8-1 phils
seriouness in wrigleyville
Chuck Norris doesn't need a bat.
he just roundhouse kicks the ball out of the park.
Just got home from the US-Mex game
Very glad the Cards are up.
And I cannot fault the US for losing 2-1. Damn is Charlie Davies a player. I hope he has a massive break out season in League 1 this year. He’s got the skills, the body, the intensity, and the mind. Wow.
I honestly wasnt expecting them to win
Mexico is tough to beat at home
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring" -Rogers Hornsby
amen
i predicted a 2-1 loss
we played a great game given the conditions:
6000’+
severe smog
105,000 fans
That crowd was incredible
I’d love to see the US have that kind of homefield advantage.
Shut up, Fritz™.
8 and 4 years ago
we had very nice home field crowds for US vs Mexico in Columbus
this past time through… not so much
I was at the ’09 and ’05 columbus qualifiers vs mexico
i thought they were outcoached
the overall strategy was awful

eh?
if you noticed in the first half… boca, dempsey, and donovan were making terrible decisions
that wasn’t coaching… that was lack of oxygen…
both teams do oxygen at half time because of the conditions… it’s nuts
in those conditions you need to possess the ball
playing 60+ minutes in your defensive third is a recipe for disaster, especially at altitude. they were too tired to counterattack all game.

by themanthemyth on Aug 12, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions
the first goal was off a bit of possession
our guys were unable to acclimate to the altitude
so trying to possess aganst mexico in those conditions is asking a bit much
it’s about survival
the first goal was off possession
it was one of the few decent passes made all game. you are right about survival but i don’t think playing in front of your goal the whole game is the best way to go about that. i understand the altitude issues but that doesn’t excuse everything.

by themanthemyth on Aug 12, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions
it doesn't excuse it
but it goes a long ways towards understanding it
boca is not a left back
if you have to play dolo, then spector should be the LB, and boca at CB…drop demerit…i thought he had a real stinker today
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
actually, he is
boca is a left back professionally with the chicago fire, fulham, and now rennes
although i thought we should have subbed spector for boca at various points
i really like the pairing of jay (ball winner, gonzo type guy) and gooch (size, experience, and tactics)
Davies and Altidore could be very serious
Run Vince run! There's a tarp chasing you! Run! It's right behind you!
davies is quickly surprisng everyone
holy jeebus
scored
had the go ahead for 2-1 wrongly called back (he was onsides)
and just missed a third off a cross from dempsey… somehow he was not able to get his head on it
I'm shocked that Mexico would get a favorable offsides call
…actually I’m not.
Run Vince run! There's a tarp chasing you! Run! It's right behind you!
it was a close call
but davies is absolutely electric… donovan with size and a forward
yes, he impressed the hell out of me today
ching? not so much
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
i actually thought ching did his job very well
he isn’t a world beater… but he got some fouls, won some balls in the air, and in general was not a liability
ugh
this is a big sticking point for me…we cannot start brian ching up top if we want to be a big time team…it just isn’t good enough..i know altidore is young and was not match fit…but we will always be on the outside looking in with the mindset that ching is good enough to start fo us
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
he is not the future
altidore, davies, cooper and possibly a couple of others are
but ching offers stability and wisdom
he doesn’t freak out
yea but we all know bradley will play him if he isn't hurt
and i say the future is now…and no thanks to cooper
altidore will never get stability and wisdom as long as ching starts over him
i really think we can do better…i’d rather have dempsey up top with holden on the wing than ching
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
qualifying is about qualifying
it’s not your best team
it’s about getting the job down (top three)
i agree with that
but i think we need to get the guys who should start for the world cup team in ’10 on the pitch now to gain international experience
i really hope ching isn’t starting in south africa next summer
"Albert hits good pitches hard and bad pitches even harder. And when he gets in the batter's box, if you pray, then you start praying. And if you don't pray, you think about starting."--Brian Bannister
he probably won't
but he will make the team
2 of our top four mids were out: jones (stress fracture) and edu (knee surgery from last season)

It's probably going to Lincecum
But i would never count any of them out, (Except Cain, I don’t think he will get anywhere close)
Man, with this outfield, need to get rid of that Rasmus guy. :)
i think the only way carp or waino
Could win is if linececum starts screwing up.linececum has pitched as well or better than either and has done it allyear (not carp) and with ridiculous K numbers. I’d like to see adam and carp get a lot of votes, but I think it’s linececum’s to lose.

If Pedro’s good outing is a resutl of actually good pitching, great defense, bad hitting, or a combination of the 3.

then just about anyone in the history of the game, that I won’t argue, but he hasn;t had a strong throw since he hurt his right shoulder earlier this year. .
Shut up, Fritz™.
I don't disagree...
but just because he hasn’t had a great throw since doesn’t diminish the fact that Kobe really hasn’t show a lot either in the arm dept., at least he hasn’t shown enough to have a better arm in my eye’s.

I just popped in to B-R
Dick has 2 assists this year, and Korkey has 3 (4 last year from Ank).
I believe what I am trying to say is more about Cory than Ank. Until the other night, I had not seen anything impressive, throw wise from Kody. In fact, I have seen some pretty craptastic throws from him earlier in the year and am waiting to be impressed so far by his arm.
Philles announcers about Toronto:
"Well they go out West after this series, this weekend, against the Tampa Bay Rays"
Plus he usually
thinks too much of his arm, like not making the throw to 2nd base tonight. He seems to not think of where he should throw a lot
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring" -Rogers Hornsby
Ankiel has taken some really bad routes to balls lately.
Colby is the better fielder, by quite a bit. Unfortunately, he’s not hitting the ball at all. I’m guessing he’s still being affected by his heel.
What the hell does Ankiel have to do with Colby's current slump?
This statement is nonsensical. Colby hasn’t hit the ball since his heel flared up again. I wasn’t making a play for who should be getting the time, but I think his injury is affecting his play. Just possibly, the guys around him every day know that, and that’s why he’s not in there all the time.
No need for the theatrics Gertrude
If your argument is injuries, then use Ank’s shoulder as well. And if your argument is batting, then look at Ank’s last 40 ABs.
They both have looked bad at the plate.
Sponsored by Slick-Rick 'Stache Cream
What theatrics?
I made an educated opinion as to why I think Colby isn’t seeing the field. You seemed to get your panties in a bunch, apparently thinking I was choosing one over the other. I’m saying that I think they are holding him out of games because the injury is more of an issue than we’re being told. I never said that Ankiel was getting playing time because he’s outperforming Rasmus. You’re arguing with somebody else through me.
My point was to indicate that Ankiel is not that close defensively to Rasmus.
What part of my declarative statement made you believe I was 'getting my panties in a bunch' (overused btw)
Colby hurt > Ank healthy?
Wait….
Am I talking to Al?
Sponsored by Slick-Rick 'Stache Cream
I don't know who in the world you're talking to.
You told me to “look at Ank’s splits before judging Colby’s slump.” That statement had nothing to do with the statement I made. Just because Ankiel has been poor with the bat for the better part of the year doesn’t make Colby’s current slump better. Colby’s splits from B-R
last 7 days .250/.316/.250/.556
last 14 days .148/.273/.148/.431
last 28 days .117/.206/.117/.323
Yeah, those are pretty outstanding numbers. He’s clearly not slumping is he? The fact that this coincides with his heel flare up is probably just that, coincidence. The only reason he isn’t playing is clearly because Tony hates him. That’s the only thing that makes sense.
I never argued that Ankiel is the better option. Take about two weeks of games from him, and his numbers are atrocious. Yes, Rasmus is the better CF. No arguments, nor have I made any.
But maybe, just maybe, the Cardinals think they could really injure their future franchise CF by overplaying him when he’s hurt. Possible, or are you so blind that you don’t think that’s a good enough reason to use the guy sparingly?
(BTW, I find it laughable that a guy that uses the highly overused “Am I talking to Al/Morgan/Kruk/etc.” comments about a cliche used by someone else)
this is my favorite baseball clip of all time...
