Five players I'm watching in July
Picking up on HL's meme that the Cards need "Two Bats and an SP," I nominate the following players as the keys to a successful month and beyond.
The daily core is pretty well established; however TLR doesn't always play Rasmus them everyday: Yadi, Boog, Skip, Rasmus, & AP. I don't think there's any reason to monitor these guys. They're givens. DeRosa will also be in the lineup the majority of the time
First the "two bats" to watch: Ryan Ludwick &. . . wait for it: Troy Glaus. If Ludwick returns to 2008 form, we have found one bat. Even close to that performance will be acceptable. The most recent games have been encouraging and I'm hopeful. Glaus is ready to begin swinging in his rehab. His last four seasons he has averaged .368 wOBA. If his shoulder allows him to throw at least as well as Thurston, Glaus will be an upgrade and DeRosa can platoon at 2B with Skip and play LF platoon w/Ank/DunK. If neither Ludwick or Glaus can perform this month, I believe Mo will make a deal. The wildcard in this scenario is Brett Wallace. A strong month in Memphis may find the Walrus in StL despite the FO's wishes. And of course Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel may have a hot streak to help, but given what they've done so far, I'm not that optimistic.
The SP situation is a little clearer. As I wrote in the daily thread, Wellemeyer's last start is an encouraging first step. Two more just like it and we have found our SP. Welley's WHIP last year was 1.25; this year it's 1.66, and for his career, 1.47. His FIP the first 1 1/2 years in StL was 4.56. In 2009, it's 4.81. Can Welley return to his previous form? Someone worth watching.
I will also be watching Kyle Lohse to see if he can return to pre-injury form. His season WHIP (1.22) is better than last year's (1.30), but his FIP is higher (4.03 to 3.87). Carp, WW, and Pineiro have been solid so far, and while Jo-el may regress some, there's no reason to believe they all won't continue to be competitive. Again if Wellemeyer or Lohse prove inconsistent this month, I think Mo will look for a deal.
So there are my five to watch in July: two bats (Ludwick, Glaus, Wallace) and one SP (the Colonel and Lohse). Who will YOU be watching and why?

Colby is the key
he actually had a decent June, overall, even without taking walks- but most of that was early on, and they’ve figured him out. if he can take good PA’s and get 5-10 walks in July, and continue his very decent hitting when he DOES swing, he’ll make a huge difference. I’d also like to see him steal some bases. Turn him loose, tony.
Luddy and ankiel are the other two who are really underperforming right now. I expect Luddy to have a very decent July. Ankiel, who frigging knows.
Can Brendan Ryan keep up his incredible defense at short? And what is going on with Chris Carpenter?

did you guys see
that descalso got promoted to AAA?
with that development, my players to watch:
wallace, derosa, lohse, descalso, colby
if he can get playing time, raz is going to have such an amazing july. i predict he runs away with the roy in july
Of course, hope means being cut down on some street corner, as you run like mad, by a random bullet.

I hope Raz has a huge month and runs away with the ROY too.
And I hope Casey McGehee remembers that he is Casey McGehee and not someone who puts a .368/.429./.671 line over a month long period in the majors. McGahee and Prince carried the Brewers in June.

I really hope Tony starts playing Rasmus everyday. It’s getting ridiculous, and not in Albert sort of way.

I'm sorry
This may mark me as an idiot, but I don’t care. I read this blog everyday, yet somehow I missed the day when people started calling a certain player Boog. Who is this mystery Boog?

Upon reading this post,
I made the deduction that Rasmus is Boog. Anyone care to explain the etymology of that one to me?

Ankiel
Despite the fact that he has probably the worst approach to hitting I have seen in awhile, I still believe in him as a player. If he is able to return to his numbers last year (.360 wOB) and play a + left field, he would still be a very good player. Really, I just want him to play instead of Duncan, who truly looks like a AAA player.

how do you believe in him
when you yourself thinks he has a terrible approach to hitting? I hope and pray to the GOBs that he regains his stroke, but there is no way in hell I can believe in him as a hitter.

He has a lot of raw power and good athleticism
It’s possible to overcome a bad approach wtih a lot of raw talent. Just look at Ankiel last year.

approach to hitting...
plate appearance, situational hitting…call it what you will… the current crop of Cardinal bete noires are so frustrating I want to throw things when I watch:
Ankiel, especially, but also Duncan, Thurston. and lately T Greene.
I agree with the OK ones: Pu (very very ok); Colby and DeRo (very ok); Schu (the next best, but doesn’t hit lefties well); Luddy, Yadi and Boog…even LaRue (generally ok)
In short, MY ‘one to watch’ in the second half is… tada… LaRussa.
Will he demand (and then use) a decent “approach to hitting” third baseman and left fielder? 3b: DeRosa, Glaus, the Walrus, maybe even Yadi a few games? LF: DeRo, Schu (as a starter), X, Y, Z — someone other than Ankiel or Duncan.
Will Tony have the cajones (and the sense) to bench and/or send packing Ank, Dunc and Thursty, and maybe T Greene as well?
The pitching will, one way or another, be adequate… but we can’t win the Central (because of a probable surge by the Brewers or Cubs, who have been, so far, having problems of their own) with a line-up that has even two of the above four mentioned “can be pitched to” players.

Three players.....
It looks to me that Duncan and Rick are “done” this year. I hope I’m wrong, but they just don’t seem to be coming around at all, and have had the same holes in their games for a couple of years.
The three players are:
DeRosa: Need to get him healthy, and in the lineup as much as possible. We need him hitting like he did in Cleveland.
Glaus: If healthy, and assuming he can play 3B, this could be huge. I have MAJOR reservations about how much he’ll be able to contribute after being out all year, but we’ll see.
Luddy: He is the guy that needs to step up and be the other “big” gun alongside Albert and Colby.
Would love to trot out one of these two lineups:
Skip 2B
Raz CF
AP 1B
Luddy RF
Glaus 3B
DeRosa LF
Molina C
P
Ryan SS
or
Skip 2B
Raz CF
AP 1B
Luddy RF
DeRosa 3B
Ankiel/Duncan LF
Molina C
P
Ryan SS

Glaus...
… he changes everything. i don’t think he should come back until he’s completed his “extended spring training” or whatever they’re calling it AND played well for at least a week in the minors. but if he can come back in middle of August and be 75-80% of what he was last year, then this is a completely different team.
Glaus + DeRosa = two .800+ OPS additions to the line-up, plus makes the team much more capable of hitting LH pitching.
if Glaus comes back then send Duncan down, start Schu in LF on most days with Raz and Luddy, DeRosa at 2B, and the team looks really good all of a sudden:
1. Schu
2. Raz
3. Pu
4. Glaus
5. DeRo
6. Luddy
7. Yadi
8. Pitcher
9. Ryan
i’ll take that.

Raz
He’s GOT to start over Ank or Dunc against righties. He’s been hitting them great lately. Ank and Dunc have been nothing but, well, AnK and DunK.

Hoffpauir. Would love to see him rake both offensively and defensively and earn a starting spot at second. Then we could move Schu back to the OF and maybe get rid of Ank or Dunc. Or at least any more of that Thursty in LF nonsense. I know, just a pipe dream….

hoff is 26
and has hit his offensive ceiling already
and skip is becoming a pretty serviceable second baseman
not a chance hoff becomes our everyday starting 2b

Yeah, I'm actually pretty impressed with Schu at second.
Just wish there was something we could do about our “3rd outfielder(s)” (after Colby and Ludwick). Actually, I just saw that Descalso is up at Memphis now. Saw him a couple of times in Springfield and he looked solid. Look forward to seeing him in the Lou in the next couple of years.

me too
since getting called up to memphis, he’s one of the farm players i’m most excited about in the short term. will be interested to see if he can keep up the pace he’s managed since the start of AA last year and maybe crack the ’10 roster out of spring trainng
