Magic Numbers (Updating Daily!)

Want to count down the Cardinals magic number but don't want to jinx it? Have no fear! Simply refer to Cardinals history: Use jersey numbers!

For example: Right now, September 26, the magic number is HOLY CRAP THE CARDINALS CLINCHED THE DIVISION!

You can find all the facts from the last month and half of doing this right here.

And, to wrap up ... Kerry Robinson! (If it's your pleasure, 00 Omar Olivares.) Or for my pleasure ... just watching videos and looking up photos from last night and planning for the postseason ... with the magic number at zero, I choose, at last, to look forward rather than backward.

Thank you for letting me do this. This was incredibly fun. GO BIRDS!

Best,
Will

my other objection

is that the last time they did this, they blew up a stadium.

Is that what we really want? Really?

Then again, I doubt she’s ever heard of Rogers Hornsby. (Her reaction to him would be “Rogers? Not Roger? WTF?”)

Apparently he didn't for almost all of his time with the Cardinals,

but he did wear 4 for one year. He also wore 4, 9, 11, and 16 at various times with the Browns and Cubs. That is, if Baseball Almanac is to be believed.

by BTown Birds fan on Aug 12, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it is odd, tho...

… since the Cards retired his “number” and put him on the LF wall, but they didn’t actually assign a # to him. didn’t wanna piss off Yadi?

I have heard

That the number four was for his position, not a number he actually wore on a Cardinals uni.

Andujar and Tudor

both wore #30? But they played together on several Cards’ teams. Did Andujar switch his number when Tudor arrived?

Boy, that Joaquin Andujar was some kind of crazy. Carlos Zambrano and Julian Tavarez only aspired to be Andujar-crazy! There was nothing more fun than watching him swing the bat. A switch hitter who’d bat lefty against lefty or righty against righty if he felt like it. And he’d take the wildest swings anyone’s ever seen! Fun! And TUDOR was the one who punched the fan!

I would like to nominate Terry Moore for # 8.

He spent his entire 11 season career with the Cardinals from 1935-1948. During that time the Cards finished 1st in the NL 2 times and 2nd 6 times. Moore was an All-Star four consecutive seasons from 1939-1942. With a career OPS of .739 as an OF, Moore was by no means a great player. But he was known as an outstanding CF and he did miss three prime years of his career (1943-1945, age 31-33) serving in WWII. Moore was the first in a great line of CF defenders for the Cards and he played for a World Series champion in 1942. Anyway, Moore is my pick for # 8.

It is a great illustrated poster. Anyway, I was thinking that I remembered it saying that Moore was also the MVP of that Series. I may be mistaken, and they may not have even named Series MVPs back then.

Thanks for making me remember that!

I still think that Moore is the best # 8 the Cardinals have had. Glad you got a chance to reminisce.

My personal favorite Shannonism is one I’ve never seen in lists…Cards had a runner on second or third, and the batter (it might’ve been Mike Matheny, which gives you an idea of when this happened) dumped one down the right field line that fell in for a single, and the runner made it home. Mike called it thusly (more or less):

“That ball’s gonna get down, and the Cardinals win it!”

It was the bottom of the second inning.

Keep on rockin’, Moonman.

Also, similarly...

there was a Channel 5 broadcast at some point this season, specifically when I cannot recall, where Jay Randolph commented on a pitch being crushed, that he lost it in the sky. The reason he was unable to find the batted ball however was because it was popped up into the seats behind homeplate.

The real question to ask is...

Did the Cardinals end up winning the game? If they were winners, then I see no problem with Shannon announcing it in the 2nd inning.

Could it have been that he thought that since Matheny got a hit (not known to be anything to write home about offensively), that the rest of the lineup would be hitting everything so the Cards would coast?

And you guys relate this great insight to a drinking problem…I think it’s a drinking answer.

Simmons trade

Gotta disagree on the Simmons trade. With no Dave LaPoint, the Cards probably don’t win the ’82 Series. David Green made key contributions that year, too.

by raisin1 on Aug 30, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well, yeah ...

But the centerpiece of that trade was Green: He’s the reason Herzog made it. And that didn’t work out well at all. On a pure exchange of talent basis, we got hosed.

But we’re the ones who got the rings. So we win.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s

so I was quite familiar with Flood. What he did and what he went through was a by-product of the times, and he paid dearly for it. Many baseball historians look at Andy Messerschmidt as the catalyst for free agency, but in actuality, it was Flood. Every MLB player today, and in future years, should bow down to the memory of Curt Flood.

by cardsrul on Sep 2, 2009 3:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

god I wish today's athletes had the same type of political and societal convictions as the players of the 60's

Athletes today have more money and more media exposure, and while I’m aware of the good that a lot of athletes do for their communities and charities (the Shaq vs. show seems to basically be a showcase of how good a lot of guys are off the field), yeah, I can’t imagine too many players saying anything remotely worthwhile about the times we live in like that. Back then players seemed to take pride in the fact that being an athlete gave them a chance to better their lives, and to become better people. That’s why I love it more and more when I read about things like the Iranian soccer players who got banned and things like that.

… he got blackballed and had to play in Europe. and that was 5 years before 9/11. even Curt Shilling took a lot of flak for his political statements, and they were pretty benign.

one of the by-products of winning free agency for players is that there is a lot more money at stake, hence much more at risk for taking political stands.

Which is funny, because that is partly a byproduct of Flood. There’s a hell of a lot more to lose. So many prefer to either not worry about that stuff or to just keep it to themselves. A Google Maps search of Lucas, AR . . .

comes up with THIS fancy picture (may not show for IE, but anyway go to http://maps.google.com/ and type “Lucas, AR”.

As you’ll see . . . there’s a Dizzy Dean Road. Also, no marker for any actual town named Lucas.

Must be about thirty people there.

One day, David Backes and Albert Pujols will combine forces to become the most awesome piece of violent force known to man.

by Donut King on Sep 5, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lots of little towns in those hills

that have 20-30 people in them. I thought the Dean’s came from Yell County but the location on that map is in either Logan or Scott County. Anyway, interesting fact to go along with today’s jersey number/name… Paul Dean’s grandson, Paul, is the principal at the Junior High in my hometown and Paul is buried in the cemetery there.

Paul’s son (I believe) has a little restaurant in Logan County that has plenty of pictures of Dizzy and Paul on the walls. I do a bank audit up there yearly and always enjoy going in and seeing all the stuff.

Reminder for the Cubs series

That our first win against them, the magic number will go down by 3 since we will have won the season series and thus have the tiebreaker.

by trogdor on Sep 8, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

baseball uses tiebreakers?

Wouldn’t they just play an extra game if, God forbid, there ended up a tie? (Assuming of course that one team doesn’t have the wild-card, which, in this case, seems likely.)

by williamfleitch on Sep 8, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, it doesn't work that way...

The tiebreaker only goes into effect when the loser gets in via the WC (e.g. 2001)

The WC race should go down to the final week.

Regardless, that sort of thing is never factored into the magic number

The Cards Magic Number for the Cubs = 163 – Cards Wins – Cubs losses

13 will probably get skipped anyway

Jeff Fassero was off the list before I had a chance to comment, but you could go with Neil Allen, um, never mind. No really, since 13 has always been my favorite number, I knew Joe Ferguson wore 13 throughout his career including his time with the Cardinals in 1976. I was in the front row of the upper deck at Busch ("Straight A" tickets, do they still do that?) when he hit a shot off Tom Seaver (maybe?) that was coming right to me. I leaned over the rail and watched it bounce off the concrete wall just inches below my reach. I was lucky I didn’t get my fingers crushed or fall over the railing or something.

Jean-Baptiste, the only bookie in Quebec who would traffic in bets on

le baseball cried many a tear over this decision.

The Montreal Expos had grown tired of an aging, ineffective and perpetually obnoxious Pete Rose, and they planned to release him. Upon hearing this, the Reds, who were interested in having Rose be their player-manager (GREAT idea, by the way), offered to send a player to the Expos to spare Rose’s ego.

I blame this current losing streak on Will for complaining about this going at a pace that was too fast. He already tempted the GOB once by finding a loop hole in their rules, but then he spit on them by complaining.

is for the entire team to grow uni-brows as a unifying act. That should at least be worth 3 wins alone. Troy Glaus has made the attempt before…therefore it’s not entirely impossible.

Johnny Mize was totally awesome.

Rally’s WAR list has him at just over 70 WAR for his career. Here are his WAR numbers per year starting at the beginning of his major league career in 1936 until the end of his run of awesomeness in 1948 (and keeping in mind that had to skip ‘43, ’44, and ’45 due to a different kind of war): 4.9, 6.9, 6.2, 7.4, 7.0, 5.4, 6.6, 5.8, 7.3, 6.9. If he had been able to play during that three missed year, putting up 3 more years of 6 WAR or so he’d probably be around 90 WAR for his career.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

really – what teams would you want to trade places with right now? the yankees? the angels? maybe the dodgers (who had a much bigger swoon) or the phillies?

you made a fanpost suggesting we would clinch the season in houston not very long ago. the team is not any different now than it was then. we had a string of bad outings against mostly good pitchers. it happens. if you’re vacillating between clinching the division in two weeks and not making the postseason, that tells me a lot more about you than it does about the team.

The method to this madness...

As of right now, the Cardinals would have a first round match-up against Los Angeles, a team the Cardinals have beaten solidly throughout the year.

Sneaky, sneaky, La Russa…making the team pretend to suck this past week in order to avoid playing the hot pitching/playing wild card hopefuls or the annoyingly good Phillies.

Incidentally, the Cards are now 1-5 since I hopped on a bus and headed up to Chicago…if it gets any worse, I may have to cut my visit short.

I too had a signed Gary Gaetti baseball (also signed by McGee and Lankford, if I remember correctly?) and it too was sacrificed for the greater good…namely, a big pick-up game at the ball field. It still exists and is in use today for the casual game of catch. The signatures, alas, didn’t make it.

That happened with my Grady Little autographed ball

Why did I have a Grady Little autograph, you ask?

Well, in 2006 I went to watch the Cards in spring training. The first game I went to was against the Dodgers. The Cards players had finished warming up, and there was a throng of people trying to get autographs, so I went to the other side of the field and patiently waited along the third base line where Brad Penny and Nomar Garciaparra were warming up. They had no problem ignoring me.

Along comes Grady Little, strutting to the dugout and, noticing the ball in my had, stops, asks for my pen, and signs it for me. I remember thinking, “exactly how do I tell him that I’m not interested in his autograph?” I even tried to come up with a quick, “oh, I don’t want to bother you, Mr. Little, I’m really more interested in Nomar’s autograph,” but instead I just froze, accepted the autograph, and then promptly scuffed it off over the next couple days of playing catch.

As is, with their current play, I’m wary of going to a bar up here on the north side of Chicago to watch. The fans, despite being – what, 8 games out? – will latch on to the Cardinals recent poor play and never stop. This could get ugly…

Brewer fan here:

After weeks of anguish, I’ve decided my rooting priorities for the 2009 playoffs.

It was tough. I don’t hate the Cards like I do the Cubs. Earlier this year, before the Brewers pitchers realized they sucked, I frequently said “anyone but the Cubs” and meant it. But it’s been a rough couple of months and it took a little while to work through my newfound dislike of Cardinal Red.

So here’s my plan: I’m rooting against the Cards during the NL playoffs. Nothing personal. It’s just bitter, bitter jealousy.

But if you make the Series, and you’re playing the Yankees (because I haven’t been able to come up with a realistic scenario that keeps the Yanks out of the Series), I’m going to become a major Cardinal fan. The Cards annoy me. They’re uptight, Pujols ripped on Fielder during the home run contest, blah blah blah.

But the Yankees are just evil. I know you could give two * who a Brewer fan is going to be rooting for in the playoffs… but seriously: if you get the chance, you’ve GOT to beat the Yankees.

Please.

I find it funny that anyone thinks this year’s team is uptight. We’re variously bemoaning and celebrating their utter cheesy joy. Albert included.

by prophetjohn on Sep 19, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually it's more of a non-story.

Waaaaay back during the all-star break (you know, when the Brewers were above .500), they did an on air interview with Pujols during one of Fielder’s rounds in the home run derby (pretty sure it was the first). Pujols was asked about Fielder, and he made the comment that Fielder appeared to have finally stopped trying to hit home runs with every swing. He made some additional comments as well on Fielder as a player. Nothing terrible. But perception among some Brewer fans was that Pujols was talking Fielder down as a hitter. I thought much of the negative reaction had to do with the fact that the Pujols interview was causing the network to cut away from some of the pitches to Fielder.

It really wasn’t a big deal and I’ve never heard anyone other than the occasional Brewer fan comment about it. I threw that and the uptight comment out there because it’s a very stereotypical response (at least this year) to the question of why a paticular Brewer fan dislikes the Cardinals.

And I really do hope you guys beat the Yankees if you get to the series.

Slugging 2nd baseman

There have only been four .700 slugging seasons in Cardinals history. Hornsby has two of them. As great as Albert has been this year, he is “only” slugging .680. The difference could have something to do with the .400 vs. .330 batting averages.

He hit. 403 with 39 home runs and 143 RBIs. His OPS that season was the highest in baseball history by someone not named Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. Also: He was the team’s manager that year.

Fuck. Given this was barely out of the deadball era, and he was a 2B, AND managing the team, I think you could make a case for that being the best season ever, by anyone.

If Hornsby wasn’t such an asshole I think he’d be remembered as the all-time #2 player in baseball.

I'd love to see a throwback jersey game with something like these older uniforms.

I like the current look, but that older font with the more circular “C” is pretty cool I think.

whiteyball!

White Rat was one of my favorite books I read as a kid. I definitely recommend it, especially if you are interested in the 80s cardinals. I think part of the reason I want Jose Oquendo to be manager is that he played for Herzog, and it seems he might have picked up a few things.

love the White Rat, i really wish he had pulled the players off the field in the WS

it would have been EPIC

and i totally agree about Jose, i think he’s had the rare opportunity to learn under two of the best managers the game as ever seen. he should be a pretty good one if given the right situation.

White Rat

I love Whitey, as anyone growing up a Cards fan in the 80s does…but I read both “White Rat” and “You Are Missing a Hell of a Game” in the last five years or so…and unfortunately I came away thinking less of the man…he strikes me as one of the old guys at the coffee shop my grandfather use to frequent…the guys that were absolutely full of shit and only wanted to hear themselves talk. Of course, life is full of these people and I love him in sprite of being a crank.

Red and Stan
Red was most well-known for his fielding at second base; Stan Musial once said he had “the best hands I’d ever seen.” Musial would have had plenty of opportunities to come to this conclusion: The two men were roommates for seven years

I didn’t know Stan the Man liked to switch hit, too.

Red had the perfect nickname for a Cardinal

Red was interviewed earlier this year by a Houston radio announcer and an excerpt was played last night before the game. Red mentioned that he had been teammates with Willie Mays and Hank Aaron and it made me wonder if anybody else was lucky enough to be on the same team as three of the greatest National League players ever.
Later in the interview he said that Roger Craig had approached him and told him that Red was the only one to win a World Series as a player, coach and manager. I guess you could add “Special Assistant to the General Manager” to that list.
Hats off to “the old red head”.

love Red

my aunt got to meet him last summer at one of the little league parks the Cards have been opening all around the city. it was the one named for him. he couldn’t have been nicer. he just walked up to her & started talking to her. i think she took like 5 pics of the day, and if you all want to see them i can try & go find them.

Hard to imagine

A player nowadays doing an acrobatic move before taking the field. Pujols should walk on a handstand to first base.

Like young Will ...

I also used to pretend I was Ozzie. Once, while attempting a diving/sliding catch I landed on a bee. The bee, obviously pissed off, stung 5-year-old me in the leg. It really hurt. I wore No. 1 all through little league and was DEVASTATED when Ozzie retired (I was 11 when he hung them up). Ozzie is my all-time favorite player so part of me is glad we get to have Ozzie day on VEB. If only the Cards could’ve won and the Cubs lost. Oh well.

I can't imagine too many kids didn't idolize Ozzie.

It was always an arguement in my neighborhood who was Ozzie when we played pick up baseball.

The first two players “claimed” were usually Ozzie and Gary Gaetti (I mentioned earlier he went to my high school).

More Ozzie stories

From the NYT

Picture a thinner-than-a-pool-cue boy with a passion for sports living in the Watts section of Los Angeles in the 1960’s. He had five brothers and sisters, but none were interested in sports. So he had to improvise and entertain himself. Unwittingly, he also became his own first coach by devising ways to test himself, improving his hand-eye coordination, his arm strength and his speed.

Smith would lie on the floor of his room, close his eyes, flip a baseball in the air and try to catch it. He would do it over and over, unknowingly teaching himself to develop a feel for the ball.

….

Smith said he was a silly kid who would throw the ball over one side of the slanted roof on his house, then run around to the other side and try to catch it before it landed……‘’For some reason, I thought I was fast enough to do it,’’ Smith said. ‘’I never did. But it was that type of determination that I think helped me develop as a major league player.’’

he would have been – what? 6,7,8? how do you make sense of a race riot at that age?

Thinking of Ozzie and the 80s

In reading about Ozzie, I started to think of the songs I associate with winning Cards teams. I only really remember two songs from the 80s teams associated with the playoffs:

Kool and the Gang – Celebration
Glenn Fry – The Heat is on

If we were to put together a playlist of Cardinals songs associated with winning teams, which songs would be there? In addition to the two I’ve listed above, I’ll add:

Geiger – Colby Rasmus Fire Burning in the Outfield (remix featuring DJ Vexedtechie)

I'll go ahead and throw this out there:

After the Cardinals won in 2006 I watched the final at-bat with “Feels Just Like It Should” by Pat Green about a hundred times. It really only qualifies as a championship song for me, but man does it work.

I idolized Ozzie growing up...and I would play whole baseball games by myself where I was the pitcher

throwing the ball at a stone wall and the ball would bounce in fairly random directions and I would always turn in to Ozzie catching a high liner or dive for the grounder..pop up and throw it to first (or try for the double play).

Like everyone who grew up in St. Louis in the last 30 years or so

I too idolized Ozzie Smith. One of the things I liked most about him was that he wasn’t a very big guy. B-Ref has him at 5’11", 150 lbs. He gave small kids hope.
The 1996 NLCS was absolutely heart-breaking. Ozzie’s last season. A 3-1 lead, squandered. I’ll never forget those shots of Ozzie looking sad in the dugout, watching his career end with a 15-0 killfest that prevents him from reaching another WS before he retires. That is my saddest moment as a baseball fan, and it probably always will be.
On a lighter note, the Wizard is awesome, both Ozzie Smith and the movie about Nintendo. I like to imagine Ozzie talk about how he loves the Gold Glove, it’s so rad.

With the rise of sabermetrics

and the discovery that defense is much, MUCH harder to measure qualitatively than was once thought…I think it really says something that Ozzie is still considered, across the board, to be far and away the best defensive shortstop ever.

I've looked all over the internet for a particular poster of Ozzie

It was to commemorate his Gold Gloves. It was super cheesy too. Basically it was a photo of Ozzie wearing some sort of tuxedo with a cape as if he were a professional magician. The illusion he performed (illusion, not trick; a trick is something a whore does for money… or candy!) was to levitate a Gold Glove with a wand or something. Like I said, it was kind of a cheesy poster, but I remember owning it as a child and have tried to no avail to find it on the web. Anybody recognize this?
