September 1st Callups
Who, if anyone, will be joining the big league squad after the first? With Memphis in a tight race and likely bound for the PCL playoffs and Springfield already in the TL playoffs, that will complicate things. I'd like to get some other thoughts. Post in the comments who you think will be called up after 9/1. I'll jot down some likely names:
Jaime
Welly (off the DL)
Walters
Glaus
Craig
Hoffpauir
Stav
Sugar Shane
T Greene
Mather
Anyone else you think that might be added to the 40-man? By my count (according to mlb.com), we only have 37 players on the 40.
I think for sure at some point you will see Garcia, Glaus (to see if he is recovered), Walters,Shane, Greene, and Welly. I hope to see Allen Craig and Hoff.

I don't see Craig getting the call
It’d make me happy, though.
Guys like Bradley are exactly why we can't have a pumpkin patch anymore.

Remember when Joe Mather might have been the starting third baseman this year?
Ah, the halcyon days of excessive third base depth.

i doubt we see mather.
He’s not likely to be well.
Freese is an important name. It would be nice to see what he can do before we think about de rosa in the offseason.same with jaime garcia – it could help a lot if we knew what he’s capable of.
Pagnozzi is pretty likely – having a third catcher will let tony pull molina in blow outs and not have to worry about what happens if la rue breaks his thumb on a foul tip.
Could see mark hamilton, jon jay, tyler greene, allen craig, kinney, scherer (if he’s not worth a sept callup, why is he on the roster?), walters, hoffpauir, stav, shane, glaus, ottavino, maybe even sanchez. You won’t see all these guys, but I think those are probably all the possibilities.

It'll be interesting to see
how the 40-man shakes out. hamilton, craig, jay, sanchez, and ottavino are not on the 40. Sanchez, hamilton, and craig have to be in the minds of Mo a & Co. Will we see some DFA’s? Maybe Scherer, or even kinney? Pags would also have to be an add, but I think you are spot on in your analysis. TLR loves him some 3rd catcher.

I wouldn't mind seeing Craig and Hamilton
potentially useful bench bats from both sides. Walters should be transitioned to the pen IMO, so I want to see him in that role in september. Kinney is a possible, but I’d like to see him sort out the control issues first.
Garcia should be an absolute definite if he’s healthy. I feel he’s the only AAA depth guy who might actually be any sort of impact arm from the pen.

If Mather isn't coming up, he should go to the 60 day DL
and open up a spot on the 40-man to protect another player…

60 day dl
only useful for adding another player in September. Per Cot’s Contracts glossary
There is no limit to the number of players a club may put on the 60-day list, but a player may not be placed on (or transferred to) the 60-day list unless the club’s 40-man roster is full. Once the season ends, a player on the 60-day disabled list must be reinstated to the 40-man roster or designated for assignment

Garcia
Interests me alot. I was fairly impressed with him last year during his short time on the roster. I wish he were a little farther into rehab, but depending on what Lohse and our 5th SP do the rest of the month, he may be an option. He is probably only good for 4-5 innings, but 4-5 good innings is better than 5-6 not so good ones.
Glaus will be up, obviously.

Him and Hawk can just both have starts that day
Garcia starts and goes 4-5 and then Hawk comes in and goes the other 4-5

Wouldn't Hawks arm need to be stretched back out
to be able to throw 5 innings. How many starts has he made in the last two months?

Hawk is in the pen for the rest of the year

do you think he stars next year?
waino did it but it’s an uncommon thing to do.

it's possible
it’s really not all that uncommon for a minor league starter to get called in for bullpen duty in the middle of one season and then move to the rotation the next year.

No
I think he has stuff better suited for the pen. I don’t think he can make it longterm as a SP.

Hawk has replaced Motte, imo
Considering Motte threw in mop-up duty last night, I think Blake is going to be getting more calls in tight situations.

my guesses on each of the listed
Jaime: probably. has pitched okay in both AAA and the majors. could be a nice alternative to mcclellan or motte.
Welly (off the DL): whatever
Walters: i’m going to say they’ll let ’em stick in out with memphis
Glaus: still don’t think he’ll come off the dl this season
Craig: no, same reason as walters
Hoffpauir: yes, has had time in the majors and more or less done his job. could spell skippy/lugo/boog if/when the cardinals have the division locked up
Stav: yes, has spent time with the big club and, like hoffpauir in the infield, could spell holliday and/or ludwick down the stretch
Sugar Shane: no, hasn’t played well enough at either level
T Greene: no, same reason as walters and craig
Mather: no, injured
freese is another name to add to the list, but i think he stays with memphis as well. also, what happened to josh kinney, was his name taken off the 40-man?

I'm flabbergasted that Schu has been starting against lefties all year
when he has been down in the minors. So logic doesn’t necessarily dictate the Cardinals moves nawmsayn.

Skip and LHP
skip only has 89 PAs in 52 games against LHP. This doesn’t translate into too many starts. A quick review looks like 11 or 12 starts against LHP. Skip has started 91 of 117 games at 2B and with Lugo on the team probably won’t see another start at 2B against LHP.

Lugo
has made hoffpauir more or less redundant, IMO. I quite like the guy but I don’t really see where he fits in. I’d rather have a better bat (Craig) or someone who can be used as a defensive replacement (T Greene).

I will cry in my beer if they don't call up Craig
I just don’t see what else he can do to prove he deserves a shot. What are they saving him for? He will be what, 26 next season? If he hasn’t been traded he better be called up or it will be yet another check in MO’s con column.
Someone just needs to persude me they are doing the right thing concerning Craig.

FO has decided they don’t want to jeopardize making him a Super Two next year. Need to keep him from arbitration until he’s 30.

He wouldn't be super two next year if he's called up now
He’d have one year and a month

If he was a "Super Two" Candidate
He would be batting third tonight, not September 1st.
Cardinals are going for it this year. They aren’t concerned about something as trivial as the arbitration clock…

Well I see most relief guys coming up.
we might need some fresh arms or just some fillers for blowouts like motte did tonight.
I see …
kinney ( bad this year but he might figure it out)
Scherer (a 3.03 ERA isn’t bad in AAA but he would just be filler)
jaime but I thinks it’s like 50/50 you don’t want him in such high pressure situations so soon after injury where his arm falls off again(ie carp and mulder are examples)
Walters
Salas(same as Jaime no high pressure innings but he could be put in if he proves himself. Last year he was beastly in springfield)
Craig
Glaus
Tyler Greene
Pagz
HOff
I was too lazy to check if they were on the 40 man roster but if 37 out 40 were correct I think it should fill the rest.
And Just for fun will any waiver deals happen or are we sticking with what we have?some guys who cleared waiver that we can go after Aubrey Huff(hey who said another bat couldn’t help? and I believe he has an option), David Robertson(one of my favorites his AAA stats were great and he’s only 24 ), Danys Baez(can close and start if needed), John Smoltz(#5?)
by CodyG on Aug 15, 2009 4:40 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Baez seems a decent fit
and I guess it takes very little to land him.

Pujols did sniff AAA
but only 15 PA there. No AA either. It is just ridiculous that he had only 15 PA above A ball.
I really wish I could have seen him in the AFL that year, he must have been awesome.
