Game 123 Overflow Thread

It's the Padres.  We aren't out of this game until Tony calls for Wellemeyer from the pen.  It doesn't matter that he's on the DL or didn't travel with the club.  You can't let the opposition know who is or isn't hurt on the DL.  You can't tip your hand like that.  It gives them too much of an advantage.

I couldn't find any wizard pictures.  Here's a Leprechaun instead.

Smoltz+Garcia=Less innings than a single normal starter next season.

Garcia might hit 30-40 innings this season, and will probably have enough conditioning for less than 100 next season. Smoltz will be lucky to break 100 as well. Assuming you get 200 each from starters 1-3 (a pretty optimistic assumption) you still need someone to pitch 150-200 more innings in the rotation. PJ or Boggs or even Otto could still break out and take care of that problem, but I won’t exactly be heartbroken if Pineiro just accepts arbitration.

Did you all see that guy that just pitched the eighth for the Padres?

That’s the guy I wanted the Cardinals to get when they were talking about right handed bullpen help. Maybe next year…..

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
Oh, and could you get Mike Adams for the bullpen, please?

by jillsinmo on Aug 22, 2009 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

I missed it

Inning was too fast!

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. by Smokin Turkeys on Aug 22, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I know.

Almost no one ever does. When I mentionend him before the trade deadline, it was, oh, small sample size, oh, there’s always good bullpen arms, and I know all that. But Admas has been virtually unhittable all season-his season started in June because of an injury. I think Jeremy Affeldt is the only other 8th inning guy that’s been better.

He probably wasn’t even available. Even the Padres want to have a chance to win a game when they have a lead in the 8th.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
Oh, and could you get Mike Adams for the bullpen, please?

A lot happened to my family that summer

and the only constant, keeping us together, even while we were apart, was Mac.

Besides the fact it was the summer after high school and all the highinx that come with that and my friends before finally moving out on our own, that home run chase always on in the background of our lives was absolute perfection. I can’t imagine a better summer.

I was 11

and it was what made me realize I was gonna be a huge baseball fan.

I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

OT: With the Favre situation....

I’m waiting for Brad Childress to pull a “Replacements”….

After losing the first three games of the season, he looks into the camera and says “This team needs heart. Heart” (and points to his chest with a rolled up bunch of papers.

They then pan to Rosenfels and Jackson running out of the tunnel……..

Btw, that would be some funny shit….

ok

im starting to think that bradley does indeed get hosed on some calls…. he’s got a great eye (love him or hate him) and i really thought that he got rung up on a ball there

Really tempted to get a blue one with a white ‘L’.

Some doofus over at BCB

opines that if the Cubs can go 34-8 for the next 42 games, they can still “win this thing.”

Unless Pujols gets his shit together

he’s going to lose the MVP to Hanley Ramirez, which may not mean much (FLAGS FLY FOREVER) but it was utterly inconceivable a month and a half ago.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 22, 2009 2:06 AM EDT reply actions

It sounds crazy BUT

I really think Albert needs 2-3 days of rest (in a row) to heal up a little and to maybe clear his mind a little. If I were Tony I would sit him out a series. Maybe sit him for a couple of games vs. the Nationals next weekend. With a 7 game lead I think I could live with Albert getting a little extra rest right now so he can gear up for the final month/playoff push.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Aug 22, 2009 5:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Lohse is going to be the most hated Cardinal here real soon

and in the next season if he doesn’t start to get his shit together. Going to be interesting to see if he can stay healthy for more than 10 starts next season and what might happen IF Duncan is gone.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Aug 22, 2009 5:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't mind Lohse

I wanted him traded at the deadline last season but now that they’ve extended him, I don’t dislike him like Wellemeyer or Kip Wells.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 22, 2009 5:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't hate him either

I’m pretty much chalking this year up as being unlucky for him and being stopped by freak injuries. I’m just praying that this will be a one year deal and he will be a good #3 starter next year. Although patience will start to wear real thin for many and probably myself if he doesn’t start to perform to the way he should that earned him that big contract. Not too worried……yet.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Aug 22, 2009 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Lohse has been fucking unlucky

Don’t be hatin’. It’s not like his reasons sound like Wellemeyer’s, who I’m sure still feels ‘good’.

Albert not too happy with Boog tonight...

From Leach’s article on mlb.com:

Pujols didn’t mince words.

“That’s it,” he said. "[Ryan] should have gone. There’s nothing else to talk about. I did my part and he didn’t do his part.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
