no, no, no , no, no, no,

don’t didn’t want to pinch Welley either by pitching to ausmus with the bases loaded

Basically:

1. Didn’t want to squeeze Welly by IBBing Kemp.
2. Was a great series, well played by both sides.
3. Franklin was absolutely not an option for Blake.

I guarantee it went something like this

Reporter: “Tony, why did you have Todd pitch to Matt Kemp, instead of Brad Ausmus?”

Tony: “grumble grumble….are we done here? bye”

Eh, can't get too mad about this loss.

Wellemeyer sucks, Reyes needs to practice throwing strikes.

by TheBirds on Jul 30, 2009 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

It was a pretty solid game, on balance,

and I think there’s multiple people you could rag on. The at bat Ankiel took with bases loaded was one of the worst he’s had all year. Wellemeyer isn’t pitching well (a fake DL trip seems like it would have made sense) but there are better reasons to not like Wellemeyer than tonight’s performance.

I have no problem with Wellemeyer tonight

he was used because no one else was available. Everyone in the stadium knew he wasn’t going to get Matt Kemp out. He just isn’t very good.

by dcfcblues on Jul 30, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, we were out of pitchers.

Unless we decided to bring in Ankiel, Welly was our last option.

i'm more upset that Tony pulled Colby than at Welley

dude just isn’t right & Az is correct he needs a DL visit.

Luddy had two pretty shitty late at bats too. he swung at everything.

we all knew dick was going to K. after the 7th inning he’s freaking useless.

Tony needs to start trusting Colby more. that’s a fact.

We need a clutch substitution for Ankiel for every time he starts

yank him during the 7th inning stretch, I don’t care if he’s 3-3 with 3 HRs.

by TheBirds on Jul 31, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

he's not really unclutch

he just can’t hit relief pitching, which happens in late innings. So it’s functionally the same.

by TheBirds on Jul 31, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

could it be

that in late innings it is normally against a LOOGY? But that is a good point.

by Evilfrog on Jul 31, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

The last pitch he swung at was about 3 inches away from his body and above his wrists.

LOOGy or not, that was a horrible at bat, as Rick futilely chased three pitches without getting close.

by azruavatar on Jul 31, 2009 6:24 AM EDT up reply actions

he hit a pretty clutch hr in the bottom of the 7th

and who else are you going to bring in to hit there?

LaRue? He’s hardly any better of an option, and then if he doesn’t come through, you burn your backup catcher.

Thurston? Maybe he’ll get a hit, and after that hit, maybe he’ll forget to touch the bases.

Until we get Glaus or Greene up here to bat from the right side, we had no better options than Rick at that time. Unless i’m forgetting someone.

Going to be tough to get past the Cubs

or get deep in October if the bullpen doesn’t get better.

Hopefully they will turn it around the next 2 months. Would be nice to for Mo to get someone on the cheap if possible.

The Dodgers are the only team above .500 we play! I really think we need to go .650+ over August, then we’re properly in pole position. It’s our big chance to pull away because we face a much tougher schedule in Sept and Oct.

Loney is about league average

just above if you believe in fielding metrics….

Martin is good. I would consider swapping Yadi for him. Ethier is good, and 27 is younger than all our position players except Colby (ermmm, I think Ryan possibly, he’s a similar age).

They have Kemp, Billingsley, Kershaw, all five win players, all young, all cheap. You can put a team of league-average nobodies with that trio and they’d still win 90 games.

Ankiel clutchness

For the season he is hitting a crappy

239 .292 .404 .696

With two outs and RISP he is hitting…

239 .292 .404 .696 And a BaBip of .440

Late and close he is hitting

.195 .244 .293 .537 And a BaBip of .250

Given that the number of ABs for both of these is < 50 I’m going to dispell the myth that Ankiel can’t hit in clutch situations and just say he hasn’t been hitting any time this year. Clutch or not.

First off, if anything, it would do more to support it than detract from it. Second, we could look at his clutch stats on fangraphs, which are all negative.

I'm saying he has just been bad

In the game thread today. What’s with people dissing the Diner? He’s one of the best relievers we have.

And I’m as tired of watching todd as anybody else, but there really just weren’t any other pitchers – we had a 15 inning game last night. Not sure what else tony was supposed to do. I also think it’s unfair to ignore the challenge of entering a tie game with runners on 2b and 3b.

And as for dfaing todd, our options at memphis are scherer, walters, and kinney. I’d be willing to try walters, but welly is just the new thurston – the alternatives are not great.

I think people are down on Reyes because

in his last 10 appearances, hitters are hitting .429 against him with a .967 OPS, and he’s only throwing 61% strikes.

Of course, all of that got worse after tonight’s performance.

OT

Can anyone remember a year, when there have been this many moves before the trade deadline?

by cdc81 on Jul 31, 2009 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

Brad Thompson...

Does anyone else think he needs to be used more as a traditional reliever? He was actually pretty solid his first couple of seasons pitching 1 inning. This season he’s only allowed 1 run in 7 appearances when he goes just 1 frame. Hawksworth should be the long man and Welley should head to the DL or be DFA’d when Boggs comes up.

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 31, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

I was once a big Thompson supporter, but he has lost too much off his one effective pitch.

And now he has one average pitch and two ineffective ones. At this point I would prefer that Boggs/Hawk/PJ get his innings.

According to fangraphs Thompson is maxing out 2-3 mph less than last year. When your only + pitch was a sinking FB, thats a big problem.

by DriverZn on Jul 31, 2009 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I've seen enough of PJ this season...

I absolutely prefer Boggs and Hawk…but they’ll both be on the team.

If I had a choice between PJ, Welley, and Thompson for the remainder of the season, I’ll take the PK.

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 31, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

16ip is enough to rate a pitcher now?

His fip at AAA is 3.23 with a k/9 of 8.15

He just needs to settle in and use his pitches rather than trying to throw sliders.

by DriverZn on Jul 31, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I"m not saying he doesn't have a future in the big leagues...

just not on a team trying to make a playoff run. He’s been consistently hammered in almost every appearance….not that Thompson and Wellemeyer are too much more worthy..

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 31, 2009 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll take the unknown that just struck out 14 over the known bad quantity.

The upside of PK and Wellemeyer is average. The downside is much, much worse. We know whats behind those doors and its not pretty.

by DriverZn on Jul 31, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

The downside of Walters can actually be a lot worse than either...

In a playoff run, I’d rather give the ball to a pitcher who has at least had a sniff of success at the big leagues rather that someone who has just been consistenly battered in his brief career.

In a perfect world I’ll take none of the above.

But given these choices, I’ll take PK….sadly

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 31, 2009 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Walters isn't throwing his best pitch

his best pitch is the changeup and for some unknown reason, all they call for is sliders.

by Tudor's Electric Fan on Jul 31, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

not likely

Because he is effective when he does throw his best stuff. You don’t K 14 with a dead arm.

The real problem is he doesn’t fit Duncan’s sinker/slider game plan. Since we know the game plan is not to be questioned, it must be the pitcher.

On that note after ditching Duncan’s ‘new arm slot’ Perez suddenly has his velocity back and is effective again.

by DriverZn on Jul 31, 2009 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

So unless

you are suggesting that Duncan will suddenly have a change of heart and let Walters pitch with his own game plan, then I don’t see how you can figure Walters will have much success at this level.

It’s going to be Dave’s way….he didn’t change for Perez or Reyes,…why the hell would he change for Walters?

I don’t think he has a place as a starter for us and I’m concerned that his mediocre FB isn’t going to be up to it in the majors. However, with that one awesome out-pitch, he could be a nice “trick reliever” in the pen, he’s successful (in AAA) against LHB and RHB, and he could dial up the FB from 89 to 92-93 (I guess) from the pen, which would help a lot. He could also use the change as his primary pitch, without it becoming over-exposed, if he only pitches one inning at a time, kinda like Rivera with the cutter, Lidge with his slider etc. (guys who throw their “out pitch” 30-40% of the time, which you can’t really do as a starter).

If we’re not going to use him as a proper starter, I think he has a real future as a potential late-inning reliever…

No.

He needs to be gone.

He isn’t good enough to be brought into close games and Tony refuses to use him for 3 innings in blowouts.

He has the greatest job in America.

ideally yes...

but since he’s here… I mean he hasn’t been completely horrible as a reliever this season. In 18 relief innings his ERA is 3.50, only 2 walks, and a WHIP of 1.17. As a starter he has pretty much been a Todd Wellemeyer clone.

I’m not saying he should be used as a setup man….I’m just saying less is more when it comes to PK.

Meh…hopefully they’ll just trade for a righty and we can rid the team of both Welley and PK..

Agreed.

Bring on Wuertz, Morrow, Springer, or whoever else is floating around out there. We may have enough to get us to October right now, but I think we might be a right handed reliever away from making much noise in postseason.

Morrow will be muey expensive....

are we talking about Welly?

He hasn’t had a chance to be used in Blow outs yet.

I do.

That sounds like a perfect scenerio.with what we have to work with. I would have much rather seen Todd called up to pitch in some 1 inning situations instead of thompson, but he is Mr. ptbnl, so if this Hawksworth thing works out, I don’t mind seeing Thompson pitch in that type of situation. I think he should be on a short leash though.

Hey, HL.

Thought you may find this amusing.

I like Joe Torre

He’s got a good sense of humor, and he’s friends with Stan the Man.

All I have to say to Joe Torre was better said by Mike Mussina

In a game in which the Yankees were winning 6-0 with 2 outs in the 9th, Mike Mussina allowed an unearned run to score. Joe Torre, with the shutout gone, quickly hopped up and went to remove Moose. Then this happened:

Moose struck out the last batter swinging.

I like Joe, though. He’s like Tony LaRussa without the stick shoved up his ass.

I was thinking about comparing him to TLR like that

but the stick up his ass is 90% of TLR. So what’s left after that.

We are getting into a heated pennant race... we just took 3 of 4 from the best team in the n.l.

I tune into 101 espn for some baseball talk and I get to hear about the first day of training camp for the rams. I understand that there are other sports, but I would just hope that during this time of the baseball season that the football talk would be minimal… I could give a crap about the signing status of 3rd round draft choices for a team I don’t even follow. (deep breath) I’m done venting
