well

boggs kept us in it

you can’t expect to win many games with only one run

Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.

by prophetjohn on Aug 11, 2009 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

I always expect 5 or 6 innings

and 3 or 4 runs out of Boggs. That should be enough to keep us in the game if not win it outright with this offense. Should, I stress

Anyway, just shows that Boggs’ start was adequate enough to get us the win. Up to the offense now…

Motte's offspeed pitch (or lack there of...)

I coach at the high school level and the easiest offspeed pitch for young pitchers to use is the spiked curve. I know for a fact that there are many big leaguers that use the same pitch…. why in the hell can’t he even throw that? I don’t mind Motte pitching. But for heaven’s sakes, please teach him a HALF-WAY decent offspeed pitch Dunc.

Sorry, I’ll remove myself from my soapbox.

Me neither

We win 70% of the time he pitches. It is hard to deny the credibility of the team’s W-L record when he pitches. W-L records for individual pitchers aren’t a good way to measure the pitcher but I think that team record when Carp starts really illustrates how good he is. I feel that he sometimes does just enough to win without overexerting himself. I think that he is smart enough and good enough to do that.

Just Curious.....

For those that know the Cardinals farm system better than I do….. do we have a hard-throwing right hander for the bullpen in Memphis? Or do we have to go all the way to AA and pull Samuel?

My two cents: Motte to AAA to work on his offspeed and bring up our next best option of a hard-throwing RHP for the bullpen. I think Hawk should stay in the bullpen as well.

Boggs should stay in the number 5 spot.

The Curse of Scott Rolen! or, scapegoating from the game

Meaning, as awesome as Scotty is, I think he’s here to renew his curse on third base. But first…

1. It’s the bands’ fault. Parkway North and Parkway Central. Boggs came out to warm up at 6:40, right by the bullpen with Yadi. Five minutes later, two marching bands parked themselves in front of the bullpen. And just… stared. Straight ahead. Lurking.

2. Yadi. :(
Like Ankiel’s at-bats, I no longer care why this happens. Only that I expect it to happen, and it will be disappointing every time. It sucked to see it in person. He almost redeemed himself with one swing of the bat, but seriously. I’m rethinking whether he should feel remorse.

3a. The call on the fair/foul ball. W T F.
Later I saw that umpire either dipping or picking at his nails during an at-bat.
3b. DeRosa is good at third. He’s just short.
Literally.
Those were good jumps, as far as I saw. It’s just that Mark is losing the game of inches.
3c. I looked up at one point in the ninth, and the lineup said the leadoff man was: “Glaus, 2B, avg 0.00”

Just before Shaq’s big pitch, DeRo, Pujols, and Holliday were guffawing over something hi-lar-ious in the outfield. Albert was imitating a batting stance. I suspect they were talking about Shaq.

During the playing of God Bless America, Lugo stood by Albert and gabbed away. Albert was… polite. I noted they came out together for their warm-ups. (Albert was later having an animated conversation with an ump. It looked like he was talking about

Boog had a monster foul ball before his hit.

Between innings, Boog was MIA for the warm up tosses, till the last second. Did he forget his seeds or something? …didn’t matter. He barehanded a ball and didn’t miss a beat.

Everyone ignored Puppykicker’s K because they were doing the wave. I think it was mostly to keep awake.
The good news is, Boog singlehandedly stopped the wave with his D.

BOOG. Awesome.

A Wise GM Exists in the NL
An NL general manager made two surprising predictions Tuesday. He said that the Rockies would win the NL West and that the Cardinals would win the World Series.

The Rockies, the GM said, were not great in any one area, but very good in virtually every one. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are short on starting pitching and unlikely to make a significant addition to their rotation.

The Cardinals?

Their offense has been bolstered by the additions of Matt Holiday, Mark DeRosa and Julio Lugo, and their top three starting pitchers — Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright and Joel Pineiro — are as impressive as any in the league.

“I love (the Giants’ Matt) Cain and (Tim) Lincecum,” the GM said, “but are they really better than Carpenter and Wainwright?”

my problem with this scenario

is can the Cardinals beat the Yankees? They already have one pitcher who’s got our lineup’s number.

And, younger talented team tired and intimidated by media pressure in an East Coast WS is something I’ve seen before.

If we’re really talkin’ pipe dreams, we might as well talk that one…

Some things I re-realized last night.....

I was right when I said before the season started that if Motte was closing games all year, we’d lose a bunch of them. He just isn’t there yet. I’m fairly high on him, but he needs some work yet.

Also, TLR/Duncan knew what they were talking about when they said Welly was at least as good an option as Boggs. I’m not sure exactly what Boggs’ problem is, other than not throwing strikes, but he hasn’t been very good at any level this year.

There are 3 things the average man thinks he can do better than everybody else: build a fire, run a motel, and manage a baseball team.

Wellemeyer

is, at best, no better than Boggs. Boggs at least has a chance to be better than Wellemeyer. There’s absolutely no way that Wellemeyer holds the Reds to 4 last night, as Boggs did.

by tom s. on Aug 12, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

to further illustrate

Boggs’s game score last night was 40 — admittedly, not good at all. Wellemeyer has had exactly 1 game score higher than 40 since June 17 — nearly 2 months. This was Boggs’s lowest game score of the season. Wellemeyer has only had 10 game scores higher than 40 out of his 20 starts and, as I said, just 1 in nearly 2 months. There’s no way it can be concluded that Wellemeyer is as good an option as Boggs — at least no OBJECTIVE way! Tony loves them vets, though!

It shouldn't go unnoticed

that Yadi hurt the team’s chances to win by 11.5% yesterday through poor base running. Now, we can blame Oquendo, I guess, for the first one but the 2nd was all him. In other words, Yadi’s base running hurt the team much more than Motte’s pitching — and it’s not even close.

It also shouldn’t go unnoticed that Ankiel’s popup in the 8th lowered the team’s chances of winning that game by more than 5% — and he shouldn’t have even been the batter. It should’ve been Greene. I wonder if anyone even bothered to ask Tony about that one.

Did Boggs' stuff look different last night to anyone?

First, what happened to the 93-94mph fastball with movement? I didn’t see it. He seemed to throwing with a more 3/4 arm slot than I remember.
And his slider lacks good break – it’s sort of flat and frisbee-like.

Bottom line, I thought Boggs stuff was better (or supposed to be) than I saw last night. Kinda disappointing.

What is the frisbee pitch he throws?

Is it his slider? It is like 3 feet off the plate everytime. I don’t know why Yadi thinks he can throw it towards the outside corner. If he wants that pitch, he has to start it AT the hitter.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 12, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

I thought I was paying attention as I was watching and it appeared to me that his fastball was at 90-91 (without much movement). He seemed to throw too much offspeed stuff too (which he couldn’t locate).

Bottom line, I thought his stuff was meh and I didn’t particularly like the game Yadi/Dunc was calling for him. Sure, he “battled,” but that game could have very easily gotten out of hand and the Reds lineup is not all that good.

He lost velocity as the night went on.

He threw 94 to Votto in the 2nd inning, for one instance.

But as the game went on, he threw hardly ANY fastballs. Which, makes me wonder if the fastballs he was throwing from the 4th inning on were all 2-seamers.
