Game 82 Open Thread:

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 3, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

Pineiro Bailey
6-9, 3.44 1-0, 8.68

Homer Bailey just retired in my St. Louis Browns Baseball Mogul league—in the year 2032. At least half of his 4200 strikeouts had to have been my guys, because he was a member of my most nefarious divisional rivals, the Athletics. Here's hoping today is not the day he shows off a fastball/curveball combo that keeps him pitching until he's 45.

If I may be so indulged, an 80 games haiku:

First half surprises
Ankiel, Dunc ten homers
And Rasmus twelve walks

it's was not bad umpiring

it’s in the rule book that umpires are supposed to screw up in the Cubs favor when games take place at wrigley.

Good ones

It has to be “glorious ancestors, make him stop.”

Tony has to raise the value of Rick and probably Chris, if he wants to enable Mo to “pass them on” for a producing player.

Rasmus 12 walks—- Colby eyes Howard’s sports cars. Walks don’t go fast.

Its practical

I think Tony may be trying to advance a position a bit with this line up. He does that. Homer is snake bit. If we don’t walk away with this game its time to hitch hike.

I know its only been the first half inning....

….but Dan and Al are broadcasting the Cardinals approach to the plate to wait and sit on fastballs….well Duncan did that and got lucky they throw a horrible curveball on a full count…albert watches 2 hangers go by b/c maybe he was coached to sit on that fastball…..maybe this could be PART of the reason we are slumping…..that seems to have been the exact OPPOSITE approach we should have taken in the first inning….just looking for a reason why all of our hitters not named Pujols cant hit anymore after such great numbers last year

by Dave0585 on Jul 3, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not worried about Albert

he’ll launch that pitch if Bailey throws it to him next at bat. Ankiel however….could see the exact same pitch 10 times in a row and I’d doubt his ability to hit it.

by mattyp on Jul 3, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Albert has not been the problem this season…its been the “supporting cast” which seems to have pulled a Palin on the team and just quit when times get hard

My opinion,

in this sub-thread, is that people are whining.

My opinion on Duncan – which I’ve written about all over this website – is that he is recovering from spinal surgery. Technically speaking, he is no longer injured. As someone w/ a neck injury, and someone who is married to man who had spinal surgery, I know that it takes TIME to recover completely. Range of motion and strength are usually diminished for at least a year post-surgery.

The dude has no power, is clearly freaking out about it, and is having a hard time right now. He has a good eye, usually has professional plate appearances (unlike Ankiel), and can draw walks in front of Albert, something hard to come by with this group.

He’s being played too much b/c Ludwick, Rasmus, and Ankiel have had uneven seasons (to say the least). He should be in Memphis until he’s hitting with authority. But he’s NOT. He’s HERE. And freaking out about it does NOTHING.

alright, honest assessment:

He brings a very useful platoon bat, at least when he’s healthy. It appears he is not, so more specifically at this very moment he brings an outfielder who is not Nick Stavinoha or Shane Robinson.

Given the Cardinals’ dearth of options in the outfield I think it’s too soon to give up on him as a productive player, even within this season. He should not be playing as much as he has, but since the Cardinals’ other three outfielders can play center (to varying degrees of effectiveness) he’s an interesting fourth outfielder for this team to have around.

I agree that charges of nepotism are unfair and worn-out

but I’ve only seen one person mention in this particular thread. Most of us complaining about Duncan and Ankiel and complaining based on what we are observing this year regarding their performance.

Regarding Duncan, he had 2 skills—getting on base and power. His power is gone, period. Maybe he’s still hurt? I don’t know. The point is, if he’s not mashing the ball his value plummets and fan frustration is inevitable and understandable.

The other players you mentioned for the most part made up for their offensive shortcomings in other ways—especially Matheny. Also, I don’t remember any of them earning starts over much more deserving young players, which adds to our collective frustration. This of course should be directed at Tony more than Duncan, but Duncan is obv caught in the cross-hairs.

but for my money, ankiel is far more frustrating to watch at the plate right now than Duncan

he should be walking in memphis

it’s totally & completely unfair that the Cards are expecting him to preform how he did in 06 so soon after major spine surgery

you don't think he was rushed back from said injury?

or that he shouldn’t have at least started at Memphis? this team almost always rushes players back. the general track record regarding the recognition, diagnosis, treatment and rehab of injuries is awful, utterly awful

I have

said repeatedly that I think Duncan should be in Memphis. I am just as critical as anyone about these decisions. I am not going to single Duncan out, though. Our entire team has been anemic offensively. At least Duncan has a physical reason.

And it is not his choice

It is up to Moz who also is limited by his options of someone actually having to replace him. I also don’t even know his options in regards to minors. He might have to pass through waivers possibly.

gotcha

i wasn’t trying to call ya out or anything. i can’t remember who says what :)

i’d rather have duncan w/ his ability to draw a walk than ankiel.

Re memphis: does Duncan have options left? that might explain why he’s never mentioned as a candidate for getting straightened out there

I think he has one option left.

on this it makes sense to complain

he should be in AAA getting his cuts in, not MLB. but it’s almost certainly got little to do with nepotism.

who do you suggest

we use as our 4th outfielder?

by Evilfrog on Jul 3, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the rub...

Who is the person supposed to replace Duncan? Shane Robinson?

That Duncan bashing thread suggested that league average OFers were obtained easily, but I don’t see many of them available for what the Cardinals have to offer – they got DeRosa for their best trading block.

it's a fair question for sure

offensively isn’t duncan better than ankiel right now? are either of them actually healthy? would you take Stavi?

the perfect solution is probably a pipe dream but …

1. Glaus at 3b
2. Derosa at 2b
3. Skip in LF

based on at-bats though is Duncan actually used as a 4th OF?

i’m just curious what the typical 4th OF gets for playing time on other teams

the kind that don't go on the DL

when two guys on the depth cart due?

by Evilfrog on Jul 3, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i guess we'd have to figure out how many at-bats he's getting since everyone was considered "healthy"

i don’t know the answer. I suspect he’s used more than the typical 4th OF

Tony uses all of his bench players more than most managers

But all of the other outfielders had more PA than Duncan last month.

by Evilfrog on Jul 3, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

on this team

Duncan should be the fourth outfielder. I think that Ras and Ludwick need to be in the lineup everyday, except for sheduled rest, and until there is another option Ankiel should be in there. If Dunc and Ank are both hitting jack squat then you look at what else they might be able to bring to the table. And if it’s not offense then it has to be defense. Ankiel has a good glove, a great arm, and wheels. Duncan doesnt even come close. And management acknowledges that Ankiels defense is fine by never considering taking him out for defensive replacements. AT this point Duncan isnt offering anything. Tony has said concerning the rotation that the best 5 would be starting. All I’m saying is that the standard should aply to the position players too. IF Duncan were providing some power noone would be searching for reasons why he’s out there. I guess back to your question, to me Duncan doesnt seem like a fourth outfielder, it seems like he’s used almost as a starter sharing time with 3 other guys who are of equal value.

The problem is

that Rasmus and Ankiel and Ludwick have all had injuries which have forced Chris into more playing time.

Definately

But he’s getting more than his fair share of time when Ras or Lud could be playing and it’s unexplainable. Why would we have Ank and Dunc in the order on the same night unless it’s absolutely needed? Unless Ras is having some more issues then he should be staring tonight.

It's possible

there is a legitimate reason for sitting Colby. We don’t know what it is. But it’s possible.

I can't remember what our rotation order is

can someone help me out with who will most likely be the scheduled starter next Saturday vs the Cubs at Wrigley? I’m going to be at the game, and i’m hoping it’s not Wellemeyer.

i can't believe the Cards have been in 1st place for 859 days since 2000

the FSNNatti just put up a graphic showing it’s the most number of days leading a division in the majors over that time

me?

no. considering how the last few season have gone, i would think that number would be less. i know they were ahead a lot earlier in the decade.
