VEB Postgame Emporium

I don't really know what an Emporium is but it sounds like a place full of wizards and leprechauns.

As the Cardinal offense gets a bit chilly, Wainwright comes in to continue his climb into the hearts of national media writers everywhere and past Timmy Lincecum.  It's dangerous to mention it but there seems to be a distinct possibility that the Cardinals could have both the Cy Young and the MVP this season.  The danger being that Carpenter has a strong case of his own and could usurp votes from Wagonmaker.

I love when we're concerned about one of our awesome pitchers stealing votes from another one of our awesome pitchers.

by jacksonian on Aug 26, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I go back and forth...

Last year’s offense was such a disaster, and there is no doubt that Clawson’s system was just flat out broken. It was horribly complex, and none of those guys ever bought into it. They were only using 60% of the playbook at UCLA to start the year, and they simplified it more and more as it went along until we saw middle school ball against Vandy and Kentucky. Outside of the QBs, that was the same team that went to Atlanta the year before, so it’s hard to pin it on players. With that said, Crompton looked like total shit the vast majority of the year. But he (and the rest of the offense) was confused out of his mind every time he stepped to the line of scrimmage, and his confidence was probably gone by the end of the UCLA game. I just look at Ainge and what Cutcliffe was able to do with him. He was a total headcase in 2005, and Cut competely transformed him into an above average SEC quarterback. But we saw what Ainge could do in 2004, so it’s a little different. But all things considered, I think Crompton will be serviceable. He’ll probably throw his fair share of awful balls, but he will look completely different with a functioning offensive system. At this point, I’m much more worried about the paper-thin depth on the offensive line and our suddenly fragile wide receivers. The defense should be good, although not as good as last year. The linebackers are completely unproven. All of that said, I think this team goes 8-4. Anything less than 4-0 in the nonconference would be a disappointment, so then you only need 4 SEC wins. I think that’s well within reach with Auburn and South Carolina at home, plus Vandy and Kentucky. If we can stay healthy, beating Georgia or Ole Miss (terribly overrated) wouldn’t shock me at all. So I’m saying 8-4, quietly optimistic for 9-3. Add in a bowl win with either record and it’s a wildly successful first year for Lane.

Being from St. Louis...

How did you become a Tennessee fan?

V, b.

by LukeMP1186 on Aug 26, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Nearly all of my dad's family lives in Knoxville and Kingsport

He pretty much indoctrinated me into the ways before I knew any better. It helped that Mizzou and Illinois weren’t particularly good in my formative years and SLU doesn’t have a football team. He would work some weekends and always call me to tape the games for him. DVR became a great gift.

I think I have more faith in the O-line than you do, but I am most concerned about the receiving corps. Even if it was the system last year, Crompton won’t look any better if Jones is out for any significant time or if the super freshman aren’t super. The OOC schedule isn’t too bad, except I have no idea what to expect for the UCLA game. I know it’s at home and we should dominate just like we did when we played Cal a few years ago, but I can’t shake the feeling that something will go wrong. The game last year was agonizing and it is the week before Florida. Beating the 4 non-conference foes, Vandy and UK, and one of Auburn or South Carolina is the baseline I think is reasonable and maybe we can sneak up on somebody else.

I am pumped this fall though; first trip down to Neyland Stadium. I think I am coming down for the Memphis game with my dad. Have heard all the stories about the awesomeness of the crowd and massiveness of the stadium and the whole experience. So pumped.

"I've got six players coming in who think they poop ice cream,"

by jacksonian on Aug 26, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

The O-line starters will be fine...

But the depth is what’s concerning. Josh McNeil went out for the year today, and although he had just lost his starting spot to a former walk-on, that’s still terrible for depth. That’s what pisses me off about Fulmer more than anything else. The man was an offensive lineman, and this is the situation we’re left with. I’m so glad to see a real commitment to recruiting again. The receiver situation is concerning for sure. We’ll probably be without Gerald and Denarius until at least the Florida game, so those freshman are going to get thrown into the fire. That will probably wind up being beneficial as the year goes along, but it may be a little ugly early on. But those guys are really, really talented. I’m excited to see how it plays out, I just logged in and requested my ticket for the Western Kentucky game. My four years here have covered one of the worst stretches in program history, so hopefully I have something to be excited about in year five.

But that's the thing, JD...

He wasn’t that good. He threw two long touchdowns against LSU when Ainge got hurt, but they were both just bombs that Robert Meachem went and got. He was an All-American. He has a cannon, but going through his reads and such has been the primary issue. Meachem was obviously option #1 on both plays. Outside of that, he was 9-22 for 92 yards and an INT. He was just 16-34 the next week at Arkansas with another long TD to Meachem, a TD in garbage time, and an INT. All of that said, he was only a RS freshman, and he looked much better than he did last year as a RS junior. That says a ton about Clawson’s system. So I like I said, I think he’ll be serviceable so long as he has any confidence left.

but fuck it. Too many off days and too many frigging pitchers. And too many days left in the year. I have no idea what Tony’s gonna do.

Suffice to say, without going back thru all of it, that Carp-Waino-Pineiro can easily be lined up to go 1-2-3 in some sort of hypothetical post-regular season league that would keep playing after the first week of October. If such a thing were to occur. Which I’m not saying that it is. Only that it could be.

I really like their Extra Stout

The problem is that I’ve come to like more and more strongly flavored beer, and so now when I drink a normal Guinness it almost seems bland and watery. I never thought I’d describe Guinness as bland and watery (and someone who knows more about these things would probably tell me it has something to do with the bottling vs. tap processes, and they’d probably be right) but last time I had one (admittedly from a bottle) it tasted like that. But Extra Stout is great.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

by mattybobo on Aug 26, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

yes, not nearly as good from the bottle

and it has to be ppoyured right and served at the right temp if from the tap, which admittedly it normally is not. But you’re not entirely off base in your assessment. Rogue Shakespeare Stout and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, e.g., are fuller more robust stouts to be sure. I spring for them once in a while. But those are ‘specialty beers’ and Guinness is still in my mind an everyday beverage, a working man’s drink that’s not not too expensive. In that sorta limiting context, its fantastic.

by mattyp on Aug 26, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

When drinking Guinness at home

I much prefer the can. Bottled Guinness always seems off to me, but the can seems the closest to on-tap.

Plus, the cans are full U.S. pints, so additional win.

I never would slip you Mickey! It is merely rhinoceros horn. This makes the champagna bubble.

by The Continental on Aug 26, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm gonna have to look for it in cans sometime then

I still like it, and I’m pretty sure part of the reason it was bland last time I had it was because of the proximity to drinking something else that had more “umph” to it.
Oh, and Rogue Shakespeare Stout is awesome.

yeah, they finally cracked the code they've been working on for nine years one series before the ASG

this is just silly. You can get him to chase low and away with some regularity, but that’s been evident for a while. The only other thing I’d say is that the ability to “hit to all fields” has been somewhat exaggerated. He has the capacity I’m sure, but really its not his forte. He usually poses the biggest threat with the pulled line drive/homer or the scorcher down the third base line. Maybe there’s a way to see what pitches lead to those outcomes and guard against it. But I’m sure they figured that out long ago and have been pitching him that way for years (he already sees the least percentage of balls over the plate as a proportion of total pitches, doesn’t he?). What Pujols capitalizes on are mistakes. Always has, always will.

Two Hipsters Angrily Call Each Other 'Hipster'
AUSTIN, TX—An argument between local hipsters Dan Walters and Brian Guterman has devolved to the point where each is angrily calling the other “hipster,” those close to the pair reported Monday. “Hey, hipster! Here’s 12 bucks—why don’t you go get yourself a bucket of PBRs at the Gold Mine?” Walters, 22, is said to have told Guterman, 22, invoking the name of a local bar known for its “poseur” clientele. “Whatever you say, scenester,” Guterman allegedly replied. “Don’t you have a Death Cab For Cutie show to be at right now?” Acquaintances of Guterman and Walters trace the long-running conflict back to high school, when they reportedly threw pencils at each other and argued about who was more “emo.”

so therefore i assumed that you were putting forth the reason greinke was ranked so far behind verlander was to paraphrase “getting lit up too many times this season”

Holliday: "Albert, Carp and I have been talking about it and we think we know what your problem is. You've been tipping your swings." I expect no further problems.

by slash2049 on Aug 26, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

so I can't talk solely about greinke being #8?

sorry, geez.

I’m not saying I agree with the ranking, see mattybobo’s point. But I wanted to address why it could drop.

I think part of it is that Verlander has allowed more home runs… but there’s the perception that he generally deals after that. His WPA for the home run games still barely averages out to positive. In only 4 of those games did Verlander’s WPA dip under -.100. Greinke is about half and half, and his average is negative.

I don't think it's a true "ranking"

It’s just trying to predict how the voting is going to go down. I wouldn’t doubt that Neyer would put Greinke higher up on his own personal ranking for who actually deserves it.

an embarrassment of riches

this recent surge has got me pondering something that has heretofore been far back on the shelf, namely, the possibility that the Cardinals could finish with the best record in the NL, and thus be in a “better” playoff position.
Clearly the home field advantage sounds important, but personally I would rather play the Dodgers or the Phillies FIRST — in the five-gave playoff — taking advantage or our (arguably) stronger front three starting pitchers.
The Giants have the best starting three, and I don’t want within a thousand miles of Coors Field (let someone else try to beat whichever one of these two is the wild card.)

WPA after twenty weeks

per Fangraphs

Hitters
Team Total: 0.549 (7th in NL, 12th in majors)
Best 3: Pujols (5.633, 2nd in NL & MLB), Ludwick (1.085), Holliday (1.928)
Worst 3 (non-P): Ankiel ( -1.662, 4th worst in NL), T.Greene ( -.986), Thurston ( -.823) [PITCHERS: -3.341, Wainwright -.831]

Best WPA by (non-P) position: 1B (5.352); worst: 3B ( -2.096) [Pinch hitters + DH: -1.284] (The numbers for the 3rd basemen haven’t improved, but have stabilized after the insertion of DeRosa.)
Best single-game performance: Molina 8/16 v SD (.622); worst: Ankiel on 6/18 v Tigers ( -.348)
Best Plate Appearance: Pujols’ Grand-slam v CIN 7/3 (.506); worst: Greene’s game-ending DP on 4/17 ( -.290)

Starters
Team Total: 5.669 (3rd in NL, 5th in majors)
Best to worst: Carp (4.438, 1st in MLB), Wainwright (3.705, 6th in MLB), Pineiro, Smoltz, Walters, Lohse, Boggs, Thompson, Welley ( -2.251, Worst in NL)

Relievers
Team Total: 3.319 (3rd in NL, 6th in majors)
Best to worst: Franklin (2.847, 1st in NL), Miller (1.252), McClellan, Hawksworth, Perez, Boggs, Todd, Mortensen, Walters, Boyer, Motte, Thompson, Reyes, Welley, Kinney ( -.770)
Best single-game performance: Hawksworth’s 3-extra-innings v LA 7/29 (.416); worst: Motte on Day 1 ( -.833)

Pitching
Who are we beating up: 5-hitters ( -2.453) & shortstops ( -1.966), plus pitchers ( -3.233)
Who is beating us up: leadoff guys (.292) & 1st basemen (1.177)

Best inning – hitting: 4th (1.667); pitching: 9th (2.490); overall: 8th (2.858)
Worst inning – hitting: 2nd ( -3.377); pitching: 1st ( -.890); overall: 2nd ( -1.714)

Last 29 games (since Holliday, 13 games over .500): Batting 2.853, Starters 2.577, Relievers 1.064
Trending up: Holliday (1.928), Wainwright (1.654), Carpenter (1.597), Franklin (.913), Ryan (.883), Pujols (.815), Hawksworth (.694), Miller (.563), Rasmus (.492)
Trending down: Wellemeyer ( -.722), Lohse ( -.513), Motte ( -.481)

As bad as the back half of the lineup has been this year (spots 5-9 are all at least -.987, combined -8.184), our pitching has rendered almost the entire opposition lineup below average. Leadoff (.292) & 6-hitters (.138) still cling to hope, but every other spot in the order is a drag on their offense versus our staff.

He is saying that:

1) He was deeply upset by the fact that they dealt Chris (from the 25 man roster) for a guy who was D.F.A.’d. Basically implying that somebody in the organization had an axe to grind with Chris and that it happened too soon (meaning that they had no idea it was going down) for him to be comfortable.

2) He is also not on speaking terms with the PD (save for the update today to Goold) because they took it personally when Strass, Bernie, etc… published his statistics as evidence that he was doing poorly or possibly hurt.

About the second issue. It really shocked me during the Chris Duncan interview on the afternoon show (the fastlane) when he mentioned Bernie Miklasz as someone who picked on him. When, if you listened to or read Bernie on a regular basis, you couldn’t possibly mistake him as anything but pro-Chris Duncan. He got that impression from someone/somewhere, and I guess that now I wouldn’t be suprised if it was Dave telling him this stuff.

Don't worry, Y2S

The conditional statement was in my previous post in the thread

Not a good sign

I hope that the two sides can come to terms.

I understand that Dave is upset, but why is he taking it out on us as much as he is? Everyone knows that Lil Dunc was struggling terribly, and Lugo’s done a good job for us. You’d think that DD would understand the professional side of the trade – but apparently, it’s not the case. Since Dave is upset with us, what’s DD gonna do if the Yanks release Shelley? Is he going to put on the same show?

Dave is pissed and not talking to the PD

big f’ing deal. Is he still coaching well? Has he become a distraction to his pitching staff? I don’t think so. Who gives a rat’s ass that our pitching coach isn’t on speaking terms with the local columnists.
