How can he call 3 a strike and not 2? If he’s consistently calling a wide zone, fine. But that second pitch was clearly mis-called.

Oh boy

The front of the plate is 8 inches deep, so really we’re talking .35 of an inch, which (hold your fingers apart 1/3 of an inch) is not much at all. Indistinguishable when it’s 85 mph. And on top of it an umpire who physically cannot track the pitch in the last 10 feet since our eyes don’t move fast enough cannot be making a better call than a 2D slice.

In any case, the number of pitches that are both moving among the best in the league and hit that .35 inch window where they don’t hit the front of the plate but do hit the back are how many? An irrelevant number.

Hmm , re-reading the yahoo sports recap, maybe he was saying Smoltz was tipping his pitches in Boston
Although manager Tony La Russa said Smoltz was tipping pitches, the veteran managed to regain his confidence.

"I don’t know to the extent how long it was going on, or if it was, but I just know it’s refreshing to come and do something and feel like the old John," Smoltz said.

but his delivery looked markedly different to me. of course, because of said, I have no idea which pitches he threw, but it struck me as unusual.

y'know, even with photobucket

If you’re only posting to VEB, that can’t possibly be breaking bandwidth. That smells like hot-linking, imo. I think photobucket charts out the highest bandwidth images and tracks down who’s hot-linking them. You may just have to rename the files.

i looked at the stats today,

and since i first posted the pablo sandoval gif earlier last week, there have been around 30000 views of the pics i’ve posted here. i don’t get how they come up with those numbers though. but i guess that’s why i’ve gotten a couple emails saying i’m about to exceed the bandwidth limit

they say they can measure how many people visit veb & see the pics. that’s where they come up with those the numbers.

pretzels pretzels pretzels pretzels

by gdm426 on Aug 23, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

here's the thing, though

there can’t be 30,000 views on VEB. it’s like, maths. or so they tell me. I got 94 recs on the glossary in total, and even if that’s 10% of the VEB visitors, that’s only 1,000 viewers loading the game threads. They would each have to reload it 30 times.

in other words, if people are looking at your images on VEB that much, every other person’s photobucket image would be in the same trouble.

if you named it anything that says “pablo sandoval and cake”, chances are it’s coming up in a google search and someone is posting it on their website, and that’s what’s getting hits.

this just in: CHRIS CARPENTER - FLAW DETECTOR
“He throws 94 miles per hour with a good split and good bite; that’s pretty good. That’s pretty impressive,” said Pujols, who capped the Cardinals’ scoring in the fourth inning with an opposite-field home run.

“It’s amazing. To watch him go out there ……it was exactly what I expected,” offered Chris Carpenter, among those Thursday who detected the flaw in Smoltz’s delivery. “His professionalism, what he does on the mound and how much he’s in the game … it was fun to watch.”

think he’d make a good pitching coach? maybe carp’s looking to the job security, and has secretly read all of dave duncan’s binders — and left notations in the margins.

Duncan isn't a mechanics guy

he is a ‘do this’ guy. Meaning, ‘THROW MORE STRIKES, DAMNIT!’ type guy.

Whenever I think of Dave Duncan, I think of the way Harrison Ford described George Lucas in Empire of Dreams. “It’s right there on the paper, DO IT!”

If anyone watched BBTN Saturday night...

You saw Buck Showalter’s absurd MLB realignment plan. I dismissed it as filler at the time, but now Steve Berthiaume has written a column asking us to seriously consider it.

Before I get to the absolute worst part of it, here are a few of its “intricacies”:

  • He wants to contract the Marlins and Rays. The former has two world titles and is building a brand new stadium, while the latter went to the World Series LAST YEAR.
  • He wants to ditch the AL and NL and go with four divisions made up of seven teams each. The AL and NL have only been around since 1901 and 1876 respectively, so no big deal.
  • He wants every team in the league to play every other team in the league six times – three home, three away. So every team is playing the exact same schedule.

Which brings us to the sheer overall lunacy of it. His playoff system is sort of open to opinion, but in any construction, it involves four division winners and wild card teams.

So my question is this: what in the hell is the point of divisions and wild card winners if everyone is playing the same schedule? You’ve already ditched the two leagues, so why not just have one division league-wide, and take the eight (or however many playoff teams you want) teams with the best record? In his setup, you’ll likely be rewarding a team who wins a weaker division over a team who played in a stronger division. And again, these teams played THE EXACT SAME SCHEDULE.

So what’s the point? Well there’s this:

Buck’s plan also creates true regional divisions with true regional rivalries.

Well that sounds like fun until you consider that’s EXACTLY what we have now.

This really is one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever seen, and it irritated me so much that I just spent twenty minutes typing all this out. I think there’s some tweaks (feel free to discuss) that can me made to the division setup and scheduling, but this garbage is over the top and ridiculous.

I hate the WWL.

V, b.
