Game 108 Overflow

That umpire just gave the entire Cardinal Nation a swift kick in the groin.  The 3-0 pitch to Joe Thurston was a blatant ball low and away.  Joe Thurston then proceeded to swing at bad pitches for strikes 2 and 3.  The 1st strike wasn't his fault but that doesn't absolve him of the bad at bat after that.

Still, as an umpire, you just can't screw up a call that badly. Norris-v-thurston_medium

i've said it twice today already

but i hate our approach at the plate right now

we consistantly take the first pitch as a very hittable strike, then we decide to swing at a bunch of low and away stuff resulting in pathetic groundouts!

The thought that I have is that the season is over. And that everybody in the game; a fan, a coach, a player, a manager, front office, scouts...surrender. They say, "that's enough," especially after a game like this. But then Christmas comes, New Years, contracts are signed, trades are made, free agents are signed; and then baseball, like the rose beneath the April snow will force it's way to the front again. And we'll have the fever once more.

because if he walks, no harm,

but if he singles, then ludwick has gained an extra base. of course you risk a DP for a linedrive out or a strikeout/throw him out, like what happened, but i think its a fair risk.

however, maybe it wasnt worth the risk since we are down by 2, not 1. i dunno. i dont mind the call though.

When the guy who’s had pretty much the same swing for eight years — hurt or not, under pressure or not, tired or not — suddenly does something differently, we ought to know why.

It could be anything from catastrophic to temporary. That’s my real worry… no one is indicating that they know.

I should say, though… that is not going to change how much I like Albert. His baseball smarts will remain impressive long after his body’s broken down. It’s a pleasure to watch him anywhere outside of the box.

200' fences? really?

I played at Big League Dreams, League City, Tx, and the fences were 315’ to the corners. Which, coincidentally is the same distance to LF at MMP.

"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter

by spants on Aug 2, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

While true

it is still MUCH more on Alberts shoulders. He is the franchise player, he is the run producer, he gets paid the most money, it is his job to produce more so than other players.

He failed miserably today.

by dcfcblues on Aug 2, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

True.

But I think we forget that Albert is human. He is one guy on the team. Yes, he’s the biggest guy on the team, but he’s still just one guy.

Nearly the entire team had a shit approach at the plate. So it’s not just Albert slumping; it’s Albert slumping when everyone else is swinging at everything.

"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter

by spants on Aug 2, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

the whole team sucked at the plate today, but that’s what a franchise player is for, to come through when the rest of the team sucks. Which is why I feel this loss is on Albert.

Just as this loss is on Albert, there are many many wins from the first half of the season that were on Albert as well.

It goes both ways.

by dcfcblues on Aug 2, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I just think we’ve been majorly spoiled. We’re all a little freaked by what’s going on with the mang. But some of us are being a little bratty about it.

I’m not going to assign losses to him because it’s a meaningless exercise when everyone sucked. It’s a meaningless exercise when you think about where this franchise would be without him. I guess I’m just going to cut him some slack because, well, he’s more than earned it.

That sucks for him

But it’s not that big of a blow for the Brewers. He wasn’t exactly lighting it up this year, with a stat line of .264/.335/.433 and an OPS+ of 102. That’s almost exactly league average.

Apparently David Cook gave up a home run to Albert Pujols in an American Legion Baseball game.
