SHELBY MILLER IS A CARDINAL!

The long awaited moment, via tweet (courtesy matt leach)

RT @JonathanMayoB3 Source tells me Shelby Miller has indeed agreed to terms with #stlards. No. 19 pick in #mlbdraft will indeed get $2.9 mil from web

Star-divide

That's a little more than twice the slot. It's an exciting time to be a cards fan. The team had a very good draft this year. They signed a higher-ceiling pitcher than I can remember. They paid large sums for Wagner Mateo, as well.

good news

it will be fun to follow his progress next year

apparently, he won’t be pitching for an affiliate this summer/fall

My first memory of Cardinals baseball is seeing Darrell Porter jump into Bruce Sutter's arms on October 20, 1982!

Hah...

what a tool! What happened to $4 million or I’m an Aggie!? Get a new agent buddy… No one believed you were ever going to spend a year in the armpit of Texas over a few hundred grand.

Please take this comment in the spirit it was intended.

well if he would have started with..

“$2.9 million or I’m an Aggie…” he would have only got 1.8 Million.

I’m glad Mo was able to sign the pick and pay less than I was expecting him to.

We paid top 5 money for a top 5 talent (?)...

Baseball is the only major sport where you can essentially decide what number draft pick you want.

If anybody ever got exactly

what they negotiated for initially, then they probably lowballed themselves. All that matters is that it got done.

Let’s hope the finished product ends up closer to his ceiling than his floor. We’ve definitely got something to dream about again at the very least.

Even Boras doesn't get the number he starts with.

$2.9M is significantly more than he was going to make as an Aggie. His value is so high now, that he and his agent both know there are a lot more ways for his value to go down between now and his junior year than go up. He signed at twice the slot value, and now he has the opportunity to start his earning power 3 years earlier. This is a smart move for him.

With Shelby in the ranks, what's our top 10?

My quick stab:

1. Jaime Garcia
2. Shelby Miller
3. Daryl Jones
4. Wagner Mateo
5. Eduardo Sanchez
6. Daniel Delasco
7. David Freese
8. Blake Hawksworth (qualify?)
9. Joe Mather (qualify?)
10. Brian Anderson (injury push him out?)

This was off the top of my head, but I think Garcia’s proximity to the Majors plus potential gives him a slight nod, imo. Also, not sure if Shelby should be 2, 3, or 4. An argument can be made either way.

number 1

Because Garcia will start next year and not be a prospect?

agreed, but I figured since he still hasn't "made it"

he deserves the top spot.

Maybe scraping into the 20.

Depending on how Garcia does in Memphis

his next few starts I think he may push himself up into the #1 discussions but right now I think Miller has that spot and probably won’t pitch the rest of the year so he won’t be “losing” it.

Hey Mather,Hawksworth,Freese, shouldn't be on there IMO.

Mather(too old now I think)
Hawksworth (I think he won’t qualify anymore)
Freese(Too old again he’ll be 27 next year)

Hawk qualifies as of today.

He’s like 1 inning off, however.

I'd go for the following:

1: Jones (still)
2: Descalso (despite rough few weeks at AAA, I’m still a believer)
3: Garcia
4: Miller
5: Lynn
6: Craig (MLB-ready bat, probably low-ish ceiling but he’s a legit top 10er in my opinion)
7: Henley
8: Freese
9: Stock
10: Sanchez (Eduardo)

I didn’t include Boggs or Hawksworth due to the fact they’re playing significant roles with the MLB team; both would probably be around about #10 if they weren’t (I like Sanchez but relievers aren’t worth a great deal and they do have a high flame-out rate, so I’m not hugely comfortable with him at #10).

Mather shouldn’t be near any top 10 lists until he’s proven his career isn’t over, IMO. I’m also a bit antsy on Freese, given his age, but with our relative lack of minor league talent (at least until some of this year’s picks come on a bit) a guy who’s probably a 1-2 win 3B at MLB level probably makes the top 10.

I disagree with any list that includes Wagner Mateo in the top 10. Even in a talent-starved system, I’m just not sure I consider a 16 year-old who’s barely taken a hack in pro ball and who won’t be in the majors for 6+ years to be a prospect. I’d say he’s got a very good CHANCE of becoming a top prospect – a prospect-prospect if you will.

$2.9mn is a coup...

… the Cards have now signed every single pick, right? that, plus Mateo, equals a good season for the re-construction of the farm.

1-15 - signed every one. we haven't signed 16 or 22, then another 5 or so late picks.

So, if the other 7 on that list don't sign by 12 a.m. tonight

then we won’t sign them at all, yes? Or is it just the first rounders? I kept looking for Mateo on that list, until I recalled he was a 16-year old free agent (who we signed for more than Miller).

Miller and Mateo help make up for losing Wallace, IMO. Have a chance to grab some guys next year with the arby picks as well.

btw I voted "a dud"

simply because (statistically speaking) that’s by far the likeliest ultimate result of drafting a high-ceiling, low-floor, rough-around-the-edges college pitcher. The very fact that he has a CHANCE of being an ace makes him better than pretty much every pitching prospect we’ve drafted in recent years, but by far the likeliest result is that he won’t end up doing anything in the majors.

I don't understand what

point you’re trying to make.

The options are “Dud,” “Injury Victim,” “Reliever,” and “Ace.” I didn’t vote for those because there is no grey area (except that most pitchers end up injury victims). What’s wrong with hoping Miller is at least an effective major league pitcher?

If you want to talk about Wellemeyer, or discuss the meaning of effective, go right ahead.
