Game 103 Overflow Thread III

Wainwright pitching deep again. . . I don't want to be around the day his elbow blows up.

Just 1 inning left and we've split the series.  Not something I would have guessed leaving Philly.  Does Franklin go for the 9th here?

I have an obsession with avatars matching screennames

Besides the fact that distinctive pictures make reading a thread much easier for many people, there’s an air of well coordinated planning that just soothes my anal retentiveness makes me chuckle.

The other method to get a good avatar is to have one that’s clear and distinctive and just stick with it for a reallllllly long time.

Of course, my main reason for liking Crystal Pepsi is that my parents never bought soda for me back then and the grocery store was giving Crystal Pepsi away as part of a promotion to try to get people to buy it, so for a couple months or so, I could grab a few free sodas to take home every time we went to the grocery store.

I’d be interested to try it now and find out if it’s ACTUALLY any good or not.

by mtalken on Jul 29, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Back when I was a kid in the 60s, my mom used to stock up on Tab

We usually drank the leaded stuff, if/when we ever got to drink sodas (a rarity), so on occasion I’d sneak a Tab….this was when Coke used cyclamates as a sweetener. It tasted great, and I still miss it to this day. Thought I heard a few years ago that they were bringing cyclamates back from the “It’s leads to cancer in rats” trash heap, but haven’t seen it anywhere yet.

There was Gibson in the Reds' dugout, visibly manhandling about three Reds and tossing them bodily out of the dugout and onto the field...He was the toughest athlete mentally I ever saw, and the greatest competitor. JACK BUCK

Sick

Man, as a Dodger fan these last two games made me sick. The Cardinals always kill us in The Mound City. It’s almost like the Cardinals are making the Dodgers look like a minor league team. Great pitching, great defense, timely hitting, no timely hitting on our part.
Kershaw pitching tomorrow will be our best chance of taking a game.

I don't know if you guys commented on this earlier or not

but Dan said that ‘with all due respect’ the Oakland A’s don’t have as much tradition and history as the St. Louis Cardinals.

With all due respect Dan, the A’s were TIED with the Cardinals for World Series wins until 2006, they have 12 HOF’ers that played more games with them than anyone else, they have Connie Mack, 11 MVP Awards, 5 Cy Youngs, and 15 pennants.

That just rubbed me the wrong way when he said that.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 29, 2009 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Not agreeing or disagreeing with Al

But not all of that is in Oakland. When I think of the Oakland Athletics, I don’t think of Connie Mack. I know the franchise kept all the old records with the move (and why wouldn’t they?), but for some reason that affects how I feel about them and their tradition.

Even still

since moving to Oakland, they’ve played 31 seasons (including 2009) and have made the playoffs 15 times and won the WS 4 times. That’s a GREAT percentage.

I’m trying to think of teams outside of the Yankees that have won the WS 4 times since 1968.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 29, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it’s a matter of me being so young. The A’s have been relatively mediocre since I’ve been following baseball (’90s and ’00s).

by jd is legend on Jul 29, 2009 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I see your point of view...

But I think Dan’s opinion was more or less based on the fact that no one in Oakland gives a shit about the A’s now. So it’s a mostly empty (football) stadium and a lifeless atmosphere, despite the tradition of winning. Because wasn’t he talking about St. Louis energizing Holliday? I think he just did a poor job of saying what he meant…

...smug?

From http://www.dodgerblues.com/content/news.html:

Meanwhile, the Dodgers had more hits than the Cardinals… and lost by ten runs. Nine of the Dodgers’ eleven baserunners were stranded (and the other two erased on double plays), and the heart of the Dodgers’ order went a combined 1-for-15. Chad Billingsley kept the Dodgers in the game for five innings before bending over in the sixth when he gave up four walks, three singles, and six runs. Wouldn’t be so bad if Cardinals fans weren’t so fucking smug.

I don’t get the smug thing. Dodgerblues used to be one of my favorite baseball sites. I expected a little more perception than that.

Strange

I’ve never heard Cardinal fans described as ‘smug’. The few I’ve met in my lifetime in person when they’ve been up here to see games at Fenway were A) polite, B) unwilling to be baited by Sox fans, and C) perhaps a bit cheesy. And this held both before (2003) and after (2008) the 2004 WS sweep.

by olddomination on Jul 29, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Fans

Generally speaking, we Card fans are no more special then any other fans. I have been to many Cardinal home games. We as a group are no smarter or less smug then the average fan. At one game a fan had to ask me what the numbers on the scoreboard meant (such as in a 6-4-3 double play). I was at the All Star game where Card fans ( more then a few) cursed at one usher all game long because the usher was doing his job by keeping the aisle free of people. Also one guy swore he had caught a batting practice home run from Pujols even though Albert was over in the outfield corner signing autographs for some troops. And don’t forget the booing of Lilly at pre-game introductions. Or the boos Izzy endured after pitching with half a hip left. Just because we throw terms like OPS around doesn’t mean we are more intelligent or better fans then the Red Sox or Blue Jays etc… The Cubs yes, but not the other fans.

It should be noted

That this deal doesn’t overlap AT ALL with the potential deal they had lined up for Halladay.

They could trade for both of them. They blow up the future, but man, their rotation would be terrifying.

for sure.

that gives them the only 1 2 3 in baseball that beats ours.

Have you been playing outfield for the Cardinals lately?

Heh heh

really, really wish we would trade for Zach Duke? i don’t know what the asking price would be but it can’t be high, it’s the pirates..

i dunno i'd imagine it'd include some b prospects too

but i still think it’d be well worth it. a young, cost controlled, inning eating LEFT HANDED starting pitcher? sign me up. too bad nobody’s said a damn thing about mo being even slightly interested.

Yeah, probably not

They already have a SS 3B (Greene), and they just got that left-handed right-handed 1B they coveted for so long (Glaus).

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

by mattybobo on Jul 29, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

why does everyone in the media

say it’s “Most encouraging for the Cardinals is their production without a contribution from Albert Pujols. The slugging first baseman is 1 for 7 with three walks in the series and 10 for 42 (.238) since the All-Star break with two homers and two RBIs — both in the first game back.”

that’s not encouraging… it’s never encouraging when our best hitter is toothless for long stretches.

i’m really glad our lineup is good enough to overcome that. but it’s not encouraging

by slash2049 on Jul 29, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Because if they hadn't made those trades

and Pujols went into this slump, then We probably would have been swept in Philly and dropped the first two against the Dodgers.

And then this place really would turn into Lord of the Flies, lol.

it's more a way they frame it

that it’s encouraging to us that Pujols is in a slump so these other guys can shine.

that’s not encouraging. it’s encouraging that they’re playing lights out for the most part regardless of pujols slump which is in no way encouraging

I would say a lot less
