That at bat was bS. He had multiple chance to go middle or Rf for the tie. He is just looking to pull something deep. Not good team play.

Ankiel’s numbers are better the last five games or so, but he is still way over-swinging and still reminding me of Tino (ugh) Martinez. Colby’s swing is more fluid, and HE will snap out of it soon; Ankiel will frump his way back to frustration.

“The Memphis franchise played at Tim McCarver Stadium through the 1999 season after which they moved into a brand new downtown ballpark, Autozone Park. Like many ballparks from the 1960’s, it was set on a fairgrounds away from the downtown. It was situated right next door to the Liberty Bowl. McCarver Stadium was one of those strange parks that features an artificial turf infield and a grass outfield. Having not seen a game here and because I was not able to get inside on my only visit, I cannot give this park a grade. From most accounts, it was not a great minor league park, and one that few people seem to be missing. In early 2005, the park was demolished.

to me, the main thing that could make this holliday trade a bad one

is if ankiel really does start tearing it up again. if he’s back to his “old” self, then left field was NOT our biggest whole…5th starting pitcher was, and that’s what we should have moved prospects for. i’m not condemning the trade, just pointing out how circumstances can affect it.

He has a good track record when healthy.

All of his struggles can be associated with injuries.

by etp_stl on Jul 25, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

true

but if i’m an opposing manager i’m not necessarily convinced by this 1 week that his troubles are behind him. any trade for him would most likely just be for 2 months so any more struggles this year are magnified. now if mo COULD flip him for a useful pitcher, then WOW. props to him and we are set. we wouldn’t have much of a bench but starting lineup and rotation would be RIDICULOUS. right now that 5th pitcher is our only significant hole

capital letters suck.

Oh dear

For all the money our HOF manager is being paid, you’d think he’d understand that Jason Motte cannot be used twice in a row vs. the same team. Motte is kind of like a sidearmer…Once he’s been seen he seems to lose a lot of what makes him effective. Opponents are pretty much ready to hit his serious cheese the more they see him.

This is why TLR needs to pick his spots with the guy. Throwing him in an 8-1 game isn’t one of those spots, b/c heaven forbid he has to throw the next game.

Just my humble opinion…

Oh, and Howard is a real butcher. That was a stunning display of ineptitude there.

by nota bene on Jul 25, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

True

…but SSS Warning hasn’t pitched that well in consecutive days yet this season. As much as TLR loves these SSS justifications, you’d think he would know this.

Anyway, Motte really has one pitch and there’s only so much strategy that can go into employing that pitch. He was much sharper last night too….but TLR has to share some of the blame for misusing a player.

Every sports

fan should read “Among the Thugs” by Bill Buford. I’ve only read a chapter of it (in a book of essays) but it is absolutely nuts.

i’m actually really impressed by that. very classy. clearly it’s a big deal, but they’re giving this the respect it deserves.

Oh the irony if the game was called over this.

You know, two weeks ago

When the Phils went up 3-0, you pretty much figured the Cards would struggle to tie. Today, I’m not worried. When Rollins hit the grand salami, two weeks ago this game was pretty much over.

Today, I’m calling it right now: Even though Luddy struck out, Cards come back and win this game.

gonna be tough to get it back around to Murderer's Row

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

And they should be allowed to shine a laser pointer in the eyes of two Phillies hitters of their choice.
