Game 107 Overflow

When Albert slumps, the team looks like it slumps.  He's simply the heart of the offense.  Hopefully this is nothing more than a mental or mechanical hiccup and not portentous of an injury flaring up.

Let's score some runs Cardinals.  No more extras!

I just got a call from my friend

He is engaged to his high school sweetheart. (We are both 22.)

So now I’m like…whoah, marriage.

And I can’t tell anyone because I’m the first one they called (woo!) so none of my friends know. So I’m telling VEB instead.

Anyway…go Cards.

I think about the only way to make it easier

is to use a sort macro.

Here’s one I dug up quick-like. I don’t have a way to test it right now:

Columns(“C:K”).Select
Selection.Sort Key1:=Range(“F1”), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlGuess, _
OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
DataOption1:=xlSortNormal

Assuming C to K are the columns you want to sort by column F

He'd be a great agent...

Holliday is going to make his money anyways. He knows we want him back if he’s anywhere near this good the rest of the season. Ankiel is a marginal client of his with fewer interested teams. This way he uses one of his big fish to make sure a small fish gets his share. That’s exactly what you want in an agent from a players point of view.

by ducttape16 on Aug 1, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Holliday does not seem to be a TOOL to me

If he wants to stay in a Classy place like St. Louis I am sure he will take his deserved 8 to 12 million a year here than 15 to 18 million a year somewhere else. But who knows, maybe I am wrong

by ANDYAK47 on Aug 1, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Holliday is a stand up guy

I just think Boras is such a piece of scum he can make bad things happen. I still think him whispering in Manny’s ear about things screwed that situation up. Since if the options were picked up he got no money out of it… So what better way to get money than blow up that situation and ensure he’d get a decent contract from another team. The man sees the world in dollar signs and nothing else in my opinion.

if he can screw up the Manny – Red Sox relationship so he can make his money, what’s to stop him from playing his clients off each other to get money for the less talented one… I agree he’s very good at making money for his clients… thus why I think things could shake out the way I said. He’s good at his job, but is a creep in doing so.

ump knew he was safe, and got pissed because he threw his helmet.

That was one of the quickest tosses I’ve ever seen; hopefully that ump gets sanctioned, because that was unacceptable behavior from the man in black.

what happened to the Mang? I blame this on the MLB they wanted to use him to showcase the sport and now he seems burnt out.

Although at some point people will fear Matt Holliday and try to pitch to a “slumping” Pujols and then be destroyed for all eternity.

by Devin B on Aug 1, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't understand this

the “win” column should be more valuable; we rate player on “WINS” above, etc, and rate teams on W/L. The W column requires work to achieve, while the “L” column can grow with no input from the team, and a decent team will always have more W’s than L’s. It’s harder to Win, than to Lose.

The answer is, that you can’t make up a game you’ve lost. But we’ve PLAYED more games than anyone else, so far, so if we’re up in the win column, AND we’ve played more games, it gives us the initiative. THEY have to play better than us, to catch up.

exactly

we’re in the position of strength, as far as I can tell. We can afford to lose more games, while losing fewer, with less left to play, giving us the ability to leverage our assets to best influence our ability to win- something we haven’t had, so far. How is that not a good thing?

Cubs Play, Cards Rest days

Here are the Cubs opponents for the days the Cards have an open date

Mon, 8/3 at Reds
Thu, 8/13 Phillies
Mon, 8/31 Astros
Thu, 9/17 Brewers
Thu, 9/24 at Giants

by ubeddie on Aug 2, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Right...

The Cardinals have played 107 games, the Cubs have played 102.

Let’s say the Cardinals went 30-25 over their final 55 games and finished 88-74. 30-25 is a winning percentage of .545.

The Cubs would have to go 33-27 in their final 60 games to finish with the same record. 34-27 is a winning percentage of .550.

So the Cubs have to play better baseball than the Cardinals to win the division. Don’t believe the propaganda.

V, b.

by LukeMP1186 on Aug 1, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

30-25, both, PLUS 3-2 for the cubs.

the end of every half inning IS a turning point. -Evilfrog

by SleepyCA on Aug 2, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

Both figures should say 33-27 for the Cubs, which comes out to .550.

But that would just tie them with the Cardinals. It would take 34-26 to win, which is .a .567 clip.

All that matters is the number of games above the .500 mark. How ever many games above .500 the Cardinals are for the rest of the year, the Cubs have to be one game better to tie, and three games better to win.

V, b.

by LukeMP1186 on Aug 2, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

The loss column is more important

From watching close divisional races up close between the Yankees and Red Sox in the late 90’s and this decade, the Red Sox every year around this time seemed to be “leading” the division but trailing the Yankees in the loss column by 2-3 games.

This “hidden” lead didn’t really manifest itself until the end of the year when the Yankees started sweeping make-up double headers against non-contenders.

The team ahead in the loss column inevitably makes up the wins when they play rescheduled games against non-contenders. Yes, there is something to be said for more games in fewer days, meaning that 5th starters/call-up starters will be used, but the teams that are out of it usually are throwing even sketchier starters.

by olddomination on Aug 2, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

So here’s what I’m seeing in the Cubs and Cards schedules going forward.

Aug: 4 off days for the Cards, 2 for the Cubs
Sept: 4 off for the Cards, 2 for the Cubs and a make-up against the White Sox
Oct: 4 games in 4 days for each club.

In this case, it looks like the differential in games played is mostly due to the original schedule, not rain-outs. I’m confident that the ChiSox won’t be rolling over in that make-up game.

Can't believe

BBTN didn’t acknowledge Hoppy hoping around the infield. They usually love that stuff.

just got home from game and bars

all I can say is: Holy Fucking Shit *copyright
I love this team. I can’t even decide who my favorite player is this year
Carp-He’s good ::toots oboe Billy Madison style::
Wainwright-we are witnessing the emergence of an ace. Its GD beautiful.
Pineiro-love a good underdog story, and his might be the best in MLB this year. Can’t say enough about the job he’s done. He’s been a true hero for this team the year, if any player can be deemed a hero for on-field performance.
Yadi-I love that we are the only ones who realize just how fucking good he is (whats that ESPN magazine? Shut up…don’t act like you get it)
Derosa-I know it sounds cliche, but really seems to live up to his “clubhouse guy” rep. Oh, and the HRs don’t hurt either.
Boog-What a relief to be able to finally be able to point to a guy at SS and say, “He’s our guy for the next few years, no doubt.” What an even bigger relief to be able to point to any batter who’s hit a ball remotely in the vicinity of Boog and say, “Don’t even bother.”
Matt “The Stillwater Stalwart” Holliday-IIRC I heard that he was a really religious dude, so I hesitate to blaspheme, but once I heard he was from Stillwater I immediately thought of the fictional band, so I immediately thought of Almost Famous, so i immediately thought..awww hell, I’ll just say it: Matt Holliday you are a golden god!
Ludwick-Glovewick, Studwick, or Slamwick, I love em all
Am I forgetting anyone….? …just kidding, #5 will always be my favorite. Too many good memories, and I know there will be plenty more to come this season and beyond. Dude will not rest til he’s dominating the league again, and I for one don’t think it will be long.

If Pujols and Rasmus fell out of a boat

with the options of hitting water or hitting the one floating mine in the entirety of the sea, one of them would hit the mine, it would explode, reassemble and then explode again when the other one of them hit it.

Doesn't sound like Boggs is a sure thing...

to make the start the next time a 5th starter is needed:

The Cardinals do not need a fifth starter until Aug. 11, against Cincinnati, and that start probably will be made by Boggs or deposed fifth starter Todd Wellemeyer. Boggs will make his bid for the spot with another start in Memphis. Wellemeyer will make his from the bullpen.

Well that’s just fantastic.

Welley making his case from the bullpen

Should make the decision easy for LaDunc. Only chance Welley has is to throw perfect innings, not just shutouts. No walks, no f’ing around with nibbling, low pitch counts. Anything less means no start. Odds of that happening, slim to none.
