It doesn't matter

Ankiels been in a slump all GD season. There’s no reason to not have Rasmus’s defense in center. Colby’s had plenty of rest recently. This is TLR playing favorites and his own inaccurate assessments of players.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on Jul 24, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

At the end of the year

Rasmus will have the 3rd most PAs of all players. And depending on how many times Lugo starts against lefties he could have the 2nd most.

by Evilfrog on Jul 24, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Great.

And let me ask again, why are we not fielding the best team when we’re playing a team like the Phillies. The only argument that makes a shred of sense is Pineiro being on the mound as a groundball pitcher. Even so, why give the Phillies any advantage at all. Our margin for error against a team like this isn’t that high.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on Jul 24, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Right I get they're equally inept to date against lefties

(although the minor league track record is in Rasmus’ favor — Ankiel lacks a real minor league track record). Rasmus had a day off on the 20th. That argument doesn’t hold water.

yes.

it’s a safety hit-and-run.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

that's the point

of sending runners with 3-2, two outs: there’s no chance of a strikem out, throw em out.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

it is.

serious as a heart attack. it’s the exact same result as a hit and run, because if the ball’s in play, the baserunner advances the extra station.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

So any time runners are in motion...

and the batter swings, it’s a hit and run. Is that what you’re telling me?

V, b.

by LukeMP1186 on Jul 24, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

don't have to give a batter a "hit-and-run" sign

because he knows the count’s 3-2 and the runners will be moving. but if he takes a ball, the runner is protected.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The phrase:

“if he takes a ball” eliminates it as a hit and run. The purpose of a hit and run is to open a hole for the hitter, and you swing regardless. The purpose of starting the runner on 3-2 with 2 outs is to get a head start. No defenders are covering any bases, so no holes are opened up. It is in no way the same thing…

V, b.

by LukeMP1186 on Jul 24, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

but no.

starting a runner on a hit-and-run is asking the batter to protect the plate regardless of pitch location; he’s trying to give the runner a head start and an extra base and [yes!] also get the infielders out of position, but even if running 3-2 isn’t really called a hit-and-run, the extra station element is still in play, just with the added safety of walk protection. it’s like having insurance on the pitch. but he’s still got to swing at anything close.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

a hit-and-run

is taking a risk. Starting the runner on 3-2, 2 outs is not a risk.

That is a non-trivial difference. A hit-and-run is supposed to be a surprise. It would be surprising to not leave early with a full count and 2 out.

by nota bene on Jul 24, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no.

that would be bad baserunning. but that’s not the point. the goal is essentially the same, regardless of risk.

by hangingfromatree on Jul 24, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

AH,

but the means are different.

No it isn't bad baserunning

A hit and run means the runner goes regardless of the jump he gets. You’re wrong, basically everyone else here agrees that you are wrong. A 3-2 steal is not a hit and run.

by joker24 on Jul 24, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Jul 24, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay here we go. A runner without an open base behind him running before the pitcher has finished his motion in the situation where there are 2 outs and a 3-2 count on the batter is “starting the runner”, not a “hit and run”.

my mistake

I guess its a steal if you are on 2nd, not being forced, and the hitter gets walked but you still advance to third. That is beside the point your attempting to make. At least I think.

by 07saluki on Jul 24, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Everybody knows it. There is no strategy. Not a steal, hit run…anything. It’s just what you do.

by RiverRat on Jul 24, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

it makes sense

there is nothing to be lost by running on 3-2 2 outs if your already being forced to go. You obviously don’t want to get picked off but that’s why you don’t take off until the pitcher has committed to going home. There are only so many outcomes and none can hurt you by running.

by 07saluki on Jul 24, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

But the Count is Different, so they are Different Beasts

Hit and run could happen with ANY count. Starting the runner(s) ALWAYS happens on a 3-2 count.

by thepainguy on Jul 24, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

My goodness...

Hit and runs are 100% about opening up holes. That’s why 99% a guy swings and misses, the runner is thrown out. Does the runner get a slight jump if the ball is put in play? Yes. But that’s just an indirect effect. The ENTIRE purpose of starting the runners is to get a jump for the baserunners if the ball is in play. You are completely wrong.

V, b.

The Point of a Hit and Run

…is to start the runner to get one of the MIs moving and out of position. You then hit the ball into the vacated spot.

That ball just hit a hole, but not because 4 was moving to cover the bag.

The real reason

Tea is that he went solo 2 months ago. He is self motivated. He swings yard at every pitch. He stopped evolving. His swing is back to may 1st. Ankiel is a complete codependent. He has already responded. This is a fertile environment for him now. And Tony is looking after himself from now on. Gloves are off. Agreements broken.

by OperaCard on Jul 24, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously...quit the abstract bullshit

Say what you mean.

Rasmus has slugged .480 since May 1st and is 22 years old AND plays a hell of a CF.

Rick Ankiel is a crappy hitter and a home run last night doesn’t change that.

I understand why everyone is mad what with money, prospects(WALLACE), and all the years and odds of losing Holliday. One thing I don’t remember seeing is anyone mentioning much about potential injuries. Tarp comin' off the field...

(sigh) Cardinals Crew on the rain delay… looks like we’ll be back to baseball as soon as the field’s ready, and the pitchers warm up again.

by guayzimi on Jul 24, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Im sure someone has mentioned this...

but one thing I like about the movements the past couple of days is that we are looking at a potential bench of Ankiel, Glaus, K. Greene, Lugo and Larue…just a week ago we had Stavinoha, Barden, Duncan and Larue. I’ll take that!

by tbell61 on Jul 24, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

IF K. Greene returns,

great; but I’m not really expecting him to make a comeback this season with the Birds. Mental problems are harder to “fix” than physical problems. Get him well, then see if he can still play…

you're right of course

but even without him, our bench looks much better…I’m really starting to feel like this is the kind of team that can run with the Phillies and the Dodgers…I guess we’ll find out in the next week!

would’ve been a nice barometer to see if he can rock this “new” approach vs. a stacked lineup. Sucks that we had the 48 minute rain delay AND that he fouled that ball off himself. He might not go very long regardless of his effectiveness.
