy these past two days with Oquendo not sending runners on 2nd with a base hit. It was more questionable two nights ago, but last night should’ve been pretty easy to send Holliday after a slow single. Why is he is darn conservative sometimes?

I see your pt. but not necessarily agree

A runner doesn’t have to take the C. Dunc approach of baserunning. One could try to get around the catcher. And if the throw is off-line or late, then it’s moot. Also, I don’t believe in playing to avoid injuries. I am not advocating the Aaron Rowan’s school or playing hard, but I think one should play hard and smart.

I realize that the runner on 3rd did score

but all’s well doesn’t necessary always end well. Sending the runner opens up other possibilities beside just scoring or getting thrown out. The runner on first could possibly advance to third, the throw can get away at home, etc… I think the way the offense has been sputtering lately, I’d rather play small ball instead of waiting for the “big hit”.

The latest Elias Rankings are out and Mark DeRosa is the highest ranked B and is only .5 away from type A status. Also Matt Holliday, since becoming a Cardinal is on pace for 35 HR’s a season assuming he plays 160 games a season.
