Rams game

Had to switch to Cards pregame instead of Rams preseason game. Good choice so far. Dinner in front of me. Franklins to the side. Let’s go Wainwright!

I'm not an advocate of off days in any way

but yesterday’s baseball-free day provided some great (sometimes vaguely) baseball-related entertainment from the great article to the slew of awesome comments. I love this site.

My favorite is to skip class in order to watch afternoon games. Or on the rare chance I have a night class, I wind up missing 1/3rd to 1/2 the semester. Gotta do it now since I won’t be able to skip work later..

Understands me when I say “Busch Beer and easy-drinking Busch Light”.

Speaking of frosty adult beverages, the theater we’re watching “Ponyo” in tonight — Tivoli — has several brews in bottles available for sale. If I imbibed, I would love this place even more. Nice classic architecture, nothing but intelligent films (also showing “Hurt Locker”, which I’ve been meaning to go see), great old movie posters with a St Louis connection — sharp.

OT: Pi for dinner

Got in a day early for the MAG, and headed over to the Loop for dinner and a movie with the Evil Twin. Had seen an article on Pi, having made pizza for Obama both before and after the election, so when the concierge mentioned them, that’s where we headed.

Tried their South Side Classico — living in Chicago has given us some perspective — and thought that their small pie was very tasty but a bit pricey (+NA drinks and dessert for two = $37). Probably more value for the large. Ate outside, not hot, plus the bird watching was quite enjoyable.

Heading down the street to Tivoli to watch the new Mayazaki film, Ponyo (really enjoy animated movies, as long as they’re not too kiddie). Let all that are coming to the MAG know how it was.

Don't argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. - anon.

…bunting in that situation is NOT aggressive…it is an inherently conservative strategy that reduces potential run output. Plus, Colby hit two ropes off that guy in the first…but sure have the kid lay one down!!! BTW I was out of the room and only heard that he bunted but was it a sac or a drag?

Well there's a big fucking difference...

…if he squared around late and tried to drag one, he’s trying to get a hit and w/ Colby’s speed its a little defensible, plus it likely comes from the player and not the bench. If he just squared around and put it down, that’s a sac and is probably called from the bench…that is the one that is REALLY indefensible.

Ever heard the Radio Shack song?

Lyrics…

Sung to the tune of “Love Shack” by the B-52s.

I'm dumb, she's a lesbian. I thought I had found the one.
We were good as married in my mind, but married in my mind's no good.
Pink triangle on her sleeve let me know the truth.

He got a rude awakening in Colorado

He found out that some teams will only pay one guy at a time, then the owners made him seem like a malcontent for refusing to sign at about 30 mil under market, that was a reason he was traded as soon as the season ended. He seems like a loyal guy and is obviously enjoying being a cardinal. As a Holliday fan I really hope he stays there, and I hope his friends and family explain that in NY he would be just another player in St Louis he has HOF potential.

I disagree

He should be, while there are leads to pad him. He’s not going to see Major League hitting against his pitches. And for a while it looked like he had his new pitches working, just the pitch selection was wrong.

But you’ve made up your mind, so whatever. I can cite all the examples I want, you’re gonna stick to your guns.

So you're blaming the pitch selection?

Every pitch he is throwing is being launched. How is he supposed to gain confidence? His breaking pitch hangs, gets smashed. His fastball is straight, gets smashed.

Where is this confidence supposed to come from if he can’t get anyone out?

by dcfcblues on Aug 14, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Because instead of focusing on locating his fastball

he’s spent the last 3 months trying to learn upwards of 4 new pitches. Release points and grips are different for him from pitch to pitch and that is going to effect his ability to develop more command of his fastball.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 14, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't even know why I'm replying.

Look, scroll back to my comments all thread long. I am looking at the confidence he used to have. I am not seeing it anymore. He is mysteriously not making the pitches that he did have mastery of, and I have a problem with that, the END.

Not run margin at end of inning?

One time at Wrigley

I went to a rainy pittsburgh v. cubbies game. I got there when the gates open, but there was no BP, so they were taking swings in the cages under the OF bleachers. Kelly Clarkson was ringing out of that garage door in the RF bleachers during the pirates session in the cages. I was standing next to a pirates fan next to the field. I began to hear the music and said in a snarky voice, “Is that Kelly Clarkson coming from the pirates batting cage?” The fan replied, “That’s embarrassing.”

I know I'm beating a dead (and decaying) horse...

But the current state of Baseball Tonight is saddening.

Steve Berthiaume is beyond terrible as a host, and the analysis, if even accurate, is simplistic at best.

MLB Network isn’t great, but it’s night and day compared to ESPN’s slop.
