Fuego is right

It would make no sense to just use the score when the delay is called. That would be incredibly unfair to the Cards in this game. They haven’t had a chance to bat.

by OCCardsFan on Aug 16, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

From Wiki:
* If the game has completed the top half of the 5th inning and the home team is ahead, the game can be deemed an official game. The home team is declared the winner, and the game officially counts in standings.
    * If the game has completed the bottom half of the 5th inning and either team is ahead, the game can be deemed an official game. The leading team is declared the winner, and the game officially counts in standings.
    * If the game has completed the 5th inning, and the teams are tied, the game is considered suspended, and the resumption of the game is scheduled for a future date (usually the following day). The game picks up from where it left off.
    * If neither of the previous three scenarios apply, the game can not be deemed official. The umpire declares “No Game,” and a make-up of the game is scheduled for a future date. The statistics compiled during the rained out game are not counted.

Is that a new rule?

because I have a hard time believing it

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

by Smokin Turkeys on Aug 16, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

me too

according to wikipedia we would lose

  1. If the game has completed the top half of the 5th inning and the home team is ahead, the game can be deemed an official game. The home team is declared the winner, and the game officially counts in standings.
  2. If the game has completed the bottom half of the 5th inning and either team is ahead, the game can be deemed an official game. The leading team is declared the winner, and the game officially counts in standings.

by Cedar Plank on Aug 16, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

you are interpreting it wrong
If the game has completed the bottom half of the 5th inning and either team is ahead, the game can be deemed an official game.

this just means that if the visitor is ahead after the bottom of 5 and it gets called they win or if it was tied going to the bottom of the 5th and the home team scores the visitor doesn’t get to bat.

Chuck Norris doesn't need a bat.

he just roundhouse kicks the ball out of the park.

by bearcatcardfan on Aug 16, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

But then there's this:

4.12.5

(5) Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and
before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more
runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead;

This is a regulation game, because it has gone five innings. But, while an inning was in progress and before the inning was completed, the Pads scored, and the home team has not retaken the lead — then it’s a suspended game

I think this is just an unnecessary ambiguity in the rules. I believe it must mean that the home team has had at least one at-bat and has not retaken the lead.

Anyway if Rule 4.12.5 applies here as it seems to read, the game would be suspended, to be completed later.

by Smokin Turkeys on Aug 16, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

if I'm not mistaken

if the game is actually called (which will not happen anytime soon) the score reverts to what it was after the last full inning. The rain started in the middle of the 6th. After the end of the 5th, the score was Cards 4, Pads 3.

I don’t think they’ll call the game. It might not be completed until 10 o’clock though…..

by nota bene on Aug 16, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's accurate --

used to be anyway. But in this situation, where they would have to erase the leading run from the visiting team, umps will be way, way reluctant to call the game, even if completing it takes hours.
